Nigerian woman jailed for 21 years in UK
A court in United Kingdom on Thursday jailed Abosede Adeyinka, a Nigerian woman for 21 years over a failed attempt to kill a 90-year old widow and steal her £30,000.
The woman, 52, masked her face with a lace when she committed the crime in April.
She was said to have convictions dating back to the 1990s for offences of assault, burglary and theft from an employer.
According to Mailonline, Adeyinka attacked Pamela Batten, 90, with a knife and a hammer after her husband Ernest had hidden the cash in bags at their home in Yiewsley, west London.
Adeyinka was the carer for Batten’s husband Ernest from 2013 until his death in October last year, a court heard.
After Ernest passed away, Adeyinka went to the widow’s home and knocked her to the floor.
Mrs Batten told the court, “She tried to hit me with a hammer
“Nobody suggested it but I did wonder myself – I still wonder why.”
Following a trial at Blackfriars Crown Court, a jury convicted Adeyinka of attempted murder.
Adeyinka shook her head in disbelief at the verdicts were given and wept loudly as Judge Peter Clarke, QC, said she had shown ‘a complete lack of remorse’.
The Prosecutor, Kevin Barry, told the court the widow ‘was afraid to go home’ following her discharge from hospital and now needs a zimmer-frame to walk.
He said, “Before the attack, she felt lonely because her husband had died but she was not afraid like she is now, he said.
‘The hammer blows to her head have affected the vision in her right eye which is now blurry.
“Mrs Batten feels that she has changed after the attack. Before it, she was the sort of person who would try to make friends with anyone but now she is frightened if someone speaks to her.”
Jailing Adeyinka for 21 years Judge Peter Clarke, QC, said: “Pamela Batten was mentally sprightly and six months after his death she still had no idea that her husband had squirrelled away over £30,000 in cash around the house.”
“From what you did on 27 April there is every reason to believe that you knew more about that money than Mrs Batten did.
“You visited her about three times after her husband’s death and, although she had reservations about your motives, Mrs Batten was pleased to have the company even though her son religiously visited her every day.”
Clark added, “Although you were wearing a lace disguise over your face I am satisfied on her evidence that she called you by name.
“It was at that moment that you resorted to your second plan. You bundled that 90-year-old woman into her front hall and took out a seven-inch hammer from your handbag, smashing that lady’s skull with at least two blows.’
Speaking after the court hearing, investigating officer DC James Harbour said: “This was a vile and disgusting crime on a defenceless grandmother in her own home.
“There are so many factors that make this a wicked attack, including a victim who was 90 and the level of violence used. In view of the age of the victim and brutality of the attack, I am truly thankful that the victim has been able to recover.
“It is a credit to her that she was able to attend the trial in person and tell the court what had happened to her. I wish to pay tribute to her courage, resolve and integrity; a stark contrast to the behaviour of the defendant, who is now facing a lengthy term in prison.”
PL update : Arsene Wenger expects Sanchez to stay at Arsenal during the new year transfer deals
Wenger believes Alexis Sanchez will remain at Arsenal in January as speculation begins to mount over proposed renewed interest from Manchester City.
The club run the risk of losing Sanchez for free at the end of 2017-18 with his contract due to expire, prompting many to suggest the club could cash in if City return with another bid in the new year.
Ahead of the teams' Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, Wenger refuted suggestions Sanchez would be lacking the desire to perform and expressed his belief the forward would stay with the club beyond the January window.
"You say everybody thinks City will come in for Alexis – I am part of everybody and I don't think he will go," Wenger said.
"Do City need him? They have to decide that. But we need him here.
"I expect him to be motivated against City but that is always the case. One thing you cannot fault in Alexis Sanchez is his motivation. When he plays for Chile, he plays with passion that is in South America.
"It's the same for [previous club] Barcelona and Arsenal. He is happy when he is on the pitch and that is all he wants.
"Was he close to joining City? No. But at the end of the day, close or not does not matter. It does not have any influence. What is important is that, when you are somewhere and you have the opportunity to give your best, that is what you must do."
The Chile international looked set for a reunion with Pep Guardiola during the previous transfer window, but the Gunners' failure to land Thomas Lemar from Monaco reportedly persuaded Wenger to keep hold of his prized asset. - Goal
Update !!! I paid Evans N100m to secure my brother’s release -Witness tells court
A prosecution witness, Anselem Dunu, on Friday told an Ikeja High Court how billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, alias Evans refused to release his brother, Donatus Dunu despite paying him the sum of €223,000, equivalent of N100m.
Donatus, who is the Chairman of Maydon Pharmaceutical Limited, was kidnapped on February 14, 2017, by Evans and his gang.
The witness, Anselem Dunu, the elder brother of Donatus Dunu, told an Ikeja High Court that Evans did not release his brother even after collecting 223,000 Euros.
Dunu told the Justice Hakeem Oshodi -led court that his brother was in the kidnapper’s den for four months.
According to Dunu, during the period, the kidnappers through phone calls threatened him and demanded for 100 million Euros.
He said, “On the 14th of February I received a phone call from my younger brother, Innocent Dunu, informing me about my brother’s kidnap.
“We rushed to the Ilupeju Police Station where we reported the case. We were referred to SCID Panti where the CSP in charge told me that the pattern of kidnapping was similar to that of the notorious kidnapper, Evans.
“The CSP further told me to be strong adding that Evans would contact me in two weeks as it was his pattern, and that I should be strong because the kind of money they would ask us to bring can make me faint.
“After two weeks a private number called me and I heard my brother’s voice at the other end begging me to close all his bank accounts and give the kidnappers all the money. My brother’s voice was anxious and filled with pain. I told him that there was no way I could access his accounts since I was not a signatory. The call ended abruptly.
“I was contacted again after four days and my brother sounded more desperate, begging me not to allow him die in captivity.
“The kidnappers grabbed the phone from my brother and demanded for one million Euros, to which I replied that we were only able to raise N20m. The voice on the other end started saying, ‘thunder fire you. Go and get us our money’ and the call ended.
“I rallied round and managed to raise N60m which I informed the kidnappers when they called after three days. The kidnapper demanded for 1m Euros if I wanted to see my brother alive.
“The kidnapper threatened to kill me whenever I bring the money. He also insisted that I must be the one to bring the money. I could hear my brother’s voice in the background pleading for mercy and shouting, “please stop beating me.
“We were finally able to raise N100m which we changed into 223,000 Euros. They contacted me and I told them what we were able to raise. They thereafter told me they would contact me.
“They contacted me and I arranged with my cousin, Uche Okeagbu, to take the money to them. They demanded I give the phone to Uche, and instructed him to bring the money to Oshodi.
“We packaged the money in cellophane bags and Uche took it to them in Oshodi. After they collected the 223,000 Euros, they stopped calling.
“Sometimes in May, I got a call from my younger brother who told me that my brother Donatus had escaped from the kidnappers den.
“When we were finally reunited with him, he was in a very critical condition. He was emaciated. His beard was so bushy and white. In short, he looked like an early man.
“At the Bourdillon Police Headquaters the 4th defendant, Okuchukwu Nwachukwu, was paraded as the one that tipped off Evans about my brother.
“I know Nwachukwu very well. He is my very good friend and I fondly call him Congo. He apologised profusely when he saw me and told me that it was the devil and greed that pushed him into kidnapping.
“Evans was also paraded as the mastermind behind the kidnap. When Evans was asked why he chose my brother, he said it was a random act, adding that one of his boys was not feeling fine and had bought a drug manufactured by Maydon Pharmaceutical Limited. He also said when he checked the manufacturer’s address, he contacted Nwachukwu, who gave him details of my brother’s movements.”
After listening to Dunu’s testimony, Justice Oshodi, adjourned the matter till November 17 for continuation of trial. - Daily Post
