FCCPC: Electricity topped consumers’ complaints in 2020

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) says it received the highest consumer related complaints from the electricity sector in 2020.

Speaking in Abuja on Sunday, Babatunde Irukera, chief executive officer of FCCPC, said the banking and telecommunication sectors ranked second and third respectively on the complaints chart.

He added that the aviation sector was ranked fourth.

“Our complaints resolution team is still a very small team of people and they are dealing with thousands of complaints,” Irukera said.

“We are looking at expanding capacity to have more hands handling the complaints but the real game changer in handling complaints better and faster is for companies to start doing it.

“The person who has the least open complaint in our resolution team has about 800 complaints across sectors and that is one person. If you multiply it by 12 to 15 persons, you will imagine the number of complaints.

“Being able to expand to a point where we are able to operate more efficiently, we will keep training, leveraging technology, the more we leverage technology, the more efficiently we can do our work.''

The commission was established by the 2018 Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) to promote fair, efficient and competitive markets in the Nigerian economy, facilitate access by all citizens to safe products, and protect the rights of all consumers in Nigeria.

EPL: Wenger names three players that are future of Arsenal

Legendary Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has named the three players at the club that fill him with hope for the future.

They are Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe and Gabriel Martinelli.

Wenger spent over two decades in charge of the club and oversaw the developments of many young players during that time.

But after leaving in 2018, Arsenal’s academy has continued to produce stars and Wenger has high hopes for the current crop.

Saka and Smith Rowe have become key players under Mikel Arteta this season.

And Gabriel Martinelli, though not strictly an academy graduate, has impressed when he has had a chance.

“They [Smith Rowe and Saka] already were there when I was there a few years ago.

“We always had a good youth system, with good young players. It’s good to see that they come out.

“We just spoke about injuries and touch wood that these players [don’t get long-term injuries]. It’s a sensitive part between [the ages of] 20-22 once they get game after game to see if their body can adapt and cope with it.

“Lets hope. They look to me to have top quality and as well a good mentality so I am quite optimistic for them,” Wenger said.

Imo violence: Okorocha will be prosecuted if found culpable, say police

The police command in Imo says Rochas Okorocha, former governor of the state, will be prosecuted if found culpable of any offence.

Okorocha was arrested on Sunday for unsealing a property seized by the state government on Friday.

Thereafter, the senator representing Imo west was escorted off the property by a detachment of police officers.

Royal Palm Hotel, the property reportedly owned by the senator’s wife, is said to be under investigation by the Imo government, hence the sealing.

Speaking on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme on Monday, Orlando Ikeokwu, Imo police spokesman, said the lawmaker was invited for questioning and was later released on Sunday night.

“He was released later at night. If anybody is found culpable, definitely, he will be charged to court,” the spokesman said.

“If investigation proves that he [Okorocha] has committed an offence, he will be charged to court.”

In a recorded interview with Channels Television on Monday, Okorocha alleged that police officers watched as thugs attacked his associates with machetes.

“I came back from an occasion and proceeded to Royal Palm Hotel to enquire what actually happened. On getting there, I saw a lot of thugs,” the former governor had said.

“They started molesting, cutting my boys, shooting. But the police were there too, and they did nothing and said nothing.

“They were macheting… my orderlies rushed me to a room and locked me up. Those boys had teargas, police also were throwing teargas. As they were advancing, the police were backing them up; and they were coming and were shooting.”

Farmer cries for help as herdsmen attack son in Bayelsa

A 58-year-old farmer from Otuoke Community, in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, Mr. Goodhead Nation, has revealed how he and his 18-year-old son escaped death from a deadly attack by an unidentified Fulani herder.

The attack, which reportedly happened on Friday evening, and currently generating tension in Yenagoa, the state capital, almost left the 18-year-old boy simply identified as Samuel dead.

DAILY POST gathered that the victim, Samuel Nation, who was attacked with a machete, inflicting grievous injuries on his fingers and head over an allegation of a missing cow, underwent four hours of surgery at the emergency ward of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC).

The father, Goodhead Nation, reportedly escaped the attack with heavy bruises in the left hand.

According to him, “I and my son were in the farm working when one of these cow herders approached me and asked where one of his cows was. I was surprised and I answered that I don’t know what he was talking about, and decided to continue what I was doing; the next thing I heard was a hit with a stick on my back, I turned and defended with my hand and he hit me again but when he noticed my little son was running to go raise alarm, he left me and chased after him.

“I couldn’t move faster so I trailed him slowly, on reaching a distance I saw my son on the floor in the pool of his blood, I quickly moved around and saw some other persons working in the farm, so I cried out for help, that was how we managed to move him to the river side where we used a local canoe to bring him back to Otuoke town for emergency treatment.”

Mr. Nation, who was full of tears while narrating his ordeal when DAILY POST visited them at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, said “we got to the hospital at midnight of Saturday but we were just attended to this Sunday afternoon, I don’t have a dine on me, I don’t want my son to die.”

Reacting to the development, the spokesman of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC), Comrade Ebilade Ekerefe, who visited the victim at the hospital, expressed sadness over the incident.

“This shows the intent was to kill the boy, because it is not the first time we got information on cases of herdsmen terrorising our communities; as Ijaw people considering the mood of the country at the moment, we don’t want reprisal to happen. We want to believe it’s an isolated case, and we also want to believe it’s not intended to cause a crisis in the state. We will continue to consult with our leaders and other security agents.

“Let me say, this is not the first time this kind of incident happened. But this one is too many. Considering the mood of the country, the Ijaw Youths should not carry out reprisal attacks. It is an isolated attack. We do not want to believe that the attack was planned.

“We want to call on security agencies to arrest the culprit. If the culprit is not arrested, it will show that it was planned. The Hausa/Fulani Community in Bayelsa should show sympathy with the victim by ensuring the culprit is arrested. We don’t want to pre-empt anyone. They should come out to exonerate themselves.

“Ijaw youths should brace up and defend their clans against any form of enemy attacks. The Ijaw Youths should welcome peace loving people and defend themselves against any form of threats”.

In his brief remark, the Chairman Ijaw Youth Council, Central Zone, Comrade Clever Inodu, expressed grief on what he described as “undue invasion on innocent citizens”, noting that the council feels the pain of the victims and will do something about the incident.

He appealed to the people of the state to remain peaceful and not take laws into their hands, assuring that the leadership of the state was already on top of the situation.

“Ijaw people are very hospitable, we will not appreciate if the love we show to others is thwarted by incidents like this, we are already setting modalities and plans to ensure such menace do not happen again,” he said.
