RETROGRESSIVE NORTH !! Allowing underage married girls to vote may impede Nigeria’s electoral process

Who would have thought that some “stakeholders” will propose that married underage girls be recognised as eligible voters? Anyway, it happened.

In December, the national assembly joint committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) made the recommendation to a technical committee which will work on the new electoral law proposed by the federal lawmakers.

The proposal came two weeks after the lawmakers held a public hearing on a bill seeking to amend the electoral act in November.

The recommendation was greeted with harsh criticisms and some citizens alleged that it is ploy by the north to have the upper hand in producing the president by way of rigging — an allegation that has not been proved.

Already, the north is seen to have a large population even though the last census was conducted more than 10 years ago. Taking Kano as an example, President Muhammadu Buhari polled 1.9 million votes in 2015 polls and 1.4 million in 2019.

It is believed that the north has the majority of underage brides in the country which could mean more voting population for the region.

The constitution currently pegs the eligible age for voting and marriage at 18. A 2016 report said one out of two girls under 18 years and one in five girls under 15 are married.

The report also noted these girls are susceptible to HIV/AIDS, cervical cancer, and Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF).

But speaking at inauguration of the technical committee, Kabiru Gaya, chairman of the senate committee on INEC, said the recommendation recognising underage married girls as eligible voters was a unanimous decision by the joint panel.

“The joint committee has proposed that if a lady who is not up to 18 years is married, she should be considered to be mature enough and be eligible to vote,” Gaya had said.

Opposing the senator’s view, Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, said the issue of voting age is a constitutional matter, adding that the law also recognises 18 as marriageable age.

However, the federal lawmakers insisted that the technical committee work on the recommendation.

After some much backlash, Gaya on February 2, said his committee had dropped the recommendation after deliberating on the matter extensively.

While speaking with reporters on the sidelines of a forum organised by NAN in Abuja, the senator said those stakeholders who made the proposal were well in their right to do so.

“Generally there was a lot of noise about. It was in a memorandum submitted by a group of people and they have their rights as Nigerians,” he said.

“But when we came to the committee, we discussed a lot on that and at the end of the day, we felt we could not go along with that suggestion and it was dropped.”

It is not uncommon to see many post-election litigation in Nigeria, with candidates claiming that they won whatever position they contested for.

Passing a law that recognises married underage girls as voters may only impede the country’s electoral process and bring about confusion because the constitution has 18 as the eligible age to vote.

Whereas the constitution is superior to any act or law, litigants will always want to have their day in court and if a case goes in an applicant’s favour, a “bad” precedent would have been set.

The trust of Nigerians in the system to deliver on their expectations has since waned. Enacting a not-well-thought-out law will only put the electoral process in jeopardy going by the aforementioned concerns.

Donald Trump not off the hook yet, faces criminal charges

Former US president Donald Trump is not off the hook, though he was acquitted by his Republican senators of inciting insurrection on the Capitol on 6 January.

According to reports, he faces a slew of criminal charges for inciting the attack and for trying to steal victory.

“He’s worried about it,” an adviser close to the former president told CNN on Saturday night.

Trump has voiced the fear over the past several weeks, sources told the network.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a former ally of Trump who has blamed him for the insurrection, also warned Saturday the ex-president could be prosecuted in the future.

He stressed that while Congress has exhausted its avenues for punishing Trump, the US justice system has not.

“President Trump is still liable for everything he did while he was in office,” McConnell said. “He didn’t get away with anything yet.”

Trump was acquitted Saturday on charges of inciting an insurrection at the US Capitol, after a majority of Senate Republicans closed ranks and refused to punish the former president in his historic second impeachment trial.

The five-day trial saw Democratic prosecutors argue — bolstered by dramatic video of the January 6 riot in which five people were killed — that Trump betrayed his oath by whipping up his supporters into storming Congress in a last-ditch attempt to cling to power.

It concluded as expected with a majority of Republicans declaring him not guilty, in a sign of the powerful grip the 74-year-old Trump continues to exert on his party.

But while the 57-43 majority that voted to convict fell short of the two-thirds needed in the Senate, seven Republicans joined with Democrats to seek Trump’s conviction, making it the most bipartisan impeachment trial in US history.

Trump, who has been secluded in his Florida club since leaving office on January 20, welcomed the verdict — denouncing the proceedings as “yet another phase of the greatest witch hunt in the history of our country.”

But McConnell’s blistering attack may have denied him a victory to totally savour.

The former Trump ally called Trump’s actions preceding the assault a “disgraceful dereliction” of duty.

“There’s no question — none — that president Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day,” McConnell told the chamber after the vote.

Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives on January 13, a week after the chaotic assault that stunned the nation and provoked widespread bipartisan outrage.

Democrats argued that Trump’s behaviour was an “open and shut” case of impeachable conduct, retracing how he spent two months repeating the falsehood that the election was stolen, before inciting his supporters to attack Congress and stop the certification of Joe Biden’s victory.

“He summoned his supporters to Washington… whipped them into a frenzy, and directed them at the Capitol,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said after the vote.

The defense team swatted the evidence away, arguing that Trump’s appeal to supporters to “fight like hell, at the rally that preceded the attack,” was merely rhetorical.

Northern elders spokesman to Buhari: Nigeria on fire under you — do something

Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, spokesman of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to act swiftly as the country is being “set on fire”.

In a Twitter post on Saturday evening, Baba-Ahmed said Nigerians living in any part of the country must be protected.

He said there will not be any attack on southerners living in the north as a response to the alleged attack on northerners in the south.

“Attacking innocent southerners living in the north will not be the right response to attacks on northerners in the south,” Baba-Ahmed said.

“We should demand that Nigerians, wherever they are, must be protected. President and Governors: Do something, NOW! They are setting the country on fire under you!”

On Saturday, there was an outbreak of violence in Shasha area in Ibadan, Oyo state capital, which reportedly led to the death of one person.

The property of residents and wares of traders i Shasha market were also destroyed. Seyi Makinde, the state governor, ordered the immediate closure of the market.

Kayode Fayemi, governor of Ekiti, had condemned the violence in Ibadan, warning that the crisis could spread to other parts of the country.

Also, there has been rising tension over the activities of herdsmen in the south-west. Some herders have been accused of killings and kidnappings in the region.

On Sunday, the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, said the group will retaliate the killing of herders in any part of the country.

TERRORIST ORANISATION !! Miyetti Allah: We’ll retaliate killing of Fulani herders

Saleh Alhassan, the national secretary of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, says the group is ready to retaliate the killing of herders in any part of the country.

In an interview with The PUNCH, Alhassan alleged that the herders who are being attacked in some regions of the country are innocent.

He said the group will resist any attempt to force herders out of the south-west region.

“Nobody has the right (to evict herdsmen). If you say you are going to evict us, we will resist eviction. We have been surviving in harsh environments. If we do not resist, we will be wiped out of the planet. If you kill a herder, don’t go and sleep, we will revisit you, and it’s not because we hate your tribe. People attack herders, and in one way or the other, herders have found a way to retaliate,” Alhassan said.

“All those who travelled to the Benin Republic and others are coming back home. All those saying they will bar foreign herders from entering Nigeria are just playing to the gallery because if they are aware of the ECOWAS Protocols, they would know they cannot chase them away. That is why the position of the Bauchi State Governor is the true position. You have no right to evict anybody from any part of the country.

“Our number has increased recently because of the tension in Ghana and Benin Republics. The ones in Benin Republic have integrated with the Yoruba in such a way that they speak the language. They were initially living in the South-West, and they are coming back.

“They expected a reaction from us, maybe by way of attacking other ethnic nationalities. But that is wrong because the herders they are attacking are the innocent herders. Are the criminals representing anybody? They are doing their criminal enterprise. Our own pain is that the people who are supposed to know are pretending as if they don’t know.”

There has been growing tension over the activities of herders in the south-west. Some herders have been accused of kidnapping and killings in the region.
