Justice I. M Sani of the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State has convicted and sentenced Uchenna Samuel Nwosu (a.ka. Jackson Mendez) to six months imprisonment for internet fraud, impersonation and obtaining the sum of $500 from an American, Carmen Alvarez, under false pretence.
Nwosu was arraigned by the Economic And Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Port Harcourt’s Zonal Office on April 11, 2019 on three-count charges bordering on internet fraud, impersonation and obtaining under false pretences contrary to Section 6 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under section 1(3) of the same Act.

Nwosu originally pleaded “not guilty” to the charges but later changed his plea to “guilty”.
Based on his changed plea, Prosecuting counsel, Barrister Samuel Chime prayed the court to convict him accordingly.
Justice Sani convicted and sentenced him to six months imprisonment on each of the three – count charges. The sentence however runs concurrently. The court also ordered Nwosu to restitute the $500 he collected from his victim. Also, the court ruled that a laptop, Lenovo T410, recovered from him should be forfeited to the Federal Government.
Nwosu’s journey to prison began when he was arrested along Liberty Drive, Woji, Port Harcourt, for his involvement in online dating scam.

OPL 245: Jonathan, Diezani conspired to receive bribe, FG tells London court

The federal government has accused former President Goodluck Jonathan and Diezani Alison-Madueke, his former minister of petroleum resources, of accepting bribes for the controversial OPL 245 deal.
These claims were included in documents filed at a London court by lawyers representing the federal government concerning payments made to acquire the licence in 2011.
In the court case filed against Shell and Eni, the federal government said Jonathan and Alison-Madueke broke the law for making a secret profit and sidelining the government from its true share of the deal.
On April 9, 1998, the federal military government awarded OPL 245 to Malabu Oil and Gas Ltd, which was said to be owned mainly by Mohammed Abacha, son of the Sani Abacha, and Etete, who was the petroleum minister at the time.
On July 2, 2001, President Olusegun Obasanjo revoked Malabu’s licence and assigned the oil block to Shell — without a public bid. Malabu went to court, but ownership was reverted to it in 2006 after it reached an out-of-court settlement with the federal government.
Shell fought back and commenced arbitration against Nigeria, but when President Goodluck Jonathan came to power in 2010, the controversy appeared to have been resolved with Shell and Eni agreeing to buy the oil block from Malabu for $1.1 billion.
The oil companies also paid $210 million as signature bonus to the federal government of Nigeria.
However, the deal has been enmeshed in more controversies and trials over allegations of bribery and shady deals by officials of the Nigerian government and their foreign accomplices.
The OPL 245 is reported to be one of the biggest untapped oil resources in Africa with reserves estimated at 9 billion barrels.
“Bribes were paid. The receipt of those bribes and the participation in the scheme of said officials was in breach of their fiduciary duties and Nigerian criminal law,” the court document read.
Reuters reports that Jonathan’s spokesman declined to comment, saying the former president was on duty as an election observer in South Africa.

Herrera confirmed his departure in a video released on United's official Twitter account.

Nuns step up in the fight against prostitution

a person that is on fire: Nuns around the world have set up the Talitha Kum network to help girls freed from human traffickers
Girls freed from the clutches of human traffickers worldwide are given shelter by nuns from the Talitha Kum network, which is marking its 10th anniversary with support from Pope Francis.
"We have sisters who go into the streets, but also to refugee camps, schools, tea plantations, (and) prisons," the international network's coordinator, Sister Gabriella Bottani told AFP.
"We can identify situations, do prevention work, offer help," she said.
Efforts to help those trapped in prostitution are regularly lauded by the 82-year old pope.
The Argentine choose an anti-trafficking Italian nun to write the Way of Cross meditations this Easter, with seasoned campaigner Eugenia Bonetti slamming public "indifference" as the main reason girls are still on the street.
On Friday, Francis opened an exhibition at the Vatican of photographs by Lisa Kristine of the US, portraying nuns working with victims.
Trafficking in women is "an octopus with many tentacles," said Sister Yvonne Clemence Bambara, who runs a rehabilitation centre in Burkina Faso.
"We have to work together in many ways to overcome it and mitigate the consequences as much as possible," she added.
'Rise up'
Many convents have been active in fighting prostitution since the 19th century. Their efforts were brought under one umbrella in 2009 with the creation of Talitha Kum -- Aramaic words from the bible that mean "Young girl, rise up".
The network has hundreds of members in India, where sisters train young people in villages and slums to be vigilant and work together to find children who have been sold to pimps or abducted by traffickers.
"If a child goes missing, we send the message out," Sister Prema Chowallur from Assam State in India told AFP by telephone.
The nuns have different types of shelters ready for those determined to get off the streets, offering both first response care and help with reintegration into society.
Sister Luisa Puglisi lives in just such a shelter in Valencia in Spain:
"What matters most is our presence with them on a daily basis," she said.
"Doing the dishes together, watching television... We give them something for free in a world where everything can be bought and sold".
As well as helping those who want to denounce their captors, or return to their home countries, the nuns also raise awareness in societies that may be reluctant to acknowledge the problem.
From poorest to richest
In the US, Sister Jean Shafer -- who ran a shelter for six years -- publishes a monthly newsletter on the phenomenon that is widely read within the Catholic Church there.
"We are able to talk with people of influence, money, education, to get them involved," she said.
"We can mingle among the poorest of the poor and among the richest of the rich."
In Australia, Sister Colleen Jackson spends one week a year meeting with lawmakers.
"We are generally trusted: some victims will speak to sisters before law enforcement," she said.
While many non-religious social workers appreciate their dedication, some worry about the Church's position on abortion.
"We are all against abortion, but none of us will put a girl who has made that choice out on the street," Bottani said.
Living with nuns does not necessarily come naturally to all of the girls, she admits, but she insists the human warmth and support they are offered means the world to many.
"The most important things are captured in a look. How we look at them, how they look at us," Bottani said.

8 suspects remanded in prison for oil theft

Justice Fatun Riman of a Federal High Court, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has ordered that eight alleged illegal oil dealers being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, be remanded in prison till May 22, 2019, when their bail application will be heard.
They include: Victor Umana, Asuquo Ita Bassey, Okon Edet Solomon, Anthony Okon Effiong, Asuquo John Esuya, Victor Okon Moses, Bassey Effiong Antai and Vincent Okon Antai.
They were arraigned on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy and illegal dealing in petroleum products.
They were arrested in April 2, 2019, by the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base Ibaka, in Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, with a wooden boat loaded with 501 drums of 300 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), and were subsequently handed over to the EFCC on April 8, 2019 for further investigation and prosecution.
One of the counts read: “That you, Victor Umana, Asoquo Ita Bassey, Okon Edet Solomon, Anthony Okon Effiong, Asoquo John Esuya, Victor Okon Moses, Bassey Effiong Antai, Vincent Okon Antai on or about the 2nd day of April, 2019 at Uyo, Akwa Ibom State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, without lawful authority and appropriate license conspired among yourselves to commit felony to wit- illegal dealing in one hundred and fifty thousand, three hundred litres (150,300) of petroleum product (Automative Gas Oil AGO) loaded in a wooden boat and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 3 (6) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act Cap M17 of the Revised Edition (Laws of the Federation of Nigeria) 2004 and punishable under Section 1 (7) (b) of the same Act.”

Phelan confirmed as Man Utd’s assistant manager

Manchester United confirmed Mike Phelan as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s permanent assistant manager on a three-year deal on Friday, ending speculation he could become the club’s technical director.
Meanwhile, reports linked the club to Wales winger Daniel James.
Phelan took up the role on a temporary basis when Solskjaer was appointed caretaker-manager on December 19.
When Solskjaer signed a three-year contract as manager on March 28 after winning 14 out of his first 19 matches, Phelan did not immediately do the same as assistant manager. Reports at the time suggested he could become technical director and lead a change in direction to the club’s scouting and recruitment.
However, the former Hull manager, who was under contract to Australian club Central Coast Mariners as sporting director when he initially joined Solskjaer at Old Trafford, has now agreed a deal.
“I think he’s fantastic at his job. I’m very pleased that it’s finally been agreed,” said Solskjaer, whose side have suffered an alarming dip in form since his appointment was made permanent.
“When Ed [Woodward, United’s executive vice-chairman] rang me, Mick was my first port of call to assist me.”
Phelan has a long history with United, having signed as a player in 1989, spending five years at Old Trafford, then returning to the coaching staff for a 12-year spell under Sir Alex Ferguson from 2001.
Solskjaer, who played for United during that time, suggested that Phelan’s experience and in-depth knowledge of the club were invaluable.

“I played here under him. He has the knowledge, the experience, the demeanour. Everyone in the club enjoys talking to him and discussing football with him.
“If you walk around Carrington, the players really respect what he can do. He’s worked with the best and for me, as a young manager, it’s really useful that Mick has experience in a few more eras than I have.”
A 1-1 draw at already-relegated Huddersfield last weekend ended United’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season after a run of two wins from their last 11 games in all competitions.
A summer of big changes is expected at Old Trafford and Solskjaer refused to confirm reports that the club are close to signing James from Swansea, having failed in an attempt to bring in England international Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.
The Norwegian did acknowledge that the 21-year-old fitted the profile of players United want to sign, with the manager keen to bring in young talent that can serve the club for the long term.
“I think I’ve been quite honest that challenging for the title next year would be a miraculous season, because we’re so far behind at the moment,” added Solskjaer. “So next season we’ve got to close that gap.
“If we manage to get to February, March and be close, that’s fantastic. If not, this summer will be about signing players who can last for many years here.
“I don’t think this club has ever been about bringing in ready-made players. Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t ready-made. Wayne Rooney wasn’t ready-made. Loads of players have come here and then developed into the top superstars that they’ve become. That’s always going to be the model here.”
Solskjaer hinted that midfielder Ander Herrera will feature for the final time in a red shirt against Cardiff on Sunday before he is expected to complete a move to Paris Saint-Germain on a free contract.
“Ander might play,” Solskjaer said. “I don’t know yet, because we haven’t picked the team. And he will probably announce later on where he’s going to continue his career.”

Lecturer revealed how she was abducted and raped in Rivers

A female lecturer in one of the tertiary institutions in Rivers State has recounted her ordeal in the hands of kidnappers.
The woman, whose name and face was protected, told newsmen at the 6 Division of Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, how she was raped in a forest in Emohua Local Government Area before she escaped.
She spoke after the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Aminu Iliyasu, paraded and handed over suspects in the case to the Police.
Her words: “I was in my house in Port Harcourt on April 30, 2019. I was alone with my children and my husband’s cousin. They were sleeping in the room.
“I was washing with machine at the balcony. Since it was around 8 p.m., there was a programme I always watched on Zee World.
“As I was washing my clothes, I was watching the programme. The main gate was locked, but the protector was open, since I had to go downstairs to get water.
“I was in the living room, when I noticed that the protector opened slightly. I was wondering, because if my husband returned from work, he would horn and I would have to go and open the main gate for him.
“I was wondering who was there. The other person who was supposed to come back from work was sleeping. The next thing I saw was the key to the main door opened.
“Then I saw two guys first, pointing a gun at me. One of them cocked the gun and he asked after my husband but I said he had not closed from work.
“He asked of my ATM card and PIN. I gave him. He asked if I had money in the house I said no but I had gold, which could be sold for N50, 000 but they rejected it.
“One person took our television, another took the laptop. I was tying a wrapper with spaghetti top since I was in my house. They then asked me to follow them.
“One of them asked me to get a dress but they did not let me leave the living room. The dress I wore to school that day was on my room’s door. They brought it for me and I wore it.
“They asked of my car’s key, I brought it out and I gave it to them. That was how they put me in my vehicle and as they were about to drive out, they found it difficult because of the space we share with our neighbour and they were hitting my neighbour’s fence.
“They drove off. We then got to a place that was not motorable. So, we had to come down. That was how we started the journey inside the bush. I asked them what I did but they did not respond.
“That day, they paid me salary. I told them to let me give them. One then gave me an account number, which I forwarded my salary N59, 000 to. As we were still going inside the bush, he called someone to confirm if the person had received the alert.
“We later saw river that got to my knees. The leader pulled his trousers but I had to carry my dress up. That night, we spent about two hours in the bush, just moving around and I was barefooted because they did not allow me to wear slippers, thereby giving me injuries.
“The next morning, out of the two of them that followed me inside the bush, one of them left, remaining one who told me that if I did not cooperate with him, to allow him to sleep with me four other persons would come in the afternoon and they would have me.
“But if I allowed him to sleep with me, he would let me go. I told him I would not be able to do it. When I was still sitting on the floor, he masked himself with his dress and he raped me.
“It rained heavily, we were all under the rain. I was completely wet. They removed their clothes and had only their boxer shorts. After the rain, they cleaned themselves and wore their clothes. That was the only dress I had and I could not go naked. I was so cold.
“Later in the day, another one came and he asked me if I would eat but I said I was not hungry. He said I should eat in that if I died, they would still collect the ransom.
“They later brought packed food; fried rice with two fried meat and sachet water with orange juice for me but I could not eat because I did not have appetite. I just managed to take the sachet water and the two pieces of meat.
“The elderly one that came seemed nicer. He said they would never rape their victims but I told him the other one had already raped me.
“He was surprised and went back to ask him. He confirmed raping me. He said in their culture, it was forbidden and that before they would let me go, they would do something.
“I told them I am a Christian and I would not be part of it. I said I had forgiven him and left him to God. He said when they got to our house and if they had seen N500, 000, they would not have carried me.
“He said teachers’ money (ransom) was N5 million, but if my husband could raise N3 million, they would let me go.
“Around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, they asked of what I would eat but I said I was not hungry but I asked them to call my people.
“They then called my husband, but he was calm and he said he had no money again since they had collected the over N100, 000 he had with the ATM card.
“That was when I knew that they had collected the money. I begged them to let me go but they asked me to shut up, claiming that I was talking too much.
“We then went back to where we were on Wednesday. While we were there, I had strength and I knew that members of my church were praying for me. I knew that my God would not let me down.
“I told God that after all my suffering, the kidnappers would not take the requested N3 million from my husband. They said my husband promised to call them before 12 noon on that day to drop the ransom.
“So, they were happy. One went to sleep, while the other took his phone and went away. I waited for a while, the one that went to make call was not coming.
“I did as if I wanted to urinate, the one that was sleeping did not ask me to come back. I saw it as an opportunity to escape. That was how I ran away.
“God helped me in the bush and I was following the sun but I was seriously injured and bleeding. I later came out of the bush and I saw a road.
“I did not know where I was. I was stopping vehicles but the dress I wore was so dirty. So, no vehicle was stopping for me. I then saw two guys in a vehicle, they helped me.”
