94-year-old Harriette Thompson becomes the oldest woman to run a half-marathon

This year, the goal for Harriette Thompson was to become the oldest woman to complete a half-marathon, two years after she became the oldest woman to finish a marathon in San Diego.

She’s 94 — and she did it. She really did it, cranking out the 13.1 miles at a pace of just over 17 minutes per mile and finishing in an unofficial time of 3 hours, 42 minutes and 56 seconds.

The petite lady undeterred by her latest cancer treatments, was back on the starting line Sunday in the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon.

“This year I really couldn’t train too much because I had an operation in July for my leg,” the grandmother from Charlotte, who has survived squamous cell carcinoma and oral cancer, said in an email. “They had to take some skin from my thigh and graft it into my leg where I had a big scar from radiation. … My training started several months ago when I could start walking again. I did a couple 5Ks and [an] 8K. My son Brenny and I went for eight miles the other day. I’m scared I won’t be able to last 13 miles, but I’ll make a stab.”

Thompson, who took up running when she was 76 and decided “I can walk a marathon,” is also motivated by the knowledge that her efforts have raised over $100,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This year her effort has raised $15,000.

REVEALED: 5.5m Nigerians have become unemployed since 2015

Approximately 5.5 million Nigerians have become unemployed in the past two years of the current administration, figures from the National Bureau of Statistics has revealed.

According to the latest unemployment report released by NBS, 351,015 Nigerians became  unemployed in the last quarter of 2016, bringing the total number of unemployed and underemployed persons to  28.58 million.

As at August 2016, 4.58 million Nigerians had become unemployed since the President Muhammadu Buhari administration took power.
That figured increased in the third quarter of 2016 to 5,134,913 as unemployment rate spiked to 13.9 percent.

But according to the latest NBS report, “In Q4 2016, the labour force population (i.e. those within the working age population willing, able and actively looking for work) increased to 81.15 million from 80.67 million in Q3 2016,representing an increase of 0.6% in the labour force during the quarter”.

“This means about 482,689 persons from the economically active population entered the labour force during the quarter.
“During the reference period, the number of unemployed in the labour force, increased by 351,015persons, resulting in an increase in the national unemployment rate to 14.2% in Q4 2016, slightly up from 13.9% in Q3,13.3% in Q2, 12.1% in Q1 2016,and 10.4% in Q4 2015″.

The Buhari administration promised  to create millions of job in 2016, but NBS figures show that the jobs created could not match the fresh entrants of the labour market.
It is worthy of note that 27.44 million persons within the economically active or working age population decided not to work for one reason or the other in Q4 2016.

There were a total of 28.58 million persons in the Nigerian labour force in Q4 2016, that were either unemployed or underemployed compared to compared to 27.12million in Q3, 26.06million in Q2 and24.5 million in Q1 2016. - TheCableNG

I didn’t kill my husband – Lawyer who allegedly stabbed husband to death in Ibadan SHOCKS the world

A lawyer identified as Yewande Oyediran, with the Oyo State Ministry of Justice, who is standing trial for allegedly stabbing her husband, Lowo, to death, has denied killing him.
The defendant claimed she had a misunderstanding with her France-based husband on February 2, 2017, when the it was Lowo that threatened to kill her, when the case came up again at an Oyo State High Court, Ring Road, Ibadan.

While being led in evidence by her lead counsel, Mr. Leye Adepoju, Oyediran said her husband sustained injuries when they had a disagreement and had to be treated in a hospital.
She explained that the fight was as a result of a call she received from a woman who claimed that she had a child for her husband.
She said, “My husband confirmed it and we quarrelled over it, but we settled the issue.
“However, after a few hours, he started hitting me with a plank. He was angry about the injuries and threatened to retaliate. I managed to escape, but he followed me outside with a knife.
“Our landlord helped me out of his grip. I rushed to our landlord’s flat with my husband hot in pursuit. Suddenly, I saw him fall on his back.
“I rushed back and tried to pull him up only to see blood gushing out of his neck. I shouted for help and the landlord and his wife, together with his son, and a doctor whose clinic was on our street, tried to apply first aid.
“My landlord and I went to our neighbour, Mrs. Olubunmi Onipede, to help me take him to a hospital.”
Asked if she was responsible for her husband death, Oyediran said, “I did not kill my husband. I love my husband, even if we quarrelled, it wouldn’t be to the point of death,” she replied.

Arsenal confirm Kolasinac arrival

Arsenal have confirmed Sead Kolasinac will join the club in the summer on a Bosman free transfer, their first capture of the transfer window.

The Gunners have announced he will sign a five-year contract and "subject to the completion of all regulatory processes, the defender will start pre-season training in July".

Kolasinac said: "It feels really good and I'm pleased to be here. Arsenal has a huge tradition and I followed the club as a young boy, in the days of Jens Lehmann and Thierry Henry."

Sky sources reported last month that the 23-year-old left-back was set to join the club after his contract at Schalke ended.

Everton, Manchester City and Milan also made offers to Kolasinac, but the defender chose a move to north London despite uncertainty over Arsene Wenger's future as manager, which has now been settled.

He has represented Germany at youth level, but decided in 2013 to play for Bosnia and Herzegovina, the country where his parents were born, and has a total of 17 caps.

Police: 100-plus reptiles found inside New York home

The SPCA says a Long Island home was found to be a real-life — and illegal — reptile house, with more than 100 of the animals crawling and slithering around the property.

Police in Nassau County found out about the reptile collection inside the Carle Place home because the owners reported a break-in at the address. WCBS-TV reports (http://cbsloc.al/2rwhnh3 ) many of the animals are banned in New York state and some, like a baby alligator and a boa constrictor, are considered extremely dangerous.

A Nassau county SPCA spokesman says the animals were in bad shape, and at least 10 were found dead in the house.

The reptiles —along with three dogs, a cat, a rabbit, and several fish — were transported to an animal sanctuary in Massachusetts for treatment.

Napoli want Pepe Reina to stay despite Newcastle interest

Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri wants Pepe Reina to stay at the club for the upcoming Serie A season despite interest from Newcastle United, talkSPORT reports.

Reina was Rafa Benitez’s first-choice goalkeeper during his time at Liverpool and Benitez reportedly wants to reunite with Reina once more and bring him to newly promoted Newcastle United.

When asked about the speculation linking Reina with a move away from the club, Napoli boss Sarri told TMW:
“He’s a great lad. I hope Reina remains our goalkeeper for a long time.”
Sarri went on to add:
“He’s fundamental also in the way he thinks. He’s a faithful man, who is loyal to the coach, and Pepe brings this feeling into the dressing room.”
Reina has established himself as Sarri’s first-choice keeper at Napoli but only has one year left to run on his contract.

Benitez has already sounded out Reina’s representatives as he tries to push through a deal for the Spaniard.

Benitez has signed Reina twice before as manager at both Liverpool and Napoli and is looking to bring Reina back to the Premier League again this summer.

Nigerian Father Of Three Stabbed To Death On The Street Of Canada

Nicholas Ozoechi Nwonye was a kind person who, even in the briefest of moments, left an indelible impression.

That’s how those who knew the victim of Friday’s deadly CTrain platform stabbing are remembering the 46-year-old father of three — killed in an attack police say was random and unprovoked.

“He was just such a treat to have there,” said Rhonda Hersak, an instructor at nearby Bow Valley College, where Nwonye was enrolled in the school’s practical nursing program.

“(He was) a very kind, empathetic individual. He smiled all the time.”

Indeed, Nwonye was on his way home from Hersak’s lecture hall when the deadly attack took place, at 6:45 p.m. on the westbound platform of the City Hall LRT station in downtown Calgary.

Stabbed in the chest and abdomen by a man he’d never met, Nwonye was rushed to hospital, where he later died.

The man accused in Nwonye’s death was caught by police shortly thereafter, arrested as he attempted to flee the scene in an eastbound train. Keeton Michel Gagnon, 39, has been charged with second-degree murder.

Nwonye only recently moved to Canada with his wife and three children from Nigeria, and was only four weeks into his studies when he died.

Hersak remembered Nwonye as a deeply spiritual man whose faith formed a large part of his life.

Being the only male in the class, Nwonye brought a unique insight, Hersak said — laughing as she described him being responsible for the creation of some “pleasant controversy” during in-class discussions.

Despite only being a student for a short time, Hersak said Nwonye made a definite impression, both on his fellow students and the faculty.

“He had an impact. He had a really big impact in the classroom,” she said.

“He will be missed in the classroom. I know this for a fact.”

Chelsea owner Abramovich helping former Russian coach, Slutsky with job hunt

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is helping Leonid Slutsky to find a job in England football, with the Russian strongly linked with the vacancy at Hull City.

The former Russia national team coach has been out of work ever since leaving CSKA Moscow in December, after winning three Russian Premier League titles in his seven years in charge.

Abramovich, who has owned Chelsea since his takeover in June 2003, sees him as a "project" to improve the reputation of Russian football., though, Slutsky he could soon resume his managerial career.

"He is my friend and he tries to help me in the situation," the 46-year-old Slutsky told the BBC.
"I have studied English and watched a lot of football matches. Not only Premier League, but also Championship and League One.

"He had an academy in Russia, invested a lot for infrastructure in Russian football. He built about 300 artificial pitches and was sponsor of the Russian national team. Today, his project in Russian football is me."

Hull have been seeking a new head coach since the departure of Marco Silva following the club's relegation from the Premier League, with the Portuguese succeeding Walter Mazzarri at Watford, and Slutsky is reportedly a front-runner.

EU commits 50 million euros to combat militants in West Africa

The European Union committed 50 million euros ($56 million) on Monday to help the countries of West Africa's Sahel region set up a multinational force to combat Islamist militant groups.
The vast, arid zone has in recent years become a breeding ground for jihadist groups - some linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State - that European nations, particularly France, fear could threaten Europe if left unchecked.
In a statement released during the visit to Mali of its foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, the European Union said its support would help the so-called G5 Sahel countries of Chad, Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali and Mauritania establish a regional task force.
"The stability and development of the Sahel region are crucial not only for Africa but also for Europe," Mogherini said in the statement. "We are neighbours and what happens on one of our continents has an impact on the other."
Last year, the Sahel nations proposed establishing special units, each composed of around 100 well-trained soldiers, which would be deployed in areas where jihadist groups are known to operate. [nL8N1J00BC]

They would complement the efforts of regular armed forces, the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Mali and France's Operation Barkhane, which has around 4,000 troops deployed across the five Sahel countries.

France intervened in 2013 to drive back militants who had seized northern Mali a year earlier. However, militants continue to attack security forces and civilian in Mali and its neighbours.
French President Emmanuel Macron, who visited Mali on his first trip outside of Europe last month after his election, has reaffirmed Paris's commitment to the region and called on Germany and other European nations to ramp up military and development aid.

Irish mosque attacked during Ramadan prayers

He said they were remembering Allah at the time.
Nobody was injured in the incident but Mr Noonan said many members are "upset and shaken".

FG begs Indonesia to spare the lives of Nigerians on death row

The Federal Government on Monday pleaded with the government of Indonesia to commute the death penalty passed on Nigerians in the country’s prison, to life imprisonment.

Foreign Affairs Minister Geoffrey Onyeama, made the plea in a joint communique issued at the end of bilateral meeting between the minister and Mrs Retno Marsudi his counterpart from Indonesia.

He said,
“on consular issues, Nigeria recognises the drugs emergency situation in Indonesia and pleaded for commuting death penalty to life imprisonment.”

This is not the first time that the government is pleading on behalf of Nigerians on death row in Indonesia.

Available report shows that FG had pleaded so many times for Nigerian on Death row in Indonesia. in May 2012, February 2013, March 2015 and more recently in July 2016 Nigeria sought for clemency for its citizens in Indonesia.

However all pleas fell on deaf ears as Indonesia always goes on to execute the Nigerians citing its strict policy on drugs.

There are about 50 Nigerians serving various jail terms for different offences in Indonesia with about 11 of them on death row

Human Rights organisation, Legal Defence and Assistance Project (LEDAP) had called on the federal government to boost its efforts in fighting for Nigerians on death row in foreign countries.

The organisation stated that no fewer than 300 Nigerians were currently on death row in prisons across Asian countries since 2016.

Apprentice Connives With Herbalist To Kidnap Boss' Son

A middle-aged man, identified as Obinna Stephen, has been arrested by the Ondo State Police Command for his alleged involvement in the kidnap of an eight-year-old boy in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The victim is a child of Stephen’s boss, Mr. Ezechiefor Chuks, who is a trader in electrical materials in Arakale Market, Akure, while the suspect is an apprentice.

The suspect was paraded on Friday at the police headquarters in Akure along with three other suspects, among whom is a herbalist, identified as Eze Ifeanyi.

Other two suspects are Joel Carol and Christopher Anthony.

After the abduction of the boy, the suspects reportedly demanded N50m ransom before they were arrested by operatives of the state police command on Omoniyi Estate in Akure.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mrs. Hilda Harrison, said Stephen planned with other suspects to kidnap his boss’ son at Don Bosco Catholic Church, Akure.

She said, “On receipt of the kidnap report, we swung into action and got the suspect (Stephen) arrested.

“Upon interrogation, he confessed to the complicity in the crime. Further enquiries led to the arrest of other suspects.”

According to the commissioner, the kidnap victim was rescued unhurt and united with his family.

She said some “dangerous items” were recovered from the suspects, including one locally-made pistol, one berretta pistol, some live ammunition, and two live cartridges.

She also said the suspects would be arraigned in court at the conclusion of investigation. - Punch

Colombian garbage man builds library from discarded books

Emptying the bins of Colombia's capital, Jose Alberto Gutierrez one day found a copy of the classic novel "Anna Karenina," and kept it.
That was 20 years ago -- and the garbage man continued to collect Bogota's discarded books, amassing 25,000 in a free library, swelled by donations.

"I realized that people were throwing books away in the rubbish. I started to rescue them," Gutierrez, a stocky, grey-haired man of 54, told AFP.
He never got past primary school as a student, but is now dubbed "The Lord of the Books," in demand from schools across the country.

- Epic undertaking -
That first copy of Tolstoy was soon joined by "The Little Prince," "Sophie's World," "The Iliad" and various novels by Colombian master Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
Gutierrez's neighbors started coming round to borrow books to help their children with schoolwork.

"There was a lack of them in our neighborhood, so we started to help."
Now a whole floor of his house, on a hill in the working class Nueva Gloria district of the capital, is taken up by stacks of books.
Along with wife Luz Mery Gutierrez and their three children, Gutierrez opened it as a free library in 2000.

Volunteers joined in, word spread, and the garbage man found himself invited to international book fairs in Santiago, Monterrey as well as in the capital.

- Spreading the words -

Where once he supplied the library by rescuing books from the street, now most his stock comes from donations. Aside from donations, Gutierrez covers any further expenses from his own pocket.

"We have a blessed curse upon us," he said. "The more books we give away, the more come to us."
The collection got so big that they had to halt the children's reading sessions they held in the house, for lack of space.
Instead they started traveling around the country to deliver free books to hundreds of poor and remote districts.

- Books for peacetime -
Gutierrez says his mother gave him a love of literature by reading cartoons to him in the country shack where he grew up.
"It was she who enlightened me," he says.
Having not finished school as a boy, he is now, well into middle age, studying for his school leaver's exam.

Among the people across the vast jungle nation who have contacted him to ask for books was a fighter in the FARC leftist rebel group.
Its 7,000 members are gathered in demobilization zones to disarm under a peace accord signed last year with the government.

The FARC member asked Gutierrez to send books for the fighters. They will have to learn and train for new jobs once they lay down their weapons and make the transition to civil life.
"Books transformed me, so I think books are a symbol of hope for those places," Gutierrez said. "They are a symbol of peace." - AFP

Inmate planned to escape prison in box, buried in sawdust

An inmate at a maximum-security prison claimed he repeatedly practiced a daring escape plan involving a coffin-like box hidden under tons of sawdust and that guards never noticed what he was up to.

Gordon "Woody" Mower, who is serving a life sentence without parole for killing his parents two decades ago, told The Post-Standard of Syracuse (http://bit.ly/2svJLOB) that he practiced escaping Auburn Correctional Facility 50 times before guards discovered his plan in April 2015 — two months before two convicted killers cut their way out of a different maximum-security prison in upstate New York.

Mower said his plan involved being buried alive in a bottomless 3-foot by 4-foot wooden box under a big mound of sawdust produced by the prison's woodworking shop, where furniture is made. The sawdust is hauled away regularly in a tractor-trailer by a local farmer who uses it as horse bedding. Mower said the plot failed when another inmate tipped off guards.

The newspaper reported Monday that the planned escape was confirmed by prison records sent to Mower's lawyers at Prisoners Legal Services. Karen Murtagh, executive director of the Albany-based agency, said Mower approved the records release to the newspaper.

The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision neither confirmed nor denied details in Mower's story. Thomas Mailey, a department spokesman, said the agency "continues to review its policies and procedures and make significant improvements to enhance the safety and security in New York's correctional facilities."

Mower was 18 when he used a .22-caliber rifle to murder his parents in March 1996 inside their home in rural Richfield Springs. Mower said he hatched a plan while serving his sentence at Auburn, the state's oldest prison at 199 years old. He has since been transferred to the maximum-security prison in Elmira.

Mower claimed he compiled information on the routines of prison guards overseeing the farmer's weekly visits. He said another inmate who helped design the scheme would use a small tractor with a front-end loader to put the box on the farmer's truck, then cover the box with tons of sawdust.
Mower said he would have worn googles and a protective mask from another prison workshop. After the truck left the prison, he said he planned to pull himself free from under the sawdust. He said he was injured several times during dry runs of the escape when the box collapsed under the weight of the sawdust, but the guards never noticed anything unusual.

"Where were the corrections officers?" Mower told The Post-Standard. "How did we build all this stuff, get buried alive and nobody sees or says anything?"
Mower said another inmate alerted guards to the plan on April 3, 2015.

On June 6, 2015, Richard Matt and David Sweat escaped the Clinton Correctional Facility in northern New York by using tools provided by a prison employee to cut their way through their prison cell wall and gain access to the prison's underground infrastructure. Matt was fatally shot by a U.S. Border Patrol officer three weeks later. Sweat was rearrested and wounded by a state trooper two days after that.

Their escape, which touched off the largest manhunt in New York history, was even more embarrassing for state prison officials when it was revealed that prison tailor shop employee Joyce Mitchell provided Matt and Sweat with tools that a guard unwittingly delivered to the inmates. Matt and Sweat also were able to practice their escape without guards noticing. -AP

Pastor Arrested For Operating Baby Factory

Police detectives attached to the Ariaria Police Division, Aba, Abia State, have arrested one Christopher Tochukwu for allegedly running a baby factory on Faulks Road, Aba.

It was learnt that Tochukwu, who claimed to be a pastor, converted a one-storeyed building, where he conducted his church services and had a clinic, to a hideout where pregnant teenage girls were kept.

A police source told Punch Metro that the detectives, acting on a tip-off, rescued three pregnant girls and another girl whose baby had been sold to an unidentified buyer.

The source added that the team also arrested Tochukwu, while a two-week-old baby was rescued and taken to a motherless babies’ home.

One of the girls,  Imeabo Udo, said she was taken to the clinic by a young man who promised to help her take care of her two-year-old baby.

She explained that on getting to the clinic, her baby boy was taken away from her and sold to an unidentified woman.

For Jane Ikechukwu, Blessing and Gift, their stories were not different.

They claimed that they were taken to the clinic by unknown persons for antenatal care, but were forced to stay back at the clinic for a period of over one month.

According to Blessing, Tochukwu took turns to rape them one, while they were locked up in different rooms in the building.

She said, “It was while he was raping one of us that the girl fought and injured him with a broken glass. It was the girl that escaped through the window and alerted the police.”

Tochukwu, who claimed to be a nurse by training, however, denied raping the girls.

He said he had no arrangement to sell their babies after birth, adding that he was just keeping them to pay their bills after treating them.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adeleye Oyebade, confirmed the arrest of the suspect and the rescue of the victims.

He said investigation was ongoing, adding that the police were on the trail of other culprits on the run.

Man City close in on Bertrand

Manchester City have made a significant step closer in their pursuit of Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand after Monaco slapped a £40m price tag on Benjamin Mendy.

Sky Sports News HQ understands that Bertrand, along with his fellow England full-back Kyle Walker, could be City players within a fortnight.
Sky sources reported in April that Bertrand and Tottenham's Walker were both in City's top-five on their list of targets this summer - and it is understood some aspects of the deal for Bertrand have already been agreed.

The deal would see the full-back more than double the £55,000 a week he is presently on at St Mary's.
Once again, the summer window looks likely to be a difficult time for Southampton with Virgil van Dijk looking increasingly likely to be heading for Liverpool and Dusan Tadic linked with a move to Italy.

City boss Pep Guardiola, meanwhile, is desperate to upgrade his options at full-back following the departures of Pablo Zabaleta, Gael Clichy, and Bacary Sagna.

Guardiola is a known admirer of Monaco's flying left-back Mendy, although reports on Tuesday morning suggest the two clubs are still some way from agreeing a deal - with Monaco demanding £40m.

Qatar Airways suspends flights to UAE, Egypt, Bahrain

Qatar Airways has cancelled flights to Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates from Tuesday until further notice, the airline said on its website, a day after it had suspended flights to Saudi Arabia.

The airline said passengers holding a confirmed Qatar Airways ticket to any of the four countries between June 5 and July 6 are permitted to rebook their flights up to 30 days after their current departure date.

Qatar Airways said its offices will continue to operate as normal in affected countries until further notice.

On Monday, EgyptAir, flydubai and Bahrain's Gulf Air joined Etihad and Emirates in saying they would suspend all flights to and from Doha.

The move came after Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain severed diplomatic relations with Qatar in a coordinated move, accusing it of support for Islamist militants and Iran.

Anthony Joshua's rematch with Wladimir Klitschko "is happening" says promoter Eddie Hearn

Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko proposed rematch "is happening"according to promoter Eddie Hearn.

The pair fought in a classic encounter at Wembley in April, with the Brit securing an 11th round victory in front of 90,000 fans, leaving an instant appetite for a rematch.

Klitschko holds the rights for a rematch and will meet his manager Bernd Boente this week, where a rematch is expected to be agreed.
"We’re looking at all the potential sites for the rematch. It’s not really a case of them having to let us know by a certain date. For us, it’s happening,” Hearn told Boxing News .

“Until [Klitschko] turns round and says ‘no, I’m retiring,’ we’re full steam ahead. At the moment all I can tell you is that it’s happening because we haven’t heard otherwise.

“Bernd [Boente, Klitschko’s manager] has got a meeting with him this week. The number of offers we’ve had come in from other sites means the money’s so big, I can’t see him not taking it. Even away from the money I think he wants it, I think he looks back and thinks he had Josh in the fifth or sixth. A lot of people gave him a lot of props for it, so why not?”

Anthony Joshua back in boxing gym "getting ready" for possible Wladimir Klitschko rematch
While Kubrat Pulec is the IBF mandatory challenger, Hearn has already applied for an exemption in order to facilitate a rematch against Klitschko, with a decision due this week. Hearn insists that Joshua would fight Pulev after a Klitschko rematch.

The promoter has also revealed he has offers to stage the bout from all over the world.
Anthony Joshua: I don't want my son to be a boxer, I want him to be better than me
“We’re looking at America, Nigeria, Dubai or Cardiff,” he continued.

“Cardiff isn’t the frontrunner financially. The money we’re getting offered from other sites is huge, but that comes with problems. It’s a new market for us, go and do an event in Lagos sounds great but operationally it’s very difficult. You have to look at money, is it there? Is it secure?

“Financially there’s much better offers than Cardiff but we know the UK is solid, we’ve prepared here before, it’s the same time zone, so we don’t really want to rock the boat.”

Cheick Tiote died in hospital after training collapse

Former Ivory Coast international Cheick Tiote died in hospital on Monday after collapsing during a training session, his Chinese club Beijing Enterprises said.

The Chinese second flight club confirmed his death at the age of 30 on its Weibo social media account, saying the former Twente Enschede and Newcastle United midfielder had "fainted without any warning" during training.

"He was rushed to hospital immediately. However, all revival measures proved ineffective and he died around 7pm on June 5, 2017. The club has already contacted his family," it read.
"Since joining the team, he had made an outstanding contribution to the club and won praise from the club, the coaching team and his team mates with his superb skills and professionalism.

"Beijing BG football club expresses our deepest sorrow following Mr Tiote's passing."
Former team mates and managers took to social media to mourn the loss of the latest high-profile African player to have collapsed and died while playing football.
Newcastle United, where Tiote played for seven years before moving to China, said the club was "devastated" at the news, while manager Rafa Benitez spoke of his "sadness" at the death of "a true professional ... and above all, a great man".
Former England manager Steve McLaren, who coached Tiote at Twente and Newcastle, spoke of Tiote's competitiveness.

"I knew him first as a young player at Twente. He was the toughest player I've ever seen," he told the BBC.
"On the field and in training he was such a competitor. He wanted to win every game, kick every player and win every tackle.

"He was a winner. I just can't believe it. Some days we would have to pull him out of training because he was such a ferocious competitor, such a winner. He was a warrior and could play too."
Tiote grew up playing football barefoot on the streets of his hometown of Yamoussoukro before moving to Europe with Belgian club Anderlecht in 2005.

He moved to Twente in 2008 and was part of the side which won the Eredivisie title in 2010. He played at the 2010 and 2014 World Cup and was a member of the Ivory Coast squad which won the 2015 African Cup of Nations.

A combative defensive midfielder, Tiote's more than 130 appearances for Newcastle featured many yellow cards but only one goal.
It was a spectacular effort, though, a left-footed volley from well outside the penalty area two minutes from time which secured Newcastle's comeback from 4-0 down to secure a 4-4 draw against Arsenal in February 2011.

Tiote's move to Beijing earlier this year was his second attempt to cash in on the riches on offer in the Chinese Super League after holding talks with Shanghai Shenhua in 2016.

McLaren said Tiote's motivation was to provide for an extended family which, he told one interviewer, included nine brothers and sisters.
"It was his dream to play in China and I was so delighted for him when it happened," McLaren added.

"He loved playing football to look after his family. All the relatives, uncles, aunts, grandparents, they all relied on him to look after them."

United could land Rodriguez for €55m

Manchester United could land Real Madrid playmaker James Rodriguez for just €55m this summer, according to reports in France.

It’s claimed by RMC Sport, as covered in a report by GFFN tonight, that Real could look to offload Rodriguez in a cut-price deal, and United are well known to have shown their interest.

The Colombian is somewhat out of favour at the Bernabeu and it was a bold decision from Zinedine Zidane to totally exclude him from his Champions League winning match day squad.

It’s stated that Florentino Perez, the current president of Real Madrid, has held “concrete discussions” with Manchester United over a potential summer move, but Inter Milan have also negotiated a possible transfer too.

PSG are also cited with interest, but it seems as though United have expressed the most interest in landing the attacking midfielder this summer.
Real were thought to have been seeking €70m for Rodriguez, but it looks as though they may be forced into a compromise.

Van Dijk Snubs Manchester City for Liverpool

For the past few weeks, Manchester City was pursuing 25-year-old Virgil Van Dijk. They were in an advanced position in terms of his transfer.

The Reds have been locked for several weeks in a battle with Manchester City and Chelsea over the Southampton defender, who has become one of the Premier League’s most sought-after players. But this week Van Dijk declares that Anfield is his preferred destination. The initial fee for Virgil van Dijk expected to be around £50m with potential add-ons of another £10m. He will be offered the as Manchester City’s contract offer of the £200K-per week. The 6 ft 4 inches tall Centre Back will be a boost for the Liverpool and a great addition to the defense alongside Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip.

After a trophyless season, Manchester City is aiming for its rejuvenation for the next season. Guardiola already brought Portugal’s midfield sensation Bernardo Silva from Monaco and another Monaco fullback Benjamin Mendy deal is almost done. Transfer of Virgil Van Dijk might be the final piece of the puzzle. But recent snub from Van Dijk might be a huge blow for Pep Guardiola to fulfill his targets.

Former Celtic man Virgil Van Dijk joined The Saints in 2015 for a reported £13 million transfer fee. He made 55 appearances for Southampton and kept 17 clean sheets. He also scored 4 goals for Southampton. Van Dijk has won more tackles & aerial duels combined (327) than any other centre-backs since joining the Premier League.

Van Dijk got his first call up in the Netherland National team in the qualifier match against Kazakhstan in 2015. Since then he made 12 appearances and now he is an indispensable part of his national team.

Van Dijk left Groningen for Celtic in 2013 for a fee of £11.5M. There he won 2 Scottish Premier League titles, made 111 appearances for the club scoring 15 goals for them. He was also named as PFA Scotland Player of the Year in both of his seasons.

Rejecting a proven coach like Pep Guardiola for Jurgen Klopp‘s project in Liverpool. Sounds like a very bold move? Let’s see if Virgil Van Dijk can provide a fruitful season for Liverpool next season.

Mom arrested after 3-year-old boy shoots 2-year-old brother

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A woman has been arrested after a 3-year-old shot and critically injured his 2-year-old brother, CBS Denver reports.

"They wanted to play cops and robbers," said the brothers' 14-year-old sister, who did not want to be identified. "It was pretty traumatic."

Police in Colorado Springs arrested the boys' 30-year-old mother, Monica Abeyta, on suspicion of felony child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury. The sister says the gun belongs to the mother.

Officers rushed to the 4300 block of Driftwood Drive at 1:30 p.m. Saturday to investigate the shooting.
The sister recalled what police told her about the incident.

"They said that it was in her purse and that he got it out of there," she said. "You (would) think that mother would have the instinct to take care of her child. I guess she just doesn't have that."
