Ogun: Father defiles 12-year-old daughter for 5yrs, says wife no more attractive

A 49-year-old man, Ubong Williams Akpan, has reportedly defiled his 12-year-old daughter in Ogun State, saying his wife was no more attractive to him.

Akpan was arrested in April 2 by the police following a report lodged at Itele Ota divisional headquarters by the victim.

The girl had reported at the police station that her father had been abusing her sexually since when she was seven years.

The Ogun State police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, told DAILY POST on Monday that the girl revealed that “this has been going on for the past five years, and when she can no longer bear it, she decided to complain to the police.”

Upon the report, the DPO of Itele-Ota division, CSP Monday Unoegbe, was said to have detailed his detectives to the scene where the suspect was promptly arrested.

“On interrogation, he confessed to the commission of the crime, claiming that his wife is appearing too old, and she is no longer looking attractive to him,” Oyeyemi said.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Edward Ajogun, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to family support unit of Ota area command for further investigation and prosecution, adding that the victim be taken to the hospital for treatment.

NAFDAC alerts Nigerians as US places sanitisers on watch list

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted Nigerians that the US has placed all alcohol-based hand sanitisers, manufactured in neighbouring Mexico, on its watch list.

The information is contained in a public alert signed by NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, and issued to newsmen on Monday.

The public alert with No: 001/2021 stated the US Food and Drug Agency (USFDA) had placed all alcohol-based hand sanitisers from Mexico on a countrywide import alert to help stop product falsification.

According to the alert, the products appear to be in violation of rules from entering the US and that until the agency is able to review the products’ safety they will be on the watch list.

“The USFDA has seen a sharp increase in hand sanitiser products from Mexico that were labelled to contain ethanol (also known as ethyl alcohol) but tested positive for methanol contamination over the course of the ongoing pandemic.

“Methanol or wood alcohol is a substance that can be toxic when absorbed through the skin and life-threatening when ingested.

“Methanol is not an acceptable ingredient in hand sanitiser or other drugs.

“Under the import alert, alcohol-based hand sanitisers from Mexico offered for import are subject to heightened FDA scrutiny and the shipment may be detained.

“This marks the first time the FDA has issued a countrywide import alert for any category of drug product,” the public alert said.

It also disclosed that substantial methanol exposure could result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death.

The alert said that all persons using these products on their hands were at risk of methanol poisoning.

It said that young children, who accidentally ingested these products and adolescents and adults who drank these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute, were most at risk.

The alert said that Methanol was not an acceptable ingredient for hand sanitisers and must not be used due to its toxicity

The alert warned consumers, who had been exposed to hand sanitiser containing methanol and were experiencing symptoms, should seek immediate treatment for potential reversal of toxic effects of methanol poisoning.

NAFDAC implored importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution and be vigilant to avoid the distribution, sale and use of methanol alcohol-based hand sanitisers.

It also warned those in possession of methanol alcohol-based hand sanitisers to discontinue the sale or use and to submit the stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.

NAFDAC encouraged the public to wash their hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

According to it, if soap and water are not readily available, the use of an alcohol-based hand sanitiser that contains at least 60 per cent ethanol or 70 per cent isopropanol should be used.

The agency said it was part of the measures put in place to mitigate the possible risk of spreading the COVID-19 virus by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

NAFDAC, however, encouraged health care professionals, consumers and patients to report adverse events related to the use of any hand sanitisers to its nearest office.

Bitcoin rally pushes crypto market value to $2trn

The cryptocurrency market capitalisation hit an all-time high of $2 trillion on Monday.

Reuters reports that the figure is according to data collected from CoinGecko and Blockfolio, as gains over the last several months attracted demand from both institutional and retail investors.

It said the crypto market cap was at $2.02 trillion at midday on Monday.

The surge in crypto market cap was led by Bitcoin, world’s most valuable cryptocurrency, which currently has a market capitalisation of $1.1 trillion — half of total global crypto market cap.

Analysts said as long as bitcoin stays above $53,000, it will be able to maintain its $1 trillion market cap.

Ethereum, the second biggest cryptocurrency in terms of market cap, was up 1.5% at $2,107, with a market cap of $244 billion. It hit a record high of $2,144.99 last Friday.

“While two trillion dollars in market cap is a sizable amount of value stored in the blockchain format, it is still less than 1% of the value that can be stored in that format, which means there is still much further to go in terms of both market cap and overall smart contract adoption,” said Sergey Nazarov, co-founder of Chainlink.

Recently, Bitcoin has gained acceptance among mainstream investors and companies, such as Tesla Inc, Mastercard Inc and BNY Mellon. This has caused the price of the virtual currency to increase rapidly in the market.

In March, Goldman Sachs, a multinational investment bank, said it will begin to offer investment opportunities in bitcoin and other digital assets to customers.

Join strike now or pay N5m fine: NARD threatens COVID-19 doctors

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has ordered doctors at the COVID-19 isolation centers to join the ongoing nationwide strike.

NARD threatened that failure to do so will attract a fine of N5m.

The body also warned that any branches ignoring the ongoing strike, which started on April 1, would not be able to hold any national position for the next two years.

The threat to impose a N5m fine on errant branches was contained in an internal memo sent out to members by the National Executive Council of the association, the Punch newspaper reported.

The internal memo read in part, “NARD affirms her commitment to the welfare of all members. All members of NARD will be levied the sum of N2, 500 as a strike levy for the smooth prosecution of the industrial action.

“Penalty for any centre that sabotages the industrial action will be payment of a fine of N5m and suspension from holding any NARD national officers committee positions for two years.”

NARD, an association of doctors undergoing residency training, had on April 1 begun a nationwide strike over the government’s failure to pay salaries of house officers and review the N5,000 hazard allowance of doctors.

Last-minute efforts on March 31 by the Federal Government to prevent the strike failed as the doctors shunned an agreement they signed with the government on the grounds that the proposals contained in it were not new.

Nigerian courts locked as judiciary workers begin indefinite strike

All courts across the country were locked up today as judiciary workers, under the aegis of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), commence an indefinite nationwide strike.

According to the national leadership of JUSUN, the strike action is to press home their demand for the financial autonomy of the judiciary.

The circular signed by JUSUN’s General Secretary, I. M. Adetola, directed all states and zonal heads of the union to comply with the strike.

The union had at its last National Executive Meeting on March 13, 2021, in Abuja, issued a 21-day ultimatum to the government to implement the financial autonomy of the judiciary with a threat that “failure of which JUSUN will have no other option but to resume the suspended national strike action.”

The strike action ought to have started on Monday April 5 but was moved to today April 6 due to the public holiday.

However, the ongoing strike is bound to add to the woes of many Nigerians whose access to healthcare has already been impaired by the ongoing strike of Nigerian doctors.
