Armed bandits attack bullion van in Delta, carting away N60million

There was pandemonium Friday in  parts of Asaba-the Delta State Capital after armed bandits  attacked a bullion van carting away over N60 million.
While the operation lasted many motorists abandoned their vehicles in the middle of the Benin-Asaba dual carriageway causing a traffic gridlock.
Guns boomed during the midday raid forcing many motorists and passers-by to scamper for safety around the ever-busy Koka junction end of the Benin-Onitsha expressway.

The Nation gathered that the bullion van belongs a to a first generation bank in Anambra State.
An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity said siren blaring bullion van was ambushed by a gang of robbers in a convoy of three vehicles including a grey coloured Sienna van.
It was learnt that the policemen escorting the bullion van engaged the robbers in a shootout, but were overpowered by the superior firepower of the robbers.
The Nation gathered that the police escort numbering eight fled the scene of the incident.
Delta Police image maker, DSP Andrew Aniamaka who confirmed the incident said “internal connivance” cannot be ruled out, lamenting that some commercial banks were still in the habit of conveying money without using bullet-proof vans despite repeated warnings by the Police Command.
He said the van was coming from Onitsha and headed towards Agbor, adding that the bullion van had made stops at Awka, and Onitsha in Anambra State.
His words, “I suspect internal connivance. This is in spite of the warning issued by the State Command for commercial banks to convey money following approved guidelines. The bullion van is not bullet proof; it is a configured bullion van”
Continuing, “Who informed the hoodlums that they were carrying cash through that route? It is quite unfortunate that banks are still using configured bullion vans without bullet proof, subjecting their personnel and escort officers to unnecessary risk.
“As we speak now, investigation is on, but I cannot tell you how much cash the bullion van was carrying before the attack. What I can assure is that the command will put necessary measures in place to bring whoever is involved directly or indirectly to justice.”
Another eyewitness said, “It was like a scene in one of those foreign movies where the actors engage in gun battle. The hoodlums came in with about three cars and intercepted the bullion van at the junction. They started shooting and innocent people took to their heels to avoid being victims of stray bullets.
Continuing, “Even vehicles on the expressway were making detour as a result of the attack. The officers attached to the van responded but I think the hoodlums had superior fire arms because the officers soon disappeared, giving the bandits an unfettered access to the cash stocked in the bullion van.”
Aniamaka also confirmed that no life was lost and no injury was sustained during the shootout. - The Nation

SHOCKING! FRSC officer engages woman in fist fight

SHOCKING! FRSC officer engages woman in fist fight
A video showing a male officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) fighting a woman has emerged.
The location of the video is unknown but both parties can be heard speaking Hausa.
After throwing punches at the woman, the officer unbuckled his belt and attempted to use it on her.
Towards the end of the video, the officer got into a scuffle with another female passenger — an elderly woman — who alighted from the vehicle to challenge him.

This is not the first time road safety officials will engage motorists in a fight.
In July, a video emerged where a female officer was seen struggling with a driver of a moving vehicle. - Cable Nigeria

Face of corruption !!! Former Enugu Chief Judge , Umezulike Loses Appeal Against Forfeiture Of His Account

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on Thursday, December 7, 2017, at the Court of Appeal, Enugu secured a landmark judgment when the appellate court dismissed the appeal by former Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice Innocent Umezulike challenging the interim forfeiture of the N50 Million in his Zenith Bank account.
The judgment read by Justice Ogunwumiju upheld the decision of the lower court to order the temporary forfeiture of the money.
Umezulike had appealed the order given by Justice A.M. Liman of the Federal High Court, Enugu in March 2017 following EFCC's application seeking the freezing, seizure and forfeiture of properties linked to him. The Commission claimed there was reasonable suspicion that the money was part of an alleged donation in which the former Chief Judge received from a litigant in his court.
The former Chief Judge was arraigned on July 14, 2017, on a one-count charge of the use of office to confer the corrupt and unfair advantage upon himself contrary to Section 19 of the Independent and Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offence Act (Laws of the Federation) 2000 .

164 Nigerians Return From Libyan "Slave Camps"

Image result for 164 Nigerians Return From Libyan "Slave Camps"
Another set of Nigerians numbering 164 (158 males and 6 females) returned to the country from Libya in the early hours of Friday, December 8th, 2017.
The returnees, who left the country through irregular travel routes and mostly through human trafficking voluntarily returned to the country and were received by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Nigerian Immigration Services (NIS) and International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The newest set of returnees landed at the Cargo Wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) aboard a Libyan registered aircraft at about 12.40am.
Some of the returnees recounted the horrible experiences they encountered while crossing the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea.
One of them, Keshi Emmanuel, who was going to Italy and had to pass through Libya said he thought Libya is the fastest means to cross to Europe but he was mistaken.
“I left just to make a change of life. I was hoping to pass Libya to Europe. I was going to Italy to do my welding work. I dropped out from school. I thought going through Libya is the only fast way I can make it. I am not fully happy to be back in Nigeria because I lost some money which I used in processing my travelling.” Emmanuel narrated.

Obi Emeka Reuben, who left the shores of the country because he had no one to sponsor him to school revealed how he escaped death on the Mediterranean Sea and had to spend six months in a Libyan prison.
“I left Nigeria because I had no sponsor to go back to school after my National Diploma (ND). My mother, who could have helped me died due to a stomach problem. I had no other means and I decided to use the little money I saved to travel through the land. I left with no place in mind; I was looking at Germany or Italy to do any work I see.”
“There is plenty of stress and disaster while travelling to Libya. My boat capsized and many people were carried away by water. I was one of the people rescued by local fishermen and was later arrested. I was in prison for six months in Libya before being taken to a deportation camp.”
Joseph Famakin, Ikeja Zonal commander of NAPTIP asserted that many Nigerians who are leaving the country in search of opportunities are chasing a mirage adding that people die on a daily basis while crossing the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea as a result of irregular migration. He also advised Nigerians to make use of legal and regular migrations when leaving the country.
“These people (164 returnees) left Nigeria believing that it is greener over there and a lot of them were deceived to embark on a journey to an unknown world. This journey is not one that is advisable for any human being because passing through the Sahara Desert and arriving at Libya, there are so many gangs waiting to make life uncomfortable for the people.”
“In our effort to prevent and rescue Nigerians, who have embarked on this journey, we partner with IOM and other foreign bodies to bring them back home. I would advise Nigerians not to embark on a journey to a country where you have no document and free will. Our people should get the normal and appropriate documents whenever they want to travel out.” Mr. Famakin said
Mr. Yakubu Suleiman, South West Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, who came to receive the returnees on behalf of the Director General of NEMA, Mustapha Maihaja, in his words, also beseeched the returnees to remain in Nigeria and maximally utilize their stay in the country.
He said, “These people travelled to Libya, illegally and they are being returned back to their country. They would be rehabilitated and engaged in entrepreneurship activities. We 'll ensure that they don’t go back to where they came from and I am advising them to remain in this country and let us change it together. Those that are lucky to come back have a second chance and they should use it maximally.”
The returnees were profiled upon return by different agencies that came to receive them and transported to different shelters where they would be rehabilitated before being allowed to return to their different homes.

Nollywood star, Joke Silva reveals she was adopted from foster home

Veteran Nollywood actress, Joke Silva-Jacobs, has revealed she was an adopted child of the Silva Family.

According to the screen goddess, she was adopted decades ago from a foster home run by the Red Cross in Lagos.
Joke Silva, now 56, made this family secret known yesterday in Lagos at the first Annual Conference of Heritage Adoption Support and Advocacy Group (HASAAG).
The beautiful and talented actress’ adopted parents were the late Chief E.A Silva, a reputable lawyer, the then Babajiro of Lagos and his wife late Dr Abimbola Silva a pioneering female doctor, who died in July 2015.
Joke narrated: “Everybody would be calling me whenever my adopted mum (Dr. Silva) came with cakes and a lot of things during her visit. I went to YWCA Nursery, which was not too far from the Silva’s home in Yaba. I also have memories of moving in with them when they moved to Glover Road in Ikoyi.
“I remember reading newspapers to my Dad in our sitting room and pronouncing Brig-General Aguyi Ironsi, the then Nigeria Head Of State, Agolo Iresi! My father could not stop laughing at my hilarious interpretation of the newspaper.
“Also I remember making them proud, when performing at St. Saviour School. My parents would be standing and were congratulated by other parent too for my acting skills. My parents were so excited that this child was incredibly talented.
“I have memories of going to Holy Child College Lagos because my parents insisted on me going to Holy Child because that is where Julie Coker, Pearce Olusola and Ibidun Allison went and they believed with all my performing talent skills, that is the kind of school I should go to too.
“I remembered going out with my cousin and we met a big cousin She introduced me as ‘my cousin’s daughter and this is Dr Silva’s daughter.’ Then, the older cousin was like, ‘Dr. Silva ke? Se Doctor Silva bimo ni? (meaning does Dr. Silva have a child?) . Did Dr Silva ever has a child?’
“I was so confused and when I got home I told my mum, ‘I met this lady that says you never had a child.’ My mum froze and she said, ‘don’t mind them, they are used to rubbish talk.’
“But I got to know years later when I wanted to travel and was looking for my passport where my mum kept it. Since she was not around, I opened the box in her absence and I saw my adoption papers. I never discussed it with my mum because I felt it was something that would hurt her, that was why, it was kept secret from me.”
“Even in their wills, I was well protected. My Daddy being a lawyer said in his will that all his children, both adopted and biological, should be treated equally. I was not stressed in anyway. We were all well taken care of till my mum died at the age of 89. At 56, I still miss her but I know she has definitely gone back to her father.
“On her sick bed I always sang her favourite tunes, she would be imputing the melodious tunes and she died singing to her Lord. She had prepared her family before my coming into her life because I had an incredible big Silva family.
“I have a very big family I am the first daughter, I carried the responsibility of a first daughter. Everybody in my family cannot take any decision until sister Joke has come. I can’t call my parents adopted parents. They are my parents” - Daily Post

Failed Presidency !!! Buhari’s cabinet has failed, says Agbakoba

Buhari’s cabinet has failed, says Agbakoba

President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet has failed and should be disbanded, a leader of the National Intervention Movement (NIM) Dr Olisa Agbakoba (SAN) said Thursday.
The former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President accused President of Buhari of “sleeping on the job”, urging him to take it more “seriously”.
Agbakoba, at a briefing in Lagos on NIM’s objectives, said the movement aims to mobilise Nigerians to hold government accountable at all levels.

“We want government to work for Nigerians. Presently, it does not. President Buhari needs to take his job seriously. He is sleeping on the job. He needs to sack his entire cabinet because they have failed.
“Why for instance has nobody been fired for Mainagate? What is government’s plan for unemployment? Seventy per cent of our young people are unemployed. It is alarming! What is the Federal Government’s plan for power?
“Should the privatisation process be reversed? Why is our bidding and procurement processes failing? Why is government still appropriating billions of naira for turnaround maintenance of dead refineries?,” Agbakoba said.
According to him, governors must deploy resources efficiently at the state level.
He cited instances of Lagos State Governor Akinwumi Ambode who he said “is fixing federal roads when Lagos State roads are deplorable;” and Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha who Agbakoba said “is erecting statues of all kinds of people when Imo State owes pensioners.”
He said Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose “is making Christmas clothes for children but has not paid Ekiti workers”; adding that his Rivers State counterpart Nyesom Wike “is using state money to buy SUVS for members of the National Assembly”.
“Is it not a scandal that oil producing states like Rivers, Bayelsa, Abia, Delta etc owe salaries?” Agbokoba said.
The Senior Advocate said NIM’s mission “in the long run” is to wrest power from the political elite.
“We believe strongly that the way forward is for civil society (including the media) to wrest power from this ruling political elite to achieve a new system that is inclusive and works for all and not a few,” Agbakoba said.
To him, more is expected of the judiciary. He said: “How come corruption cases involving politicians never terminate in our courts? Governors accused of corruption after office get judicial immunity? Politicians charged with corruption present themselves for public office in every election circle. Some are senators making laws for the country.”
According to Agbakoba, it was unfortunate that a country that produces crude oil cannot refine it. He said queues were returning due to fuel scarcity when “dead” refineries ought to have been “sold a long time ago”.
“We need to ask simple questions. If APC promised us ABCD, how many have they fulfilled? How many ministers are actually competent to deliver on their ministries? For instance, the good friend of mine Dr. Kayode Fayemi has no competence to be Minister of Mines because that’s not his background.
“What is the competence of another good friend, a nice chap and a successful man, Udo Udoma (SAN), to be the Minister of Budget when he is a lawyer? So, the President should be called upon to dismantle his cabinet and pick the right people because the best guys are not there.
“The President needs to either say: ‘I’m tired’ or get rid of people who have no competence. Another good friend Geoffrey Onyeama is an intellectual property lawyer. He has no competence to be a foreign minister, but he’s there. The Federal Cabinet lacks competence and that’s what’s causing our problem.”
The movement, Agbakoba said, was initiated by a group of 90 Nigerians on November 29 as a non-political organisation to “uplift Nigerians”, adding that members are “committed to make a difference in our country”.
Agbakoba said NIM intends to grow by inspiring and supporting people to start small groups across the country and would accommodate anyone concerned about the failures of both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
“We want a functioning democracy where political office holders are accountable to the people, public institutions are strong and there is the rule of law,” he said.
According to him, the APC and PDP lack ideologies, which he said was why Nigerians “are in a sorry situation.”
“We live a failed state, and unless we articulate the elements of this failure, we’ll continue to fail.  Governor Ambode says he runs the fourth or fifth largest economy in Africa. But we’re all in Lagos. This is a completely broken city and in the index of the harshest cities to live in the world, it’s third from last. We need to look at what the states are doing.
“Look at the joker in Imo – Ministry of Happiness. And we’re there, saying nothing, and this people are screwing us. How come we have about 11 governors facing trial sitting as Senators and EFCC says they’re doing a fantastic job? And they transfer it to the judiciary, which I think also has a part of the blame.
“This is a government that says: ‘We’re on top of corruption’. But the NNPC is a cesspit of corruption. And Nigerians don’t know that the President cannot be minister of Petroleum Resources!
“We said to ourselves: When will this rut stop? Everybody is in his house grumbling – no jobs, no money, no healthcare. We spoke among ourselves that what is needed is a coherent political movement.
“Look at what #EndSars achieved. It shows you the power the people have. We’re going to use social media to mobilise Nigerians. We want Nigerians to claim ownership of the movement,” Agbakoba said. - The Nation
