4.8-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Granada, Spain, as Tremors Trigger Fresh Concern

GRANADA, SPAIN — August 18, 2026: A 4.8-magnitude earthquake has shaken Spain’s southern province of Granada, with tremors felt across surrounding areas and renewed concerns following a series of recent seismic events in the region.

The latest earthquake struck on Tuesday, with its epicentre reported near Gójar, close to Alhendín, where a stronger earthquake had hit just days earlier. Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN) subsequently revised the earthquake’s magnitude to 4.7 from an initial estimate of 4.6.

The tremor was strong enough to activate emergency alerts on mobile phones and was felt in several communities across Granada. Authorities urged residents to remain calm and follow earthquake safety instructions.

The latest incident comes after a 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Granada area on August 15, causing debris to fall from buildings and damaging some vehicles. Emergency services received hundreds of calls, although no serious injuries were initially reported.

Tuesday’s earthquake has reportedly left three people with minor injuries, including a child who was taken to hospital for treatment. Authorities have also reported additional tremors in the area, with some aftershocks exceeding magnitude 4.

Granada is one of the more seismically active areas of the Iberian Peninsula, meaning earthquakes and aftershocks are not unusual. Experts and emergency authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.

The Alhambra, one of Granada’s most famous historic landmarks, was not affected by the earlier earthquake, according to regional officials.

Authorities are advising residents to stay alert, avoid damaged structures and rely on official emergency information as seismic activity continues.

The situation remains under close observation as officials assess any further damage and monitor the possibility of additional aftershocks.
