An NHS worker, identified as Innocent Ayodele, was reportedly caught driving the wrong way down a slip road on the M61 in an apparent attempt to avoid heavy traffic.
The incident is understood to have taken place during a period of congestion on the motorway, when frustrated motorists were facing delays. Instead of remaining in the traffic, Ayodele allegedly made the dangerous decision to travel against the normal direction of traffic on a slip road.
Driving the wrong way on a motorway slip road can create a serious risk of a head-on collision, particularly because other motorists may not expect a vehicle to be approaching from the opposite direction.
The incident has prompted concerns about road safety and the potentially devastating consequences of attempting to bypass traffic congestion through dangerous manoeuvres.
Motorway authorities and police regularly warn drivers not to use slip roads, hard shoulders or other restricted areas to escape traffic. Drivers caught making dangerous manoeuvres can face prosecution and potentially serious penalties.
There has been no suggestion that Ayodele's occupation as an NHS worker played any role in the incident, but the case has attracted attention because of the nature of the alleged driving.
Motorists stuck in congestion are urged to remain patient, follow traffic instructions and never put themselves or other road users at risk in an attempt to save time.
The incident serves as another reminder that a traffic jam may be frustrating, but no journey is worth risking a life.
