NEXT LEVEL MOVEMENT ! Bandits abduct 3-month old baby, 7 others, kill 2 in Zamfara

Security forces are now trailing yet to be identified gunmen who invaded Kanoma village in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara and abducted seven persons, including a three month old baby along with her mother, killing two people.
An eye witness, Malam Ibrahim Muhammed told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gusau on Wednesday that the bandits in their hundreds besieged the area at about 3 am on Tuesday and fired gun shots sporadically in the air to scare the residents away.
Muhammad further explained that “It was while they were scaring the people with gun shots that they killed the two victims who came out in the confusion.
“We tried to raise alarm to security agencies who were stationed in different places along Sokoto/Gusau road, but everyone was afraid of being sighted by the assailants who held powerful fire arms,” he said.
He said the bandits went to the residence of one Dan Haja, a business man, beat him with iron rods and inflicted serious injuries on him after which they went away with his wife who is a nursing mother and her three months old baby.
He also said the bandits moved to the house of a retired Director-General in the state government, Alhaji Sani Abdullahi, and picked him too along with six other persons and disappeared.
“At a later time, they called to demand for a ransom of 50 million naira for the release of those abductees,” Muhammad said.
When contacted, the state Police Command spokesman, SP Mohammed Shehu confirmed the attack but said, “from the report we received, no one was killed and a total of eight persons mostly women and children were abducted by the attackers.”
He said, the command’s Tactical and Anti-terrorism units had been deployed to the area to trail the bandits and arrest them, adding that peace had been restored to the area.
He urged members of the public to always report such attacks or suspicious movements in good time so that assistance could come.

National Human Rights Commission reacts to arrest of sex workers

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has decried the recent arrest of sex workers and closure of brothels in Umuahia, the Abia capital, on the orders of the state government.
Ms Uche Nwokocha, the Coordinator of NHRC in Abia, described the action as as “the criminalisation of poverty” by the government and its agencies.
Nwokocha said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Umuahia on Wednesday.
NAN reports that the state government had ordered the immediate shutdown of some brothels in the state capital, alleging that they had become hideouts for crminials.
It also directed security agencies to rid the brothels of suspected hoodlums, a situation which led to the arrest of the sex workers by the police.
However, the NHRC boss described the action as an abuse of the right of the sex workers, adding that the arrested ladies were being punished because they were poor.

She said: “There are other women elsewhere doing similar things and they are not being arrested.
“If you are looking for criminals go to their families. These are just poor women they are preying on.
“The only difference is that these people are poor and they don’t have the opportunity others have.
“And because of that, they are being punished. How many of them are being prosecuted, it is wrong,” she said.
Nwokocha, who is a legal practitioner, however, advised the state government to find out why there was a large number of women going into prostitution rather than clamping down on them.
“If the Government of Abia has discovered that there is still a high influx of prostitutes into the state, I think the government should ask why.
“If some of them are into prostitution because of the situation they found themselves in, the government can assist them by giving them some packages that can help them settle down.
“But if there are still some, who still want to do prostitution, they should be allowed to do whatever they want,” Nwokocha said.

CHIEF LOOTER FOR NEXT LEVEL ! Prepare for tough time, CBN Governor, Emefiele tells Nigerians

Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Governor, Godwin Emefiele has told Nigerians to prepare for a challenging time, saying the road ahead is still very tough.
Emefiele spoke while he appeared before Senate’s Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions for screening for his second term nomination by President Muhammadu Buhari.
He said the CBN would continue to do its best.
According to him, “the road ahead is still very tough.”
He said Nigeria has workable policies but “implementation has been neglected because we see sabotaged activities.
“CBN will ensure that those who seek to undermine the policies of Nigeria will be brought to book. Pray for us because the road ahead is tough.
“On Agriculture, the credit should go to the President. It was what he said ‘eat what we produce’, that birth the anchor borrowers programme.
“We have started looking at Palm oil. The price of a barrel of palm oil is more than a barrel of crude oil. We will grow that market again. After palm oil, we will focus on cocoa in the south-west.”
However, Emefiele urged the Federal Government to attach premium to palm oil production, saying its price is higher than crude oil.
He did not, however, give the current prices of the commodities in the international market, but said that palm oil was a goldmine, which Nigeria had capacity to export to many countries.
The CBN governor expressed concern that though Nigeria was one of the major palm oil producers in the 1960s, it failed to consolidate on it because of the discovery of crude oil.
He, however, said that the CBN, through its legal functions, would come up with a special programme to boost palm oil production to help in diversifying the economy.
According to him, Nigeria had the potential to export palm oil and boost its revenue generation.
Emefiele recalled that “in the 60s, Nigeria controlled 40 per cent share in the global palm oil chain’’.
“We were exporting our palm oil to different parts of the world, but because we found crude oil, we receded and abandoned it.
“The price of a tonne of palm oil is more than the price of a barrel of crude oil. So, what happened?
“For other countries, when they had the opportunity in agriculture and in the crude sector, they did not let their guards down; unfortunately, we did and that is what we are paying for today.
“Such move is so, so that when there are some external shock, it will not be felt. We will grow that market again and after that, we will go into cocoa,” he said.
He commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his commitment to repositioning the agriculture sector.
According to Emefiele, the president had on different occasions insisted that the country should be producing what it would consume and consume what it would produce.
He noted that the charge resonated with CBN management, which took it further by starting the Anchor Borrowers Programme that had impacted so much on the lives of Nigerians.

Facebook restricts live-streaming feature

Facebook Inc says it is tightening rules around its livestreaming feature ahead of a meeting of world leaders aimed at curbing online violence in the aftermath of a massacre in New Zealand.
A lone gunman killed 51 people at two mosques in the city of Christchurch on March 15 while livestreaming the attacks on Facebook.
It was New Zealand’s worst peacetime shooting and spurred calls for tech companies to do more to combat extremism on their services.
Facebook said in a statement it was introducing a “one-strike” policy for use of Facebook Live, temporarily restricting access for people who have faced disciplinary action for breaking the company’s most serious rules anywhere on its site.
First-time offenders will be suspended from using Live for set periods of time, the company said. It is also broadening the range of offences that will qualify for one-strike suspensions.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the change addressed a key component of an initiative, known as the “Christchurch Call”, she is spearheading to halt the spread of violence online.
“Facebook’s decision to put limits on livestreaming is a good first step to restrict the application being used as a tool for terrorists, and shows the Christchurch Call is being acted on,” she said in an email from her spokesman.

Abacha Loot: CSOs ask Buhari to fire Malami over $15m ‘dubious’ lawyers fee

Abacha Loot: CSOs ask Buhari to fire Malami over $15m ‘dubious’ lawyers fee
Some civil society organisations have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to find a replacement for Abubakar Malami, the attorney-general of the federation (AGF), over the payment of $15 million to lawyers he engaged for the repatriation of $321 million Abacha Loot.
Enrich Monfrini, a Swiss lawyer hired by the federal government since 1999 for the recovery of the loot, had already completed the job, and been paid his fee.
In a series of interviews with TheCable, Monfrini insisted that there was no need for the AGF to engage new lawyers.
Rather than write directly to the Swiss authorities to seek the transfer of the funds to Nigeria, Malami, however, engaged Oladipo Okpeseyi and Tope Adebayo for the purpose, and despite the outcry, the lawyers were eventually paid secretly.
At a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, the coalition said the president who promised to fight corruption is losing the momentum.
“We recall the shady deal involving the minister which led to the approval for payment of a highly controversial and contentious payment of $17 million to two lawyers for an already concluded deal on the repatriation of the Abacha
Loot from the Swiss Bank,” Ezenwa Nwagwu, convener of Say No Campaign, who spoke on behalf of the coalition, said.
“One of the greatest disappointments in the fight against corruption under this administration has come from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice, whose actions and inactions have continued to bring shame to the proclaimed anti-corruption campaign of the administration and huge losses to Nigeria.
“Statutory provisions make the office of Attorney General of the Federation pivotal to the fight against corruption, charging its occupant with the sole responsibility to deliver justice, in PUBLIC INTEREST, in its actions, inactions and decisions. This is as contained in Sections 174(1) (2) and (3) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.
“Sadly, Nigerians recall many shady and odious roles the current Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami has played to deliberately frustrate the fight against corruption the last three years.”
The group listed the AGF’s alleged role in the “fraudulent” reinstatement of Abdulrasheed Maina, former chairman of the Pension Task Force, into the civil service.
Malami was also said to have been fingered in an attempt to frustrate the investigation and prosecution of the director-general of the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for his “involvement in the diversion” of about N2.5 billion.
He was also accused of superintending over a “systematic strategy of frustrating the freedom of information (FoI) law, as government agencies have found cover and a new boldness to ignore and treat, with impunity, the many FOI requests in order to frustrate any accountability effort by concerned public”.
The AGF is yet to respond to a series of FOI requests sent by Cable Foundation, seeking information on the Abacha Loot, after more than a year.
In its recommendations, the coalition said as Buhari prepares for swearing-in and commencement of his second term on May 29, he should; “immediately relieve and replace the current Attorney General of the Federation, Mr Malami, in order to salvage the fight against corruption and recover public confidence and support for the fight against corruption.”
The civil society organisations also want the president to reconfigure his fight against corruption by ensuring people with questionable characters are not appointed to sensitive positions capable of curtailing the independence of key anti-corruption agencies and the fight against corruption.
The coalition include: SAY NO CAMPAIGN, YES Project, YIAGA AFRICA, African Centre for Media and Information Literacy(AFRICMIL), The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), Cable Foundation, Action Aid Nigeria, and Lawyers’ Network Against Corruption (LAWNAC).

“For me, I will drag your life from hell and back until I’m ok!! We all can’t be the same, you know.”
However, Churchill has now come up to describe himself as a tireless man in bed.

Mourinho speaks on becoming PSG’s new manager

Former Manchester United and Chelsea boss, Jose Mourinho, has insisted that he will not be working at Paris Saint-Germain next season as they already have a coach.

Mourinho is ready to return to management and has been linked with PSG.
In an interview with L’Equipe, he was asked about joining two of France’s top clubs.
“It’s impossible [to coach PSG]. You can’t coach a club that’s got a coach! Speak to me about a club where the door is open.
“I don’t have an answer [about Lyon]. I don’t respond to that type of question.
“I’ve a lot of respect for all clubs – those that think of me and those that don’t think of me,” Mourinho said.
Current PSG boss, Thomas Tuchel, is under pressure, after an indifferent domestic campaign and elimination from the Champions League against Manchester United, despite winning the first leg 2-0 away from home.

Eight more suspects arrested over killing of Lagos Bureau de Change operators

The police in Lagos say they have arrested eight more suspects allegedly involved in the recent killing of a police sergeant and two Bureau de Change operators in Ikorodu area of the state.
A police source told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday that the suspects were arrested at an abandoned construction company in Odogunyan area of Ikorodu, where they allegedly used as their base.
“They were arrested at about 10am on Tuesday at AKS construction company abandoned building. One of the suspects escaped, while his locally made pistol was recovered,” the source told NAN.

Spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, DSP Bala Elkana, had on May 9 said three suspects were arrested in connection with the killing of three persons in Ikorodu. Two bodies of the victims were dumped inside a septic tank.
According to Elkana, the Command on March 14 received a complaint from Ikorodu area that some unidentified persons approached one Alhaji Yakubu Musa and Alhaji Hassan Umaru, both operators of Bureau de Change at Benson area, Ikorodu.
He said the suspects informed them that they have a relation who returned from overseas and needed to sell $10,000 (about N3.5 million), stressing that they initially requested that the payment will be made in a bank at Ikorodu.
Elkana said on getting to the bank, the suspects moved the operators to an unknown destination and started demanding for ransom from their friends and relatives.
He said despite paying the sum of N1.6 million as ransom, the abductors refused to release the victims and nothing more was heard from them.
“The victims phones remained switched off. The Commissioner of police, CP Zubairu Muazu detailed the Commander, Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) to carryout an investigation into the matter with a view of rescuing the victims and apprehending the suspects.
“Operatives from SARS Ipakodo base led by SP Godfrey Soriwei arrested three suspects. The suspects confessed to the commission of the crime and led operatives to their den at Ikorodu where they dumped the corpses in a septic tank,” he said.
The police spokesman in Lagos, DSP Bala Elkana, did not respond to calls from NAN and text messages seeking confirmation of the arrests.

How I was drugged, gang-raped in Lekki hotel – Lady tells court

A 24-year-old woman (name withheld) on Wednesday narrated to an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court how she was allegedly drugged by her friend at a nightclub and subsequently gang-raped in a hotel in Lekki, Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the woman, the first prosecution witness, testified in the trial of two dropouts of Babcock University – Don-Chima George, 25, and Olusegun Rasak, 28, charged with rape.
Led in evidence by Dr Jide Martins, Director of Public Prosecutions, Lagos State, the witness told the court that she was invited to Kabaal Nightclub situated at Ikoyi, Lagos, by George who was her friend.

The alleged rape victim, who testified for one and half hours, said: “Initially, I did not want to go, I was hesitant, I told Chima but he insisted I come. He also said that his birthday was a few days away and he was to celebrate it.
“I agreed. That was not the first time we had gone out together as friends so there was nothing out of the ordinary. He asked me to meet him at the De-Lankaster Hotel. We were supposed to leave from there to the club.
“I got there because I knew where it was. Segun Razak was there in Chima’s room already; I waited a few minutes for everyone to get ready, and we left the hotel to go to the club.
“We got there, nothing out of the ordinary happened; while at the club, at about 4am, I told Chima I was tired and wanted to go home.”
She told the court that George gave her a glass of Hennessey and Coca cola to drink, saying that the drink was the only one she had at the club before she dropped off George at the De-Lankaster Hotel.
“I drove and Chima was in the car with me, and I had to drop him at the hotel. Segun Razak drove his car and had his friends in his car. We made a few stops at Automated Teller Machines to get some money for the Lekki Toll Gate.
“From there, we proceeded to the hotel, when we got there, I proceeded to say hello to the other occupants of Segun’s car.
“When I went into the reception area, I found a mutual friend of ours called Foluso; he was pretty drunk. Being the person that I am, I decided not to let him stay in the reception area. I helped him and took him up to Chima’s room.
“I knocked on the door and I did not hear anyone answer, but I opened the door because the door was already open because the door was bad.
“I got my friend inside the room and put him on the bed. After I got him on the bed, I kept talking to him to make sure that he was okay.
“While he was lying down, I was watching a movie on my phone and from that moment, I do not recollect anything because I passed out, which was out of the ordinary because I usually remember when I fall asleep,” she said.
At this point, the witness broke down in tears, narrating how, in her subconscious state, she was allegedly gang-raped by George and Razak.
She said: “My next recollection after passing out was being in a state that I wasn’t in ordinarily. I felt drunk but I knew I wasn’t because I did not drink enough to make me drunk.
“I felt weak and I could feel hands grabbing me and I could also hear a voice in the room which I knew to be Chima’s voice and I felt Segun on top of me having sex with me.
“I felt his (Segun) dreadlocks on my body because he had dreadlocks. I remember trying to push him off as he was touching me. He was touching my breasts and I could feel another pair of hands on my thighs.
“I blacked out and came up again a second time and I could feel somebody fingering me. I knew I heard Chima’s voice and I couldn’t recall what he was saying, and I felt myself being penetrated again. I tried my best to say no.
“I believe it was Chima who penetrated me again. I believe it was Chima because I heard him asking if I was awake after all of that; I blacked out again, and at that point, I knew both of them had had sex with me.
“I was in a state where I was not conscious but I had a sense that I could hear them. I woke up around 7am. When I woke up, I was confused and I was trying to recall what happened.
“I did not consent to the penetration, I am 100 percent sure I am not in a relationship with both of them.”
The witness said that when she woke up, she confronted George who denied any form of sexual relations between them.
“I could feel my vagina sore; I knew that a sexual act had happened. When I woke up, Chima was in the room with me; he was sitting in a chair opposite the bed. He was on his phone.
“I asked, `Chima what happened last night?’ He said, `Nothing’. By this time, Segun Razak was not present in the room. I asked the second time, and he said, `Nothing’. I asked him straight, `Did we have sex last night?’
“He said, ‘No’ and I told him: `If we didn’t, why is my underwear (pant) not on?’ He did not say anything. I started looking for my underwear.
“I was thinking that this is my friend, he would not do that to me. I finally found my underwear under the duvet, I grabbed it, grabbed my wig and car keys and went downstairs,” she said.
The witness said that she left the hotel in tears, shock and confusion, and did not want to go home in her traumatised state.
The witness told the court that she informed her trusted friend called Musa and his girlfriend, Seyi, about the alleged incident.
“Musa was angry, he asked me where the hotel was. At first, I did not want to tell him, I just wanted to go home and forget it ever happened but he told me I cannot let them get away with it.
“He informed his older sister, Bisoye, and they all rallied and went to the hotel. They went with a police escort to the hotel. When we got there, I stayed inside the car and they went to get them inside the hotel.
“Musa’s car was tinted so they did not know I was in the car, they brought them out so I could see them but they could not see me.
“I could hear them being questioned. They did not verbalise that they did it but I could tell from their body language that they knew they were caught.
“When these were going on, people started coming outside,” she said.
The woman told the court that she went to Maroko Police Station where Musa, Bisoye and she made statements, adding that on Feb. 5, the case was reported to the Gender Unit of the state police command.
She said that she went to the Amethyst Hospital, Lekki, and the Mirabel Center, for medical examination.
The woman testified that her friends who reported the alleged crime were victimised by the families of the defendants.
“They asked me to drop the case but even after asking me to drop the case, they went ahead to arrest my friend.
“I feel betrayed most especially by Chima. You were supposed to be my friend. I have no personal relationship with Segun Razak, I only know him as Chima’s friend.
“I have never been to Segun’s house; I have never met his parents or his other family members. I knew Chima as a friend, I have met his dad, I remember his father telling me how he thought I was a good influence on him.
“For all these to happen, I feel hurt, I feel betrayed,” she said.
NAN reports that the defendants are alleged by the police to have committed the offences on Feb. 3, from 5.00am to 7.00am at De-Lankaster Hotels, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.
While at a nightclub, the defendants allegedly mixed the complainant’s drink with a substance that rendered her unconscious.
The police alleged that the defendants took turns to rape the woman in the hotel and videotaped the sexual offence.
According to the prosecution, the offences contravene Sections 258 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Justice Abiola Soladoye adjourned the case until June 13 for continuation of trial.
