The latest incident comes after a 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Granada area on August 15, causing debris to fall from buildings and damaging some vehicles. Emergency services received hundreds of calls, although no serious injuries were initially reported.


Tuesday’s earthquake has reportedly left three people with minor injuries, including a child who was taken to hospital for treatment. Authorities have also reported additional tremors in the area, with some aftershocks exceeding magnitude 4.


Granada is one of the more seismically active areas of the Iberian Peninsula, meaning earthquakes and aftershocks are not unusual. Experts and emergency authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.


The Alhambra, one of Granada’s most famous historic landmarks, was not affected by the earlier earthquake, according to regional officials.


Authorities are advising residents to stay alert, avoid damaged structures and rely on official emergency information as seismic activity continues.

Malaria Drug Breakthrough Could Ease Treatment Worldwide

 


A promising new generation of malaria medicines is raising hopes of easier and more effective treatment, as scientists work to tackle growing drug resistance and the huge global burden of the disease.


A potential breakthrough in malaria treatment is offering fresh hope in the global fight against one of the world's deadliest infectious diseases.


Researchers are developing new antimalarial medicines designed to work differently from traditional artemisinin-based treatments. One promising candidate, MMV367/GSK3772701, has shown encouraging results in an early human trial, rapidly killing malaria parasites while being generally well tolerated by participants. The drug works by targeting two important enzymes involved in the parasite's metabolism.


The development is particularly significant because malaria parasites are becoming less sensitive to some existing treatments in parts of Africa. Scientists are concerned that increasing drug resistance could undermine decades of progress unless new medicines with different mechanisms of action are developed.


Another important advance came earlier this year when the World Health Organization prequalified artemether-lumefantrine specifically formulated for newborns and young infants weighing between 2 and 5 kilograms. It is the first malaria treatment developed specifically for this vulnerable age group, potentially helping address a long-standing treatment gap affecting millions of babies born in malaria-endemic regions.


Scientists are also investigating treatments that could simplify malaria therapy. A major research programme is exploring next-generation, non-artemisinin combinations that could eventually provide a single-dose cure for uncomplicated malaria, potentially making treatment easier for patients and improving adherence.


The need for such advances remains enormous. The WHO estimates that malaria caused approximately 610,000 deaths globally in 2024, with about 95% of those deaths occurring in the African Region. Children remain among the most vulnerable victims.


Despite the challenges, the global malaria response is entering an increasingly promising era, with new medicines, vaccines, diagnostic technologies and mosquito-control tools being developed and deployed. WHO says the possibility of ending malaria as a major public-health threat has never been greater.


However, experts stress that promising early-stage drug results do not mean a new medicine is immediately available to the public. Candidates must undergo larger clinical trials and regulatory review before they can become widely used.


If successful, the new generation of treatments could provide doctors with valuable alternatives when existing medicines become less effective, while simpler treatment regimens could make it easier for patients to complete their medication.


For millions of people living in malaria-endemic regions, particularly across Africa, these developments could represent more than scientific progress—they could become a crucial step towards saving lives and bringing the world closer to a malaria-free future.

Nine Sets of Twins Set to Start Primary School in Inverclyde

 


Inverclyde, Scotland — Teachers in Inverclyde were preparing to “see double” as nine sets of twins were set to begin their primary school journey, creating another memorable first day for schools across the Scottish council area.


The 18 children, aged four and five, were due to start Primary 1 at schools across Inverclyde. One school was expected to welcome three sets of twins, adding an extra touch of excitement — and potentially a few challenges — for teachers getting to know their new pupils.


The area has become informally known as “Twinverclyde” because of the unusually high number of twins starting school over the years. In 2015, a record 19 sets of twins began primary school in the area, while 16 sets started together the previous year.


The nine sets preparing to start school represented a smaller number than the 16 sets originally eligible to begin that year, after parents of seven pairs chose to defer their children's school entry.


The children were due to attend several primary schools, including St Patrick’s, St Francis’, Whinhill, Lady Alice and Craigmarloch, while Newark Primary School was expected to welcome three sets of twins.


For the children and their families, the start of primary school marked an important milestone — a chance to make new friends, experience a new environment and begin their formal education together.


Inverclyde officials also highlighted the area's unusually high multiple-birth rate. Among the children involved, the multiple-birth rate in Inverclyde in 2015 was reported at 2.25%, compared with a Scottish average of 1.15%.


The phenomenon has become something of a local tradition, with photographs of twins beginning school together providing a much-loved annual moment for families and the wider community.


For teachers, however, the arrival of nine sets of twins could mean an interesting challenge: learning 18 new faces, personalities and names — while making sure each child is recognised and supported as an individual.


Nevertheless, the first day of school is ultimately about much more than the novelty of having so many twins in one council area. It represents the beginning of a new chapter for the children, their parents and their teachers.

UK Couple Die in Helicopter Crash During Honeymoon in Greece

A British couple celebrating their honeymoon in Greece have tragically died after the private helicopter they were travelling in crashed on the popular Greek island of Sifnos.


The couple, identified by Greek authorities and local media as Alexander Cromie and Marie Ebert, were reportedly travelling to Sifnos when the helicopter crashed in the Tholos area on Monday evening. The Greek pilot, identified as Giorgos Raikos, also lost his life in the incident.


The helicopter reportedly went down shortly before its scheduled arrival at a helipad at around 6:15pm local time. CCTV footage is said to have captured the aircraft spinning before it plunged towards the ground and erupted into flames. Emergency services recovered three bodies from the wreckage.


Local residents reportedly heard an unusual and loud noise from the aircraft moments before the crash. Sifnos deputy mayor Manolis Fountoulakis said there were reports suggesting the helicopter may have experienced a mechanical problem while in the air. However, the precise cause of the crash has not yet been established, and an investigation is under way.


The crash happened in an inhabited area, but reports indicate that no homes were struck. Firefighters rushed to the scene to tackle the blaze, while additional emergency support was sent from the nearby island of Syros.


The tragedy has cast a shadow over what was supposed to be a joyful honeymoon for the British couple. The UK Foreign Office has said it is in contact with Greek authorities and is prepared to provide consular support to those affected.


Authorities are now examining the helicopter's flight path, available footage, weather conditions and possible mechanical problems as they work to establish what caused the fatal accident.


For the families and loved ones of the newlyweds, a holiday intended to mark the beginning of their married life has instead ended in unimaginable tragedy.
