UK begins mass COVID-19 vaccination programme

Britain on Tuesday hailed a turning point in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, as it begins the biggest vaccination programme in the country’s history with a new Covid-19 jab.

The first patients in line on what has been dubbed “V-Day” — the over-80s, care home workers and at-risk frontline health and social care staff — will roll up their sleeves for an initial dose from early morning.

They will then require a second jab in 21 days’ time.

Last week Britain became the first country to approve the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, raising hopes of a breakthrough in the pandemic, which has killed more than 1.5 million worldwide.

Britain has been one of the worst-affected countries in the world, with more than 61,000 deaths in the outbreak from 1.6 million cases.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who spent days in intensive care with Covid-19 earlier this year, called it a “huge step forward in the UK’s fight against coronavirus”.

UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock, who has offered to have the jab on live television to allay public fears, said the roll-out was a “key moment” that would protect the most vulnerable.

The head of the state-run National Health Service in England, Simon Stevens, said it was a “decisive turning point” against the “greatest health challenge” since the NHS was founded in 1948.

Regulatory approval for the vaccine was given last Wednesday, sparking a race against time to prepare scores of vaccination centres across the country.

The UK has ordered 40 million doses of the jab — enough to vaccinate 20 million people — with 800,000 in the first batch.

Up to four million doses are expected by the end of December.

– Queen could lead way –

The mass vaccination drive is a coordinated response by all four nations of the UK — England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland — which normally set their own health policies.

The public has been largely favourable to the rapid approval of the vaccine, but ministers and health professionals are aware they still need to combat mistrust.

The Independent Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency maintains that no corners were cut and its assessment and approval procedures met stringent international norms.

NHS England said thousands had already been given the jab during trials with no serious side effects.

Nevertheless, it has been reported Queen Elizabeth II, who at 94 is among those first in the line for the vaccination because of her age, could front a public awareness campaign urging compliance.

The government said it will hand out vaccine cards to remind people to get the booster after three weeks, but insisted it was not introducing immunity certificates.

Champions League: How Bruno Fernandes is forcing Pogba out of Man Utd

Paul Pogba wants to leave Manchester United, because he is unhappy with his midfield role under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the UK Telegraph reports.

On Monday, his agent Mino Raiola, gave a wide-ranging interview, in which he revealed Pogba’s time at the club was “over”.

Although the France midfielder has 18 months left on his contract, Raiola says it would be best for him to be sold next year.

The 27-year-old’s desire to leave has always been attributed to the fact that he was keen to return to Juventus or join ‘dream’ club, Real Madrid.

But it is now believed Pogba’s unhappiness is down to Solskjaer’s tactics.

Pogba was given a free role in an advanced midfield position when Solksjaer took charge and he finished as United’s top scorer in the 18/19 campaign.

However, a long-term ankle injury saw United buy Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon and the Portugal playmaker has since taken over the reins as United’s orchestrator-in-chief.

Pogba has struggled for game time, but when picked he’s been utilized in a midfield two, which requires more defensive duties than he would like.

US blacklists Nigeria over ‘religious freedom violations’

The United States has blacklisted Nigeria for “engaging (in) systematic, ongoing, egregious religious freedom violations”.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the measure via Twitter on Monday, saying the country will continue to act when “religious freedom is attacked.”

Also added to the list of the annual designations are China, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Eritrea.

Pompeo did not state why Nigeria was blacklisted but said “no country or entity should be allowed to persecute people with impunity because of their beliefs”.

“Today the U.S. designates Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, Nigeria, the DPRK, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan as countries of concern under the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 for engaging systematic, ongoing, egregious religious freedom violations,” he tweeted.

“The U.S. is unwavering in its commitment to religious freedom. No country or entity should be allowed to persecute people with impunity because of their beliefs. These annual designations show that when religious freedom is attacked, we will act.

“The U.S. is sanctioning the senior leadership of China’s National People’s Congress in connection with developing, adopting, and implementing the National Security Law. We will hold Beijing accountable for destroying Hong Kong’s autonomy. #StandWithHongKong #FightForFreedom.”

The international religious freedom report describes the status of religious freedom in every country and covers government policies violating religious belief and practices of groups, religious denominations and individuals.

In its 2019 country report on human rights practices, the US had expressed concerns over the high rate of religious intolerance in various parts of the country following acts often perpetuated by state actors.

WHAT DOES BEING DESIGNATED A COUNTRY OF PARTICULAR CONCERN MEAN?

The US Department of State stated that such designation could attract economic measures against such country that has “engaged in or tolerated particularly severe violations of religious freedom.”

It said congress is first notified when a country is blacklisted as a result of violations of religious freedom.

“And where non-economic policy options designed to bring about cessation of the particularly severe violations of religious freedom have reasonably been exhausted, an economic measure generally must be imposed,” it said.

Lagos seeks to review chieftaincy law, says 93 monarchs big burden

Lagos is seeking to tweak its chieftaincy law as it is concerned over the large number of monarchs in the state.

The state also has 10 vacant stools to fill.

““The law really needs to be upgraded,” said Folami Lukman, the director of chieftaincy, Lagos State Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs.

“They should help us fast-track this review. Everybody wants to become Oba, chief. Even those with red blood, that are not blueblood, they want to become obas. Let us do something and help our laws and help save the state.

“The state’s size is not increasing. As of today, we have 93 obas on ground; about 10 stools that need to be occupied.”

Lukman spoke Monday at a stakeholders’ meeting on the Review of the Obas and Chiefs of Lagos State Law, 2015.

Nigeria is in a war zone, says Prof. Soyinka

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka has said Nigeria is not only at war, but also is in in a war zone.

Soyinka made this statement  today against the backdrop of large-scale insecurity in the country while  launching  his latest novel, Chronicles Of The Happiest People On Earth, a book he published at 86.

“I think we are not merely at war, we are in a war zone, ” the literary icon maintained.

The Nobel Laureate also said there is a high level of insecurity in the country so much so that people now sleep with one eye open and the other closed, and cautioned that unless our leaders allow a decentralization of governance and accept that they have failed, we might have a new set of conflagration along different lines unlike before.

“The term, one eye open and one eye close has become a common parlance everywhere” he said.

Asked how long it took him to write the novel, the Nobel Laureate said it took him forever, adding that writing the book was a problem he dealt with for many years. And he had to escape twice, first to Senegal and then to Ghana before he could concentrate on the book.  And he actually spent about two years to write it.

“I just could not concentrate sufficiently within these borders,” he maintained.

Asked whether he feels things have changed since independence, the literary icon said nothing has really changed, adding that the more things seem to be changing, the more they remain the same.

Soyinka also decried the dependence of Nigerians on religion, adding that it reduces our humanity. He also said it is only when Nigerians learn to reduce their total dependence on religion that that is the only way they can habit with it. However the Nobel Laureate said believing in something that enlarges one’s humanity.

Asked again what his mood was, whether it was pessimistic or optimistic, the Nobel Laureate succinctly said: Happiness, adding that he takes everyday as it comes.

It was an evening of music spiced with readings of excerpts from the book, Chronicles Of The Happiest People On Earth. Guests who read excerpts from the book alongside the author included Somtom Asibelibua, who read in English, French and Spanish as well as Richard Move Damijo.

Guests in attendance included the Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, Kunle Ajibade, Executive Editor, THENEWS magazine ChiefNewton Jibunoh and Professor Ebun Clark.

EGBE KEGBE !!! Oshiomhole: If I get another chance to chair APC, I’ll reject it

Adams Oshiomhole, former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says if given a second chance, he will not lead the ruling party .

In a statement on Monday, Oshiomhole said he remains proud of the achievements of the party’s national working committee (NWC) under his leadership.

Oshiomhole, who said he holds no grudge against anyone who contributed to his removal, added that he has instructed his lawyers to withdraw the suit challenging his suspension.

“I instructed my lawyers to withdraw the suits challenging my purported suspension from office by the proxies  of those bent on removing me as chairman,” the statement read.

“It is, therefore, the height of mischief  to insinuate, as it is being done in some quarters, that I would publicly accept the decision and later surreptitiously seek to contest it in court.

“That chapter of my political life is closed. Even if another NEC decision or a court order reverses the dissolution, with utmost humility I will decline to return as APC chairman.

“I am proud of the accomplishments of the NWC under my leadership and I am grateful to the principled 18 members who worked as a  team committed to the cause of the party. Above all, I bear no grudges against any one for the manner of my removal.”

Oshiomhole expressed gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari for supporting his administration as APC chairman.

A federal capital territory (FCT) high court suspended Oshiomhole on March 5, four months after the former chairman was suspended by his state chapter of the party.

On June 25, Oshiomhole-led national working committee was dissolved following a leadership tussle.

A caretaker committee chaired by Mai Mala Buni, Yobe governor and former national secretary, was set up in place of the dissolved NWC.

Like Uber and Bolt, Lagos yellow taxi drivers adopt ride-hailing app

Speed up, Uber and Bolt — otherwise Lagos yellow taxi drivers will soon overtake you.

Univasa Nigeria Limited, an information technology company, on Monday launched a ride-hailing platform for the Lagos yellow taxi drivers.

“Baba Dey Online”, a ride-hailing feature on its Univasa user application, is downloadable on IOS and Google PlayStore.

The application has same features as those of Uber and Bolt, other ride-hailing platforms.

The event attended by the leadership and members of the Lagos State Taxi Drivers and Cab Operators Association (LSTDCOA) was held at its headquarters in Oshodi.

Speaking at the event, Omolekan Taiwo, president of LSTDCOA, said the partnership with Univasa shows that the association is willing to embrace technology in its operation across 283 parks and 16 branches in the state.

He decried the discrimination against yellow taxis particularly regarding access to some routes and estates in Lagos.

Taiwo urged the state government to allow drivers using the Univasa application an equal ground to access all roads and estates as practiced by other ride-hailing drivers.

“Since I emerged, the development of this association has been my priority. We have been in this business for a long time, we won’t allow newcomers in this line to take credit for the profession we are known for. Our mission is to improve on our practices and call back all members who left to return back to this job and sustain it,” he said.

“Univasa taxi apps came onboard at the right time, since technology is now the ultimate, we are ready to embrace univasa taxi apps for all our drivers and the general public for usage, we are going to bring back all our members that have left the association due to lack of technologies based apps into our folds.

“However, I want to use this medium to appeal to the Lagos state government through the ministry of transportation to give all the taxi apps users a level playing grounds by allowing the yellow taxi access into all estates in Lagos state.”

In his remark, Ben Adeniyi, chief executive officer of Univasa, said the company developed the platform as a result of “hunger for innovation and technology”.

He said the company is making efforts to support drivers with mobile devices and modern taxi vehicles through some partnership deals.

“Today, we are officially launching BabaDeyOnline for users to download on IOS and Google PlayStore. This innovation will ease the stress of those who visit the taxi parks to order rides. We are leveraging on the perspective of the public to name this #BabaDeyOnline,” he said.

“With technology like Univasa app, you can book Lagos Taxi from the comfort of your home.”

Adeniyi said efforts are ongoing to end discrimination against taxi drivers in the area of accessing major areas such as the local and international airports.

He said the company will invest in training taxi drivers to adapt to the new system, adding that the platform will provide both online and offline services to users.

The company’s CEO added that among other, the application has a feedback rating system that allows users react to services provided by taxi drivers.

No fewer than two women have died when a vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a swampy ditch in Ogun State.

DAILY POST reports that the incident occurred at 11:20pm on Monday at Fidiwo axis of Lagos-Ibadan highway, inbound Lagos.

It was gathered that the vehicle, a Sharon space bus with registration number, YEE 202XA, was on high speed, causing the driver to lose control.

Passengers lament, attack Buhari govt as transport increases in Abuja

Passengers in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, are calling out the government of President Muhammadu Buhari over the increasing cost of transportation in the nation’s capital.

According to the passengers, accessing their work and business places have become more challenging than ever.

Recall that the Federal Government recently increased the electricity tariff and pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, from N160 per litre to N170 within a space of one week.

This development has led to an outcry from passengers in the federal capital as they urge the government to save Nigerians.

DAILY POST staff who visited motor parks in Abuja over the weekend observed most of the passengers lamenting the increase in transport fare as well as an increase in the cost of food items.

Others rightly noted that the rise in the prices of food items in the market could not be unconnected with the increase in the pump price of petrol.

One Chidera Obiamaka told DAILY POST that the price of transport has doubled since the hike in fuel price.

According to him, a taxi to Lugbe from Berger which was formerly N100 is now N200.

“We are tired and frustrated with this government. How else do we describe a government that the NLC and other labour groups cannot protest against?

“Buhari’s government is unkind. How do we survive? It will only get worse. The transport fare is too high, I usually take a cab from Lugbe to Berger for N100, but now it’s N200.

“The drivers keep saying the increment is due to fuel price; the government needs to do something about this. It is tough to live in Nigeria now.”

Also, another passenger identified as Damola Ogunsanya who was at Area 1 said the regular cab of N200 to Kubwa before the increase in fuel price is now N300.

He said: “Before the increase in fuel price, my transport to and fro my office was N600, but now it is N800.

“This is so unfair to us, Buhari should pity us. A government that has come only but to hurt the people is of the devil. People are dying. Go to the market with the whole of your salary you can’t buy anything. ”

DAILY POST also observed that in other axes like Berger to Jabi garage, the fare increased by N50.

With festivities approaching, there is the possibility that transport fares to various locations will also be higher, especially as Nigerian prepare to enjoy the holidays with families.

“Well, I laboured hard in my little way to support Buhari’s second term but sincerely, I regret it. This is an anti-people government with policies that can only kill people trying to survive in a harsh country.

“Fuel, electricity, taxes, where do we run to? This government should go,” another passenger simply identified as Abdul said.

Report: Nigeria’s smartphone shipments increased to 3m units in Q3 2020

Latest figure by the International Data Corporation (IDC), a global provider of market intelligence focused on information technology (IT), shows that smartphone shipments into Nigeria increased 13.7 percent quarter on quarter (QoQ) in Q3 2020 to almost 3 million units.

According to the firm’s Quarterly Global Mobile Phone Tracker, Nigeria’s smartphone market remained healthy in the third quarter as vendors shifted their model portfolios to entry-level and mid-range devices.

“The average street prices of smartphones declined marginally (0.3 percent) as the dollar exchange rate remained high. The increase in Value Added Tax by 2.5 percentage points also had a negative impact on prices,” the report read.

“With the relaxation of COVID-19 measures, the majority of consumers returned to the physical retail channel in Q3 2020, leading to a 21.5 percent QoQ increase in retail sales.

Transsion (Tecno, Itel, and Infinix) brands dominated smartphone shipments in Q3 2020 with a combined 76.4 percent share. Samsung placed second with 7.0 percent share and Xiaomi placed third with 5.3 percent leading to a 21.5 percent QoQ increase in retail sales.

In Q3 2020, feature phone shipments increased 21.2 percent QoQ to account for 56 percent of the country’s overall mobile phone market, with major players being Tecno with 49.7 percent share, Itel with 34.8 percent, and Nokia with 8.2 percent.

George Mbuthia, a research analyst at IDC, said: In light of the economic hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, vendors continued to ship more affordable devices priced below $200 as they sought to address demand for cheaper models and penetrate consumer segments with lower purchasing power.”

“This strategy of offering more devices in the entry-level and mid-range price bands (<$200) ensured a faster market recovery from the weak performance seen in Q2 2020, which was heavily impacted by COVID-19.”

On his part, Ramazan Yavuz, a senior research manager at IDC, said: “IDC expects Nigeria’s overall mobile phone market to grow 3.1percent QoQ in Q4 2020, with feature phone shipments increasing by 1.9 percent and smartphone shipments growing by 4.7 percent. Promotions from the end of November through the festive month of December will support the market’s growth in Q4 2020.”

“COVID-19 will continue to pose a threat to the overall economy, in particular, to mobile phone markets. However, smartphone shipments will remain resilient in 2021, with customers moving from feature phones to smartphones and data usage increasing in the medium term.”

Flood kills 68 people across Nigeria in 2019 — NEMA

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said that no fewer than 129,000 persons were affected, while 68 persons were killed by flooding in different parts of the country this year.

Retired AVM Muhammadu Muhammed, the Director-General of the agency, disclosed this at the 2020 Flood After Action Review Technical Meeting organised for stakeholders on Monday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting had in attendance heads of state emergency management agencies, dam managers, heads of zonal, territorial and operational offices of NEMA, among other stakeholders

Mohammed said the flooding, which had devastating impacts on lives, properties and farmlands, affected 320 local government areas in 35 states including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“The devastating impact of the 2020 flooding killed 68 people, affected 35 states including FCT, 320 LGAs and over 129,000 people.

“It led to loss of lives, it destroyed houses and washed away farmlands across the country, thereby having negative impact on food security,” he said.

According to him, the after action review meeting became necessary in order to improve performances by reflecting on activities, avoiding past mistakes and replicating successes.

He added that the agency was determined to support state emergency management agencies to build their capacities and enhance their response capabilities to disasters.

The DG also appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari, the National Assembly, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development for giving the agency adequate supports.

He also appreciated the Nigerian Armed Forces for their technical and logistical supports in terms of preparedness, mitigation and response to floods in the affected areas.

Alhaji Sani Dododo, Chairman, Kebbi State Emergency Management Agency, who spoke on behalf of the state agencies, called on his colleagues to give NEMA more support to save guard lives and property.

He added that each state should take note of the various weather seasons and possible disasters associated with them to work towards mitigating their effects.

Mr Clement Nze, Director-General, Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), added that the impact of the floods on farmlands had greatly threatened food security in the country.

He, however, assured of his agency’s readiness to work closely with NEMA to promote inter-agency collaboration to avert flood disasters in the country.

Arewa Forum: Politics is the only industry in the north

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) says northern children have turned to violence as a means of livelihood.

Speaking at a meeting with Babagana Zulum, Borno governor, Audu Ogbeh, ACF chairman, said the security situation in the north is “depressing”.

Ogbeh led a delegation to Maiduguri to meet with the governor and commiserate with him over the Zabarmari killings.

Over 40 farmers were killed when Boko Haram insurgents attacked the village in Jere local government area weeks ago.

The former minister said the tragedy of the north is that politics is the only industry in the region, adding that politics has “never grown any society”.

“We are depressed, very depressed. And anyone of us, of our age, who was not depressed, he was not well-born. Because we have nothing to leave behind for our children, and violence will not sustain us,” a statement on Monday quoted Ogbeh as saying.

“The tragedy of the north today is that the only industry left is politics, and politics alone has never grown any society.

“We have to re-grow Borno state, we have to re-grow the north, we have to re-grow Nigeria. We have no industries, agriculture has declined and our own children have now turned to violence as a means of livelihood.

“Your Excellency, in ACF we have decided that we will not talk too much politics, we decided to focus on something else, we are going to start a program of developing small-scale agro-industries across the north.”

On his part, Zulum thanked the forum for commiserating with him and the state over the killings.

The governor asked the federal government to find lasting solutions to the insurgency in the north-east.

Lampard names four Premier League rivals that could win title

Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard, has played down Jurgen Klopp’s claim that they are the favourites to win the Premier League this season.

Klopp heaped praise on the Blues last week, saying they “look like favourites” as they have the “biggest squad and great players”.

Lampard’s men sit in third place behind Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool on the table.

He has now said that the Reds, Spurs, Manchester City and Manchester United are in the frame to win the title.

“Liverpool and Manchester City seem to be pretty much everyone’s favourites and rightly so with the form they have had over the past three or four years and how they have built up their squads.

“Even with injuries, you look at the squad Liverpool put out last night with players missing and it’s a very good side. Tottenham and Manchester United are in the frame too,” Lampard told Sky Sports.

191,000 job applicants write exams to fill 9,460 vacancies

About 191,000 job applicants are being tested today by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to fill 9,460 vacancies in the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Secretary of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board, Yakmut Alhassan Saleh, said the computer-based exam is taking place simultaneously in 126 centres across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“All over the country, we have almost 190,000 candidates out of which 113,000 are Civil Defence, and 78,000 for Immigration.

The advert inviting applications for the CBT

“The examination is broken into three phases; we have the one for graduates and HND, NCE and OND and the third one for secondary school (leavers).''

The examination, according to him, was being conducted by JAMB to ensure transparency and avoid rancour and confusion that trailed a similar exercise a few years ago.

“We need to go through a transparent method of a recruitment exercise and it has to start from the word go”, Yakmut said.

“This is just one component of the exercise, after this, we go into physical and medical as well as psychometric exercise.”

He said the Interior ministry collaborated with JAMB to ensure that every candidate is given a fair opportunity to prove that he has the merit and requirement that we need.
