UK Government announces £75 million in aid for refugees in Mediterranean

The Government has announced a new £75m fund to help tackle the migration crisis in the Mediterranean and reduce the number of people dying on treacherous sea crossings to Europe.
Theresa May will confirm the package when she travels to Brussels later this week for a European Council meeting.

The money will help provide emergency provisions for migrants stranded in Mediterranean countries and will also be used to tackle people trafficking and smuggling.

It will target at well-known routes that migrants from east Africa and west Africa use to try to reach Europe. Many of these pass through Libya, where they often pay traffickers significant sums of money to take them on dangerous and often deadly sea crossings in a desperate bid to reach Europe.

In 2016, 181,000 migrants arrived in Italy via this route – a figure that is expected to rise in 2017. In total, more than a million migrants arrived in Europe last year, many of them fleeing conflicts in the Middle East.

At least 5,000 migrants are thought to have died at sea last year, the vast majority of them in the Mediterranean.
Announcing the new funding, International Development Secretary Priti Patel said: “The UK has been at the forefront of responding to the migration crisis and our work to date has helped reduce total migrant numbers to Europe since 2015. But worryingly, more and more people are now using the incredibly dangerous Central Mediterranean route.

“This new UK support will provide desperately needed aid and protection to tens of thousands of the world’s most vulnerable. But critically it will also make clear the massive risks involved at every stage of this route and provide alternatives so those who change their minds can return home.

“As well as saving lives, this will provide vulnerable people with meaningful alternatives to the treacherous crossings into Europe. Building on our existing work to deal with the root causes of migration, this approach is about using our aid in a smart way, as part of a coordinated approach across government, to provide protection to people who need it and serve Britain’s national interests.”
The funds will be spent over the next three years and will help support migrants who want to return home, as well as providing supplies for those stuck in camps in southern Europe. -

Cops Suspect Slain Muslim Teen Nabra Hassanen Was Raped

Nabra Hassanen

Authorities suspect Nabra Hassanen may have been raped before she was murdered on Sunday, according to two sources with knowledge of the investigation.

The killing of Hassanen, a 17-year-old Muslim girl from the area, sent shockwaves through the country after a recent string of violent attacks on Muslims and racial minorities. Police say they are not investigating her death as a hate crime.

Hassanen’s body was found in a pond in Sterling, Virginia hours after Darwin Martinez Torres allegedly struck her with a baseball bat, took her away, and killed her. One source said police found a woman’s pair of underwear near Hassanen’s body, and investigators are awaiting test results from vaginal swabs.

When asked if Hassanen was raped, Fairfax County Police Department Lt. Col. Deputy Chief of Police for Administration Tom Ryan said at a Monday press conference: “There was an assault that occurred in Fairfax County and we had another assault that occurred in Loudoun County.”

Torres, 22, is in Fairfax County jail custody for the attack on Hassanen. Torres, a national of El Salvador, entered the United States illegally, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement spokesperson Carissa Cutrell told The Daily Beast. Cutrell said ICE has asked to take custody of Torres after he’s released from Fairfax County jail.

“It appears that the suspect became so enraged over this traffic argument that it escalated into deadly violence,” Fairfax County police spokeswoman Julie Parker said Monday. She added the case may be potentially prosecuted in Loudoun County “due to elements of the various crimes and where they occurred.”

According to a preliminary investigation, sources said, Hassanen and a group of about 15 Muslim teenagers were walking and riding bikes back to the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) mosque in Sterling after leaving a nearby fast food restaurant at about 3:40 a.m. on Sunday.

One boy in the group began arguing with Torres, the sources said, before one of the teens allegedly threw a drink at Torres’ vehicle.
Torres drove his vehicle onto the curb as the teens scattered, the sources said. Witnesses told police that Torres chased part of the group, including Hassanen, with a metal baseball bat into a nearby McDonalds parking lot.

Hassanen reportedly tripped over her abaya, which is when Torres caught up with her and struck her with the bat in the head, rendering her unconscious. Torres then allegedly dragged her body to his vehicle and drove to another location where police suspect he raped her.

A source close to the investigation said Hassanen may have regained consciousness and resisted during the sexual assault before Torres struck her again. Autopsy results showed that Hassanen suffered blunt force trauma to the upper body.
Hassanen’s body was later found in a pond.

Buhari Suffers Speech Impairment In London

President Muhammad Buhari, who left Nigeria 45 days ago to resume treatment for an undisclosed medical condition believed to be cancer, has developed speech difficulties, presidency sources said today.

Previously, Mr. Buhari was also said to be suffering memory lapses.  The latest revelation stems from recent attempts to return the President to Nigeria by members of a cabal managing his health and using it to deceive Nigerians.

Several of President Buhari’s aides who traveled with him are reportedly not in touch with him, reports say, while others were ordered to return to Nigeria, with nobody having any certainty about the prospects of Mr. Buhari’s date of return.

During his last trip Saharareporters revealed that his London doctors rejected the idea of his returning to work.  They asked that he remained in London for four months to see how best they could treat his illness.  Nonetheless, the cabal managing the president brought him back to enable him to undertake a number of acts including military postings and appointments that would have been impossible with an acting President on seat.

At that time, Buhari revealed he had been very ill and had received blood transfusion, and indicated he would soon return to the UK for further treatment.  During the period he was in Nigeria, he was rarely seen outside, but managed to attend a few Federal Executive Council meetings which he left as soon as the photo opportunities were done with. Two weeks after that return, his condition deteriorated and doctors had to be flown in from the UK to embark on treatment, but that phase lasted only for a few weeks.

The president then stopped attending the weekly FEC altogether, but to maintain the ruse that he was healthy, members of the cabal would shepherd him to the mosque on Fridays hoping to generate sentiments within the core Muslim north where a rumor had circulated that the president had been “poisoned”.

Buhari eventually left for the UK abruptly on the evening of May 7, shortly after meeting with some Chibok girls who had been released the previous day by Boko Haram. Although Buhari spoke at the event, his voice was barely audible, as he had lost a lot of weight, his condition reportedly complicated by Crohn’s Disease.

When the President was leaving for the airport, he shocked his aides when he asked if they were going to Sokoto, perhaps one of the first signs of his deteriorating memory.

It has now been learnt that President Buhari has not spoken to Acting President Yemi Osinbajo by telephone since his departure.  Only last week, the Acting President was asked to await a phone call from Mr. Buhari but when a call eventually came in, nothing coherent was heard from Mr. Buhari, despite the cabal having kept telling people of his “tremendous” improvement.

The cabal is also reportedly behind the rumors of a possible coup by some military officers a couple of weeks ago, as well as the recent quit notice by some Northern youths to the Igbos in that area, which they figured would make western countries view such an attempt with understanding if they thought the action would protect Nigeria as an indivisible entity.

Meanwhile, several top western diplomats including the Ambassadors of the US and the UK, are scheduled to meet with Acting President Osinbajo in the coming days. It is unclear if at that meeting the UK will brief Osinbajo regarding Buhari’s exact condition, but a State Department official told Saharareporters that they are more concerned about Nigeria’s indivisibility than the question of Buhari’s health.  A source at the British Embassy told this website they don’t think Buhari could continue to govern in the condition he is in London.

President Buhari left Nigeria flew into Luton airport on a Presidential jet with registration number 5N-FGT in the first week of May.  The jet was then flown on a 17-minute ride from Luton to London Stansted Airport, where it remains parked for over a month. - Sahara Reporters

Aston Villa offer contract to John Terry

Chelsea v Sunderland - Premier League

Aston Villa have made a firm contract offer to former England captain John Terry, according to a joint report from Matt Law and John Percy of the Telegraph.

The 36-year-old’s contract with Chelsea officially expires at the end of June, at which point, he becomes a free agent.

He’s allowed to speak to interested parties now and the Telegraph say that he has over ten offers on the table and one of those is from Aston Villa

Premier League sides Bournemouth, Swansea City and West Brom have apparently approached Terry, as have Villa’s local rivals Birmingham City
Furthermore, clubs in both China and the MLS are interested in signing him too, although it is understood that he’s likely to stay in the UK as he does not want to uproot his family.

Villa’s offer is apparently a very lucrative one, albeit it contains a lot of performances related bonuses and incentives that could, if he meets them all,  earn Terry overt £4million a year.

War leaves no winners, only rubble in S.Sudan oil town

What was once Bentiu, the gateway to South Sudan's oil fields, is now a cluster of bullet-riddled buildings and piles of scrap metal, its ghostly avenues abandoned.

Residents of the town have long since decamped to a well-ordered grid of mud dwellings ringed by sewage, where they live in wretched limbo after three years of war, too scared to leave.

Some 120,000 people living in the camp fear that if they leave their ethnicity would make them a target for government soldiers.
After years of fighting and atrocities, control by government forces has brought a fragile peace to Bentiu, but many of the town's displaced say they have nowhere to go and still rely on UN peacekeepers for protection.

"What needs to be done is immense, in terms of development, in terms of building institutions, building everything, basically," UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi told reporters after visiting Bentiu.

Outside the wire

After the civil war erupted in December 2013, forces loyal to President Salva Kiir fought with soldiers aligned with his former deputy Riek Machar for control of Bentiu.
Since then, tens of thousands of people have died across South Sudan and more than a third of the population has fled, turning towns like Bentiu into wastelands.

Bentiu was a hub for an oil industry which many hoped would pay for the country's development after its 2011 independence from Sudan.
But the only sign of that promise now is a handful of derelict gas stations, one of which houses the carcass of an armoured personnel carrier.

Conditions in the camp -- which is adjacent to a UN base, or protection of civilians (PoC) site -- aren't much better.

The site itself is a collection of mud-and-tarp houses arranged in blocks and bracketed by trenches of slimy green sewage that serve as playgrounds for children, and which occasionally swallow errant footballs.
Community leaders complain there is not enough to distract the young men from leaving to become thieves or fighters.

 'I'd lose my life easily'

Almost all of the camp's residents belong to Machar's Nuer ethnic group whereas the government soldiers outside the walls are seen as loyal to Kiir's Dinka ethnicity.

While they complain about the site's conditions, the displaced say they face death if they leave.

"It's a government-patrolled area. I'm a Nuer. Definitely, I'd lose my life easily," Bator Keah told AFP when asked what would happen if he left the site.
Sometimes leaving can't be avoided.
Women mount expeditions to find firewood for cooking. In the bush and alone, they risk being raped.

"If they see a young girl like me, they will quickly come," said Nyadak Puok who has been in the camp since 2014.
Aid agencies have given construction materials to people who can live safely in town, and the UN has sent peacekeepers out with women looking for firewood.

But for Bentiu to get back to normal, residents agree there needs to be peace.
That's something no aid agency can provide.
"I'm not the one who will bring peace to this country," Grandi told a group of community leaders in the camp.
"Peace to this country will be brought by its leaders."

Republican convicted of attacking reporter joins House

The newest member of Congress drew boos from some in his own Republican caucus on Wednesday as he called for withholding lawmakers' pay unless they approve a balanced budget.

Rep. Greg Gianforte of Montana, who was sworn in Wednesday, immediately made waves as he pledged to "drain the swamp" in his initial speech to Congress, an echo of President Donald Trump's campaign promise. The 56-year-old former software executive earned national notoriety last month after he body-slammed a reporter who had questioned him about the GOP health care bill.

In his speech Wednesday to a crowded House chamber, Gianforte also called for term limits and a ban on lobbying by former members of Congress. Boos from the Republican side were heard as Gianforte spoke about members' salaries, and an audible buzz grew louder as he concluded his brief remarks.

In an interview later, Gianforte said he was excited to serve in Congress and "humbled and honored."
While his arrest last month on assault charges made national and even international news, Gianforte said he was greeted "very warmly" by colleagues in both parties.

"I am really excited to be sworn in today and I'm ready to go to work," he said.
He declined to answer a question about his call for increased civility in politics in the wake of his conviction for assaulting the reporter the day before winning a special congressional election.

Gianforte, 56, won a May 25 special election to serve the remaining 18 months in the House term vacated by now-Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke. Gianforte, who already has filed for re-election, was sworn in by House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., called Gianforte "a do-er" and said, "We're happy to have him here."

With Gianforte in the House, Republicans have 239 members to 193 for Democrats. Winners of three elections will be sworn in at later dates.
Gianforte told The Associated Press last week that he is keenly aware he will carry with him the distinction of being the congressman who beat up the reporter.

"I can't erase it, but I did do everything in my power once the event was over to take responsibility," he said.

Members of Congress have an obligation to ratchet down the vitriol in politics, especially after last week's shooting of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise during a Republican congressional baseball practice, Gianforte said. The shooter had volunteered for Bernie Sanders' Democratic presidential campaign and expressed grievances online about President Donald Trump and Republicans.

"I believe that good things can come out of bad," Gianforte said. "It's important to make sure we reach out to all parties and hear their voice. I think the other parties have an obligation, as well, to be respectful and in that dialogue."

Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs said Gianforte body-slammed him to the ground and broke his glasses after Jacobs asked about the health care bill that had recently passed the Republican-controlled House. Audio taken by Jacobs recorded the sounds of a scuffle followed by Gianforte yelling, "Get the hell out of here!"

Gianforte was ordered to pay a fine, perform community service and take anger management training, but he received no jail time. He also avoided a civil lawsuit by writing a letter of apology to Jacobs and donating $50,000 to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

In a statement Wednesday, Jacobs said he welcomed Gianforte to Capitol Hill, "where I'm confident he will live up to his pledge to champion a free press and the First Amendment. In the courtroom last week, he openly offered to do an interview with me when he came to Washington and I look forward to taking him up on that in the coming days."

Sex Workers Take Over Secretariat As Their Business Boom

Image result for Sex Workers in lagos state

It appears that the economic situation in the country has really affected the women of easy virtues as most can no longer afford to pay for their rooms in brothels and are now forced to do their runs outside.

Many of them have now found solace at the Ejigbo Local Council Development secretariat along Ikotun/ Isolo road in Ejigbo.

According to P.M.EXPRESS undercover findings revealed that the booming business cut across all sizes and kind of women comprising married, single, students who are competing with professional sex workers and others.

It was also gathered that the business is conducted in collaboration with Council workers who give them access to the secretariat; to use every corners for short time sex and thereafter collect token fees.

This was yet to be confirmed or denied by the Council management.

The sex workers, it was gathered, do offer different kinds of services; the popular one is the one they bend down and the patrons penetrate from back.

However, it was learnt that such patrons must watch their pockets otherwise they will lose money and any other valuable in their pockets during the act.

Apart from the secretariat, tankers drivers who usually parked their trucks at the NNPC depot also convert their trucks to serve as makeshift accommodation for the business.

One of the patrons simply known as Ben, said that the business has been going on there for some years before it started booming recently.

He said it first started from the NNPC junction before it eventually spread to the local government secretariat and it appeared both the sex workers and their patrons were happy over the standard of the services rendered.

P.M.EXPRESS asked to know who patronises the ladies and Ben explained that the tanker drivers and their assistants constitute big market for sex workers because hundreds of tankers come to the NNPC depot daily and in most cases they stay till the following day.

He also explained that there were hotels within the axis but the cost of paying for chalets is on the high side and so many patrons resort to road side sex at reduced fee.

He said one can easily get their services by paying between N300 and N500 unless such patrons want ‘take-away’.

“The unique thing about this place is that you can see a fine and big woman you may not have the courage to talk to elsewhere, but you can have her here with N500,” Ben explained.

When our correspondent attempted to speak to some of the workers, they declined and said that was not what they came there to do.

However, one of the workers, Jane said the area is booming because of cost implication.

She said she was paying N30, 000 every month to a hotel owner where she rented half of a room space but could not cope with the rent due to low patronage.

She explained, “I make more money here because I spend less on space and there are reasonable customers.”

Efforts to speak with the council management was not successful as the PRO was said not to be in the office to respond.

Manchester United in the clear over Pogba transfer as Juventus face disciplinary proceedings

Manchester United have been cleared of any wrongdoing in the signing of Paul Pogba, but FIFA disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Juventus.

United splashed out a world-record £89million to lure the France international back to Old Trafford ahead of the 2016-17 campaign after four years at the Serie A champions.

Documents purportedly relating to the midfielder's move showed that his agent Mino Raiola stood to benefit to the tune of £41m off the deal and FIFA subsequently opened an investigation into the transfer.

World football's governing body has now made it clear United will not face potential punishment, but the agreement between Juventus and Raiola might be in breach of third-party ownership regulations.

"We can confirm that disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Juventus," a FIFA spokesperson told ESPN.

"We cannot comment further as proceedings are ongoing.
"We can confirm that no disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Manchester United."
Pogba, 24, scored nine goals in 51 appearances in all competitions for United this term, including the opener in the 2-0 Europa League final win over Ajax.

Boom's supersonic jets could cut your flight time in half within the next decade

After the demise of the Concorde supersonic jet in 2003, flight times have stayed relatively constant — but Blake Scholl, founder and CEO of Boom Technology, says air travel could get a speed boost in just a few years.

Scholl says passengers could be traveling on his company's supersonic planes within the next decade. "We're flying our first prototype end of next year. This is not something that's science fiction or decades off, this is something happening very quickly," Scholl said Monday on  's "Squawk Alley."

"We're looking at passengers in the early 2020s. That flight from San Francisco to Tokyo that takes 11 hours today shrinks to less than five and a half."

The Concorde never turned a profit, but Scholl says new development technology makes his company's jets faster and less costly for passengers.

"Concorde was designed half a century ago with slide rules and wind tunnels. Today we've got better aerodynamics, new materials, better engines, and all that adds up to a 75 percent reduction in operating cost," he said.

Scholl said 1,300 supersonic jets could be built over 10 years, according to third-party projections.

Japan trains 17,519 Nigerians in improved parboiling technology

.A Japanese government agency, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), says it has trained 17,519 Nigerians in improved parboiling technology so as to boost rice production in the country.
Mrs Salamatu Babatunzwang, the Communication Officer of JICA, said this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

She said that the training would be an added advantage to ongoing efforts to improve rice production in the country.
NAN recalls that JICA had earlier distributed improved parboiling technology equipment to 29 states across the count..

Babatunzwang said that the agency carried out the training, in collaboration with other partners, so as to upgrade the farmers’ skills in modern rice processing techniques.
She noted that project was executed in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

She said that the main goal of the project was to improve the capacity of small-scale rice processors to produce quality rice.
Babatunzwang disclosed that the initiative was developed under JICA’s technical cooperation project known as Rice Post Harvest Processing and Marketing Pilot Project and executed in Niger and Nasarawa states.

She noted that the initiative had begun to yield good results.
“This technology was introduced in the two pilot states of Niger and Nasarawa between 2011 and 2016 to teach local farmers ways of boosting the nutritional value of rice, while changing its texture,’’ she said.

Babatunzwang said that parboiled rice, also known as “converted rice’’, was the rice that had been partially boiled in the husk.
“The three basic steps of parboiling are soaking, steaming and drying; these steps also make rice easier to process by hand, while boosting its nutritional profile and changing its texture,’’ she said.

She added that the practice had recorded tremendous success in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Myanmar, Malaysia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Guinea, South Africa, Italy, Spain, Thailand, Switzerland, the U.S. and France. - The Nation
