2023: APC, PDP leaders in secret deal to keep power in North – Bamgbose

Olusegun Bamgbose, a chieftain of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, has claimed that key leaders of the two leading political parties, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the All Progressives Congress, APC, are in top secret deal to make it difficult for any Southerner to emerge as presidential candidate under their platforms come 2023.

According to him, this is a new dimension as the stakeholders battle for the race to Aso Rock, adding that the recent clampdown on the national leader of the APC, Bola Tinubu and Raji Fashola were part of the plans.

“APC, PDP key leaders are in top secret deal to make it difficult for any Southerner to emerge as Presidential candidate in any of the two major parties, APC and PDP,” he told DAILY POST.

“Recently the PDP panel that was set up to look into the issue of zoning rejected zoning. This in essence means that Abubakar Atiku, former Vice President of Nigeria will most likely get the PDP Presidential ticket.

“APC is following the footsteps because it’s a deal. Ordinarily if Tinubu gets the APC ticket he might not be able to defeat Atiku for obvious reasons.

“In other words, the dummy APC will sell to its leaders is for them to also cowtow the line of PDP in order to retain power come 2023.

“This is the top secret deal between the two major parties. However some stakeholders in the parties are not in agreement with these postulations.

“They are of the view that in order to preserve the unity of the country, power must be restored to the South.

“Let me, however, assure Nigerians that there is no cause for alarm, come 2023, a Southerner will emerge as President.

“Agitations for Oduduwa and Biafra Republic won’t be the way out. Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance. We must plan ahead.

“The South can’t get Presidency on a platter of gold, we must work for it and we will surely get it, It has happened before and it will happen again.

“Our challenge is just bad leadership. The exit of Buhari will certainly usher in times of refreshing. By His grace I’ll strengthen the unity of Nigeria in 60 days of assumption of office as President of Nigeria.

“What we need is just a detribalised leader who is passionate about making Nigeria great. We need a leader who will value our unity more than any other thing,” he stated.

UK varsity to return Benin bronze to Nigeria — 64 years after ‘immoral acquisition’

The University of Aberdeen in Scotland has announced its readiness to return looted Benin kingdom bronze in its possession to Nigeria.

In a statement on Thursday, the institution said it acquired the bronze sculpture, depicting an Oba of Benin, in 1957 at an auction.

According to the institution, the bronze was among thousands of metal and ivory sculptures and carvings looted by British forces in 1897 when they invaded Benin City in Edo state.

It added that the development makes the University of Aberdeen “the first institution to agree to the full repatriation from a museum of a Benin bronze.”

Neil Curtis, Aberdeen’s head of museums and special collections, said the move followed a review initiatied by the institution which found the bronze was acquired in an “extremely immoral” manner.

“The University of Aberdeen has previously agreed to repatriate sacred items and ancestral remains to Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and has a procedure that considers requests in consultation with claimants,” he said.

“An ongoing review of the collections identified the Head of an Oba as having been acquired in a way that we now consider to have been extremely immoral, so we took a proactive approach to identify the appropriate people to discuss what to do.”

Also speaking, George Boyne, the institution’s principal and vice-chancellor, said the bronze was acquired in “reprehensible circumstances”.

Boyne said the repatriation was in line with the values of the varsity as an international and inclusive insitution “dedicated to the pursuit of truth in the service of others.”

“It would not have been right to have retained an item of such great cultural importance that was acquired in such reprehensible circumstances. We therefore decided that an unconditional return is the most appropriate action we can take, and are grateful for the close collaboration with our partners in Nigeria,” he said.

On his part, Lai Mohammed, minister of information and culture, described the varsity’s gesture as a welcome development while urging others in possession of art works looted from Nigeria to replicate such.

“The reaching out by the University of Aberdeen and eventual release of the priceless antiquity is a step in the right direction. Other holders of Nigerian antiquity ought to emulate this to bring fairness to the burning issue of repatriation,” he said.

The development comes days after the Humboldt Forum, a museum of non-European art in Berlin, Germany also announced move to return looted Benin bronzes to Nigeria.

U.S. Embassy warns Nigerians against fake U.S. work visas

The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria on Thursday warned Nigerians not to fall victims of a fake U.S. work visas said to be for people  aged 40 to 55.

The embassy in a tweet said:

“Scammers and fraudsters are circulating a fake “press release” claiming to offer a new type of work visa to Nigerian citizens aged 40-55.

“It’s the same old scam, but in fresh packaging – don’t become a victim!”

The embassy in another tweet urged Nigerians who need information on the genuineness of visas to contact official U.S. sources:

“If you have questions about whether visa information is legitimate, please refer only to official sources: https://travel.state.gov, https://ng.usembassy.gov/visas, and https://ustraveldocs.com/ng.

The fake press release claimed to be from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services.

It said that those eligible for the work visa are health workers, engineers, marine workers, accountants, etc.

It read: “President Joe Biden, the 46th US. President has signed an Executive Order that interested citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who measure in some special professions are eligible for American Work E-Visa and Residence Permit. This was communicated to the Nigeria US Department of immigration.

“Applicants and children who have been vaccinated must make a pre-visa vaccination deposit of $150 per person which is required as a condition for visa approval.”

“Applicants are also required to make a deposit of $250 for English proficiency test”.

Leah Sharibu: Nigerian govt has failed us, allow America rescue our daughter – Parents

Parents of Leah Sharibu, Nathan and Rebecca have decried the abandonment of their daughter, Leah with her abductors by the Federal Government, saying her endless captivity is a sad situation.

Although the teenager is said to be nursing her second child in captivity, her parents said Nigeria has failed Leah, and pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to accept America’s offer of assistance to secure the release of their daughter.

The parents in a statement issued to DAILY POST by their spokesperson, Dr. Gloria Puldu demanded that President Buhari brings back their daughter with or without children because Leah still remains their child, and they will take her back no matter the situation or the condition she comes out with.

The statement reads in part, “Morning of March 23 was another very difficult day as we woke up to the very sad and heartbreaking rumours that Leah Sharibu who is still in captivity since three years has given birth to a second baby in captivity.

“It is a very big shame on General Buhari and his entire government. He has abandoned this young child in captivity.

DAILY POST recalls that two weeks ago, Nathan and Rebecca called on the President to use the current negotiators his administration is using who successfully negotiated and secured the release of mostly, if not all 300 Muslim Kankara boys from Katsina, just six days after their abduction.

Recall also that in February 2021 they also negotiated and secured the release of about 27 school boys from Kagara in Niger State and 317 schoolgirls from Jangebe in Zamfara State who all regained their freedom within a few days of their abduction.

The parents further lamented that, “Nigeria has woefully failed Leah Sharibu, what a very big shame. Nations all across the world value their citizens and will go to any length to rescue their adult citizens let alone their children, yet the Buhari administration has abandoned Leah Sharibu, the lone Christian girl for over three years in captivity.”

It added, “This same administration has abandoned the remaining 112 Chibok girls for almost 7 years. Nigerians recently saw how the American Government came to rescue one of its citizens who was abducted in Niger Republic but transported into Nigeria (another Sovereign State).

“Yet Leah, a minor has been abandoned and forgotten by her government”, they decried.

“We know that the American Government has recently offered to assist Nigeria in its fight against insecurity if the Nigerian Government requests for its assistance.

“Leah’s parents are calling on General Buhari to please accept the American offer of assistance to secure the release of their daughter, especially if his current successful negotiators are not able to secure her release as they did with the recent school abductions.

“Nigerians are tired of the widespread insecurity all across the country especially the frequent school children abductions.

“Traumatised parents of Leah, Nathan and Rebecca Sharibu are crying and demanding that General Buhari brings back their daughter with or without children. Leah still remains their child and they will take her back no matter the situation or the condition she comes out with.

“Leah remains a heroine in the eyes of every Christian all over the world for her bold and courageous stand to refuse to renounce her Christian faith despite the extreme danger.

“Leah represents the face of women and girls in all forms of slavery and captivity in Nigeria.

“We call on all well-meaning Nigerians not to remain silent but speak up against the injustice done against our children,” they stressed.

‘We can’t continue subsidy’ — NNPC GMD says petrol may sell for N234 per litre

Mele Kyari, general managing director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), says the company cannot continue to bear the subsidy burden.

The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) had released a template increasing petrol price to N212 per litre — but the template was later deleted.

Speaking during a ministerial briefing on Thursday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Kyari said NNPC can no longer bear the burden of underpriced sales of premium motor spirit (PMS), better known as petrol, adding that the market price need to be implemented.

“The price could have been anywhere between N211 and N234 to the litre. The meaning of this is that consumers are not paying for the full value of the PMS that we are consuming and therefore someone is paying that cost,” he said.

“As we speak today, the difference is being carried in the books of NNPC and I can confirm to you that NNPC may no longer be in a position to carry that burden.”

The NNPC GMD said the federal government is working to deepen the auto-gas programme which will serve as alternative to petrol.

“That is why early last year if you recall, the full deregulation of the PMS market was announced and we have followed this through until we got to September when prices shifted to N145,” he said.

“As we speak today, I will not say we are in a subsidy regime but we are in a situation where we are trying to exit this subsidy or underpriced sale of PMS until we get in terms with the full value of the product in the market.

“Today, PMS sells across our borders anywhere above N300 at any of our neighbours. And in some places, it is up to N500 and N550 to the litre.

“In some countries, the Nigerian fuel is their primary fuel. We are supplying almost everybody in the West African region, so it is very difficult to continue this because we have our own issues and that is why the eventual exit from this is completely inevitable.

“When that will happen, I do not know. But I know that engagements are going on. The government is very concerned about the natural impact of price increases on transportation and other consumer segments of our society and as soon as those engagements are taken to logical conclusion, I am sure that the market price of PMS will be allowed to play at the right time.”

The resurgence in the price of crude oil bodes well for the Nigerian economy as this will boost the county’s revenue needed for the implementation 2021 budget, improve crude oil receipt and consequently bolster foreign exchange inflows.

However, the prolonged high crude prices would ultimately feed into a climb in petrol’s landing cost — meaning an increase in fuel price. This would further weaken the purchasing power of Nigerians who are already battling with high inflation, unemployment and stuttering economic growth.

Ogun abduction: We know kidnappers’ hideout – Police

The Ogun State Police Command has said it knows the hideout of the gunmen who abducted the Olori-Ilu of Imope in Ijebu North Local Government, Chief Kolawole Akintayo.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this in an interview with DAILY POST on Wednesday.

Akintayo was kidnapped by some suspected bandits along Oke Eri-Imope road, while coming from Ijebu-Ode.

The community leader was released on Tuesday night after serious search by the police and other local vigilantes.

Speaking with our correspondent, Oyeyemi disclosed that the state command knew where the kidnappers were hiding after they took the man away.

Asked why none of them was arrested even after the release of Akintayo, Oyeyemi said the police decided not to storm the kidnappers’ den in order not to “jeopardise” the life of the abductee.

“All this while, it is not that we don’t know where they (the kidnappers) were. But if we stormed the place and engaged them in ‘fire-for-fire’, we’re going to jeopardise the life of that man too. That is why we had to tread softly.

“But now that we have secured his release, we have every opportunity now to go after them.”

EFCC witness: I handed over $15.8m to Suswam at his Maitama residence

Abubakar Umar, a witness of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has told a federal high court in Abuja how he allegedly handed over $15.8 million to Gabriel Suswam, former Benue state governor.

Umar, who is a bureau de change operator and owner of Fanffash Resources, has been in the witness box since 2016.

In 2017, he was declared a hostile witness after giving conflicting testimony based on what he had earlier told the EFCC.

In his written statement before the EFCC, Umar said he took the money to the governor at his residence in Maitama, Abuja.

But giving evidence before the court, he said he took the money to the government house in Benue state.

However, at the court session on Wednesday, the witness reaffirmed his earlier statement to the EFCC.

Led in evidence by Rotimi Jacobs, EFCC’s counsel, he alleged that he was being threatened by associates of the former governor who asked him to change his statement.

“I changed my statement because of the pressure I received from Suswam’s people,” he said.

When asked by prosecution counsel what the alleged Suswam’s allies wanted him to change, he told the court that they wanted him to change where and whom he gave the dollar equivalent of N3.1 billion.

He also insisted that his company, Fanffash Resources, has no relationship with the Benue state government and that he also has no business or contract with Elixir Investment Partners Limited.

“I don’t know Elixir but sometime in August 2014, Suswam called me to his house in Maitama and introduced me to a lady and asked me to give her my account details,” Umar said.

“Suswam said when I see the money, I should give him the dollar equivalent which I did, amounting to $15.8 million, while using N197 as the exchange rate.

“I handed over the dollars in cash to Suswam at his residence in Abuja.”

The matter has been adjourned till May 25 for continuation of trial.

Suswam and Omadachi Okolobia, a former finance commissioner in the state, are standing trial on 11 counts over money laundering allegations.

The duo are accused of diverting N3.1 billion from the coffers of the state.

They were first arraigned before Ahmed Mohammed, a judge of the federal high court, in 2015.

However, Mohammed recused himself from the case following the allegation that he was bribed by the defendants to make a favourable judgement.

Thereafter, the judge returned the case file to Adamu Kafarati, chief judge of the federal high court, at the time.

Kafarati assigned the case to Okon Abang, another judge, but the court of appeal in February 2020, ordered that the case be returned to Mohammed.

Herdsmen: Our forefathers stopped them in 1804, we are not afraid – Ortom

The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, on Wednesday, said the Tiv nation in 1804, fought and stopped the Fulani herdsmen from taking over the State.

Ortom who spoke with BBC Pidgin at the Benue People’s House, Makurdi, insisted that they are not afraid to follow the steps of their forefathers.

He revealed that the herdsmen have a hidden agenda that is triggering their desire to flood the State.

According to Ortom, before the enactment of the law prohibiting open grazing in Benue, the Fulani herders were snicking into the State to enslave the citizens and take over the land.

The governor said: “They want to take over Benue and make us slaves. That is what they have been trying since the days of our forefathers.

“Our forefathers stopped them in 1804, they cannot take over our land.

“They are not coming to Benue to graze cattle, they are only using that as a way to gain access into the state.

“God opened my eyes to understand their intentions.

“I cannot be intimidated because no one can kill me, my life is in the hands of God Almighty because I know that I am doing the right thing”.

Ortom also lamented that the deteriorated security situation in the country, particularly the activities of the Fulani herders, is currently beyond the Federal Government.

“The issue is currently beyond the Federal Government and even the President, Muhammadu Buhari,” he said.

He, however, said everyone must come together to tackle the challenges confronting the entire nation.

Court remands girl,12, for eloping with Chikere, 38, because ‘she enjoys sex’

*Mother abandons case after allegedly collecting N40,000 from the accused.

A  Magistrate Court sitting in Port Harcourt has remanded a 12- year- old girl, (name withheld) in the Port Harcourt Remand Home for telling the court that she willingly eloped and consented to sexual relations with a 38-year-old Alfred Chikere for over a month.

The accused, Alfred Chikere was sent to prison custody until his bail application is entertained for eloping with the 12- year- old girl.

Chikere who was arraigned before  Senior Magistrate  C.J. Digwe on Tuesday 23rd March 2021, “For abducting a twelve year old girl with intent to have carnal knowledge.”

Chikere  had allegedly  abducted the 12- year- old girl who just turned 13 some days ago defiled her throughout the period of one month, while the mother of the girl and Police were searching for her.

But it was gathered that a neighbor saw her and took her to Olu-Obansijo Police Station and the mother was informed before Alfred was arrested.

He was charged under section 361 of the Criminal Code Act cap 37. Vol 2 of Rivers state.

The prosecutor, ASP Omurujia said the offence is punishable under section 361, instead of a sexual offence of rape that was the complaints against the accused.

But controversies are now trailing the trial of the case.

According to the prosecutor,  the girl clearly told the court that the accused was not her first boyfriend and that she willingly went to the man’s house to stay because she likes sex.

This, according to the Prosecutor was why the accused was charged under section 361 of the law.

Aside this, the girl’s mother had also reportedly collected N40,000  to discontinue with the case, until an activist, John Millar, who is handling the matter informed the Center for Basic Rights And Accountability Campaign.

Center For Basic Rights informed the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nnamdi Omoni, who directed that the case should be transferred to State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department(SCIID), Port Harcourt, since the matter is under the jurisdiction of the state.

However, the mother has also refused to go to SCIID to make a formal report of the case.

But Police charged Chikere to court for abduction and defilement based on medical report which established case of defilement against the accused.

Activists also contended that there is no law that says a suspect cannot be charged to court without a formal complainant.

Activists and lawyers are however raising dust over the charge against Alfred Chikere, while noting that any girl who is not up to 18 as such cannot give sexual consent under the Nigerian law.

Also, the Rivers State Government has domesticated the Child Rights Act 2003 which indicated that the girl cannot be the girlfriend of the accused.

Activists also pointed out that Nigeria doesn’t have the Romeo and Juliet Law also known as the Close-To-Age Exception.

“The law makes sure that even if a child has consensual sex, in cases where the age of consent is 15 or 16, the person they engage in must not be a certain years older than them. For most countries it is 2 years – meaning that if a child of 15 years old is having sex, it shouldn’t be with anybody older than 17 years.

“In simpler terms, you have laws that protect children of different ages. There is a law for the abuse of children lower than 11. There is one for the exploitation and trafficking of children of 13 or lower than 13 years of age,” said an activist.

Tuberculosis kills ‘over 162,000’ Nigerians annually

The Nigerian Thoracic Society (NTS) says tuberculosis kills over 162, 000 people in the country annually..

Prince Ele, president of NTS, said no fewer than 430, 000 people fall ill with the disease in the country every year.

He said tuberculosis remains the world’s deadliest infectious killer and global efforts to combat the disease had saved millions of lives in Nigeria and globally since 2000.

Ele lamented that in spite of strong commitments made by world leaders, all efforts to end the disease had been overtaken as countries grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said the theme of World TB Day 2021, ‘The Clock is ticking’, was quite apt, considering the current global health and economic challenges.

The NTS president urged the government at all levels in the country and other world leaders to ensure that TB receives the necessary attention as the world’s number one infectious killer disease.

“We in the Nigerian Thoracic Society are not oblivious of the current challenges our health authorities are contending with due to COVID-19,” he said.

“We encourage full participation of our members in all local awareness campaign; we emphasise the need to constantly observe all COVID-19 preventive protocols.”

There will be no 2023 if Buhari does not restructure Nigeria – Adebanjo

Leader of the Pan-Yoruba Socio-Cultural Organisation, Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo has said there will be no 2023 if President Muhammadu Buhari did not restructure Nigeria.

He said Buhari must restructure Nigeria before any election could take place.

Adebanjo stated that the president could not keep this country together under the obnoxious 1999 Constitution.

“There is no 2023 in my own diary. Get that straight. If he does not restructure, that is the end of Nigeria. He must restructure this country before any election.

“He can’t keep this country together under this obnoxious constitution. Who is he deceiving? He controls the court. He controls the tribunal.

“He rigs the election and heads to the tribunal and the Supreme Court which he dictates to,” Adebanjo said in an interview with Tribune.

He said Afenifere once supported Buhari because of restructuring, which he had now failed to do.

“I have no personal grudge against Buhari. The military, who gave us the constitution, have gone back to their barracks. I want you to emphasise this: for some of the misguided intelligentsia among them and among our people, I have repeatedly said that this constitution is a fraudulent document.

“The military made it in 1966. They have not rebutted that. I have said it publicly that if Buhari truly loves this country, why is he opposed to restructuring? Why is he hesitant? It is this restructuring our founding fathers: the Sardauna, Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Tafawa Balewa, Aminu, Oyibo Ojigwe, all agreed to at independence in 1960.

“Is he more Fulani than the Sardauna? Is he more intelligent than our founding fathers? I even challenged Femi Adesina and Garba Shehu, who are defending all the nonsense the government is doing.

“The confusion in this country today is because the people refused to address the issue we are talking about.

When we said they are more corrupt, it is not a case of just blackmailing them. One of the reasons we supported Buhari in 2007 was when we thought he was going to do restructuring,” he said.
