Edo Police : UBTH doctor found dead in hotel

A medical doctor simply identified as Dr. Ogbeide, has been confirmed dead in a mysterious circumstances, by the Edo State Police Command.
Dr. Ogbeide was of the Radiology Department of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
Some members of staff of the hospital who did not want to be named, said the doctor was kidnapped and murdered.
They also said the incident was cult-related. The UBTH management, however, said they were not aware if any doctor was kidnapped or not.
It was gathered that the victim returned to Benin from a trip on Saturday and was seen standing by the roadside in front of the hospital in Ugbowo, where he was said to have been whisked away in a car by unknown men.
The Edo State Police Commissioner, Mr. Hakeem Odumosu, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on phone.
“It is not a case of murder or kidnap. The doctor checked into an hotel on Saturday. He was not seen going out on Sunday, nor did anyone visit him, so, the door was forced open on Sunday.
“He was found lying face-down on the bed. The bed sheet was not even ruffled. There was also a bottle of soft drink in the room.
“There was no sign of struggle or anything on him. We are looking into a case of suicide or suffocation.
“We are waiting for the autopsy report from the hospital. and as a doctor, they are going to do a scan on the body,” Odumosu said.
Earlier when contacted for clarification, the Public Relations Officer, PRO, of the UBTH, Joshua Uwaila, said he was not aware whether the doctor was kidnapped or not.
“I don’t have that information, that a doctor was kidnapped,” he said.
It would be recalled that the UBTH has lost several doctors in recent past.

'FAKE WOMAN' !! Ezekwesili: I mistakenly assumed ACPN shared my values and vision

Ezekwesili: I mistakenly assumed ACPN shared my values and vision
Obiageli Ezekwesili, presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), says the divergence in values and vision with the party triggered her withdrawal from the presidential race.
Ezekwesili announced her withdrawal from the race on Tuesday.
She said the actions of the ACPN, following her withdrawal, has made Nigerians aware of the reasons she ended her membership of the party.
Abdul-Ganiyu Galladima, national chairman of the party, had accused Ezekwesili of not showing commitment to the party. He alleged that the former minister was in the race to secure the position of finance minister.
Subsequently, the party had endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari for reelection.
Speaking extensively on the matter, Ezekwesili said in a statement: “I was delighted to read reactions of real patriots to my announcement that I’ve decided to withdraw from the 2019 Presidential race& end my membership of Allied Congress Party of Nigeria- ACPN. I have also seen the reaction of ACPN leadership to my decision, “the statement read.
“Fortunately, they have divinely helped me by making the Nigerian public now fully understand why I had to swiftly depart from their midst.
“How could I upon realizing the divergence of values and vision with the leadership of the Party continue to stand on such a political platform? My abiding vision has been to mobilize citizens to disrupt the old order politics of APCPDP.
“Nigeria and Nigerians deserve a New Order of ethical, competent and capable leadership which I had mistakenly assumed the ACPN was aligned with me to offer, until it proved otherwise.
“The values and vision divergence with the Party was a key factor that triggered my withdrawal from the Presidential race on their ticket prompting me to dissociate immediately in order to help build a coalition for Good Governance. It is why I was instant in sacrificing my candidacy to uphold my values by withdrawing.
“The Party’s decision to immediately today endorse the candidate of APC which was announced by my erstwhile VP candidate who is also the Chairman of ACPN was their classic political entrepreneurship in full display for Nigerians to see. It is instructive.
“The Party leadership’s transactional approach to Politics began to manifest in their attitude following after the Convention that adopted me as their Presidential Candidate. I would have none of such and therefore extremely delighted to part ways after a tumultuous three months of hoping that the ACPN leadership would elevate to the new values of disruptive politics that one had desired for and preached within the Party.”
Ezekwesili denied the allegations against her by the leadership of the ACPN, describing them as “fabrications and outright lies”.
“As for the defamatory statements made against my person by the ACPN leadership in their malicious statement, I want Nigerians to know that there is NO IOTA of truth in any of them,” she said.
“Everything ACPN wrote or said of the campaign donations is fabrication&outright lies. Our Campaign was conducted with the highest level of transparency and accountability with impeccable evidence. I know and can guarantee that at all times because, these standards firmly underpin my commitment to lasting values and professionalism.
“Only those who desperately wish to believe falsehoods would lend any credence to such puerile accusations by the leadership of ACPN. Only those who pretend ignorance of my legendary and uncompromising passion for accountability would give heed to such baseless statement.
“I have declined any interviews until my return to Nigeria upon which I shall hold a World Press Conference to engage Nigerians on the actions I shall take even as we present full report of our 3-month old Campaign for the 2019 presidential election to the public.
“Finally, take it from me that WE shall definitely build the Coalition force that will terminate the poverty escalating governance of the two dominant parties in the 2019 election.”

ASUU strike: Lecturers make fresh demands from FG

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said the Federal Government failed to make fresh offer on funding, for the revitalisation of public universities in the country.
Also, the union stated that government is yet to address the issue of renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, in its new offer made to the union on Monday.
This was disclosed by ASUU president, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, in a bulletin he sent to branches of the union.
“At the meeting held on January 21, 2019 between the union and government agents (the Minister of Labour and Employment and Representatives of relevant government agencies), government improved its earlier offer.
“However, government has failed to address the crucial issues of funding for the revitalisation of public universities in Nigeria and renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement.
“To confuse the public about our struggle, agents of government and some haters of our principled and purposeful struggle are peddling all sorts of misinformation through various media. Members must disregard any media information unverified or not authenticated by the union,” Ogunyemi stated.

New minimum wage: Nigerian employers reject N27,000

Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association, NECA, has faulted the National Council of State’s decision to approve two minimum wage.
The National Council of State presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari had on Tuesday approved N30,000 for federal workers and N27,000 for states and the private sector.
NECA said it was alien to have two minimum wage.
It urged the organised labour to lobby the National Assembly for a minimum wage of N30,000 across board.
Speaking on the issue, Director-General of NECA, Mr. Timothy Olawale, told journalist yesterday that, “As the title goes, what the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage submitted to the President upon conclusion of its assignment was a recommendation.
‘’Ordinarily, a recommendation is not cast in stone, but advisory to the President. The International Labour Organisation, ILO, Minimum Wage Setting Mechanism as domesticated in Nigeria, permits the National Economic Council and, of course, the National Council of State to take a further look at the recommendations and make their inputs to the President.
“While it is desirable that they accept and adopt the recommendations of the committee, it is also within their rights to make their own independent recommendations.
“The process never envisaged a situation of rubber stamping the recommendations of the Tripartite Committee.
‘’The National Minimum Wage process also gives the National Assembly the liberty to tinker with the figure in the interest of the nation and the citizens. Such tinkering could be an upward review of the recommendations, which would be desirable to the workers.”

FROM FRY PAN TO FIRE !! Insecurity: 32,000 Cameroonians take refuge in Nigeria – UN

The UN has said that no fewer than 32,000 Cameroonians fleeing insecurity and violence are currently taking refuge in Nigeria.
UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Cameroon, Ms Allegra Baiocchi, while presenting the 2019 Humanitarian Response Plan for the country, described the situation in the country as “forgotten crisis”.
Baiocchi and Cameroon’s Civil Protection Director, Ms Yap Mariatou, warned at the launch in Geneva that there was a drastic increase in humanitarian need across the country.
The UN chief for Cameroon regretted that with attacks on the rise, around 4.3 million Cameroonians, mostly women and children, were in need of lifesaving assistance.
She said: “Insecurity and violence in these regions have uprooted 437,000 people from their homes and forced over 32,000 to seek refuge in neighbouring Nigeria. Four million people are affected by the conflict in Cameroon’s west.
“In addition, due to the deteriorating situation in northeast Nigeria, more than 10,000 new refugees arrived in Cameroon in 2018, bringing the number of Nigerian refugees to 100,000,” she said.
“Humanitarian needs are likely to increase in coming years,” Baiocchi said, lamenting over underfunding in the 2018 Humanitarian Response Plan for the country.
“Underfunding means we cannot do all we can to make a difference in the life of most vulnerable people across Cameroon, whether it is the girl who is missing school due to violence, the displaced mother struggling to feed her children, or the father who has lost his entire family.
“Hundreds of thousands of people on Cameroon’s territory need urgent assistance and protection,” Baiocchi said.
She added that “attacks against civilians have increased and many conflict-affected people are surviving in harsh conditions without humanitarian assistance due to the dramatic underfunding of the response.
“Cameroon today can no longer be a forgotten crisis; it needs to be high on our agenda”.
With needs rising by 31 per cent in a year, the UN estimated that around 4.3 million people in Cameroon – one in six people and mostly women and children – require lifesaving assistance.
The joint Humanitarian Response Plan 2019 seeks $299 million to assist 2.3 million vulnerable people, more than half of those in need.
In 2018, a $320 million response plan for Cameroon was only 40 per cent funded.
The aggravation of the conflict in western regions is the main driver behind the increase, with armed attacks in the far north, and new refugees coming from the Central African Republic also increasing demand for urgent aid.
The representative of the Cameroonian Government at the launch, Mariatou, said: “The Government of Cameroon is responsible for the protection and wellbeing of its people and has been at the forefront of the response with its national and international partners.

“We acknowledge the scale of the different crises we face, and we encourage all the actors to work in close partnership to address the needs of Cameroonians and of the people we host”.

Monaco sack Thierry Henry over poor performance

Monaco have sacked manager Thierry Henry after 20 games in charge.
The Ligue 1 strugglers announced on Thursday he had been suspended, but BBC Sport understands that is merely procedural and that the France World Cup winner has already left the club.
Predecessor Leonardo Jardim is expected to replace Henry, just over three months after being fired himself.
The 2017 French champions are in the relegation zone after only five wins under Henry in all competitions.
Franck Passi, appointed as Henry’s assistant on 20 December, will take training on Friday, the club said.
Passi has previously had spells as caretaker manager of Marseille and Lille.
Henry – who was hired in October – had apologised for using foul language to insult Strasbourg defender Kenny Lala during his side’s 5-1 defeat on Saturday.
Arsenal’s all-time leading scorer is in his first managerial role, having previously been Belgium assistant boss.
He had been on the shortlist for the Aston Villa manager’s job in October before taking the job at the club where he started his playing career.

NAFDAC warns of cancerous effects of bleaching creams

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says many skin whitening products in the market can cause skin cancer and kidney failure.
The Agency’s Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, gave the warning on Thursday in Abuja.
“In Nigeria we have a lot of use of dangerous chemicals.
“One is Glutathione used as an injection. People inject it under their skins, with a promise that they will be lighter in a week or two.
“From Glutathione injection to other chemicals, the reason why we are so concerned about Glutathione is because it can cause skin cancer.
“It can cause kidney dysfunction and failure and this is what young people don’t know.
“First, philosophically I don’t know why somebody wants to bleach their skin, you should be proud of your colour because, when you cross that threshold of desiring to be lighter, problems are associated with it.”
Adeyeye said the agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate would continue its surveillance to raid stores of illegal and unregistered whitening chemicals.
On drug abuse, the director general cautioned against the use of illicit drugs and overdose of licit ones.
“On drug abuse, you can use a drug rightly but you can use the same drug illicitly; take Codeine for example, Codeine is an anti-toxic, it is an expectorant and that is the medical use.
“But, if you then use more than what you should of Codeine, it becomes illicit.
“So, NAFDAC has to do its job by looking at it from the illicit point of view now being abused.
“Take for example, Tramadol; the medical use of Tramadol is at the strength of 50 and 100 milligrams, but those that come into the country are 500 milligrams that can fry anybody’s brain.
“When they are being shipped in, most times they come with other licit drugs that are not registered.
“So, we have to impound.”
She urged all stakeholders to collaborate with the agency to tighten the country’s borders to end the smuggling and use of illegal drug.

Two INEC officials convicted over Diezani’s N264.8m gratification

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, Southwest on Thursday convicted two ex-officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Christian Nwosu and Tijani Bashir who were charged with N264.8 million gratification received from former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Allison-Madueke and money laundering by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The Presiding Judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, who has been elevated to the Court of Appeal concluded the case on fiat and handed down the conviction while delivering his judgment in the trial that spanned several months.
Justice Idris, however, adjourned the sentence of the convicts till 12noon tomorrow.
He ordered EFCC to ensure their present Friday (tomorrow), to enable the first convict (Nwosu), who was reported to be on sick leave appear in court.
EFCC had preferred a criminal charge against the convicts. One of them, Yisa Adedoyin, earlier was convicted by the court after he pleaded guilty to the charges.
The convicts were said to have accepted cash gratification from a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Allison-Madueke, in the build-up to 2015 general elections.
The anti-graft agency accused them of accepting the said gratification, which they reasonably ought to have known formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful act.
The convicts were re-arraigned after their co-accused (Adedoyin) had opted to change his plea by admitting to being complicit in the offences charged.
Thereafter, Nwosu and Bashir maintained their respective pleas of not guilty, while they opened their defences on September 19 and 21, 2018 respectively.
After conclusion of trial, parties adopted their final addresses on Nov. 8, 2018 and the court adjourned until January 23 for judgment.
On January 23 (yesterday), the court was ready to read its judgment, but counsel to the first convict, Mr Victor Opara informed the court of a sick leave certificate for Nwosu, from a hospital in Enugu in which he was placed on bed rest.
He, thereafter, urged the court to grant an adjournment to a further date to enable Nwosu appear.
Opposing the application, EFCC counsel, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo, vehemently urged the court to proceed with its “business” for the day, adding that such excuse was aimed at “arresting” the court’s judgment.
In the interest of Justice, however, Justice Idris further adjourned the case till today for judgment and ordered that Nwosu be brought to court unfailingly today.
When the case was mentioned today, Mr Obinna Okereke announced his appearance for Nwosu, and informed the court that the convict was immediately informed to come down from Enugu after the court issued the order yesterday.
He, however, said that after Nwosu arrived Lagos, he was informed that he fainted at the park and had been rushed to a hospital at Ajangbadi in Lagos, where his blood pressure was said to have read 200/140
He also urged the court to grant a short adjournment to enable his appearance in court, adding that there was also a subsisting appeal in the instant case before the Court of Appeal.
Again, Oyedepo objected to the prayer for adjournment and citing the provisions of sections 305  and 314 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, he urged the court to proceed to deliver his judgment.
The prosecutor, described the request as a gimmick to stop the judgment.
He added: “A defendant who was able to travel from Enugu to Lagos, suddenly fainted when he arrived his destination; he did not faint on the way, I urge the court to refuse this excuse and proceed with the judgement.”
In a bench ruling, Justice Idris dismissed the request for adjournment on the grounds that by the provisions of the law, his judgment ought to be delivered within 90 days after adoption of addresses.
Delivering his judgment afterwards, which lasted for about 47 minutes, Justice Idris gave a clear insight as to what constituted Money laundering, conspiracy, as well as circumstantial evidence.
The court held that it was satisfied from the testimonies of prosecution’s witnesses which included an operative attached to the Special Task force of the Economic and financial crime commission, EFCC, Mr Usman Zakari who in his evidences tendered such as receipts of payments duly signed by the convicts, that the prosecution had been able to discharge the burden of proof on it, which in any case needs not be total.
Again, the court held that it was not in doubt that the convicts were guilty of the offences of conspiracy, as they both met in the bank to accept the cash payments of N70.05 million and N30 million out of the total sum of N264.8 million dole-out by the ex petroleum minister.
The court held: “I agree with the prosecution that the manner in which the transaction leading to this charge was consummated, shows clearly a meeting of the minds.
“As stated earlier, the defendants showing their meeting of minds to commit the alleged offences, went to the bank, handed the cash to the second defendant, who conveyed same as instructed by the first defendant.
“They were not beneficiaries of any financial instruments or bank instrument, with which they can go to the bank to carry out such transaction; they made such cash payments without going through any financial institution and concealed, retained and used same.
“Any person who contravene any provisions of the money laundering Act, is liable upon conviction, to an imprisonment term of not less than seven
years imprisonment and not more than 14 years imprisonment.
“To prove its case, the prosecution need not call all the witnesses, but only such witnesses necessary to prove its case.
“In the light of the forgoing, I hereby find the accused guilty as charge.”
Following the absence of the first accused, the court deferred his sentencing to tomorrow, and ordered that the second accused who was present in court, be remanded in the EFCC custody pending sentence.
