Warring southern Kaduna communities sign peace pact

CAMA bill dead on arrival, you can’t fight Church – Pastor Giwa dares Buhari

The senior pastor of Awaiting the Second Coming of Jesus Christ Ministry, Adewale Giwa says the dream of President Muhammadu Buhari to control the church through the Company and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) cannot come true.

The cleric in a statement to DAILY POST on Saturday specifically urged President Buhari not to flex his muscles at the church because nobody owns it.

Reacting on Saturday, Giwa wondered why President Buhari would not focus his energy on security, corruption and Nigeria’s bad economy.

The pastor alleged that the President is doing everything possible to silence the church of God.

The outspoken clergy, however, advised President Buhari to control the killings and other terrorist groups in the country before fighting the church.

“President Buhari wants to use the CAMA law
to silence us from speaking against injustice, maladministration and killings under his administration.

“It’s not possible because the Lord has declared the bill dead. Who controls his finances?

“How dare President Buhari and his agents fight the church? I think he should flex his muscles at fixing Nigeria instead of flexing his muscles at the church.

“Nobody owns the church, I believe his vice president who is a Christian should educate him. If you are fighting the church, you are fighting God, and no one can fight God.”

Olukoya: A former MFM pastor we stopped from stealing behind malicious reports against me

Olukoya: A former MFM pastor we stopped from stealing behind malicious reports against me

Daniel Olukoya, general overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), says a former pastor who allegedly tried to steal a branch of the church in Maryland, US, is behind the attempt “to tarnish his reputation”.

In a statement Collins Edomaruse, his media aide, issued on his behalf on Saturday, Olukoya said some people are plotting to destroy the global image of his church.

He said seven allegations were levelled again the church recently but all of them are false.

“It has become pertinent for the purpose of clarity to respond to the false allegations being peddled against the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries and our General Overseer – Dr. D. K. Olukoya in the social media,” the statement read.

“These allegations are seven (7) in number namely: No. 1 That Dr. Olukoya falsely claimed residence of US city of Maryland. Nothing can be further from the truth. Dr. Olukoya is a public figure nationally and internationally. His domicile is therefore a fact of public knowledge. The true position is that the Pastor who wanted to register MFM in Maryland inserted Dr. Olukoya’s name without prior consultation with or knowledge of the G.O because he believed that Dr. Olukoya should be involved but after he consulted a lawyer and received advice that a person’s name cannot be on the incorporation documents unless he is resident in Maryland, that registration was put in abeyance and allowed to lapse. The Pastor is still alive and all the evidence are there for all to see at the Company Registry in Maryland.

“No. 2 Allegation is that Dr. Olukoya Illegally Imported books into the United States and evaded payment of Customs duties on those books.

“This is also untrue. Dr. Olukoya’s books are sold on Amazon. It is fool hardy for anyone to suggest that he brought in his books to US illegally when he can and has been doing so legally. This false allegation was pioneered by a former Pastor of MFM who tried to steal MFM Branch in Maryland. He conceived this lie as his defence to a civil Suit the Church brought against him in the County Court in Maryland. This concocted lie could best be described as the wild thrashings of a drowning man intent on bringing everybody down with him. However, in defence of this allegation, MFM brought its book keeper to testify in court who produced all the receipts of payment and customs documents and, in the end, the Judge not only thrashed the wild allegation but gave judgement in favour of MFM.”

Olukoya also denied the allegation that the church’s trustees in the UK were suspended.

In 2019, the UK Charities Commission appointed an interim manager to Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries International.

At the time, the commission said it had concerns about the activities of the church including the repeated late filing of financial information, the governance of the charity and a failure in the administration which gives room for significant losses to occur.

But in his statement, Olukoya said: “The allegation that the Trustees in the UK were suspended is completely false. They were never suspended. They are still in charge of the Church even up till now. The trustees were never indicted. We can authoritatively say that no Trustee of MFM-UK has ever committed fraud.”

He said he wrote a letter to the UK Charity Commission to challenge the “non-factual nature” of the report written about him and the commission replied on August 20, 2019 that it would address the complaint.

COVID-19: FG has no plans for re-opening of universities – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has maintained it will not suspend the ongoing strike action.

National President of ASUU, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi said this during a stakeholder’s meeting at the Union’s Secretariat at the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Professor Ogunyemi said the federal government has continually failed to fulfill its Memorandum of Action agreed in 2019, insisting that the federal government may trigger another round of crisis should it force ASUU members into the IPPIS Scheme.

He noted that unlike other sectors, nothing has been put in place by the federal government in accordance with the COVID-19 health protocols for reopening of schools adding that, “Students’ hostels, lecture rooms and laboratories do not meet standards of schools in other countries”, which he said is part of the reasons for the strike.

“The narratives coming from government quarters does not edify what the University stands for. What they have said about us does not represent what we are doing but because they have polluted us with those undeserving of the job.

“As we speak, IPPIS is recruiting people without subjecting them to due process of employment. They are polluting and diluting the configuration of Academia.

“We will revisit the whole thing after this strike. Any department or Faculty where you think due process was not followed in recruiting staff, reject them. We will stand by you.

“The Nigerian Project cannot be made possible unless our Universities rise to the occasion. Our stakeholders have a duty to listen to all parties.

“The ASUU strike of 2013 that lasted 6months, we wrote about 59 letters and had 20 meetings but in this ongoing strike we’ve written about four letters and we’ve had few meetings. We’ve met with the Senate President and the Speaker and several Ministers but the only language they understand is strike action,” he said.

The ASUU Chairman also accused Vice-Chancellors of diverting funds meant for the revitalization of universities.

He further advised the academic staff to avoid making themselves vulnerable to people he called economic vampires, threatening that plans are on the way to deal with all Vice-Chancellors involved in fraud.

14 million Nigerian children are out of school – Obasanjo

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, on Saturday declared that over 14 million Nigerian children that should be in school are not in school, and thereby deprived of education.

Obasanjo made this known in Lagos at the virtual 2020 Fellowship Graduation Ceremony of the second cohort of “Teach for Nigeria Fellows”.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that “Teach For Nigeria”, an NGO, graduated 161 fellows who have impacted approximately 9,660 students in 80 schools across Lagos, Ogun, and Kaduna States.

Teach For Nigeria focuses on developing a movement of leaders across Nigeria who are committed to putting an end to educational inequity.

Obasanjo said: “They are deprived of opportunities that will allow them to develop their abilities and become useful to themselves and their communities.

“It is evident that at this point, to transform our education system in a sustainable way, Nigerian youths must take up leadership positions.”

According to him, our youths must champion different innovative solutions at every level of the society and across different sectors.

“It is inspiring to see the work that ‘Teach For Nigeria’ is doing to equip promising future leaders with the skills and experience to drive the change that we need,” the former president said.

He added that the leaders had dedicated their time, energy and resources to inspire love for learning, improved educational outcomes, and enhanced life opportunities for children in the classrooms.

“As a result of your commitment, your pupils have succeeded at various academic and non-academic competitions.
“I recently learnt about pupils of ‘Teach For Nigeria Fellows’ who came second in the National Lafarge Competition and other scholarship opportunities.

“They also initiated actions by working with stakeholders such as parents, community members, heads of schools and other teachers,” Obasanjo said.

He, however, advised the fellows to continue to leverage their acquired skills and experiences to advocate for educational excellence in the country.

The former president urged them to be ambassadors for change, driving the movement for freedom and justice in Nigeria.

“I strongly advise that you remain resilient in your fight for educational equity, not relenting on the strides of deploying solutions to tackle the myriads of problems confronting our education system.

“Please do not let anybody tell you that you are leaders of tomorrow, you are leaders today,” Obasanjo said.

He noted that the outbreak of the raging Coronavirus pandemic had put the world at its knees as the whole world strives to develop a vaccine and successful treatments to fight the disease.

“So far, the damage in Africa has been moderate; but if we relax, the African continent can become the worst affected from the economic fallout of the crisis,” Obasanjo said.

He said that our education system was already in crisis before the pandemic hit us.

“The outbreak has exacerbated the ever-widening gulf between the learning opportunities of our most privileged children and our less privileged children.
“To close the dangerous gap as a nation, we require prompt action from well-meaning Nigerians imbued with courage, patriotism, commitment, foresight and love,” Obasanjo said.

Also, Folawe Omikunle, the Chief Executive Officer, Teach For Nigeria, said that graduating fellows had spent the past two years improving the academic outcomes of their pupils.

Omikunle said that they ignited the love for learning in these pupils, instilling self-belief, successfully galvanising parental and community support to aid pupils learning process.

CAMA: You must submit details of your finances, no going back – Nigerian govt declares

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has said that those wailing over the new Company and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) should better stop because there is no going back.

CAC said the new act has come to stay in the country despite the public outcry that has greeted it.

The Commission said it was only waiting for the legislature to gazette it for immediate implementation of the law.

The CAMA bill was recently signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari, and was included in his list of achievements for the last one year.

The CAC Registrar-General, Alhaji Garba Abubakar, while speaking to Commerce Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CICAN) in Abuja yesterday wondered why the act was being opposed by religious bodies, especially the churches.

“They must henceforth subject their finances and expenditures for proper auditing, and copies sent to us at the CAC,” he said.

He explained further, “The new legal framework applies to all organizations registered with us; be it a religious organisation, NGO or CSO.

“Remember that they also have constitutions guiding them. The criteria to be a trustee of registered organisations are clearly spelt out in the laws establishing them.

“How is it that a registered member who qualifies to be a trustee in an organisation would not want government to know how the organisation is run? What are the responsibilities of the trustees?

“What are the responsibilities of the governing council or the board? How do you manage the affairs of the organisation? How do you use or expend the income and properties of the organisation? How do you appoint members of the governing board? These are the issues the new CAMA has come to address.”

Recall that the Christians Association of Nigeria (CAN), had recently described CAMA as satanic, demanding that the President halts the implementation of “the obnoxious and ungodly law until religious institutions are exempted from it.”

Paedophile defends his act, says checking daughter’s virginity

 Rape

A 40-year-old man, Gbenga Taiwo claimed that he wanted to check if his 15-year-old daughter was still a virgin after defilement allegations were levelled against him by the police.

According to reports, Taiwo allegedly started molesting his daughter when she was 13 at their rented apartment in Baruwa, Ipaja area of Lagos State.

Mr Ebenezer Omejalile, the Coordinator of ”Advocates for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network”, said that the victim got tired of the abuse and reported to her landlord who cautioned her father but he refused to stop.

“The girl said she had been constantly abused by her father since she was 13. He is about 40 years old and a retired electricity worker.

”Before the intervention of the girl’s maternal uncle, one Mr Alagba, the girl got tired of the wickedness of her father and informed their landlord who confronted the father to stop the evil act and he let him know the consequence of his action.

”But the suspect turned a deaf ear to it and kept doing it to the extent that whenever he was on night duty, he went to the office with the girl to keep having her to his satisfaction.

”The man claimed that he saw some pictures in his daughter’s phone and suspected that she was wayward. He said he did not have sex with her but only used his finger to check if she is a virgin or not.”

However, some family members of the suspect claim that he is mentally unstable and was checked into a private rehabilitation centre in Ise Oluwa Hospital in Abeokuta, Ogun State in 2018.

Confirming his arrest, the spokesperson of the state police command, Bala Elkana, said a test would be carried out to determine the mental state of the suspect.

‘It is courageous’ -UNILAG lecturers back FG on Babalakin, Ogundipe’s suspension

‘It is courageous’ -UNILAG lecturers back FG on Babalakin, Ogundipe’s suspension

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commended the federal government for suspending the university’s pro-chancellor and vice-chancellor.

In a statement on Friday, Ben Goong, spokesman of the ministry of education, had directed Wale Babalakin and Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, the pro-chancellor and vice-chancellor, respectively to recuse themselves from official duties.

The ministry had also set up a panel to probe the crisis rocking in the university.

The Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) also reported that President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the senate of the university to convene and nominate an acting vice-chancellor from among its members for the confirmation by the university council.

In an interview with NIGERIAN TRIBUNE on Friday, Dele Ashiru, ASUU chairman UNILAG chapter, described the decision as a courageous step.

He said the government’s decision would present an opportunity for all the parties involved in the crisis to present their cases before an independent panel which has been constituted.

“Our union appreciates the federal government for this courageous step to halt Wale Babalakin’s shenanigan in UNILAG,” Ashiru said.

Babalakin and Ogundipe have been at loggerheads since March over the institution’s 51st convocation which was later suspended.

ASSU had also passed a vote of no confidence on Babalakin in March accusing the pro-chancellor of insensitivity.

At a meeting of the governing council in Abuja on Wednesday, which was presided over by Babalakin, Ogundipe was removed as vice-chancellor of UNILAG.

Although Ogundipe rejected the decision, insisting that he remained the vice-chancellor, Oladejo Azeez, the institution’s registrar, appointed Omololu Soyombo as the acting vice-chancellor.

Nigerians in UK protest Southern Kaduna killings, to write Parliament , Boris

Some members of the Nigerian diaspora demonstrated Friday outside the Nigerian High Commission in London and will hand in a letter protesting the relentless attacks on communities in southern Kaduna by armed men of Fulani ethnicity.

Protestors gathered under the umbrella of the Southern Kaduna Peoples Diaspora (SOKAPDA) and carried banners stating, amongst other things: “Stop the Killings,” “Enough is Enough,” and “Justice for South Kaduna Christians”, while chanting: “It’s not a conflict, it’s a genocide,” “Our lives matter,” and “Southern Kaduna can’t breathe.”

Decrying the incessant loss of life this year, the protestors called on Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari to declare the militia a terrorist organisation and accused the international media of “a conspiracy of silence” regarding the deadly violence.

The protestors, who will also be delivering letters of protest to the UK Parliament and Prime Minister in Downing Street, criticised a recent television interview by Kaduna State Governor Nasir el Rufai in which he effectively held the people of southern Kaduna responsible for the spate of killings.

El-Rufai was quoted to have said: “they organise these killings and then, their leaders are invited by the governor, they wine and dine and they are given brown envelopes.”

He also accused community leaders of raising “a spectre of genocide […] so they can get donations and money into their bank accounts from abroad,” adding that his administration was amassing sufficient evidence to arrest them.

The interview, which has been widely condemned, occasioned a petition calling on the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to disinvite the governor as a keynote speaker for its 60th Annual Conference, which begins on 26 August, and inspired the Twitter hashtag #CancelElRufai2020.

In response, on 20 August the Nigerian Bar Association stated on Twitter that: “The National Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association at its ongoing meeting resolves that the invitation to the Kaduna State Governor, H.E. Nasir El-Rufai by the 2020 Annual General Conference Planning committee be withdrawn and decision communicated to the Governor.”

In a statement issued on 17 August, the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Samson O. A. Ayokunle, urged Governor el Rufai to “end the cycle of accusations and counter-accusations between the government and other stakeholders over the killings in Southern Kaduna”.

He also urged him to embrace a “round table” approach, adding that “every provocative statement over the matter should be avoided.

“Everybody is looking at the governor as a father of the state and this is the understanding with which he should handle every accusing finger pointed at him.”

Meanwhile, attacks on communities in southern Kaduna continue to occur, despite 24-hour lockdowns in four Local Government Authorities (LGAs) and the decision by the Defence Headquarters to deploy special forces to southern Kaduna to address the violence.

CSW’s Chief Executive Mervyn Thomas said: “CSW stands with the people of Southern Kaduna, both in the state and the diaspora, who are demanding an end to the relentless violence. Communities are deeply traumatised, and many are grieving the loss of loved ones, homes and livelihoods.

“We therefore urge Governor El Rufai to use his office and influence to seek solutions to the crisis and to avoid amplifying accusations which have no bearing on reality, and which merely exacerbate the situation by causing further distress. Both federal and state governments must reach out to all stakeholders in an even-handed manner in order to find a lasting solution to the violence.

“Instead of targeting victim communities, the authorities must focus on intercepting and disarming the non-state actors who are terrorising civilians, and on ensuring justice for those affected.”

In a statement issued on 19 August, the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU) revealed that the inhabitants of 109 communities in four LGAs Southern Kaduna have been displaced by militia men, who are currently occupying these areas.

The statement also highlighted that around 50,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) have sought refuge in camps across Southern Kaduna or have moved in with family members because their villages are either unsafe or have been taken over entirely.

As a response to a claim by Kaduna State Governor Nasir el Rufai that no area in southern Kaduna had been totally occupied, the statement listed the occupied villages, some of which have been held since 2019.

“It is our hope that with this information, government will begin the recovery of these rural communities back to the owners and the invaders [will be] apprehended and taken to justice.”

Killings in Southern Kaduna continue

Recent attacks were also detailed in the SOKAPU statement.

On 18 August, farmer and father of three Kefas Malachy Bobai, 30, and 16-year-old student Ms Takama Paul were killed when the militia attacked Unguwan Gankon village in Gora Ward, Zangon Kataf LGA, and burnt seven homes.

The killers were eventually chased away. Although Nigeria troops arrived after the killers had escaped, SOKAPU commended “their prompt response” and called on its members to “give maximum cooperation to all the forces deployed to safeguard southern Kaduna.”

On 17 August Mr Bulus Joseph, a 48-year-old father of nine was “murdered gruesomely” on his farm in Sabon Gida Idon, along the Kaduna-Kachia road, in Kajuru LGA, by Fulani militia. He had stood up to his killers, enabling his wife and three children who were on the farm with him to escape.

On the 16 August, Reverend Adalchi Usman of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) Unguwan /Madaki, Maro Ward, in Kajuru LGA, a 39-year-old father of two, was killed when a commercial vehicle in which he was riding was ambushed by armed assailants.

Mariah Na’Allah from Anchuna village in Zangon Kataf LGA and Ezekiel Maikasa from Gadanaji in Kajuru LGA also lost their lives in the attack. Danlami Dariya, the driver of the vehicle, was abducted and his whereabouts remains unknown.

Also on 16 August, the militia attacked Bugai village near Banikanwa in Kachia LGA, killing the Village Head, Dan’azumi Musa, 67; his elderly mother Kande Musa, 97, and his siblings Aniya Musa, 60, and Angelina Irmiya, 45. John Dan’azumi, Danbuzu Anita, Blessing Soja, Patricia Anita, Precious Friday and Mercy Yohana were seriously injured in the attack, and the village was looted and partially burnt.
