China sent mysterious parcels to Americans – US

The United States Government has sounded the alarm over mysterious parcels dispatched to its nationals from China.

US Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that hundreds of Americans received the seed packs in their mail.

Authorities have warned recipients not to plant them.

There are fears that some may be invasive species and could destroy native plants and insects.

A USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service member, Osama El-Lissy, said officials found 14 plant types included in the seed packets.

He disclosed that species identified include mustard, cabbage, morning glory, hibiscus and roses.

Others are herbs like mint, sage, rosemary and lavender.

In a statement, USDA said no evidence yet, “other than a ‘brushing scam’ where people receive unsolicited items from a seller who then posts false customer reviews to boost sales.”

The agency said it is currently collecting the seed from recipients and will test contents to determine if they contain anything that could be of concern to US agriculture or the environment.

The parcels mailed to addresses across America and Canada had shipping information printed in Chinese.

China has assured its mail service was working with the US Postal Service to have some of the packages shipped back for analysis.

The foreign ministry, however, claimed that the address labels on them were forged.

Zidane voted world’s best football manager

French newspaper L’Equippe has voted Real Madrid boss, Zinedine Zidane, the best manager in the world.

He beats Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola to the title.

The 48-year-old Zidane won a La Liga title, three Champions Leagues, two UEFA Super Cups, two Club World Cups and a Spanish Super Cup during his first spell at Real Madrid before he surprisingly left the club in 2018.

He was re-appointed within just ten months.

He has gone on to win another La Liga title and another Super Cup, to continue his remarkable record with Madrid.

Klopp and Guardiola join Zidane in the top three for their remarkable achievements.

There was no room for Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho, who L’Equipe described as having a “fading image and magic.”

On Zidane, the newspaper wrote: “He is a coach who has experienced only one club, and quite rarely defeat.

“A coach who did what none of his predecessors did, win three Champions Leagues in a row (2016, 2017, 2018), who was able to return to the footsteps of his own glory and question everything to become a new Spanish champions with Real Madrid last month.

“Guardiola has something else, his dogma, his permanent research, the virtuosity of his collective game, dizzying constructions, his consistency (198 points in two seasons from 2017 to 2019), but he does not have everything, and chooses his central defenders as his attackers or midfielders.’

The newspaper said Klopp has “charisma” and described him as the “fashionable man” and “favourite of many.”

Zidane faces an uphill task to win a fourth Champions League trophy.

Madrid and Guardiola’s Manchester City will clash on Friday in the second leg of their last-16 match. City are up 2-1 up from the first game in Spain.

Virgin Atlantic Airway has filed for bankruptcy, as the aviation industry continues to be ravaged by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Virgin Group airline filed for Chapter 15 bankruptcy in New York on Tuesday, marking the latest business casualty for the airline industry.

It is the second of billionaire Richard Branson’s aviation business to file for bankruptcy, months after Virgin Australia took a similar step.

Airlines have been one of the hardest hit by the global health crisis as borders were shut, flights were banned and passenger traffic shrank.

The London-based Virgin Atlantic, is owned 49% by Delta Air Lines.

According to Business Insider, Chapter 15 is a form of bankruptcy designed for cases involving multiple countries, providing a mechanism for foreign-based companies undergoing bankruptcy proceedings in their own country to access the US court system.

It effectively protects Virgin’s US assets from creditors as a UK court oversees claims.

Virgin Atlantic announced a £1.2billion ($1.57 billion) private rescue package in July but had not finalized the agreement.

The airline had also appealed unsuccessfully for a bailout from the British government.

Richard Branson, the Virgin Group founder offered his private island as collateral for a bailout or loan.

The airline said during a court hearing in London on Tuesday that it would effectively run out of cash in September, Bloomberg reported .

Tuesday’s US filing appeared to be linked to the London hearing, at which a judge gave the go-ahead for a meeting allowing creditors to vote on the restructuring plan.

Virgin has not entered administration, a form of bankruptcy in the UK, Business Insider reported.

Delta CEO Ed Bastian has said that Delta would not offer a cash injection to save Virgin from a bankruptcy restructuring.

UK foreign-ownership laws would prevent Delta or any other foreign investor from increasing its stake.

ICYMI: Soldiers, NOT Boko Haram, attacked my convoy, says Zulum

ICYMI: Soldiers, NOT Boko Haram, attacked my convoy, says Zulum
Babagana Zulum, governor of Borno state, says the attack on his convoy was carried out by soldiers.

On Wednesday, the governor’s convoy was attacked in Baga while on his way to some internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in Kukawa local government area of the state.

The attack was initially believed to have been carried out by Boko Haram insurgents but speaking with reporters, Zulum attributed it to a sabotage from the army.

“You heard what happened at Baga. It is a complete sabotage. The issue is not about the president. The soldiers and equipment are on ground. We have a total number of about 1,181 soldiers in Baga. I think the problem is in the command or control structure which has to be looked into,” Zulum said.

“I cannot end my interview without clearly stating what happened. As far as I am concerned, there was no Boko Haram inside the town yesterday. That was a serious shooting by the Nigerian armed forces who are residing in Baga. The situation is very embarrassing.

“I think we shall give them some sufficient time because Baga is very important. The shores of the Lake Chad provide employment opportunities to about 10 million people in the north-east.”

In January, he accused the troops of  extorting road users.
