Police officer snatches another man’s wife, detains son for challenging him

A serving policeman, ASP Danladi Edibo, attached to the anti-cult unit in Enugwu-Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, has allegedly handcuffed and detained a 22-year-old man, Mr. Chukwunonso Ikenna Ogbukagu, for disapproving his relationship with his mother, Mrs. Ogbukagu.

Chukwunonso, who revealed this to journalists after he escaped from the unlawful detention, said he visited Nimo, a town in Njikoka LGA to see his mother who recently left his dad to rent a separate house, but noticed that the mother had a male friend who always visited her in the apartment.

“When I demanded from my mother who the man was, I found out it was the same police officer, ASP Danladi who had a problem with my father, who also caused my parents to separate.

“The man knowing that I had noticed who he was now called some policemen who came with guns and handcuffed me and detained me in a toilet in the apartment. I stayed there for four days without food or water, and later I realized that I may die if I continue to be here, so I summoned courage and escaped.”

He begged the State police command to come to his aid, as his life was in danger, as the Edibo may come after him.

Meanwhile, the father of the victim, Chief Ikenna Ogbukagu has petitioned the Anambra State Police Commissioner, CP Monday Bala Kuryas, called for the restraint of ASP Edibo from further harassing him and members of his family.

In an interview, he further stated that, “ASP Danladi Edibo has been harassing me and members of my family. He collected my wife from me, and I said I have no problem with that, that he can keep her. He has taken her, and rented a house for her in Nimo, and I did not protest, yet he has been threatening me.

“Last year, he came to my house at about 1am with police officers, destroyed my doors and arrested me, saying that I sponsor cultists. There is nothing he has not done to me. I am very afraid for my life now, that is why I petitioned the commissioner to come to my aid.”

When DAILY POST reached out to the Anambra State police command’s spokesperson, CSP Haruna Mohammed, he stated that the petition was receiving attention, saying that it may not be right to pre-empt it.

Kidnappers release videos of Afaka students

Videos of the students abducted from Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, Afaka, Igabi LGA of Kaduna state, have surfaced online.

At least 30 of the students were reported missing after suspected bandits attacked the school in the early hours of Friday.

The Kaduna state government said 172 students and eight staff members were rescued from the bandits, but the whereabouts of the remaining students were unknown.

The abduction is the latest in a series of attacks by bandits across schools in northern Nigeria.

In the videos which surfaced online on Saturday, the students were seen sitting on the floor in an unknown location, guarded by armed men whose identities were concealed.

The victims appealed to the government to pay the ransom demanded by the bandits so that they would be freed.

They appealed against the deployment of security operatives to rescue them, stating that their abductors had warned that such a move would be counter-productive.

An official of the school had claimed that all the missing students are female.

However, in a statement issued later on Friday, Samuel Aruwan, commissioner for internal security and home affairs, said “checks indicate that 39 persons are missing”, adding that they comprise “23 females and 16 males”.

Some of the victims seen in the video released on Saturday are male.

One of the abductees who identified himself as Benson Emmanuel said most of them were injured and needed medical attention.

The armed men were also seen whipping some of the victims.

“My name is Benson Emmanuel, from forestry mobilisation. We appeal to the government to come and rescue us. Most of us here have been badly injured,” Emmanuel said.

“Time is going. Most of us here are having health issues and they (bandits) are complaining about the government trying to send security operatives to come and rescue us from here, which is almost impossible, because these people have surrounded us, saying anybody that comes from anywhere to come and rescue us or do anything by force, they are going to take our lives.

“We are appealing to the government to come now, because these people have a bad mind towards us.”

Below are photos of some students as seen in the video.

No more amnesty, negotiation with criminals in Benue – Ortom

Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue said his administration will no longer negotiate with or grant amnesty to criminals under any guise in the state.

Ortom stated this on Saturday in Anyiin, Logo Local Government Area of the state at the burial of Mr. Terkura Suswam, the slain elder brother of former governor, Sen. Gabriel Suswam.

Suswam was killed along with his aide, Mr Solomon Utanor on March 2, close to his residence in Anyiin.

The governor condemned the crime rate in Logo, Ukum and Katsina-Ala, reiterating his determination to end all forms of criminalities in the state.

“There is no more amnesty, no more negotiation with them, (criminals) except they come back like the prodigal son and plead for forgiveness,’’ he said.

According to the governor, the State Security Council has declared total war on the assailants and other criminal elements in the state and no matter how long it takes, they will be defeated.

He described the late Suswam as a great man who would ever be remembered for his legacies, pointing out that he died struggling to bring peace, prosperity and economic development to his community, Anyiin.

The governor expressed concerns that the incident may deter investors from coming to invest in the village but he appealed that such investors should not be distracted by the unfortunate incident.

“You can see in Anyiin alone, we have Ashi Polytechnic, Ashi International Market, Micro Finance Bank and a Rice Mill.

“These are the things that we are using to woo investors to come and do business in the state because government does not have the resources to do it alone.

“The late Suswam saw it but unfortunately, he met his death right here in Anyiin struggling to work and add value to the economic development of the community,’’ the governor said.

Ortom reiterated his administration’s commitment to go after those who had taken to crime in the state, particularly the Sankera axis.

“From intelligence report, some members of the community are supporting these criminals which makes it difficult for security men.

“I want to assure youths in the state, not only in Sankera, that we are going to go after these criminals and by the grace of God we will get them.’’

The governor appealed to Sankera people to support the government and security agencies to be able to restore law and order in the troubled local governments.

Minneapolis approves $27m settlement agreement over death of George Floyd

The city of Minneapolis in the United States has approved the sum of $27 million as settlement, following the civil lawsuit filed by George Floyd’s family over his death in police custody.

In May 2020, a video of a police officer — now identified as Derek Chauvin — kneeling on Floyd’s neck went viral, and sparked major protests within and outside the US.

Floyd was confirmed dead following the incident on May 25; he was buried on June 9, 2020.

Speaking on June 10, 2020, at a hearing of the US house committee on judiciary in Washington DC, Philonise Floyd had described his brother as a gentle giant whose death should not be in vain.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had also launched an investigation into the incident.

In a statement issued on Friday, the decision to approve the $27 million settlement agreement was said to have been reached following a unanimous vote by the Minneapolis council.

The city also added that the amount “includes a $500,000 contribution from the George Floyd family to the community at 38th and Chicago”.

“The killing of George Floyd in police custody on May 25, 2020 has forever transformed Minneapolis and sparked a racial reckoning around the world. The settlement in this civil lawsuit is independent and separate from the criminal trial underway. Jury selection for the trial of former MPD officer Derek Chauvin started March 8. The other former officers J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao are scheduled to go to trial on Aug. 23,” the statement reads.

Speaking on the decision of the city council, Jacob Frey, mayor of Minneapolis, thanked the Floyd family for staying strong, and promised that the government would continue to improve on its efforts on community policing.

“I cannot begin to thank the Floyd family enough for their strength and courage to use their voices to push us all to do better in our collective work in honoring their brother, father, and son. Amid unprecedented loss and pain, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity before us to effectuate change that has eluded policymakers, advocates, and community calls for far, far too long,” Frey said.

“We need to be unrelenting and unapologetic in our pursuit of a more equitable local government and more just approach to community safety and policing. And we will be.”

In her remarks, Lisa Bender, Minneapolis council president, offered her condolences to the family, adding that no amount would be enough to make up for the pain they have gone through.

“No amount of money can ever address the intense pain and trauma caused by his death to George Floyd’s family and to the people of our city. Minneapolis has been fundamentally changed by this time of racial reckoning. The Minneapolis City Council is united in working together with our community and the Floyd family to equitably reshape Minneapolis,” Bender was quoted as saying.

On her part, Andrea Jenkins, vice-president of the city council, called for calm and maintained that whatever the outcome of the trial, “we are all committed to seeking justice in all forms.”

“We cannot control the actions of the past. But we do have control over our actions in the days, weeks and years to come and how we move forward together, to begin the healing process. Transformational healing. Today is where this begins. And the Floyd family has shown us the way,” Jenkins added.

Buhari has analogue mindset, non-proactive nature contributed to insecurity – Ex-Ohanaeze spokesman

Chuks Ibegbu, a former Deputy spokesman of the Igbo socio-political organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, on Friday, lambasted President Muhammadu Buhari over the spate of insecurity in Nigeria.

Ibegbu said Buhari lacks the powers to tackle insecurity in the country due to his analogue mindset.

Speaking with DAILY POST, Ibegbu insisted that the president’s failure to properly constitute the country’s security architecture and lack of proactive nature has contributed to Nigeria’s insecurity challenges.

According to the former Ohanaeze Deputy Spokesman: “Recently, he ordered a shoot-at-sight of people wielding AK-47 and also changed Service Chiefs, this showed that he is concerned about the situation of insecurity.

“However, he also contributed to it because the security architecture was not properly constituted, it favoured one part of the country and that was not good enough for the leader of a country to be nepotic in security appointments but despite the recent steps he’s taking, it’s not enough.

“He should look into the decentralization of police because security is all about the grassroot, involving the traditional rulers, youth leaders in all the various segments of the society, I think the president is now waking up.

“Buhari does not have all the attributes of a leader that is proactive and he is not very proactive on issues. He is sectional in his approach to issues.

“We live in a digital age, but the president operates in an analogue age, I think his mindset is analogue and that is a very big challenge to Nigeria because we need to forget about sectionality and allow people with digital mindset, Buhari does not have it.”

“I was raped five times” – Iyabo Ojo

Popular Nollywood actress and serial entrepreneur, Iyabo Ojo, has opened up on how she was brutally raped five times.

The actress recently revealed that the pain she goes through as a woman living with the memory of being molested five times will never go away.

The fashionista shared her story on the recent episode of: “Bare it all with I Y.''

Ojo revealed that she was first raped at the age of 14 but refused to tell anyone because it was like a taboo to be raped at that time.

Ojo while narrating her bitter experience, she encouraged other victims to open up, and also to remind every woman who has been faced with assaults of such that they are not alone.

She said, “I know a lot of ladies who have been through what I have been through. I feel it is time for me to talk to them and make them understand that it is okay to talk about it. To let them know that it is not okay to be in the situation.

“Like I said, yes I have been raped before. Not once but five times. And trust me when I say it wasn’t easy. The first time I was raped, I was 14. It happened at my aunty’s house (not a family member). I didn’t want to talk about it because it was taboo to talk about it. I felt I would be blamed for everything that happened.

“And the second one, that was another terrible one that happened. And I still could not tell anybody in my family. I summoned a bit of courage to tell a friend of mine then and it was one of the reasons I ran away at a particular time. The whole family was looking for me and when they eventually found me, I still didn’t talk about it.

“Now, the third one, the guy was a neighbour. We were very close to each other. My dad’s house and his house were the second or third street away in the same neighbourhood. He was a friend to my first boyfriend, though he was much older than him.”

She added, “I never knew that he had such an intention. I grew up in the Obanikoro area of Lagos. I moved to Ikeja to stay with my aunty. However, I went to Obanikoro sometimes to check on my grandmother, dad, and boyfriend. On my way from Obanikoro going home, I was at the bus stop waiting for a taxi, then his car drove past me and he stopped.

“We exchanged pleasantries. He asked me where I was going. I told him that I was going to Ikeja and he offered to drop me off. He said he had moved to Ikeja. When we got to Ikeja, he told me he lives in Toyin Street. I told him I know the street very well because I lived in Balogun Bus Stop in Ikeja. He said he should show me his house so that I could visit whenever I feel like it.

“I didn’t see any big deal in it because he was a friend to my ex, the first boyfriend then. When we got to his house, he had a rug, air-conditioner and television in the parlour. He suddenly said he was hungry and asked me if I was hungry too. I told him that I wasn’t because I was already late and my aunty would be waiting for me.

“He then said he had loved me even before Emmanuel met me and that when he found out I was going out with Emmanuel, he was heartbroken. At that time, I was almost 18 years old. He started trying to touch me. I got up angrily and made my way to the door. I noticed that it was locked. I told him to open the door. He told me that he loves me.

“Then he started dragging me. That brought back memories of the experience I had been through that first time. So, it dawned on me that it was about to happen again. I didn’t want it to so I wrestled with him. I tried to push him and ran into one of the rooms to open the window to scream but he pulled me back with my hair and then he held my neck to the wall.

“I continued struggling and wrestling with him so he dragged me out of the room because he didn’t want me to shout and gave me a dirty slap. I hit my head on the wall. I was a bit dizzy trying to find my feet and he went into the kitchen to get the knife. When he got the knife, his eyes went red and his face changed.

“He wasn’t the same person that I knew. It dawned on me that if I fight him, I will end up dead. Then he dragged me back into the room. I was just numb. He did whatever he wanted to do. When he was done, he went out and came back and started calling my name because I was still at the spot he raped me. Then he started calling me baby. That word baby was piercing my brain because I was mad.

“You never get over it, but it gets to a stage in your life whereby it becomes a story to tell. You have to deal with it. I have been able to deal with it in my way because before, I can’t talk about it. When I try to, I get so emotional, angry, and many other things come with it.

“Right now, I can talk about it. So, after the kissing, he said he loved me and I told him that I loved him too. He went to drop me off at my bus stop. While walking down home, I could remember that I was just calm. I had no feelings or emotions. I got home and luckily my aunty wasn’t around. I just went straight upstairs and climbed into the bathtub and just started crying.

“I cried my heart out. Then I pondered about telling my ex-boyfriend. My ex-boyfriend was a bad boy and I wouldn’t say I liked all the bad things he did. So I decided not to tell him because they might kill or do something terrible to him if I did. I didn’t want that because I didn’t want blood on my hands.

“I don’t know if what I did was right or wrong. So, the only way not to tell him was to break up with him. Then the other one happened after I got married to my husband and had my kids, then we moved to Ikeja. I was raped by one of the armed robbers who came to our house. It’s not easy to talk about rape. No matter how much you talk about it, you have to realise that it is painful, but you are not alone.”

Gani Adams: FG playing ethnic card on security

Gani Adams, Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, says the federal government and security agencies are playing the ethnic card on issues of security.

In an interview with The Sun, Adams said it is clear that security agencies are not ready to protect citizens.

The Aare Ona Kakanfo was speaking on the state of security in the south-west, which has witnessed a high rate of banditry and kidnapping.

While describing the current state of security in the country as “unfortunate”, Adams said if care is not taken, the poor handling of these criminal activities may lead to war.

“It is clear that the Nigerian security is not ready to protect its citizens. Nigeria security and the government are playing politics and an ethnic card on the issues of security. This is very dangerous,” he said.

“And if care is not taken, this might lead the country to war. It is very unfortunate that we find ourselves in this position. It is sad that our leaders, perhaps, the majority of them didn’t fight for this democracy, hence, are handling it with levity.

“They are enjoying the democracy that they didn’t fight for. Many of them didn’t support us when we were fighting for it. These types of leaders don’t also know how fragile democracy could be. Neither do they know the implications of not protecting the lives of the citizens, which they have sworn to do.

“They do not know the consequences of not upholding the tenets of democracy in a society like Nigeria.”

Adams said the recent happenings in the country show that the police should not be entrusted with the lives of citizens.

“I use this medium to appeal to the police authorities to give the trust back to the people,” he said.

“Let’s not forget what happened during the EndSARS protest. But with recent happenings, it is giving signals to the world that the Nigeria police should not be entrusted with our lives.”

We should continue using AstraZeneca vaccine, no cause for alarm – WHO insists

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has insisted on the continuous use of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine after several European countries suspended vaccination over blood clot fears.

WHO spokeswoman, Margaret Harris, stated this on Friday while speaking to reporters at a briefing in Geneva.

According to Harris, there is no reason to stop using the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine because WHO has reviewed the data on deaths.

Recall that Romania, Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Italy have postponed or limited the rollout of AstraZeneca vaccines following isolated reports of recipients developing blood clots.

“AstraZeneca is an excellent vaccine, as are the other vaccines that are being used,” Harris said.

“We have reviewed the data on deaths. There has been no death, to date, proven to have been caused by vaccination.”

Harris added, “Yes, we should continue using the AstraZeneca vaccine. Any safety signal must be investigated.

“We must always ensure that we look for any safety signals when we roll out vaccines, and we must review them.

“But there is no indication to not use it.”
