EFCC Arraigns Jonathan’s Doctor For N258m Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arraigned Dr. Fortunate Fiberesima, the ex-Chief Physician to former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The EFCC said in a statement by its spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, that Fiberesima, who is also a former Chief Executive Officer, State House Medical Centre, was arraigned for an alleged fraud of N258.9m.

The doctor was arraigned before Justice Peter Affen of the Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja on six counts bordering on money laundering.

Fiberesima was alleged to have abused his position as the chief physician to the President in 2012 in awarding a contract to a company where he had an interest.

According to the anti-graft agency, the defendant, who also parades himself as Fortunate David and David ThankGod Fiberesima, was initially meant to be arraigned by the EFCC on March 7, but the trial judge observed that, “all the charges are under the ICPC Act and not that of the EFCC” and consequently ordered that the charge be either amended or transferred to the appropriate authority for prosecution.

At the resumed sitting on Tuesday, the defendant pleaded not guilty to all the charges preferred against him by the EFCC.

One of the charges read,  “That you, Dr. Fortunate Fiberesima (a.k.a. Fortunate David and David ThankGod Fiberesima), being the former Chief Executive Officer of the State House Medical Centre, Abuja and Chief Physician to the President, while employed in the public service, sometime in 2012, in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, knowingly and directly held a private interest in the contract for land reclamation at the State House Medical Centre, Abuja in the sum of N258,950,000, which contract was awarded to T. E. & C Limited, a company in which you were a director, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 12 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.”

Counsel for the defendant, U. B. Eyo, prayed the court to grant his client bail in liberal terms. He said the accused person had no previous criminal record and he would always be available for his trial.

Counsel for the EFCC, Y. Y. Tarfa, did not oppose the bail application.

Justice Affen ordered that the defendant should continue on the bail condition earlier granted him but added that he should submit his passport to the court registrar.

The case was, thereafter, adjourned till June 6, 2017 for commencement of trial. - Punch

The President has reiterated that all past and present corrupt officials will be probed.
He said the anti-corruption agencies have been repositioned to undertake the legal battle against them.Buhari said this in his address at a summit on Security and Development Agenda for Northern Nigeria organized by Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation on Tuesday in Kaduna.

20 dead as boat capsizes in Senegal

Dakar (AFP) - At least 20 people, almost all women, were killed when a wooden boat capsized off Senegal's central coast in a delta region popular with tourists, firefighters told AFP on Tuesday.
The incident occurred on Monday night, with the traditional flat-bottomed boat overturning off Bettenty, an island area just north of The Gambia, with 72 on board.
All except two of those on board were women, said Commander Umar Kane, a senior firefighting official.
"Unfortunately, we have 20 bodies and one person missing," Kane told AFP, saying another 51 people had been rescued.

He said there were only two men on board.
The boat capsized as the women were on their way to look for seafood, he said. The incident occurred in a coastal area well known for its delicacies like oysters, where tourists flock in large numbers.
Bettenty is an island area in the Saloum delta where such boats, known as pirogues, are often used for travelling between the mangroves and from one islet to another.
It was not immediately clear what caused the accident, with divers called in to help the search, Kane said.

L'Observateur daily said the boat had capsized in high winds, while other newspapers said it had foundered because it was overloaded.
Echos of Joola
Several papers recalled the Joola tragedy of 2002 when a ferry sunk during a storm, killing more than 1,800 people in what was one of the world's worst-ever maritime disasters.
In that incident, the ferry was licensed to hold just 580 people, including crew, but investigators found it was carrying well over 2,000 when it went down while passing the Gambian coast.

Only 64 people were rescued.
The Bettenty sinking came 12 days after a deadly fire ripped through a Muslim retreat in southeastern Senegal killing around 30 people.
Police are still investigating the cause of the blaze which hit a site visited every year by hundreds and sometimes thousands of pilgrims from the country's powerful Tijaniyya Muslim brotherhood.
Initial reports suggested it may have been caused by a gas canister which exploded while pilgrims were making tea in a straw shelter, with police arresting four people.

Nigeria meningitis deaths rise to 813 – health minister

More than 800 people have died in a meningitis outbreak in Nigeria but the disease is now spreading more slowly, health minister Isaac Adewole said on Wednesday.
“As of yesterday (Tuesday), the number of deaths stood at 813,” he told reporters in Abuja after a cabinet meeting. “As of now, we are noticing a decline.

“This is week 16. This is also expected because we are moving away from the active season. We are confident that in the next couple of weeks everything will be over.”
The outbreak of meningitis C is concentrated in northern Nigeria, where a mass vaccination programme has begun to limit its spread.
On April 19, the government said 745 people had died — a spike of more than 50 percent from the previous week — and there had been more than 8,000 suspected cases.
Five northern states accounted for the majority of cases.
Nigeria lies on the so-called “meningitis belt” of sub-Saharan Africa that stretches from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east, where outbreaks are a regular occurrence.
Early prevention of the disease, which is spread through coughs, sneezes and close contact, was hindered by a lack of available vaccine for the type of meningitis C strain responsible.
Adewole said the government was exploring the creation of a joint venture with a local drug manufacturer to produce vaccines in Nigeria itself.

Man ‘sentenced to death for atheism’ in Saudi Arabia

al-Sharq newspaper's initial report on the arrest of man identified as Ahmad Al Shamri for apostasy and blasphemy in 2014© The Independent al-Sharq newspaper's initial report on the arrest of man identified as Ahmad Al Shamri for apostasy and blasphemy in 2014

A man in Saudi Arabia has reportedly been sentenced to death on charges of apostasy after losing two appeals.

Several local media reports identified the man as Ahmad Al Shamri, in his 20s, from the town of Hafar al-Batin, who first came to the authorities’ attention in 2014 after allegedly uploading videos to social media in which he renounced Islam and the Prophet Mohammed.

He was arrested on charges of atheism and blasphemy and held in prison before being convicted by a local court and sentenced to death in February 2015.

At the time Mr Shamri’s defence entered an insanity plea, adding that his client was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of making the videos.

He reportedly lost an Appeals Court case, and a Supreme Court ruled against him earlier this week.
While news stories in the last few years consistently identify Mr Shamri, his identity or sentencing has not been verified by the Saudi authorities.

The Independent’s requests for comment from Saudi government representatives were not immediately answered.

Under Saudi Arabia’s strict religious laws, leaving Islam can be punishable by harsh prison sentences and corporeal punishment - and a 2014 string of royal decrees under the late King Abdullah re-defined atheists as terrorists, according to a report by Human Rights Watch.

Last year, a citizen was sentenced to 10 years in prison and 2,000 lashes for expressing atheistic sentiment in hundreds of social media posts.
Mr Shamri’s name and hometown have trended on Arabic-speaking Twitter in the last few days.

Some users have even celebrated his sentencing.
“If you're a lowkey atheist that's fine. But once you talk in public & criticize God or religion, then you shall be punished,” one such post read.

“I wish there could be live streaming when you cut his head off,” said another.
International human rights watchdogs have consistently condemned Saudi Arabia’s human rights record.

Beyoncé And Jay Z Are Buying A $120 Million, Bullet-Proof Mansion

The Bel Air property has four pools (one simply isn't enough), eight bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, a recording studio space, and a media room. Also, there's a garage that fits 15 cars. Oh, and also a spa. Oh wait, and also bullet-proof windows.

Naturally, the mansion (which consists of six separate "structures") is shrouded in security and sits on two acres. A source tells Page Six, "The house is beyond words. No expense was spared in design or execution."

If Beyoncé and Jay Z win their bid, their neighbours in East Gate Bel Air will be Salma Hayek, Tom Jones and Michael Eisner. The couple are said to be moving away from NYC to have more privacy, and are hoping to be settled by the time Beyoncé's twins arrive in June.

My Wife's Love For Bearing Kids Is Too Much - Man Seeks Divorce From Court

A civil servant, Michael Ayinde, on Wednesday pleaded with an Igando Customary Court in Lagos to end his marriage because of his wife’s penchant for making babies.

Mr. Ayinde, 39, told court that his wife, whose name he gave as Glory, enjoyed “giving birth at will’’.

According to him, Glory has made six children within the nine-year duration of their marriage.

Mr. Ayinde explained that before he married Glory, he had warned her that he needed only two kids, irrespective of their gender so that he could afford their upkeep.

He said that Glory reached an agreement with him on the matter, only for her to discard the agreement.

“My lord, my wife wants to kill me with children; she is bearing them like rats.
“My wife agreed to have two kids with me but after marriage, she started having children like rats, in nine years, she delivered six children
“She was sacked from her work place just because she gets pregnant immediately after she resumed from a maternity leave.
“I have sold my cars and some of my property to cater for the children.
“After she had the fourth baby, I begged her to go for family planning, she refused.
“I had to force her to the hospital for a family planning device but she went secretly to deactivate it without my consent.
“Some months later, she went to her parent’s place and sent me text message that she was pregnant.
“She did not return home until after delivering and naming the baby in her parent’s place.

Mr. Ayinde said that on December 24, 2016, Glory left home again for her parent’s place, where she called again that was pregnant and that she would be back after delivering.

“Last month, she called me that she had delivered and named the baby, David.

“Please sir, dissolve this marriage because if I continue to live with this woman, she will continue to have more children.
“I will be compelled to sell my remaining property, which is my house and then, become a beggar.”
Mr. Ayinde also accused his wife, who was not in court of starving him and their children of food.
“My wife starves us of food. I always buy food stuff at home but she will never cook.
“If she managed to cook once in two weeks, the food is always tasteless.
“I don’t eat her food anymore because I vomit anytime I eat her food.”
The father of six also alleged that his wife was not washing his clothes and those of their children.

He said that he had employed a dry cleaner to wash clothes for him and his kids.

The President of the court, Adegboyega Omilola, however, ordered bailiffs to serve Glory another summon for the next adjournment of the matter.

He adjourned the case until May 16 for further hearing, Premium Times reports.

Court jails driver seven years for causing passenger’s death over N20

A Katsina State High Court sitting in Malumfashi on Wednesday sentenced a commercial bus driver, Hassan Sanusi, to seven years imprisonment without an option of a fine, for causing the death of a passenger over N20 change disagreement.
Sanusi, 35, of Shuwaki Quarters in Funtua, Katsina State, was convicted after being found guilty of the offence of culpable homicide not punishable with death, according to Section 224 of the Penal Code.

According to the charge sheet, the offence occurred on Nov. 2, 2012, at Danja junction in Bakori local government area when Sanusi was said to have negligently and rashly driven his Toyota bus and smashed the head of one Hajara Idris with a rear tyre, over a N20 change disagreement with his conductor.
Idris was hospitalised and died as the result of the injuries sustained.
Delivering the judgment, the trial judge, Justice Abbas Bawale, said he had taken cognisance of the convict’s plea for leniency. However, he must be punished to serve as a deterrent to others as the deceased was lying in the grave, waiting for justice.
Bawale said the prosecution had successfully proved the case beyond reasonable doubt as required by law, adding that the lead prosecution counsel, Mr Sani Danmanlam, led seven witnesses and tendered six exhibits during the trial.
He said the testimonies and exhibits had corroborated the occurrence of the offence and sentenced the convict to seven years imprisonment, without an option of fine.
Meanwhile, the Court has discharged Abdullahi Haruna, 29, the Bus Conductor, for failure of the prosecution to prove his charge of abetting Sanusi to commit the offence of culpable homicide.
Haruna of Tudun Wada Quarters in Funtua, regained freedom as he was in prison custody since the case was first mentioned on April 30, 2014, for his failure to meet up with the bail conditions, but Sanusi, who enjoyed bail was apprehended and taken to prison after the verdict.

Nigeria Will Be Out Of Recession By 3rd Quarter – Emefiele

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has said that with the current efforts by the Federal Government to revive the country’s economy, the country should be out of recession by the third quarter of this year.

Emefiele also said the CBN would continue with its intervention in the foreign exchange market, adding that efforts by the apex bank so far had been yielding positive results.

He added that the country had started to see a downward trend in the prices of commodities, indicating a reduction in the rate of inflation.

“We are very much optimistic that by the end of the second quarter, or latest the third quarter, we should be out of recession that we are in right now,” he said.

The CBN governor said these after meeting with the leadership of the Senate on Tuesday.

Emefiele, while briefing journalists after the meeting, said discussions were held between the apex bank and the legislature on the current state of the economy.

He said, “Actually, the Senate President invited us to come and brief the Senate leadership in a closed session and to provide some updates on the foreign exchange markets. You would have observed that in the last two months, the central bank has been involved in some form of intensive intervention in the foreign exchange market and this has fortunately resulted in a downward trend in the parallel market price of foreign exchange, from as high as N525 to a dollar to as low as N370.

“Right now, it hovers between N370 and N380. I think it’s an opportunity for me to say that we are going to continue this intervention because the reserves look very good. As I speak to you, our (external) reserves stand at above $31bn and that provides us enough of firepower or ammunition to be able to defend the currency, and we will do so with all intensity to ensure that foreign exchange is procured by everybody.."

“If you want to import raw materials, you will get foreign exchange; you want to import plant and equipment, you will get foreign exchange; you want to pay school fees or you are a small business that wants to buy foreign exchange for you to import your small items, you will procure foreign exchange.”
Emefiele recalled that the CBN had last week announced a policy to encourage foreign investors in the country’s forex market.

Idiat Reveals Why She Was Attacked At Adeleke's Burial

An aide to Governor Rauf Aregbesola who was attacked at the burial of late senator, Isiaka Adeleke, on Monday, Idiat Babalola, on Tuesday said her attackers picked on her simply over unfounded rumors that she wants to be deputy governor after the current tenure of the governor.

Ms. Babalola, who was attacked shortly after arriving the venue of the burial, said she sensed trouble when some of the hoodlums started to make utterances which suggested that her rumoured deputy governorship ambition was to checkmate the governorship ambition of the late senator, who had openly declared his intention to succeed Mr. Aregbesola in 2018.

Explaining further, Ms. Babalola, who served in the last cabinet as Special Adviser to the Governor on Federal Matters, said her attackers could not have been acting over anything against Governor Aregbesola but simply on the local politics of Ede, where she also hails from just as the late Mr. Adeleke.

“I am a proud daughter of Ede and Uncle Isiaka has been a mentor and we never had any disagreement till the news of his death was broken to me while in Lagos on Sundaymorning. I was heartbroken and immediately cut all my other engagements and came down to Ede from Lagos.

“We worked together with Uncle for the re-election of Governor Aregbesola in 2014 and for his own election into the Senate in 2015.

“Those who masterminded the attacks on me are people with poor understanding of the relationship between us and who act based on their own political permutations only,” Ms. Babalola said .

She explained that she was at the burial in company of her father, S. Babalola, a prominent industrialist who is also a friend to the late father of Mr. Adeleke.

“Not long after we sat down for the prayers, I sensed some hoodlums saying some things like I wanting to be deputy governor while Uncle (Senator Adeleke) has declared his ambition to be governor from the same Ede. I heard them talking about the new caretaker committee members being more of my loyalists than those of Senator Adeleke. And before we knew it, they grew more daring and unruly and brought down the canopy on the dignitaries present. It was the most unruly and irresponsible act I have seen in our land in history,” Ms. Babalola said. - Premium Times

Court orders temporary forfeiture of Patience Jonathan’s $5.8m

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday ordered a temporal forfeiture of $5.8 million belonging to a former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, to the Federal Government.
The order followed the ex-parte application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, seeking the forfeiture of the amount to government, pending the determination of the motion on notice.

Moving the ex-parte application, counsel to the EFCC, Rotimi Oyedepo, urged the court to grant the order as prayed.
Justice Mojisola Olatoregun held: “order is granted as prayed.”
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the court order came barely 24 hours after the EFCC withdrew an application for stay of prosecution of the court’s earlier ruling, unfreezing Jonathan’s account.
Mrs. Olatoregun had sometimes in November, 2016 granted a forfeiture order of the said sum following an application by the commission.
The court, however, issued another order in March, vacating the earlier one.
The vacation of the order followed an application by Mrs. Jonathan’s counsel, Ifedayo Adedipe, who had challenged the propriety of the EFCC’s action.
In the new motion titled “Action in Rem,” the commission sought an order for interim forfeiture of the said $5.8 million lodged in the Skye Bank.
The commission also sought an order directing the interim forfeiture of N2.4 billion discovered in an EcoBank account in the name of La Wari Furniture and Bath Ltd, suspected to be proceeds of crime.
It further sought for the publication in any national newspaper, of the said order, to enable any interested party to appear and show why the interim order should not be made final.
In an affidavit, the commission averred that it received an intelligence report that funds suspected to be proceeds of crime were warehoused in a Skye Bank account belonging to Mrs. Jonathan.
It said that the report was analysed and found worthy of investigation, adding that the ex- First Lady opened the account on February 7, 2013.
According to the commission, several cash deposits were made by the ex- First Lady in United States Dollars, through Waripamo Dudafa, a former aide to ex- President Goodluck Jonathan.
The commission averred that another frequent depositor of funds into the said account was one Festus Iyoha, a steward in the State House, Abuja.
The EFCC said that between February 8, 2013 and January 30, 2015, about $6.7 million suspected to be proceeds of crime were deposited into the account.
According to the commission, Mrs. Jonathan had dissipated the funds, leaving a balance of about $5.7 million.
The commission further averred that if the fund was not forfeited in the interim, it may be fully dissipated by Jonathan.
It added that N2.03 billion, suspected proceeds of crime, was currently on fixed deposit in the account of La Wari Furniture, in addition to a credit balance of about N389 million.
The commission urged the court to grant the application in the interest of justice.
Granting the order, Justice Olatoregun adjourned the case till May 15, to enable any interested party to appear and show cause why the interim order should not be made final.

The state Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Wasiu Anifowoshe, who disclosed this at the ongoing ministerial press briefing to commemorate the second year anniversary of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, also said that the government had not relented in the proposed relocation of Computer Village in Ikeja to ICT Park, Katangowa in Agbado/OkeOdo LCDA to tackle environmental degradation and meet the growing demand for housing stock deficit in the state.

He said: “What happened in Alimosho was because of pipeline vandalism. If people have not been greedy to vandalise pipeline, we will not be seeing what is happening.” The commissioner, who noted that the state government was also working with the Federal Government to relocate tank farms in residential areas in Apapa, also warned owners of structures under high tension cables to relocate in their best interest as government would spare no effort in removing such illegal structures, adding that event centres illegally located would also be demolished.
He said: “Government has commenced the process of relocating Okobaba Sawmill in Ebute-Metta to Timberville in Agbowa/Ikosi Ejinrin Local Council Development Area (LCDA). The relocation is at no cost to the sawmillers.

This followed a motion moved by a member of the Assembly representing Ojo Constituency I, Victor Akande and seconded by Gbolahan Yishau from Eti-Osa Constituency II.
The lawmakers said if the situation was not urgently addressed, it would wreck more havoc on Lagos despite its megacity plan.
The Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, said: “This is not what we want in Lagos and it is time for us to act fast. It is important for us to urge the commissioner to, as a matter of urgency, direct the state task force and other agencies to drive these people out of the road.

Meet the 37 year old woman who has given birth to 38 children

A 37-year-old Ugandan mother has stunned many after giving birth to 38 children . Mariam Nabatanzi Babirye, is nicknamed Nalongo Muzaala Bana, which means “the twin mother who produces quadruplets.”

Mariam has six sets of twins, four sets of triplets, three sets of quadruplets and two single births. In a recent interview with a Ugandan daily, she said:

“My father gave birth to 45 children with different women and [they] all came in quintuplets, quadruplets, twins and triplets.”
Mariam says her father had 45 children, many of whom came in quintuplets, quadruplets and twins.

Dr Charles Kiggundu, a gynecologist at Mulago Hospital confirms that Mariam may have taken after her father, as her case may be genetic.
He said: “Her case is genetic predisposition to hyper-ovulate (releasing multiple eggs in one cycle), which significantly increases the chance of having multiples.
Mariam said she was married off at an early age and she gave birth for the first time at the age of 13 to twins.

She said she sought medical advice several times in a bid to stop having children but doctors advised her that since she produces so many eggs, it would be dangerous to her health.

However, Dr Kiggundu said Mariam was not well advised, because doctors could easily have performed tubal ligation as a permanent method of contraception.

President Muhammadu Buhari Absent At FEC Meeting Again

President Muhammadu Buhari is today conspicuously absent at the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting.

The meeting is being presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

The cabinet had awaited the president's arrival until the State House Chief of Protocols suddenly stepped in at 11.00am and whispered to Osinbajo.

A security officer had also stood anxiously behind the president's official seat in expectation of Buhari's attendance.

The Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa are scanty as only about 20 ministers were seated as of the time journalists were leaving.

Osinbajo kick-started the meeting with a call for the recitation of the national anthem as well as prayers by the Ministers of Education and Health, Adamu Adamu and Isaac Adewole respectively.

Immediately the meeting commenced, ministers were sighted curiously whispering.

A fortnight ago, Buhari was also absent at the weekly council meeting.

The meeting did not hold last week with the Presidency citing the Easter break.

The acting Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Dr Habibat Lawan, is in attendance.
Lawan became acting SGF last Wednesday following the suspension of Babachir David Lawal who is being investigated for alleged mismanagement of funds meant for the development of the northeast.

Man comes home to find his girlfriend sleeping in bed with another man, takes selfies with them and posts online

Duston Holloway, 23, from Texas arrived home one evening to find his beloved girlfriend, lying drunk in bed with another man. He couldn't believe his eyes, the heartbreak was unimaginable but instead of reacting by shouting or fighting like other men might do, he rather carried out sweet revenge, by taking selfies with the sleeping pair and posted it online.

He posted the pictures on his Facebook with the caption: “When you come home to another man in your bed with the one you loved! Good men deserve good women.”

The photos elicited good reactions from his followers especially women who praised him for his actions, and told him that he'll get the right woman who will love him and value him dearly.

Duston also revealed on Facebook that he wanted to “kick” the stranger’s “a**” but decided to act as a boss.

“But I calmly just took selfies and walked like a boss lol. I did tap her to wake her up but she was drunk as a skunk passed out.

“I was gonna ask if I was gonna have to sleep in the spare bedroom and what kinda breakfast the dude liked lmao.”
