Over 1000 soldiers secretly buried in Maiduguri

Report: Over 1000 soldiers secretly buried in Maiduguri
Over 1,000 soldiers killed on the battlefront in the fight against insurgency were secretly buried in Maiduguri, Borno state, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

Quoting military sources, the newspaper said the number of soldiers buried in that manner could be higher than the figure.

It said on the eve of President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to Borno in November, army commanders secretly moved corpses of soldiers from a morgue to unmarked graves.

“When President Buhari visited the Maiduguri base in November, commanders rushed to bury bodies that had collected at the morgue from the recent attack on the base in Metele and several others, according to several soldiers at the base,” the report read.

“They moved the bodies from the morgue into the unmarked graves under cover of darkness.”

A soldier was quoted as saying: “We could see the headlamps and the torches of the engineering division digging the graves.”

The report said as the commanders prepared the base for the president’s arrival, they also drafted in additional medical staff to treat the dozens of wounded soldiers in the base’s hospital wards.

It said as soldiers tried to register complaints about their conditions when Buhari addressed them, the president pledged to do everything within his powers to continue empowering them.

The military authorities are reportedly trying to expand the secret graveyard.

“As the secret cemetery at the Maimalari barracks grows, the military has expanded the site into neighboring fields,” the report read.

Sarah James, a 50-year-old farmer, was quoted as saying: “The farmland has been fenced off so they can bury the forces.”

TheCable could not reach Sagir Musa, army spokesman, for reaction as of the time of this report. He neither answered calls nor replied a text message sent.

Anthony Joshua vs Andy Ruiz Jr: Details of rematch date, venue finally confirmed

Boxing promoter, Eddie Hearn has confirmed that Anthony Joshua’s rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr will take place at a neutral venue.

He also said that in the next 48 hours, Ruiz’s team will be alerted as to where this fight will take place.

According to Hearn, Cardiff is still the front-runner and also the favourite to host the rematch fight between the two boxers.

DAILY POST had reported that Ruiz never wanted an Anthony Joshua rematch in the UK.

Joshua’s world heavyweight title reign and unbeaten record were ended by a stunning defeat to Ruiz Jr in New York in June this year and Hearn has activated a clause to enforce an immediate second fight.

A number of British venues, including the Wembley Stadium, are being considered for a date in November or December.

“There are some other interesting options that would be quite iconic internationally, which does involve a lot of aggravation logistically, but does involve a spectacle that would be quite unique,” Hearn told Sky Sports News on Thursday.

“I keep saying this, but in the next 48 hours Andy Ruiz’s team will be alerted to where this fight will take place.

“Joshua is working hard to make sure he’s ready to win those belts back.”

“I have been speaking to Ruiz’s team this week, keeping them up to speed with where we’re going.

“They don’t want to come to the UK, they never have done. I think they used the Dillian Whyte saga as a little bit of a scapegoat in that decision as well, and we have to take that into consideration.

“Contractually we know our position, but we want to make sure we get the fight done. We want to respect Andy Ruiz, but we’ll decide where the venue is.

“A neutral venue, he would be a lot happier with. I think I can rule out America, right now. Cardiff is still the frontrunner, it’s still the favourite.”

EFCC secures final forfeiture of N150m plaza traced to Kwara govt accountant

The Ilorin zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday, secured the final forfeiture of “Asmau Plaza”, valued at about N150million, traced to Rasaq Momonu, Controller, Finance and Account, Kwara State Government House, which is suspected to be proceeds of crime.

The order of final forfeiture of the plaza, located at University Road, Tanke Area, Ilorin, was given by Justice Sikiru Oyinloye of a Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin, following an application brought before the court by the EFCC seeking for its forfeiture.
Moving the motion dated July 19, 2019, Nnaemeka Omewa, counsel for the EFCC, urged the court to grant the prayer for final forfeiture pursuant to Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences.

“I urge the Court to grant the motion,” he said.
Delivering the ruling, Justice Oyinloye granted the application and resolved all the issues raised in favour of the EFCC, noting that the EFCC fulfilled all the necessary requirements.

Oyinloye held that: “I have gone through the application brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, I also sighted the hearing notice issued to the respondent in the suit, Rasaq Momonu. This Honourable Court is persuaded that he had been served with the Court Processes.
“The application brought by the EFCC is meritorious and granted; this Honourable Court hereby orders the final forfeiture of the landed property known as Asmau Plaza, Tanke Road, Ilorin, Kwara State to the Federal Government of Nigeria.”

It will be recalled that Momonu is facing money laundering charges before Justice Babangana Ashigar of the Federal High Court, sitting in Ilorin, and is expected back in court on September 25, 2019.
In an affidavit deposed to by Musa Gidado, an investigating officer with the EFCC, Momonu is alleged of being complicit in the diversion of state funds.

Gidado said: “Investigations revealed that Rasaq Momonu used his influence as Accountant with Kwara State Government to award and inflate contracts for the construction of two classrooms at Ogbondoroko and Obanisuwa Community in Kwara State.
“Investigations further revealed that the respondent who is a Civil Servant that earns less than N100,000 in a month cannot afford to build the house known as Asmau Plaza between 2010 -2012.

“That I know as a fact that the respondent was confronted with the above findings by the applicant which he did not dispute and has agreed to forfeit the property known as Asmau Plaza to the Federal Government of Nigeria.”

23-year-old lady plots with boyfriend to rape close friend

A 23-year-old woman, Eniola Shittu has been arrested by officers of the Ogun State Police Command for conspiring with her boyfriend, a 31-year-old David Peremobowe, to rape her close friend (name withheld).

The incident happened in Ikopa tuntun Abiola way in Abeokuta, Ogun State, last week Wednesday.

According to a statement by DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the command’s spokesman, the suspects were arrested following a report lodged by the victim at Obantoko Division.

The statement reads; “The victim reported that she was at home on 24th of July, 2019 at about 1:45pm, when her friend Eniola Shittu sent message to her on WhatsApp that she should help her to buy food and skushis and bring it to her boyfriend’s house at Somorin area of Obantoko Abeokuta.”

“On getting there, the boyfriend David Peremobowe offered her a bottle of beer which she took.”

“But immediately she finished taken the beer, she became very weak as a result of which David Peremobowe unlawfully had her carnal knowledge, and while he was doing it, her friend Eniola Shittu used her phone to do the video recording of how she was being raped.”

“On the strength of her complaint, the DPO Obantoko Division, SP Olasunkanmi Popoola detailed his detectives to the boy’s house where David Peremobowe and his girlfriend Eniola Shittu were promptly arrested.”

“The Gionee handset with which the video coverage was made was also recovered.”

The Commissioner of Police CP Bashir Makama has, however, ordered the transfer of the suspects to Anti-human trafficking and child labour unit of the State investigation and intelligence department for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Osama Bin Laden’s son Hamza killed by America

Osama bin Laden’s son Hamza, chosen heir to the leadership of Al-Qaeda, has been killed, US media reported Wednesday citing American officials.

NBC News said three US officials had confirmed they had information of Hamza bin Laden’s death, but gave no details of the place or date.

The New York Times subsequently cited two US officials saying they had confirmation that he was killed during the last two years in an operation that involved the United States.

Questioned by reporters in the Oval Office, President Donald Trump did not confirm or deny the NBC report.

“I don’t want to comment on it,” he said.

Both reports suggested that bin Laden may have been killed well before the US State Department announced a $1 million bounty on his head in February 2019.

The 15th of Osama bin Laden’s 20 children and a son of his third wife, Hamza, thought to be about 30 years old, was “emerging as a leader in the Al-Qaeda franchise,” the State Department said in announcing the reward.

Sometimes dubbed the “crown prince of jihad, he had put out audio and video messages calling for attacks on the United States and other countries, especially to avenge his father’s killing by US forces in Pakistan in May 2011, the department said.

Documents seized in the raid on his father’s house in Abbottabad suggested Hamza was being groomed as heir to the Al-Qaeda leadership.

US forces also found a video of the wedding of Hamza to the daughter of another senior Al-Qaeda official that is believed to have taken place in Iran.

Hamza bin Laden’s whereabouts have never been pinpointed. He was believed to have been under house arrest in Iran but reports suggest he also may have resided in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Syria.

The group behind the deadly September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, Al-Qaeda’s prominence as a radical Islamist group has faded over the past decade in the shadow of the Islamic State group.

But the proliferation of branches and associated jihadist groups in Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria and elsewhere have underscored its continuing potency.

Hamza bin Laden was not targeted just because he was bin Laden’s son, said Rita Katz, executive director of the SITE Intelligence Group, which tracks extremists.

“He was one of Al-Qaeda’s loudest voices calling for attacks in the West and giving directives. He, with Al-Qaeda’s help, was positioning himself to lead the global jihadi movement,” Katz said on Twitter.

“He was seen as a future leader who would unite the global jihad. Thus, if he is indeed dead, it will be a major blow to the movement,” she said.

“I think it’s a big loss for Al-Qaeda,” said Pakistani security expert Rahimullah Yusufzai, one the few journalists to have interviewed Osama bin Laden face to face.

REALLY ? Anti-corruption: No going back says Nigerian Govt

The Federal Government has renewed its commitment towards the fight against corruption, saying there is no going back on the war against corruption in the country.

Executive Secretary, Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption, Prof. Sadiq Isah-Radda, said this at a One-Day Forum on Anti-corruption held in Kano on Thursday.

“As far as the Federal Government is concern, there is no going back on the fight against corruption,” he declared.

The presidential aide said though the government was facing some challenges, that would not discourage it from tackling the menace.

“Even though there are challenges or problems but we will continue with the fight because nobody will come from heaven to do it for us.

“The most disturbing issue is ‘illicit financial flows’ where billions and billions are being taken out of the country by crooks.

“Corruption has been as old as the country so much so that it is becoming a way of life. Before now those who refused to loot were seen as fools.

“When things become worst, the fight against corruption becomes a campaign issue in 2015,” Isah-Radda said.

He therefore called on Nigerians, irrespective of their political and religious inclinations, to support President Muhammadu Buhari to enable him eliminate corruption in the country for the betterment of the country.

Isah-Radda said Nigerians have a duty to contribute their quota toward the development of the country, adding that the federal government cannot do it alone.

He also urged governors to support the federal government in its determined effort to curb corruption in the country, stressing that there is no way the country could progress if we don’t tackle corruption.

He assured that the federal government would continue to support similar effort of the Human Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA), the organisers of the forum, in order to achieve the desired objective.

He noted that the Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption had done a lot and urged all stakeholders to support the crusade for a better Nigeria.

The forum, which was the first of its kind at the state level, has its theme as: Anti-corruption Situation Room, The Imperative of State Anti-corruption Agency: Kano State as Case Study.

The workshop was organised as part of effort to boost the vigour and strengthening of the war against corruption by building synergies between anti-corruption focused CSOs, labour movements and the media, among others.

UN: Boko Haram has killed over 27,000 civilians in 10 years

UN: Boko Haram has killed over 27,000 civilians in 10 years
Boko Haram insurgents have killed over 27,000 civilians since 2009 when the sect launched a campaign of violence.

Edward Kallon, United Nations humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria, said this at the UN building in Abuja during a remembrance of 10 years of crisis in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.

The programme took place on Wednesday.

Kallon said rising insecurity in the country had pushed over 130,000 people into displacement with most of them seeking refuge at internally displaced persons camps.

Expressing condolences to the families of aid workers who had lost their lives in the north-east and other states, Kallon said their memories will continue to live on in the hearts of all humanitarian aid workers.

He said the humanitarian community will continue to do its best to assist those affected by crisis.

The sect has also killed many security operatives on the battlefront.

Efforts to put Boko Haram in check have not yielded the desired result. On Saturday, Boko Haram fighter killed over 60 mourners in Borno.

Three days later, Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, said the sect had been defeated but critics of the government.

Man defiles six-year-old primary school girl in Ekiti

A Chief Magistrates’ Court, sitting in Ado Ekiti, on Thursday ordered that a labourer, Ishau Gruma, who allegedly defiled a six-year-old primary school girl, be remanded in prison, pending legal advice.

Chief Magistrate Adefunke Onoma, who did not take the plea of Gruma, ordered that the case file should be sent to the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Sgt. Olubu Apata told the court that the defendant committed the offence on July 20, at Aramoko Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Apata alleged that Gruma works as a labourer for the father of the six-year-old girl.

He said that the police took the victim to the hospital and the medical report revealed that she was defiled.

The prosecution said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 31(2) under the Child’s Right Law of Ekiti State Cap C7.

PDP, APC react to sack of Ondo federal lawmaker over UK citizenship status

The Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has rejected the ruling of the elections petition tribunal sitting in Akure, which sacked Ikengbolu Gboluga, member representing Okitipupa/Irele federal constituency in the House of Representatives.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the party’s Director of Publicity in the state, Zadok Akintoye, the PDP described the tribunal’s ruling as lacking basis.

Recall that on Wednesday, Gboluga’s victory at the February 2019 House of Representatives election was nullified for holding both the Nigeria citizenship and that of the United Kingdom, UK.

The party emphasized that the issue of citizenship being specified in the constitution and Gboluga has not contravene any electoral law.

The statement read, “We reject in its entirety the decision of the Elections Petitions Tribunal which nullified the legitimate mandate of the people of Okitipupa-Irele Federal Constituency given to Hon Ikengboju Gboluga of our party.

“We find the basis upon which the decision of the Tribunal was made, deeply troubling and at variance with the constitutional provisions under section 25 of the 1999 constitution as amended.

“The constitution, by virtue of section 28(1) which deals with dual citizenship and forfeiture of Nigerian citizenship, states expressly that:
Subject to the other provisions of this section, a person shall forfeit his Nigerian Citizenship if, NOT being a citizen Nigeria by birth, he acquires or retains the citizenship or nationality of a country, other than Nigeria, of which he is not a citizen by birth.

“Hon Ikengboju Gboluga, therefore, as a Nigerian citizen by birth cannot forfeit his citizenship if he acquires the citizenship of another country. This position has been endorsed by the Supreme Court in several cases. The possession of a secondary citizenship as in Hon Ikengboju Gbolugas’ case is therefore NOT a reason for the court to invalidate his victory at the polls. His Nigerian Citizenship by birth cannot be forfeited on any ground as posited by the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal.”

The statement further read that, “Let it be on record, that the petitioners in this case, lost the election with a margin of well over 90,000 votes and only won in his ward in his local government with a margin of less than 20 votes.

“Thus, we conclude that the Tribunal should have upheld a legitimate victory rather than use technicalities that are purely procedural to seek to set aside a valid election.

“Our party, therefore, rejects in its entirety the decision of the Tribunal which is in variance and contravention of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and therefore would be appealing this judgment.

“We enjoin all members of our party to remain calm as we retrieve this mandate at the appeal court,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, the APC in the state had commended the judgement of the tribunal which nullified the election of Ikengboju.

The Ondo State chairman of APC, Ade Adetimehin hailed the resilience of Akintoye to reclaim his mandate in court, stressing that it is an added advantage to the APC fold in the National Assembly.

Adetimehin, however, appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to immediately issue a certificate of return to Akintoye as directed by the tribunal.

Boko Haram: UN, others meet over 10 years insurgency in Nigeria

The United Nations, international and local NGOs and representatives of the Nigerian government Thursday morning at the UN House in Abuja met to mark the tenth year of the Boko Haram crisis in north-east Nigeria.

In attendance were Governor of Yobe, Mai Mala Buni, Chairman of the North East Development Commission, Paul Tarfa, Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mutapha Maihaja, among others.

The humanitarian community emphasised the immense humanitarian needs caused by the crisis and the necessity to continue scaling up life-saving assistance.

They reiterated their commitment to alleviate the suffering of the most vulnerable in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.

They also reaffirmed their commitment to work together to help people not only survive but also rebuild their lives and their communities.

“The crisis that started ten years ago is still far from over,” stressed Mr. Edward Kallon, United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria.

“We are here today to remember those who have lost their lives in the conflict, and to remind of those still struggling to survive and rebuild their lives.

“Ten years on, it is not the time for us to spare any effort. In this very critical period, we must collectively redouble efforts, with support at all levels – locally, nationally and internationally.”

Over the last decade, the conflict has claimed the lives of some 27,000 civilians and devastated entire communities, villages and towns across the three most-affected states.

“We have to pay attention to the needs and rights of people, especially those of women and children, and support local organisations to play a more visible role in the response.

“The protracted crisis in the north-east is of matter to the entire country. We don’t want this crisis to last another 10 years,” said Ms. Josephine Habba, President of the Nigeria NGO Network on Humanitarian Development Initiative (NINGONET).

Nigeria’s humanitarian crisis remains among one of the most severe in the world with 7.1 million people in need of life-saving assistance and 1.8 million people uprooted from their homes – the vast majority of them women and children.

Buhari govt working towards Nigeria’s break up – Afenifere replies Osinbajo

The Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere has accused the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government of “doing all kinds of things that can divide the country”.

Afenifere said this in response to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s call on those seeking the dissolution of Nigeria to look at the case of Sudan which broke up yet the problems still lingered.

In a statement signed and issued yesterday by its spokesperson, Yinka Odumakin, Afenifere said the federal government’s action can “make the breakup inevitable”.

According to Odumakin: “The president said yesterday that Abiola would have solved ethnic and religious problems in Nigeria, why are they not solving it. Why are they doing all kinds of things that can divide the country?.

“So if a break-up is not the solution but all the actions they are taking make the break-up inevitable. The Fulani people are doing so many things in the country, they are not doing anything against them. You are doing many things that can break up the country and yet you are saying break-up is not the solution.

“What kind of sermon are they preaching? If they are declaring Shites group as terrorists, what act of terrorism have they done, whereas those who are perpetrating terror in Nigeria you are giving them money.

“The Afenifere has never set out to ask for the break up of Nigeria, as a matter of fact, we don’t like it. It is those who are pursuing the policy of not making Nigerians good neighbors to themselves, those who regard some Nigerians as masters and some as slaves, those who discriminate and pursuing policy of discrimination, those who don’t provide employment for the millions of able-bodied Nigerians, even though, there are opportunities to do so, that could break up the country

“Some Nigerians who have the opportunity to utilise the resource to develop Nigeria and fail to do so. It is these people directly or indirectly, who are breaking this country up.”

No-deal Brexit: Britain to spend extra £2.1bn on planning

Britain said it was ramping up preparations for a no-deal Brexit by spending an extra 2.1 billion pounds to stockpile medicines, hire more border officials and fund one of the biggest peacetime advertising campaigns.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who took power last week, has pledged to leave the trading bloc without an agreement in three months unless the EU agrees to renegotiate the deal agreed by his predecessor Theresa May.

In his first major policy announcement, new finance minister, Sajid Javid said the outlay would allow the government to increase training for customs officials, hire more staff to deal with an expected increase in passport applications and improve infrastructure around ports.

“With 92 days until the UK leaves the EU it’s vital that we intensify our planning to ensure we are ready,” Javid said.

“We want to get a good deal that abolishes the anti-democratic backstop. But if we can’t get a good deal, we’ll have to leave without one.”

Wrenching the United Kingdom out of the EU without a deal means there would be no formal transition arrangement to cover everything from post-Brexit pet passports to customs arrangements on the Northern Irish border.

Many investors say a no-deal Brexit would send shock waves through the world economy, tip Britain into a recession, roil financial markets and weaken London’s position as the pre-eminent international financial centre.

Supporters of Brexit say that while there would be some short-term difficulties, the disruption of a no-deal Brexit has been overplayed and that in the long-term, the United Kingdom would thrive if it left the EU.
The finance ministry, which said the new money will “turbo-charge” no-deal preparations, will provide an immediate cash boost of 1.1 billion pounds and make a further one billion pounds available for government departments.

This will also include the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

This means the government has in total allocated 6.3 billion pounds to prepare for a no-deal exit, including 4.2 billion pounds of funding for this financial year.

The ministry said, among other initiatives, 434 million pounds would be spent to ensure vital supplies of medicines and medical products can be brought into the country, including hiring additional freight capacity, warehousing and stockpiling.

To get people and businesses ready for a no-deal Brexit, 138 million pounds will be spent on one of the biggest peacetime advertising campaigns and provide extra consular support for citizens living overseas.

A total of 344 million pounds will be spent on new border and customs operations, including hiring an extra 500 border force officers and doubling the support for customs agents to help companies fill in customs declarations.

Javid’s predecessor Philip Hammond, who opposed leaving the EU without a divorce deal, was accused by Brexit supporters of failing to spend enough money to get Britain ready for a no-deal Brexit, undermining its negotiating position with Brussels.

The main opposition Labour party branded the spending an “appalling waste of taxpayers’ cash” because the majority of lawmakers in parliament had made clear their intention to block an exit without a withdrawal agreement.

“This government could have ruled out no deal, and spent these billions on our schools, hospitals, and people,” said John McDonnell, the party’s finance chief.

Chief Secretary to the Treasury Rishi Sunak rejected those claims.

“It is my job to make sure that we spend taxpayers’ money wisely.

“The good news here is a lot of this money and a lot of this investment are things we need to do in all cases because we are leaving the EU,” he said.

Fuel scarcity looms as NUPENG issues 7-day ultimatum

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, on Wednesday, issued a seven-day strike notice to the Federal Government.

NUPENG wants the President Muhammadu Buhari government to compel Chevron Nigeria Limited, CNL, to honour the agreement it reached with the union on June 20.

It said that failing to comply, the union would direct its members to commence strike action.

NUPENG made the demand in a statement signed by its President and General Secretary, Prince Williams Akporeha and Afolabi Olawale respectively.

The union said, “NUPENG, with deep frustration and worries, would like to alert the general public and all relevant authorities of the blatant violation of agreement reached between Chevron Nigeria Limited Company and unions in the industry.

“It is public knowledge that unions in the oil and gas industry had a protracted negotiation with Chevron Nigeria Limited over 70 per cent labour manpower reduction which it (Chevron) claimed was required in view of reduction in their operations in the oil and gas Industry.

“After up to one year negotiation, brokered by Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC; National Petroleum Investment Management Services, NAPIMS, and Ministry of Labour, it was agreed that considering the intervention of all the institutions mentioned above and the various justifications made, only 30 per centof the Labour Manpower Contract Workers will be relieved.

“Of the 1,856 contract workers in the company, NUPENG has 1,120; PENGASSAN, 213; and non-unionised, 523. It was agreed that the 30% reduction shall be spread in equal percentage among the three groups.

“It was also agreed that union executives (NUPENG and PENGASSAN) will not be affected by the reduction, that Chevron Nigeria Limited will not in any guise change the Labour manpower to service contracts.

‘’It was also agreed that anyone that voluntarily offers to go will be counted as part of the agreed 30%. Unfortunately, immediately after the agreement was reached, Chevron started executing the exercise in blatant violation of the agreed terms, ostensibly to either put NUPENG in bad light as troublesome or for extinction because only NUPENG members have been exited from work, leaving behind the Non- Unionised workers and PENGASSAN members.

‘’It is further embarrassing to see that NUPENG executives are also part of those already locked out. From our record, over 500 of NUPENG members are being sacked. We further learned that the intention of Chevron is to change the contract to short term service contract and we see this as unfair and a breach of agreement reached with us in bad faith.

“All NUPENG executives should be called back to work, the percentage of reduction agreed should be spread to the three groups as agreed to avoid creating the impression that NUPENG was the target of the exercise.

“The good disposition of the new leadership of NUPENG should not be taken for granted. Chevron should not be allowed to use this exercise to change the Labour Manpower contract to service contract in a disguised manner. “Consequent on the above demands and having been pushed to the wall, NUPENG, hereby, puts all our members on red alert should Chevron Nigeria Limited and its contractors fail to honour or comply with our demands within the next seven days, we would also not hesitate to take all necessary legal options available to us, including industrial actions, to press home our legitimate demands.”

Read 11 dangerous foods that cause cancer

The food we eat is at the heart of many cancers. In fact, up to 70% of cancers are thought to be preventable through diet. The other 30% has to do with genetics and environmental factors that you can’t control.

Here is a list of foods you must avoid to steer clear of cancer as shared by www.nutritionexp.com

Canned food

Canned food tends to contain really high levels of salt and/or sugar, but that’s not the main reason it is bad for you. It’s actually the cans that contain the food.

They are often lined with the dangerous chemical BPA, which is a known hormone disrupter that has also been linked to cancer. BPA will leech into whatever food comes in contact with it, especially things that are naturally acidic, such as tomatoes.

Eat your produce fresh or frozen instead, or only buy canned products that are labeled as BPA-free.

Sugar drinks

Soda drinks are really bad for you. Sugar is necessary in small amounts, but is also cancer cells’ favourite food and sodas contain enough to choke a horse.

It also has no redeeming nutritional value and puts you at greater risk of cancer due to the artificial chemicals and colourings that are added. If it’s a caffeine energy boost you need, a much healthier option is lightly sweetened tea or coffee, both of which have anti-cancer properties.

To get the bubbles in soda without the negative health consequences, buy carbonated water and add a touch of citrus juice for flavour.

Potato chips
Chips aren’t healthy because they contain a lot of salt and saturated fat which is overwhelming to your body’s digestive system.

The reason they increase your cancer risk is something called acrylamide, a carcinogenic chemical that occurs anytime food is cooked to a high temperature.

Frying potatoes produces a lot of it, but it’s also the reason why health experts advise against charring your meat during cooking. Acrylamide is also found in cigarettes and is part of the reason they are so deadly.

Smoked or processed meat

Red meat, in general, should be limited due to its high-fat content, but any meat that has been processed is best avoided almost entirely. That won’t be easy because a lot of tasty products are on the list, including bacon, lunch meat, sausage, jerky, and smoked barbecue.

A lot of these foods are preserved using nitrates and nitrites, which are linked to cancer. And even though smoking is an age-old technique for preserving food, it causes meat to take on tar in the process. It’s bad in cigarettes and just as dangerous in food.

Farmed salmon

You may be wondering what is left that you can eat, especially in terms of protein, but rest assured that fish can still be a very healthy choice. Naturally lean, it contains high levels of the healthy omega-3 fatty acids that your body really needs.

Unfortunately, farmed salmon live an overcrowded, high-stress life and are fed an unnatural diet full of antibiotics and cancer-causing chemicals. As a result, their meat is high in PCBs, dioxins, and mercury – all dangerous stuff for humans to consume.

However, wild sockeye salmon is a whole different story, and a great meal choice if you can find it at the grocery store.

Microwave popcorn

Much like canned foods, the problem with microwave popcorn is the way it is stored. Most microwave bags are lined with a product called PFOA, which has been linked to the occurrence of pancreas, kidney, liver, bladder, and testicular cancer.

When you pop the corn in the microwave, PFOA coats the finished product right along with the artificial trans fat “butter”. Popcorn itself can be a healthy snack, however, if you use an air popper and then toss it with a little bit of garlic-infused olive oil or a flavorful dried herb mix.

White flour

Whole grains are very healthy, but the processing that creates refined white flour completely strips away the value. White flour is also given its colour by a blast of chlorine gas, not something you want to be eating.

Besides being nutritionally void, white flour has an extremely high glycemic index, which means that it breaks down into sugar in the body, spiking blood glucose and insulin levels along with it. This state in the body is thought to feed cancer cells. Try to stick to baked goods that use whole grain flours.

High Fructose corn syrup

High fructose corn syrup is dangerous because, even though it comes from natural corn, the sweetness is highly concentrated. Foods that contain it are likely to put your blood sugar through the roof and create the perfect environment for cancer cells to thrive.

It is not thought to cause cancer directly, but it’s dangerous to create conditions in your body that are ideal for cancer to grow. Avoiding packaged foods and cooking at home is the best way to avoid high fructose corn syrup all together.

Alcohol

Excess alcohol consumption is bad for you for lots of reasons. Drinking to excess makes your liver and kidneys work extra hard, not to mention triggers a whole host of bad decisions from your stupefied brain.

Studies also indicate that consuming too much alcohol puts you at greater risk for cancer of the mouth, oesophagus, liver, colon, and rectum. How much is too much? In general, one drink per day for women and two for men is considered safe, but there’s no real health benefit to drinking at all. Red wine does contain some heart-healthy resveratrol, but so do red grapes.

Pickled food

Pickling is another form of processing that adds nitrates or nitrites, salt, and artificial colouring to food. In much the same way that too much alcohol can cause cancer in the parts of the body it touches directly, pickled foods are linked to cancer of the digestive tract, especially the stomach and colon.

If you really love pickles, take the time to make them at home so that you can control the level of salt and avoid artificial pickling solutions.

Hydrogenated oil

You might think that oil from vegetables ought to be healthy, but this is another case where processing of natural products makes them dangerous. Oil cannot be extracted from whole vegetables naturally, so they undergo a chemical extraction process.

Then, the oil is coloured and the natural scent is removed to make the finished product look appealing. This chemical process is what makes the oil hydrogenated.

It is found in many processed foods, added for texture and to preserve them, but hydrogenated oils affect the cells’ structure and flexibility, upping the chance for cancer to develop.
