United reportedly planning January return for Ibrahimovic

Manchester United v Sunderland - Premier League

Swedish legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic is set to make a return to Manchester United in January according to the Daily Record, as his incredible recovery from a serious knee injury continues.

The injury was sustained as Ibrahimovic scored a stoppage-time winner against Belgian side Anderlecht, in which he ruptured both posterior and anterior cruciate ligaments.
The 35-year-old, who scored 28 goals for the Red Devils last season, has re-emerged in Jose Mourinho’s plans for next season, and is looking to link back up with the United squad in January, where he will hope to feature in the second half of the season.

This option comes as a blessing to Jose Mourinho, who is now able to indulge further into the transfer market for top targets, after the signing of Romelu Lukaku means he no longer necessarily need another forward.

Roma take interest in Mahrez

Michael Regan/Getty Images Sport

Roma look set to rival Arsenal for the signing of Riyad Mahrez from Leicester this summer.

According to Sky Sports, Roma have made contact with Leicester ahead of a potential move for the winger.

Mahrez is said to be keen on a move to Arsenal and has handed in a transfer request at Leicester.
The winger returned to training with his club last week, with his future still hanging in the balance.

Leicester boss Craig Shakespeare confirmed last week that no official bids had been made for Mahrez.

Leicester’s £50m asking price for Mahrez has prompted Arsenal to submit an offer for Monaco winger Lemar, thought to be around €45m.
Arsenal completed the club-record signing of Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon this summer, signalling their intent for the upcoming season.
They are now looking for an addition to their wide areas with Thomas Lemar and Mahrez the top two choices.

With Roma now going in for Mahrez, Arsenal could focus all their attention on a move for Lemar.

Military reacts to ‘coup plot’ against Osinbajo

The Nigerian military has restated its unalloyed loyalty to the President Commander-in-Chief of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, Muhammadu Buhari and total subordination to political and constituted civil authorities in the country.

This is contained in a statement on Thursday by Major General John Enenche, Director Defence Information

It condemned content of an article cautioning military officers against carrying out ‘coup’ being allegedly plotted by a cabal against Acting President Yemi Osinbajo.
The statement said the publication was aimed at undermining the efforts of the Armed Forces of Nigeria towards tackling the security challenges in the country and should be disregarded as an unfounded and absolute disinformation.
”It is therefore pertinent to clarify that he Chief of Army Staff never raised any scare of a coup in May 2017. Rather it was a normal service administrative caution to officers and men, that was issued by the Army on relationship between service personnel and civilians. Thus, the contrary assertion reported is a gross and evil intended message to the general public and therefore should be disregarded.

”The BBC’s Hard Talk with the Chief of Army Staff during his official visit to the United Kingdom was never arranged by any group or cabal as reported. It is a normal media practice to interact with principals of organizations on topical issues at such opportunities, which was what happened. It was not for any image burnishing as maliciously purported. Hence, it should be ignored.

”The book launched on Brigadier General Zakaria Maimalari in Abuja on 3 July 2017 was attended by notable senior citizens of Nigeria among others, including; former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon GCFR and former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo GCFR, both, who by every standard can never belong to any such thing as Cabals.
”It was not a cover for any power take over as wickedly portrayed not minding the presence of key patriotic elder statesmen and leaders at the event. This shows clear lack of situation analysis capability due to ulterior motive. Hence, should be discountenanced.

”Nigerian Military in the recent past has been in the fore front of the Country’s foreign policy and political direction of ensuring political stability in the West African Sub Region. The cases of Guinea Bissau, Equatorial Guinea and The Gambia are still fresh in the memory of Nigerians. In the Gambia, the Armed Forces of Nigeria took the lead in the military coalition to ensure that the will of Gambians was achieved and democracy sustained.

”Thus, it is morally, practically, professionally and ethically impossible for the contemporary Nigerian Military to embark on truncating democracy in its own Country. More so, members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria are in tune with best global practices of governance, which is civil democracy.” - Daily Post

How Nigerian man led a group that defrauded Americans of $1.3 million

Security authorities in the United States of America (USA) have explained how a Nigerian man, Babajide Fadeyibi, led a group that defrauded unsuspecting Americans to the tune of $1.3 million.

According to reports of an investigation carried-out by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the U.S. Secret Service; Fadebiyi recruited innocent Nigerians online

Those he recruited were supposed to cash counterfeit US checks and money orders at their Nigeria banks.
They were called ‘mystery shoppers,’ although they did not really shop for anything but were deceived into believing what they were doing was legitimate.

The VIRGINIA PILOT reports that Fadebiyi would collect the personal information of people interested in the mystery-shopper jobs and then send them counterfeit cheques or money orders.

After cashing the fake cheques or money orders; the ‘mystery shoppers’ would wire some of the money back to him before the banks realized the truth.
Most of the counterfeit cheques and money orders were cloned in Nigeria, based on legitimate versions obtained in the United States.
Another Nigerian named Oyeyemi Arogundade was alleged to be behind the designs and the cloning of the counterfeit cheques.

Six other co-defendants including one Hafeez Odoffin who resides in Chicago and Zoelithia Williams of Tennessee in the USA have been convicted of crimes relating to the alleged $1.3 million fraud.
However, Babajide Fadeyibi, the alleged ringleader, and Oyeyemi Arogundade remain at large as both men have been identified as living in Nigeria. - Daily Post

Nigerian passport to be produced locally from 2018

Nigerian passport to be produced locally from 2018

Muhammad Babandede, the comptroller-general of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), has said that plans are underway for the domestication of the production of the Nigerian e-passport.

Babandede disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja when members of the house of representatives committee on interior came on an oversight visit.
He said that the NIS was working round the clock with the support of the federal government to start the local production of the e-passports through the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company Ltd. by 2018.

The e-passport is presently being produced by Iris Smart Technology Nigeria Ltd. through its parent company, Iris Corporation based in Malaysia.
The comptroller-general said that the measure was to save cost,‎ ensure security of critical data base and create more jobs for Nigerians.
He said that the minister of interior had set up a committee comprising critical stakeholders to work out the modalities and implementation of the project.

He said that since there was a subsisting contract presently, all stakeholders including the national assembly would have to be carried along to realise the laudable project.
Adams Jagaba, chairman, house committee on interior, condemned the use of foreign companies for the production of the passport and other services.

Jagaba said the foreign companies “go away with more than 70 percent of the revenue generated from the production of the document while the Federal Government take less than 30 percent”.
He said the house of representatives had conducted a public hearing on the matter and explored ways to reverse the ugly trend. - News Agency

Ambode suspends traditional ruler for faking own kidnap — and ‘frolicking’ around

Ambode suspends traditional ruler for faking own kidnap — and ‘frolicking’ around

Akinwunmi Ambode, Lagos governor, has suspended Yusuf Ogundare, Baale of Shangisha in Magodo, for faking his kidnap.

The said kidnap took place on July 5 along the centre for management development (CMD) road in Ikosi-Isheri local council development (LCDA) area of the state.
In a memo addressed to the sole administrator of Ikosi-Isheri by Teslim Folami, commissioner for local government and community affairs, the governor directed Ogundare to stop parading himself henceforth as the Baale of the community till further notice.

“I am directed to convey the approval of his excellency, governor Akinwunmi Ambode of the suspension of Chief Yusuf Ogundare, baale of Shangisha with immediate effect in accordance with Section 38 subsection 1 of the Obas and chiefs laws of Lagos state which states that ‘the governor may suspend or depose any Oba or chief whether appointed or after commencement of this law, if he is satisfied that such suspension of disposition is required according to customary law or is necessary in the interest of peace and good government’,” the memo read.

“You are to communicate the decision to the chieftain to stop parading himself as Baale of Shangisha with immediate effect.”
Fatai Owoseni, commissioner of police, had earlier paraded Ogundare alongside Mohammed Adams, his suspected accomplice.
“On July 11 at about 10pm, a team of RRS patrol officers working around Alausa had sighted a vehicle drop a male adult in a suspicious manner close by Shoprite along the Secretariat road,” Owoseni said.

“The speed with which that car drove off attracted them to that spot and fortunately before they got to the spot, the car had taken off and a quick enquiry revealed that it was the Baale that was allegedly kidnapped.
“Immediately after while Ogundare was being debriefed, he sold a dummy that the kidnappers dropped him off but unknowingly to him, it had been found out that on the 5th of July, the day he was allegedly kidnapped in Lagos, investigation had revealed that he was driving around in Ibadan around Ashi; he went to Ilorin, he went to Iwo, he was just on a frolic.

“And unknowingly to him as well that because of information that had gotten to security services that his younger brother and his wife were being questioned and were actually in custody because of some discrepancies that were noticed in the interaction they had with security agencies, and in furtherance of the synergy existing between the Police and DSS, we jointly compared notes and our findings were such that the act of the chief was despicable and amounted to crying wolf where there is none.” - Cable Nigeria

Etisalat Nigeria changes name to 9mobile

Etisalat Nigeria changes name to 9mobile

Etisalat Nigeria is changing its brand name to 9Mobile, TheCable has learnt.

A few weeks ago, Mubadala Group, the major investor from the United Arab Emirates, pulled out of Nigeria’s fourth largest mobile operator, due to a N541 billion debt.
On July 4, 2017, a new board was appointed at Etisalat Nigeria, to handle the smooth transition of the telecommunications company after a reallocation of shares.

Hatem Dowidar, chief executive of Etisalat International, said the company, with a 45 percent stake in the Nigerian business, said it was giving the Nigerian telcom a few weeks to phase out the brand.
Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services Ltd. (EMTS), trading as Etisalat Nigeria, had said “discussions are ongoing between EMTS and Etisalat Group pertaining to the continued use of the brand, and EMTS will issue a formal statement once discussions are concluded”.
Boye Olusanya, former deputy managing director of Celtel Nigeria (now Airtel Nigeria), was appointed as the chief executive officer of Etisalat Nigeria to over see  the transition.

TheCable understands that Olusanya was appointed to oversee the transition of the company due to his experience in the smooth transition of Celtel to Airtel.

The transition of the telcom, with 21 million subscribers, was brokered with the aid of the Central Bank of NIgeria (CBN) and National Communications Commission (NCC).
NCC has warned the creditors that the licence awarded to Etisalat Nigeria is not transferable, effectively stopping the banks from taking ownership of the company. - Cable Nigeria

Liverpool reportedly have €65m Keita bid rejected

Johannes Simon/Getty Images Sport

Liverpool appear to be stepping up their efforts to sign RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita this summer.

The Reds’ interest has been well documented in recent times and according to reports from out in Germany, an offer worth €65m has been lodged.

Keita enjoyed an outstanding season with Leipzig last term, helping them to achieve a hugely successful campaign in the Bundesliga. This has prompted the interest of several top clubs across Europe.

Leipzig have consistently reiterated their stance that the enigmatic midfielder is not for sale this summer, but this does not look to have deterred Liverpool as they hunt for a top target.
The Reds will need to cough up more than their quoted initial offer of €65m to land Keita though, with RB Leipzig ready to battle off interest. -Read Sport

Assessing Rooney's return

Image result for Assessing Rooney's return

Wayne Rooney made a goalscoring return for
Everton on Thursday and could yet become a key piece of the puzzle under Ronald Koeman.

He took just 34 minutes to open his Toffees' account for a second time, sending the Tanzania National Stadium wild with a vintage Rooney strike.
His new team eventually beat Gor Mahia 2-1 thanks to another brilliant finish - this time by academy star Kieran Dowell - as Koeman's side opened their pre-season campaign with a victory.
We have picked out three talking points from Rooney's first appearance back in an Everton shirt…

Attacking intentTrue to his word, Koeman picked Rooney up front against the Kenyan Premier League leaders suggesting any midfield experiment started at Old Trafford is unlikely to continue at Goodison Park.
As Manchester United and England's record goalscorer, that decision seems logical. Give him a sight of goal and Rooney is a threat.
He barely needed even that against Gor Mahia, opening the scoring with a stunning hit from 30 yards. Rooney was allowed room to turn and having assessed his options, he left goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch no chance.

Always capable of the spectacular, Everton fans will hope it is a taste of more to come.
Rolling back the yearsIt's not a stretch to see similarities between Thursday's strike and his famous goal scored for his boyhood club against Arsenal all those years ago.
That was a 16-year-old Rooney playing in very different circumstances and against significantly stronger opposition, but this recent finish was a reminder - if one was needed - that he remains a gifted player.

It was his only effort on goal before he was replaced at the break as Everton toiled in the heat throughout the first half in Dar es Salaam.
But not many players have the skill - never mind the audacity - to score from such range. Returning to the Premier League, that kind of magic could make the difference in tight games.
Plenty to work on

The idea of Rooney harrying and stretching Premier League defences is a little far-fetched now but some of his touches in the final third betrayed his vision and class.
Still, it was far from a perfect performance - Everton were considerably better when Rooney was off the pitch in the second half - with his replacement Dominic Calvert-Lewin able to profit from the dynamic Tom Davies and Idrissa Gueye in midfield.

Rooney is unlikely to recover the physical qualities that made him such a danger to opposition defences and Calvert-Lewin was more effective operating in the lone striker role vacated by Romelu Lukaku.
But Rooney was not signed to replace Lukaku. His remit will be to support and in that regard he looked bright, especially when linking up with Ademola Lookman.

One move in particular caught the eye, Rooney playing a neat one-two with England's U20 World Cup winner only for Lookman to stumble at the crucial moment.
Overall it was a positive start for Rooney, making his first appearance just four days after signing for the club. - Sky Sports

Man Utd third on Forbes rich list

Image result for Man Utd third on Forbes rich list

Manchester United have been named by Forbes Magazine as the world's third most valuable sports team, behind the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Yankees.

United, who topped the annual list in 2011 and 2012, leapfrogged Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid to take the title of the world's most valuable football team at £2.86bn ($3.69bn).
In total, seven football teams made the 50-team list with Bayern Munich coming in 15th at £2.1bn ($2.71bn), Manchester City coming 35th on £1.61bn ($2.083bn); Arsenal at 43rd on £1.49bn ($1.93bn) and Chelsea in 46th on £1.42bn ($1.845bn).

Despite not winning a Super Bowl since 1996, the Dallas Cowboys comfortably finished first after being valued at £3.26bn ($4.2bn), an increase of five per cent. The Cowboys also finished first in 2016 as they unseated Real Madrid at the top of the list.
The 32-team NFL is the world's richest league, with an average operating profit of $91m and no club turning over less than a $26m profit.
Only three NFL clubs missed the 50-team Forbes richest roll call - the Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions and Buffalo Bills.

Major League Baseball's New York Yankees ranked second on £2.86bn ($3.7bn), a nine per cent boost from last year. They boast £93m in sponsorships and £100m in premium seat revenues, tops in the major leagues. In all, eight major league clubs made the Forbes list.
Topping NBA clubs in seventh overall were the New York Knicks on £2.55bn ($3.3bn), up 10 per cent in value despite struggling on the basketball court. They have not had a play-off berth or winning season since 2013 and have won only one play-off series since 2000.

In all, there were seven NBA clubs on the list. The reigning champion Golden State Warriors shared 20th with the NFL's Houston Texans on £2bn ($2.6b), leaping 37 per cent in value.
The biggest gainer on the list was the NFL's Los Angeles Rams, doubling in value after a move from St. Louis to land in 12th overall with a new stadium owned by Stan Kroenke set to open in 2020.

Kroenke is also the biggest shareholder in Arsenal, which suffered the list's worst plunge, tumbling 20 spots and off four per cent due to a decline in the British pound after Britain voted to leave the European Union.
Liverpool, who finished 41st in 2016, were among two teams to fall off the list entirely along with the NBA's Houston Rockets.

Mohamed Salah receives visa

AC ChievoVerona v AS Roma - Serie A

Mohamed Salah has received his visa and is therefore eligible to play for Liverpool with immediate effect.

The Egyptian winger joined the Reds from AS Roma last month in a deal thought to be worth around £37m.
However, his eligibility to play wasn’t confirmed until he had a visa. In a bizarre process of events, the 25-year-old had to leave the country and then return again for his visa application to be complete.

He spent Wednesday in Paris attending the British Embassy for a meeting.
Now that has been dealt with, Salah can now link up with any of Jurgen Klopp’s future squads for preseason and eventually make his short awaited debut.

He missed Liverpool’s victory against Tranmere on Wednesday evening, as the Reds cantered to a 4-0 win, with goals from James Milner (penalty), Marko Grujic, Pedro Chirivella and Ben Woodburn (penalty).
Liverpool take on Wigan on Friday night, so don’t be surprised if the former Roma player features for the first time. - Read Sport

Man City & Spurs agree £50m Walker fee

HD Kyle Walker

Manchester City and Tottenham have agreed a fee for Kyle Walker, Goal understands.

City have long since agreed personal terms with Walker and, barring any late and unforeseen mishaps, the deal should be finalised before Pep Guardiola takes his squad to the United States for pre-season on Monday.

Goal reported on Wednesday that Spurs had made it clear that they would hold out for £50 million for Walker, after City failed in their pursuit of Dani Alves.
It is understood that City and Spurs wrapped up the deal on Thursday morning.

The Blues had been utterly convinced that Alves would be moving to the Etihad Stadium having agreed personal terms several weeks ago.
But a last-minute change of heart saw him move to Paris Saint-Germain. At his unveiling on Wednesday he apologised for Guardiola and City.
Spurs looked to take advantage of the situation and force City to meet their demands after weeks of negotiations.

They informed Blues director of football Txiki Begirisitain that they would not sell for anything less than £50m, or at least a deal that would surpass £50m were it to include a number of achievable add-ons.
It appears that City's desire, or indeed desperation, to bring in reinforcements at full-back before they fly to America on Monday has led to a deal being pushed through.

Sources close to City's decision makers have previously told Goal that dealing with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy had been incredibly frustrating, but they are now content that they have finally reached a breakthrough.
City agreed personal terms with Walker and indeed most of their targets this summer some time ago.

Talks are ongoing for Monaco left-back Benjamin Mendy and City are hopeful they can also conclude a deal for the France international before Monday, though his current club leave for their pre-season camp on Thursday afternoon.
City have been confident of signing Mendy for some time, and although they have so far been unable to find a breakthrough with Monaco after weeks of wrangling, there is a sense that a conclusion is near.

The French club have been holding out for £40m and though City had been hoping to lower that price they are now ready to do as they have done with Walker and get the deal over the line as soon as possible. - Goal

Italy v Liechtenstein - FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier

The new emerges on the same day that reports in Italy are linking the Rossoneri with a move for Juventus’ Leonardo Bonucci.

It’s been a summer of spending for Milan, following their high-profile takeover, they are aiming to regain their authority in Italy, having not lifted the trophy since the 2010-11 season.
Belotti endured a fantastic season in Serie A last season, scoring 26 times in the league alone.

Murphy impressed for the England U21s side over the summer, increasing interest in the wide man.

The Norwich winger has already turned down a move to Crystal Palace this summer in the hope of holding out for a move to St James’ Park.
Newcastle have already failed with an initial bid for the player and are expected to return with a second an improved bid.

Kyle Walker close to signing for Man City

England v Lithuania - FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier

According to numerous media outlets, Manchester City are close to completing the signing of Kyle Walker.

The Sky Blues have been chasing Walker for most of the transfer window, with Spurs reportedly holding out for an oversized fee.
It’s thought that the clubs have now agreed on a figure of around £50m (with add-ons potentially taking the deal higher).

He’s supposedly due in for a medical tomorrow (Friday) and will then head on tour with his new teammates.

At that price, Walker will become the most expensive defender ever – some statement of intent from a Manchester City side that have already done some expensive, early business.
It’s a blow for Spurs, who will now be hoping to kick start their own transfer spending with the record breaking fee they’ll receive from the sale.

1860 Munich's Allianz Arena contract cancelled by Bayern

AllianzArena-cropped: Allianz Arena - the old home of 1860 Munich

The lights will no longer illuminate blue at Allianz Arena after Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich cancelled the contract of beleaguered tenants 1860 Munich.

Bayern terminated 1860's contract on Wednesday following the rapid demise of their Munich neighbours – winners of the Bundesliga in 1966.
Former Bundesliga club 1860 lost a relegation play-off against Jahn Regensburg in May, which sent them down to 3. Liga, but failure to make a payment to the German Football League to secure their status in the division meant they dropped down further.

A statement from Bayern read: "The cancellation of the contract means the Allianz Arena is no longer TSV 1860 Munchen's home ground. The agreement precludes 1860 returning to the stadium at a later date."
1860 had called Allianz Arena home since its opening in 2004-05, sharing the stadium with Bayern.

Having previously held an equal share in the stadium, 1860 sold their half to Bayern in 2006 but they continued to host matches at the ground as a tenant. - Goal

The defender, 34, was linked to Manchester City and a reunion with ex-Barca boss Pep Guardiola for much of the transfer window but has instead opted to move to France.

Alves was allowed to leave Champions League finalists Juventus with a year left on his contract after the 2016/17 season, in which he won Serie A and the Coppa Italia.
PSG will attempt to win back the Ligue 1 title from last season’s surprise champions Monaco and Alves is their second signing of the transfer window after left-back Yuri Berchiche’s arrival from Real Sociedad.

Alves apologised to Guardiola and City for snubbing the Premier League club, but claims he has joined PSG “to be a champion”.
“If Pep Guardiola and Manchester City feel hurt, I am sorry… I have come here to be a champion,” Alves told a news conference.
He added: “I’ve had the pleasure of winning the Champions League three times and I want to bring my experience here.”

Guardiola had let right-backs Bacary Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta leave City at the end of their contracts and Alves appeared set to join the Premier League side, with his change of heart reportedly shocking the Premier League club.
Prior to his sole campaign at Juve, Alves had previously spent eight successful seasons with Barcelona, winning LaLiga six times and the Champions League on three occasions.
Sevilla and Bahia are his other two professional clubs, while he reached 100 caps for Brazil last year. - Journal.ie

Domestic violence : Gadget calls the police after listening to man 'beat and threaten to murder' girlfriend

A man who allegedly beat his girlfriend and threatened to kill her has been arrested after a “smart speaker” alerted police.
She suffered facial injuries during the attack but refused medical attention, and her child was unharmed.

Police say the gadget overheard the incident and recognised one of the alleged attacker’s remarks as a command, and proceeded to call 911.
However, there’s confusion around the identity of the device, which was initially claimed to be a Google Home.

Eduardo Barros and his girlfriend, who has not been identified, had been house-sitting in Tijeras, a village in New Mexico on 2 July.
The 28-year-old allegedly got angry over a text message his girlfriend had received, and accused her of cheating on him before waving a gun and threatening to kill her. He then hit her in the face with the gun, says Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office.
At one point during the dispute, he is alleged to have asked her: “Did you call the sheriff?”
A smart speaker in the house understood this as an instruction and called the police, said Felicia Romero, Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department Deputy.

The device in question was initially believed to be a Google Home, but Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office then said it was an Alexa-enabled gadget.
“In the 911 recording the victim can be heard yelling ‘Alexa, call 911’”, it says.
However, Amazon has told Albuquerque Journal that Alexa can’t actually call 911.
“Barros told her she was not going anywhere and he was going to kill her,” reads an arrest warrant affidavit, reports the New York Post.

“When 911 called her phone, Barros saw the caller ID and threw [her] to the floor. Barros then kicked her while on the ground at least 10 times in the face and stomach. Barros told [the victim] he could not believe the cops had been called and he was not going back to prison and that she knew he was a felon. [The victim] stated she thought she was going to be killed or shot.”

Smart home technology is growing increasingly popular and, though it potentially helped save a life in this particular incident, there are fears about just how much they can learn about us, and how they can be used for advertising purposes..
In April, for instance, Burger King attempted to hijack people’s Google Home voice assistants by releasing a TV advert asking, “Okay Google, what is the Whopper burger?” However, the stunt backfired.

“The unexpected use of this new technology to contact emergency services has possibly helped save a life,” said Sheriff Manuel Gonzales III. “This amazing technology definitely helped save a mother and her child from a very violent situation.”
