EFCC Arraigns Suspected Land Racketeer for N86m Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday, May 18, 2017 arraigned one Ikechucwu Duru before Justice A. O. Otaluka of the Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Lugbe, Abuja on one-count charge of obtaining by false pretence.

Duru is alleged to have, between 2012 and 2013 “in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, by false pretence and with intent to defraud obtained the sum of N86million from Alhaji Aliyu Idris Shuaibu under the pretext of re-instatement of plot No 4 Cadastral Zone C10 located at Wumba District and allocation of a new plot of land”.

It is an offence contrary to Section 1(1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006.

He pleaded “not guilty” to the charge.

Prosecuting counsel, Mukhtar Ahmed, thereafter asked the court to fix a date for hearing since the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge. He also urged the court to remand him in prison custody pending trial.

Defence counsel, Micheal Eleyinmi, however moved his client’s bail application.

Was on administrative bail by the EFCC”, Eleyinmi said.

However, Ahmed in opposing the bail application said: “The defendant has earlier jumped the administrative bail granted to him before he was re-arrested by the Commission and he might again jump bail”.

After listening to the arguments, Justice Otaluka granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N2million with one surety in like sum. The surety, who must be a civil servant in Abuja on grade level 14, must show evidence of being in the service for the next five years.

The judge ordered that the defendant be remanded in Kuje prison pending the fulfillment of the bail conditions, and adjourned to June 5, 2017 for trial.

Leicester City 1 Tottenham 6: Four-star Kane pulls clear in Golden Boot race

Four goals from Harry Kane and two from Son Heung-min helped Tottenham to a 6-1 battering of Leicester City in their penultimate Premier League match of the season on Thursday.

England international Kane moved to 26 in the top flight for this season – putting him two ahead of Romelu Lukaku in the Golden Boot standings – while Son took his tally to 21 goals in all competitions in the emphatic victory.

The hammering puts Spurs on 83 points for 2016-17, three more than Leicester managed when they were crowned champions last term.

Son and Kane combined to put Spurs ahead before the South Korea star made it 2-0 as half-time approached with a well-taken volley.

Ben Chilwell gave Leicester some hope with his first Premier League goal, but a Kane header and a brilliant Son finish ended the Foxes' resistance.
Kane then struck twice in the closing stages to seal the dominant win for Mauricio Pochettino's swashbuckling side.

The defeat, Leicester's 18th of a miserable title defence, saw them miss out on the chance to draw level on points with eighth-place Southampton and did little to enhance manager Craig Shakespeare's chances of holding on to the job for next term.

For Spurs, who move back to within seven points of champions Chelsea, it was another impressive performance in an excellent campaign that will finish against Hull City on Sunday.

And there was enough time for Kane to take his tally to four and move top of the league's goalscoring charts outright.

Ronaldo tells Zidane to drop Bale, pick Isco for Champions League final

Cristiano Ronaldo is leading a group of Real Madrid players, who want manager Zinedine Zidane, to start Isco ahead of Gareth Bale, in next month’s Champions League final.

Bale has not played since Madrid’s defeat in the El Clasico, after picking up a calf injury.

The Welshman is yet to return to training, but is expected to be fit for the game against Juventus in Cardiff.

Diario Gol reports that some of his team-mates believe Isco, who has played in Bale’s absence, should keep his place.

Apart from Ronaldo, captain Sergio Ramos is also reported to have backed his countryman, along with Pepe, Casemiro and Fabio Coentrao.

Isco scored the crucial away goal in their Champions League semi-final victory over rivals Atletico

13-year-old boy accidentally shoots to death a 12-year-old girl on Facebook live

Livestreaming seems to have caused more harm than good because ever since it's inception, people now carry out fatal acts just to livestream it. In the case of the teenagers in this story, theirs did not seem intentional but someone is dead all the same.

This sad incident happened in Argentina. Some teenagers were playing with a shotgun when one of them accidentally shot Georgina MagalĂ Vega, 12, an only daughter, killing her instantly.

It happened on Santa Rosa de Calchines - Santa Fe, a small town of about 9.300 inhabitants.

At the start of the video, voices can be heard speaking in a foreign language - maybe Spanish. Georgina stood behind a chair while the boy with the gun sat in a chair, facing her.

"You kill me and I kill you." Georgina said in Spanish at the start of the morbid game.

The boy with the gun replied: "Look this! A shell...I load it... And I shoot you but you don't die!"

Georgina replied: "Do you see blood or something?" (Kidding)

The boy then fires the shotgun and there's a look of shock and pain on the girl's face as she falls to the ground. Panicked screams can be heard as voices in the background cried, calling "Georgi"

One other female voice can be heard screaming: "Man what have you done!?"

Then a male voice said: "Her parents are going to kill us!"

"I'm leaving..." the killer was heard saying in panic while they all cried but the other boy tried to stop Lucas from leaving.

"Stop Lucas come here," the other boy said.

Balotelli the winner after leaving Liverpool for Nice – Favre

Nice coach Lucien Favre has been revelling in Mario Balotelli coming good in Ligue 1 and suggested that he has enjoyed a better season than he would have done had he played with Liverpool this term.
The Italy striker has flourished in France, scoring 15 goals in 23 league games to fire Nice into the Champions League qualifiers thanks to a third-place finish.
Allowed to leave Liverpool on a free in August, Balotelli has also been shown three red cards, but Favre has impressively got the best from the infamously temperamental striker.
And, with Liverpool yet to be certain of their place in next season’s Champions League heading into the final day of the Premier League season, Favre believes his man has got the better end of the deal.
Favre told a news conference: “It’s clear, we must tell the truth, at the beginning, everyone was asking questions – ‘Will it work?’
“It was not easy to bet on that. But again, I said throughout the season, he helped us. He scored goals, in September I think, which gave us points, which gave us confidence.
“Even if, in January-February, it was difficult for him. We still managed to get 0-0, 1-1 … After that, he caught up on other matches. What he lacks is consistency.
“I was open [to the signing of Balotelli]. We did not have too many solutions, but we talked and then I thought it was a good idea.
“In the end, it was a very good idea!
“All in all, he helped Nice. On the marketing side too, we must not deny it. It also helped him to re-enter in the race because he was not very good after Liverpool. He trained with the youth team.
“In Nice, he did a great thing. Liverpool is fourth in the English championship, Nice is third in the French championship. And I do not know if there is a lot of difference between the two.”

Jose Mourinho officially drags Man Utd to new low

Whatever happens in their final game against Crystal Palace, Manchester United‘s first season under Jose Mourinho will end with their lowest number of wins in the Premier League era.

The Red Devils are on 17 victories so far and even an 18th on the final day of the season would represent their lowest since they won 16 in the 1990/91 campaign.

With Mourinho hired to improve on a dire three years under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, this lack of success in the league represents a major embarrassment for a manager so long regarded as one of the best in the world.
The Portuguese has won major honours with Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid in a distinguished managerial career, but has failed to make that same impact at Old Trafford so far.

Moyes’ United finished 7th in his single season in charge, but even that side, regarded as the worst in United’s modern history, won 19 matches in the 2013/14 season.
Van Gaal then guided the club to 4th and 5th in his two seasons in charge, with 20 and 19 wins, respectively. With United now confirmed as finishing 6th on fewer victories, it’s clear Mourinho has to make a quick improvement next season.

The Public Compliant Rapid Response Unit (PCRRU) disclosed this in its 2017 first quarter report released in Abuja Thursday.

The report, however, showed 52.8 per cent decrease in number of misconduct cases reported against police officers compared to last year.

An injured pedestrian told Reuters the driver's actions appeared to have been "intentional".

Other witnesses said the vehicle drove against traffic and onto the pavement before striking the pedestrians at about midday local time.

Fox News said one of its contacts at the New York Police Department (NYPD) told them the driver may have committed a robbery.
The New York Post reported that when the car eventually crashed into a pole, the driver got out of the vehicle and tried to run away, according to witnesses.

He punched a police officer before several cops were able to apprehend him, witnesses said. Fox said a 26-year-old is in custody.
Pictures on CBS News network showed a man the station said was the suspect being bundled into a police vehicle by several officers.

It ended up partly on its side outside the Swatch shop, at the corner of Broadway and W 45th St in one of the world's most popular tourist attractions.
One picture showed what appeared to be a dead woman in the middle of a pedestrianised area with a broken off wing mirror lying next to her.
One witness told Fox News: "The car was driving the wrong direction up Broadway before mounting the sidewalk.

Police said the driver of the car was in custody and being tested for alcohol.

59 Ikoyi Prisons inmates sit for 2017 UTME

Fifty-nine inmates of the Ikoyi Prisons Lagos on Wednesday and Thursday sat for the on-going Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
The figure was an improvement over the 32 that sat for the examination in 2016.
The Principal of the Ikoyi Prison School, Mr Idris Ibikunle, said that the candidates were better prepared this year, adding that he was expecting a better performance.
“More inmates registered for the examination this year because they saw the urge to secure their future and prepare for reintegration after their prison terms. Many of them have realised that they ought not to be in prison if they were educated.
“It is because of lack of education and lack of awareness that pushed some of them into getting involved in dirty habit and anti-social behaviour which landed them in prison.
“Some of them, because of lack of education, were cajoled into participating in criminal activities,’’ Ibikunle said.
The principal added that the prison authority had supported the inmates in preparing for the examination.
Ibikunle noted that the inmates would proceed to the National Open University of Nigeria if they meet up admission requirements.
The Deputy Controller of Prisons, Mr Julius Ezeugwu, said that the examination was conducted without any hitch, adding that he was optimistic that the candidates would perform well.
Ezeugwu explained that the examination was taken in batches in order to allow for those who have court appearance to do so.
Mr Kunmi Popoola, the JAMB’s Director of Psychometrics, who supervised the centre, said that the board provided the Prisons School centre with 60 new computers and accessories for the conduct of the examination.
He commended the zeal of some of the inmates towards education as they conducted themselves well during the examination.
“I am happy with the conduct of the examination for the inmates, it was orderly and smooth. The examination is a reformative step and not punitive.
“Those who are about completing their jail terms, are getting ready to be re-integrated into the larger society,’’ Popoola said.
According to him, the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, is very passionate about these class of candidates in ensuring that everyone is given equal opportunity.
