Gani Adams to SW govs: Terrorists now in Oyo… Like Ortom, ask your people to get gun licence

Gani Adams to SW govs: Terrorists now in Oyo… Like Ortom, ask your people to get gun licence

The Aare Onakakanfo Council led by Gani Adams has asked south-west governors to emulate Samuel Ortom, governor of Benue state, by urging residents of their states to get gun licences.

In a communique signed by its members at the end of an extraordinary meeting on the state of Yorubaland on Sunday, the council claimed it had “credible intelligence” on the infiltration of terrorists into the region, particularly in Niger state and Oke-Ogun axis of Oyo state.

The council further asked the federal government to intensify its effort in securing the country’s land borders to prevent the entry of criminals from neighbouring countries.

Ortom recently asked the federal government to allow responsible Nigerian citizens to carry sophisticated weapons like the AK-47 so they can defend themselves when attacked by bandits.

The communique read: “The Ààrẹ Ona Kakanfo-in-Council has in its possession credible intelligence, gathered from within and outside the country, which strongly indicates the infiltration of terrorists and killer Fulani herdsmen in the region.

“More worrisome, the intelligence report also reveals that suspected ISIS operatives have already positioned themselves in Niger state via Ìbàrùbáland and are now within the Òkè-ògùn corridor of Oyo state.

“Indeed, the intel also reveal that about 500 power bikes and assorted armour belonging to the terrorists have been physically sighted along the abandoned Lusada route moving towards Sokoto, from Igbó-ọrà in Ọ̀yọ́ state. The council, therefore, enjoin all southwest governors, as well as the governors of Kwara and Kogi states, to emulate the governor of Benue state, Samuel Ortom, by directing their citizens to apply for a gun licence for self-defence against the marauding terrorists and killer herdsmen.

“The council calls for an immediate halt to all ethnic and genocidal killings in Nigeria. No nation prospers on the blood of the innocent. President Muhammadu Buhari, rise to the occasion and put a stop to the senseless killings in Southern Kaduna, Benue, Plateau and Taraba states, among others. Stop this senseless bloodletting now.

“The clamour, by the Yorùbá, for an effective and adequate security architecture for the region goes beyond Àmọ̀tẹ́kùn or any form of self-help. It is all about the preservation of our heritage as a race, our way of life, our patrimony, our culture and traditions that are so precious to us and which we guard so jealously.”

Speaking on loans from China, the council berated the federal government and described the move as an “ungodly lure into neo-colonialism”.

Nigeria is indebted to China to the tune of $3.121 billion as of March 31, 2020, accounting for 11.28 percent of the total external debt stock of $27.67 billion.

The council asked the federal government to look inwards for income generation.

“Our submission to the federal government: Don’t take the Chinese loan. Don’t mortgage our future and that of generations unborn. Let us take our destiny into our hands, look inwards, and salvage our country together,” it said.

“Council reiterates that the unity of all Yorùbá people, both within and in the diaspora, is non-negotiable. Now, more than ever before, we must bury personal ambitions, close our ranks and submit totally to Yoruba unity.”

Messi arrives in UK, begins negotiations with Man City

Jorge Messi, the father of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, has arrived in the UK and is already negotiating with Manchester City, RAC 1 reports.

The player has made it known to the LaLiga club via fax, that he wants to leave this summer.

Several top European teams have been placed on high-alert, including City and Paris Saint-Germain.

However, Messi prefers a reunion with Pep Guardiola, who he worked with for four years at the Camp Nou.

It is believed his father is discussing a two-year deal with City, although there are still question marks over if the Premier League side will have to pay a transfer fee.

Messi believes he can activate a clause in his contract, which makes him a free agent at the end of a Barcelona season.

However, Barca insisted that the clause expired in June, which would mean either Messi or City would have to pay the player’s £630million release clause at the club.

South-west govts kick against IGP determining Amotekun’s structure

South-west govts kick against IGP determining Amotekun’s structure

The state governments in the south-west say Mohammed Adamu, inspector-general of police, should not be allowed to determine the structure of Amotekun.

The Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN), a commission set up by the south-west governments, said this in reaction to comments credited to Garba Shehu, a presidential spokesman.

In an interview on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme, on Tuesday, Shehu was quoted to have said the structure of the security outfit would be determined by the IGP.

Amotekun was established by the governments in the south-west in response to rising insecurity in the region.

In response to Shehu’s comments, Seye Oyeleye, DAWN director-general, said Amotekun would only be guided by the laws passed in the south-west states.

Oyelele said in a federal system, states are allowed to have their security outfits as long as they are backed up by laws.

“The houses of assembly in the six states in the south-west have passed laws to guide the operations of Amotekun in their states. I don’t know what he (Shehu) meant except he is saying that the order of the inspector-general of police supersedes the states’ laws,” PUNCH quoted the director-general as saying.

“Amotekun is guided by the states’ laws. The setting up of community policing should not in any way disturb the operations of Amotekun. In any federal system, there are multi-layers of policing and the more the merrier; Nigeria needs policing at different layers.

“The operations of Amotekun are guided by the laws duly passed by the houses of assembly in the six states in the region and the bills were assented to by the governors.

“When I read what was credited to Garba Shehu, I found it strange. The Ondo state Amotekun is fully operational. Even Garba Shehu contradicted himself while saying this. He said, on the one hand, the IG would supervise Amotekun, and on the other hand, he said Amotekun was guided by individual state laws.”

Oyeleye said community policing cannot be controlled by a single person in Abuja.

“We are operating a federal structure and Abuja should concentrate on its own community policing. I don’t want to believe that they are setting up their community policing structure to undermine what any state is doing,” he said.

NDLEA intercepts 607 cartons with over 11m tramadol tablets

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted another 607 cartons containing 11, 785, 800 tablets loaded with tramadol in Lagos.

A statement by the NDLEA Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Jonah Achema, said the Chairman, Muhammad Abdallah, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja.

Police detectives in Apapa Area Command of Lagos State had intercepted a 40-foot container laden with drugs suspected to be tramadol and codeine on Aug. 6.

The investigation further revealed another 40-foot container and the joint examination also revealed 255 cartons of different types of tramadol and other banned medicines on Aug. 19.

Abdallah noted that the interception and investigation were with the assistance and cooperation of the Customs Area Command, Apapa.

“This was discovered in another container number TCNU 9465832 belonging to the same suspect transferred to NDLEA by the Police.

“This is making it 3 containers used to carefully conceal illegally imported tramadol and other medicines to Nigeria,” he said.

Abdallah said that the NDLEA would do everything within its powers to get to the root of the drug trade and enjoined other security agencies to collaborate with the agency in its ongoing investigation.

He observed that the recent discovery of more tramadol using the same route from Pakistan Asia – Hamburg, Europe – Nigeria showed the dynamic system of operation by the drug cartel to beat security operatives.

“This discovery is a major breakthrough in the fight against illegal importation of tramadol into Nigeria.

Biafra: Igbo group petitions UN, AU, ECOWAS over gruesome killing of IPOB members

A southeast group, under the aegis of Alaigbo Development Foundation, ADF, on Wednesday petitioned international communities to wade into the gruesome murder of over 21 members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

The leadership of the group, in a statement signed by its President, Mr. Abia Onyike, and forwarded to DAILY POST in Abakaliki, however, tasked President Mohammadu Buhari to immediately remove the ban on IPOB activities.

It reads in part: “ADF unequivocally condemns the brutal massacre of over 21 Igbo youths in this latest phase of the Igbo genocide, the longest, most continuous and unresolved genocide in the political history of the African continent. The first phase of the Igbo genocide was from 1966-1970 and was used to inaugurate Africa’s age of pestilence as the first post-colonial genocide in the continent.

“ADF believes that this brutal massacre of unarmed and defenceless citizens who were meeting in an open space to discuss their affairs is the height of political impunity and arbitrariness on the part of the security agencies. We totally agree with the Assistant Inspector-General of Police(AIG), Zone 13, Danmallam Mohammed who described the assault on IPOB members by the security agents as “unbecoming and unfortunate”.

“ADF notes the ominous dimension whereby the only two Igbo personnel on the DSS side were the only casualties of the shooting on the side of the security agents. The security personnel were mainly Hausa-Fulani and the only victims were the Igbo elements in the security contingent.

The emerging theory that they were gunned down by their colleagues for purposes of covering up the cold-blooded atrocity, which they may have vehemently opposed, should not be discountenanced.

Mr. Onyike who is the former National Vice President Nigeria UnionJournalists, NUJ, noted further that “The time has come to compel the perpetrators of such pre-judicial killings to pay for their crimes against humanity. There is no law in Nigeria that authorized law enforcement agents to open fire and murder unarmed citizens, under whatever guise, without recourse to investigation and judicial prosecution. Nigeria is not a banana republic where trigger-happy

warlords are let loose to unleash mayhem on peaceful citizens without recourse to due process.

“The so-called proscription of IPOB which was hastily undertaken by the Federal Government ought to have been lifted by now. After all, other more deadly and armed terrorist organisation such as the Fulani

Herdsmen (categorized by the United Nations as the world’s fourth terrorist organisation) are yet to be proscribed by the Nigerian government. Moreover, the set of Igbo leaders who allowed themselves

to be used for the illegitimate exercise have since regretted their actions”.

“The Nigerian Government should learn to engage/ negotiate with the IPOB and other separatist groups fighting for self-determination and discontinue its present brazen policy of brutal massacre of peaceful agitators, such as IPOB.

“ADF calls on the UN, AU, ECOWAS, EU, USA, Britain and the International human rights organizations to immediately institute an investigation into the unprovoked genocide, for the purposes of bringing the state-sponsored murderers to justice. The time has come for the international community to demonstrate to us that they regard us as part of humanity and that Igbo lives also matter,” he stressed.

Ibadan ‘serial killer’: I killed another woman after my escape

Ibadan ‘serial killer’: I killed another woman after my escape

Sunday Shodipe, a suspected serial killer in Ibadan, Oyo state capital, says a herbalist mounted pressure on him to escape from police custody.

The 19-year-old disclosed this on Wednesday when he was paraded by Nwachukwu Enwonwu, the state commissioner of police.

Shodipe was arrested alongside two others in June in connection with a series of killings in Akinyele local government area of the state.

He, however, escaped from Mokola station where he was kept on August 11 but was rearrested on Sunday.

Explaining his escape, Shodipe said he fled the police station to carry out rituals in the interest of one Idris Ajani, a 50-year-old herbalist he was arrested with.

He said the herbalist threatened him in custody, saying there would be dire consequences if he did not escape to continue the killings.

He added that he killed another woman while on the run.

“Baba( herbalist) had been telling Officer Funsho to open the gate to allow us to take our bath but the officer did not answer him,” Shodipe said.

“Baba later told the officer that he needed to drink gin as an herbalist to prevent spirits from draining his blood but the officer still did not answer him.

“Baba had been blaming me for telling the police and the public that he was the one that sent me to kill and that I would have been released from the custody if I had been untruthful.

“Baba also told me that something terrible might happen to him if he stayed too long in police custody because of the sacrifices he had not been performing since his arrest.

“So, when the police later allowed me to go and bath in the evening at about 7.pm, I used the opportunity to escape and went to Akinyele to kill another woman.

“Baba sends me out and tells me to kill by reciting his name, Idris Adedokun Yunusa Ajani, in incantations. So, I killed the women to ensure Baba’s safety.”

The suspect added that before he was rearrested, he ran to Bodija to fend for himself by carrying luggage using a cap to conceal his identity.

Enwonwu said Shodipe, who was in police custody due to the congestion at the Nigeria Correctional Service facility in the state, would now be taken to the facility.

“The police officer involved in Shodipe’ s case is paying dearly for it and he is still in police custody facing disciplinary action which has been completed at the level of the command and forwarded to Abuja,” Enwonwu said.

PFN to Buhari: We reject offensive part of CAMA on churches

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, has rejected the offensive part of the Companies and Allied Matters Act, which gives a supervising minister power to sack the board of trustees of churches.

PFN, in a statement issued by the National President, Rev. Felix  Omobude said following the assent by President Muhammadu Buhari to the Companies and Allied Matters Bill passed by the National Assembly, the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has continued to receive calls from several organisations and individuals, far and wide, expressing worry and concern about the law, especially as it related to provisions of Section 839 of the Act.

“The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has been in consultation with its team of legal Advisers to look at the provisions of the law so that it can come to an informed position and be properly advised on what to do, should the concerns be deemed genuine.

“Following a briefing by its team of legal Advisers, the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) is convinced that there is indeed cause for concern about the Companies and Allied Matters Act recently signed into law, as it concerns civil society organizations, religious bodies and other not-for-profit concerns,” it said.

PFN said its concerns were founded around provisions of Section 839 (1) (a),(b),(c) which it saw as contrary to Section 6(6) and Section 36 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“We believe that these provisions, among others, leave the door open to abuse, denial of fair hearing, arbitrariness and dubious use of power by the Commission and/or its agents.

“The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) is concerned at the provision which makes recourse to the vague and nebulous phrase “public interest” as grounds for taking over a non-governmental organisation by the Commission and/or its agents, contrary to Section 36 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Not only are there contradictions in the law, we believe that some of its provisions are indeed already covered by other legislations.

“In the light of this, we call on President Muhammadu Buhari, the leadership of the Senate and the House of Representatives to immediately set in motion the machinery for a quick review of the offensive parts in the legislation,” it added.

The body said it stood with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and reaffirmed her position on this matter, saying that it was reviewing all options on the table and would be taking actions in pursuit of a remedy accordingly.

“We intend to assert our constitutional rights, following the prescribed procedure for redress, to ensure that the not-for-profit sector which has been standing in the gap for the disadvantaged and underprivileged Nigerians, in the face of neglect by government at all levels, is able to continues to do so without hindrance,” it stated.

We will drag you to court – Barcelona fires back at Messi over exit threats

Barcelona have warned Lionel Messi that he faces a legal battle if he is to force his way out of the club.

On Tuesday, Messi sent a burofax to the Spanish club, confirming his desire to leave.

The 33-year-old asked Barca to activate an exit clause in his contract, which allows him to walk away at the end of any season for free.

However, Barcelona are understood to have replied to his transfer request, by urging him to stay put or the matter would have to be resolved in court.

The club believes Messi is unable to activate the clause after June, while the player feels the season actually ended in August following the COVID-19 break.

Barca have set out their legal terms for a situation where Messi refuses to stay and insists he will not leave as a free agent.

The board are believed to have called an emergency meeting as soon as Messi’s message arrived, while Josep Bartomeu has been asked to step down as president immediately.

NAFDAC DG: 40 herbal remedies for COVID-19 undergoing review

NAFDAC DG: 40 herbal remedies for COVID-19 undergoing review

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), on Tuesday, said it has received about 40 applications for the approval of herbal formulations for the treatment of COVID-19.

Speaking during an online news conference, Mojisola Adeyeye, NAFDAC director-general, said the herbal formulations were undergoing review to ensure their safety for use.

According to NAN, Adeyeye said there was no cure for COVID-19 and emphasised that any claim to the contrary must be subjected to clinical trials.

“In March 2019, we inaugurated the Nigerian Herbal Medicine Product Committee (HMPC) to bridge the gap often created between traditional medicine practitioners and researchers,” she said.

“COVID-19 pandemic created an opportunity and we have been encouraging traditional medicine practitioners to submit their herbal formulations for evaluation.

“We also developed guidelines on how to register herbal medicine online and the labelling of the product.

“Professor Maurice Iwu’s application for approval of a herbal medicine for management of COVID-19 is also part of the 40 applications we are reviewing for safety. We use animals for safety tests to ensure the formulation will not kill anybody.

“Until a clinical trial is done in a scientific manner, no herbal medicine manufacturer can claim cure or effectiveness to treat COVID-19 associated symptoms. I believe that Nigeria’s herbal medicines may be able to cure COVID-19.”

She added that herbal remedies have huge potential and “it is time to translate research of herbs into products of proven safety and efficacy, for the benefit of our people”.

As of August 24, 2020, a total of 52,548 coronavirus infections had been confirmed in Nigeria, out of which 39,257 recoveries and 1,004 deaths have been recorded.

SOUTH WEST !! Presidency’s move to control Amotekun is arrant nonsense – Adebanjo

Elder statesman, Chief Ayo Adebanjo on Tuesday attacked the presidency for saying that the Inspector General of Police would determine the structure of Southwest regional security outfit, Amotekun.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu had said during a programme on Channels TV that the IGP would determine the structure of Amotekun.

Shehu was speaking on the approval of N13bn by the Federal Government for community policing across the 36 states of the federation.

He said, “Whatever name they go by, Amotekun or whatever, will be streamlined and they will be run in accordance with the structure as defined by the Inspector-General of Police. They will be localised, they will be owned by local communities, they will be managed by them.”

The President’s spokesman further stated that the community policing structure would be the same across the 36 states and whatever does not conform with the national structure would not be “in the scheme of things”.

But Adebanjo, in an interview rejected the presidency’s assertion, saying that they are ‘arrant nonsense.’

According to him, “What Shehu said is arrant nonsense! Is he the Attorney General (of the federation)? He is just talking trash. Please quote me.

“They are controlling the police from the centre, it is not working, now they want to control Amotekun again from the same position? Do you have an IG of police in America? Even in Britain, it is not centralized. What you have is metropolitan police.”

Adebanjo wondered: “How can you send someone from Jigawa State to control the police in Ibadan? What does he know? You say the Governors are the chief security officers of their states, yet they control nothing, what kind of arrangement is that?”

He said Shehu might not understand  as the issue was beyond him.

He added: “I don’t want to engage him because he may not understand. The issue is beyond him. Amotekun is the case of localizing security, yet they want to control it from the Centre like the police, how?”

The Governor was represented by the Rivers State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Desmond Akawor.

‘Fani-Kayode behaved like gangster’ – NUJ reacts to ex-Minister’s attack on reporter

The Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, has condemned Femi Fani-Kayode, former Minister of Aviation, over his verbal attack on a reporter with Daily Trust Newspaper, Charles Eyo.

NUJ berated Fani-Kayode for what it tagged as “gangster-like” attack on the journalist.

Fani-Kayode could be seen in a viral video hurling abusive words on the reporter during a press briefing for asking him what he termed “insulting question.”

Reacting, NUJ President, Chris Isiguzo, in a statement, stressed that the reporter only asked “a simple question” and Fani-Kayode’s comment was uncalled for.

He said: “For him to have embarked on an assessment of projects in some states, even though we are yet to be told under what platform, he is doing so, it is proper for the media to hold him to account for his actions and decisions.”

Isiguzo said Fani-Kayode’s reaction to the question was against “simple decorum and civility” and, therefore, “unacceptable, dishonourable and reprehensible.”

He demanded a retraction from him.

“By delving into politics and holding political office, Fani Kayode is very conversant with the watchdog role of the media.

“We are more shocked that the same Kayode who had in recent times, used his social media handles to call leaders to account is at the same time attacking a journalist for a simple demand for him to unmask those behind his nationwide tour.

“He had already visited six states. This is indeed, terribly disappointing.

“By denigrating the journalist, Fani Kayode has exposed himself the more as an intolerant and unstable person who will not want his activities closely scrutinised by the media.”

Daily Trust: We’ll hold Fani-Kayode responsible if any harm befalls our reporter

Daily Trust: We’ll hold Fani-Kayode responsible if any harm befalls our reporter

The management of Media Trust Limited, publishers of Daily Trust, has kicked against the verbal assault Femi Fani-Kayode launched on its reporter.

TheCable had reported how Fani-Kayode, former minister of aviation,  attacked Eyo Charles, a journalist who asked him a question at a press conference in Calabar, Cross River state, last week.

Eyo, a reporter with Daily Trust, had asked the ex-minister if his recent trips were being sponsored and Fani-Kayode flew into a rage shortly after.

In a statement, Naziru Abubakar, executive director/editor-in-chief of Daily Trust, said the attack on the reporter who was doing his job “is an indication of the chilling disregard he has towards the media, and its work in investigating and reporting on issues”.

The newspaper said Fani-Kayode’s “reprehensible actions” raises major concerns over the safety of journalists in Nigeria.

The newspaper called on the police to take note of the ex-minister’s action, saying he would be held responsible if anything untoward happens to the reporter.

“The encounter occurred in Calabar, Cross River State, in the morning of Thursday 20, August 2020 at a hotel, during a roundtable with invited journalists,” the organisation said.

“During the roundtable, Charles asked Fani-Kayode who was bankrolling his recent trips around Nigeria, to which the ex-minister responded with a raised voice, insults, and eventually a threat to inflict bodily harm on our reporter.

“The barrage continued for some minutes, while bewildered journalists, including our reporter, looked on.

“The video clip, also released on one of the ex-ministers social media accounts, was conveniently edited to exclude the question asked by Charles, totally devoid of mischief, simply sought clarification and information, like good journalism should.

“Said editing paved the way for a social media lynch mob to rain expletives on our reporter, labelling him as ‘rude’.

“This could not be further away from the truth, and we stand by Charles, and commend him for his calmness during the ordeal.

“Daily Trust reporters are responsible professionals, who uphold the tenets of journalism, as well as best practices.

“As always, we stand in solidarity with our reporters and will continue to fight for the rights of all journalists. After all, journalism is part of the bedrock of democracy; therefore practitioners must not be intimidated or threatened as they carry out their work.

“We urge the Nigeria Police to take note, that if anything happens to Charles, Daily Trust will hold Fani-Kayode responsible, especially due to the intensity of the verbal threats he issued during the shocking incident.”
