Asari Dokubo asks herdsmen to leave Southern Nigeria

Ex-Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo, has called on South-South and South-Easterners to return home following threats from Coalition of Northern Groups, asking the herdsmen in South-South to also leave the zone.

Asari spoke on the heels of the Coalition of Northern Groups and the Northern Elders Forum, NEF, and the gruesome killing of  Mrs. Funke Olakunrin, daughter of the leader of Afenifere, last week.

Members of the Northern Elders Forum and the Coalition of the Northern Groups have asked Fulani herdsmen to leave the southern part of Nigeria.

They said the herdsmen should return to the North where their (herdsmen) safety and that of their property could be guaranteed.

The northern elders and the youths said they were worried that some southern leaders had allegedly openly threatened war against the Fulani herdsmen.

Speaking during a meeting with leaders of Niger Delta states, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Friday, Dokubo said the people of the Niger Delta today, resolved to be part and parcel of the actualization the United States of Biafra.

In his words, “What has brought us here today is the dark cloud that is gathering. In 1967, we did not ask for war, war was imposed on us and millions of our people were killed. Our properties were destroyed and so many people until today are carrying the scars of that imposed war.

“Our people have not gone to Kano, Kebbi, Sokoto, Borno to ask that land be forcefully given to us or that our resources should be used to give us properties in the north.

“But northern organizations and northern individuals have come up to say we must surrender our land to them to create colonies on our land. Are you going to allow that?

“We will not surrender one grain of sand of our sacred land to anybody. We will stand on our land and wait for you to come and carry out your threat and inshallah by the grace of God we will defeat you.

“We have heard that you have called your people to come back home. They should all go, we will assist them to leave (because) this is what we have been looking for all along.

“We call on our people, Igbo, Ibibio, Ikwerre, Ijaw return back home. If anything happens to you and these coward spines on you, you would have yourself to blame. We would not continue to risk our integrity and our pride because of you, return home now.

“We extend a hand of fellowship to our brothers in the middle belt who are suffering the same pain and deprivation as we do. We are with you in your hours of grief and pain and we will stand with you to the end.

“To our Yoruba brothers in Afenifere, and the leader of Afenifere, whose daughter has been gruesomely murdered by these Gambari invaders, we condole with you but this is the price we have to pay to wake up.”

CBN to use mosques, churches for financial literacy

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says it will partner with churches and mosques to improve the financial knowledge of citizens.

Kofo Salam-Alada, the bank’s director, consumer protection department, said the apex bank has organised outreach programmes with faith-based organisations.

Financial Literacy otherwise called financial education is a possession of skill or knowledge which allows an individual to make informed decisions with his resources.

Financially literate people have the ability to efficiently use resources for self-sufficiency and have the capacity to distinguish between needs and wants.

He said the CBN decided to use such religious organisations because of the spiritual and religious nature of most Nigerians.

“CBN is now partnering with faiths based organisations like churches and Islamic organisations on the Train-the-Trainers to promote this programme,” he told NAN in an interview.

“We are developing a lot of materials on this and we have also trained a lot of master trainers on this project.

“Financial literacy is important because it helps individuals to make investment decisions and equally help in planning for retirement.”

Salam-Alada said being financially literate is different from acquiring normal education as some people were educated but financially illiterate.

According to him, CBN is ready to work with any organisation willing to set up an in house financial literacy programme.

He further stated that when financial literacy was achieved, it would help to boost financial inclusion in the country.

Why HIV/AIDS test must be free for pregnant women

Mr Ikenna Nwakamma, 1st Co Chairman, Coalition of Civil Society Network on HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (CCSNHAN) on Saturday called for compulsory HIV test for pregnant women in all hospitals.

Nwakamma told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that imposition of user fees by healthcare providers was responsible for staggered HIV screening of pregnant women.

He explained that about 60 per cent of healthcare delivery in Nigeria was through the private health providers.

“We have been telling everyone that HIV test is free; we forget that it is only free in few places.

“Because of user fee imposed on the test, the women who cannot afford the test will not get it,” Nwakamma said.

He expressed worry that a good number of women in the country had been left un-screened before labour because of user fees.

According to him, even in some supported health facilities, pregnant women are asked to pay for these tests and that affects access and uptake of the services by them.

Nwakamma also blamed the problem on the patronage of traditional birth attendants by some pregnant women.

He expressed fears over continued spread of the virus if testing for pregnant women was not made compulsory in all hospitals irrespective of class, status and location.
