PSG president risks 2 years jail term over bribery allegations

Nasser Al-Khelaifi, Paris Saint-German FC president is currently facing trial over bribery allegations. If found guilty, the billionaire would be jailed for 28 months.

Al-Khelafi is being accused of offering former FIFA secretary general, Jerome Valcke, the use of his villa in Sardinia, Italy, as a favor ahead of the television rights process for the 2026 and 2030 competitions.

The Swiss Federal Criminal Court in Bellinzona has been told that beIN Media Group where Al-Khelaifi is the chairman has been awarded the world cup TV right in the Middle East and Africa without being put up for tender.

Al-Khelaifi, however, claims that they paid full market value for the rights.

FIFA secretary-general, Jerome Valcke according to court proceedings requested Al-Khelaifi’s help in buying the villa in Sardinia while negotiation for the world cup TV right was ongoing between beIN and FIFA.

Allegedly, Al-Khelaifi bought the villa for around €5million and gave it to a close associate’s brother through which Valcke gained access. The FIFA secretary general managed to avoid paying around £1.66million.

Prosecutors request that if the PSG president is found guilty, he should be sentenced to 28 months jail term and Valcke, a three-year sentence.

Both men, however, have denied allegations slammed against them.

You breached the law, court tells Buhari over appointment of judges

A federal high court in Abuja has faulted President Muhammadu Buhari over his decision to forward the names of 11 candidates nominated as judges to the senate for confirmation.

Delivering judgment in a suit filed by Oladimeji Ekengba, an Abuja-based lawyer, Inyang Ekwo, the judge, held that the president contravened the provision of section 256(2) of the Nigerian constitution when he forwarded the names recommended by the National Judicial Council (NJC), to the senate.

In April, the NJC had recommended 33 persons for appointment as FCT high court judges.

But the list generated a controversy as different groups petitioned the president, demanding a rejection of over 20 names “for failing to meet the requirements for appointment”.

Multiple suits opposing the NJC list are pending before the federal high court.

Buhari had selected only 11 people and forwarded their names to the senate for confirmation.

The senate, however, refused to act on the president’s list, saying it lacked the powers to act in the appointment of FCT judges.

But on September 14, Ibrahim Muhammad, chief justice of Nigeria (CJN),  swore in the 11 nominees into office as high court judges of the FCT.

In his suit, Ekengba challenged the president’s powers to choose only 11 out of the 33 candidates.

The judge, who agreed with the plaintiff (Ekengba), held that the only the appointment of heads of courts like the chief judge required confirmation by the senate.

However, Ekwo added that his judgment has no effect on the already appointed judges.

Oyakhilome Foundation launches ‘Loveworld Medical Centre’ to improve trauma care

In order to improve the state of trauma care and emergency response services in Nigeria, Loveworld Medical Missions and Services under the auspices of the Chris Oyakhilome Foundation International has launched a multi-specialty Hospital; Loveworld Medical Centre, Aseese.

The laudable project passionately championed by Man of God; Reverend Chris Oyakhilome will be a well-equipped hospital; staffed with highly skilled medical and allied personnel who are also committed to saving lives.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony to mark the commencement of a medical centre specially designed to save lives, Revd Tom Amenkhienan, Member Central Executive Council Loveworld Incorporated said the mission for embarking on the project is another significant contribution to improving the state of trauma care and emergency response services in Nigeria.

“Injuries are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in both developing and developed countries. About 5.8 million people die each year as a result of injuries, overall, injuries are estimated to be the third most common cause of death globally,” he said.

“Today road traffic injuries (RTIs) are a leading cause of premature death and disability worldwide and in Nigeria, resulting in enormous physical, social, emotional, and economic implications on society,” he added.

Speaking about the reason for siting the location of the hospital along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Amenkhienan said the location will also benefit victims of crashes along the road.

“Statistics show that most road traffic crashes occur on intercity roads and highways, and we also know that road traffic crashes involving motorcycles and commercial buses are among the leading causes of injuries.

“Victims of such crashes form a quota of the patients that will be managed in this hospital,” he added.

He, however, called on other well-to-do Nigerians to support the project.

“We are poised to change the narrative on trauma management in Nigeria through this great initiative and it is on this basis that we are inviting you to support this project and to work with the Loveworld Medical Missions to make the dream of this hospital a reality.

In his remarks, Dr Deola Phillips, Chairperson Trauma Care International Foundation, said the world-class multi-disciplinary health care facility marks another significant contribution from the Loveworld Nation to improving health care services, emergency and trauma response in Nigeria.

Phillips said the project came alive because of the need for integrated and targeted interventions to reduce poor management of traumatic injuries and medical complications.

“We had embarked on some interventions including public safety education programs through the Trauma Care International Foundation and medical outreach programs championed by the Volunteer Medical Corps.

“We have taken a step further through this project, the Loveworld Medical Centre to provide a Christ-centred Medical complex that will meet the needs of critically ill or injured patients, by providing them with access to resuscitation, emergency surgical procedures, specialized medical and diagnostic facilities, intensive and high dependency care wards, blood banking, and other allied services; all of which will be delivered by our highly trained team of specialists.

“We know that we can count on your support and commitment to the swift completion of this project, to the glory of God and to the benefit of humanity,” he added.

Babagana Zulum, governor of Borno state, has announced the donation of a house and N20 million to the family of Dahiru Bako, late commander of 25 task force brigade.

Bako was killed in a Boko Haram ambush on Sunday.

Speaking on Tuesday at the burial of the late commander, Zulum described Bako’s death as a loss to the entire nation.

“Indeed it is a very sad moment, this is not a loss to the family of Late Col. Dahiru Chiroma Bako alone, not to the Nigerian Military, it is a loss to Borno and indeed Nigeria,” Zulum said.

“He was humble and committed in discharging his duties, he is part of the success recorded in degrading Boko Haram insurgency in Borno State.

Independence Day: IPOB orders sit-at-home on October 1

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Wednesday called on Nigerians from the Southeast to observe a sit-at-home on October 1, 2020.

IPOB said the sit-at-home order was aimed at expressing displeasure over the bad governance being experienced in Nigeria.

In a statement issued by its spokesman, Emma Powerful, the group called for total lockdown on October 1.

According to Powerful: “We, the global movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) ably led by our great leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, wish to announce to all Biafrans, friends of Biafra and lovers of freedom all over the world that Biafrans across the globe shall observe a sit-at-home in Biafraland and where permissible in the diaspora, join our Yoruba brethren agitating for Oduduwa Republic, in public protests to mark the October 1, 2020. We, therefore, enjoin all Biafrans and every conscious Nigerian, especially those ethnic nationalities reeling from the triple double blow of state sponsored terrorism, bad governance and economic annihilation, to boycott every government organised ceremony designed to eulogize the failure that Nigeria has become. This is the time to let the world know how disastrously intolerable human existence is in Nigeria today.

“If you want to see an end to terrorism and organised mediocrity, now is the time to register your anger by ensuring that you and your household sit at home on October 1, 2020. Do not risk the life and well-being of your children by allowing them to gather in groups in the open where terrorists may find it easier to blow them up or kidnap them. There is credible intelligence that terrorist groups are planning to slaughter our children should they venture out to celebrate or march on October 1st.

“This order is to highlight our position and resolve as Biafrans that we are no longer interested in propping up a crumbling terrorist state. The leadership of this great movement in conjunction with supporters of Biafra freedom across the globe have concluded every arrangement to let the whole world know and understand that we are no longer part of this shambolic monument to terrorism and failure. As this long expired man made contraption marks her abused independence on October 1st this year, we IPOB will appropriately declare our intention towards the full and irreversible restoration of Biafra sovereignty and independence for all oppressed ethnic groups in Nigeria.

“Complete and total lockdown of Biafraland and other terror ravaged areas of the Middle Belt come 1st of October 2020 is sacrosanct, irreversible and non-negotiable! Wholesale slaughter of innocent Judeo-Christians and state sponsored ethnic cleansing cannot be going on in our land at the same time as fake jamborees are being organised by the same sponsors terror attacks,⁹ in order to deflect our attention away from the imminent danger we are all in.

“We, therefore, urge that all markets, schools and businesses in Biafraland and beyond be shut down as a mark of respect to all those who have died as a result of terrorism against innocent civilians especially Christians, ethnic cleansing in Southern Kaduna and elsewhere across the Middle Belt. Everywhere in Biafraland must be under lock for Nigeria and the world to know that we are all united in our march toward total freedom. There should be no public events or ceremonies in Biafraland to avoid any needless loss of lives.”

ICYMI: UK lawmakers write Commonwealth over insecurity in Nigeria

Some members of the House of Lords, the British upper legislative chamber, have expressed concerns over the persistence of insurgency and farmer/herder crisis in Nigeria.

The lawmakers, in a letter dated September 14 and addressed to Patricia Scotland, secretary-general of the Commonwealth, said the failure of the federal government to protect Nigerians was a breach of its obligations under the Commonwealth Charter.

Referencing a report by the UK All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for International Freedom of Religion or Belief, they said thousands of civilians have been killed and “elements of the Nigerian government may be complicit in violence”.

The lawmakers asked that a probe be carried out into the killings and at the least ensure “adequate protection and aid for those suffering the loss of family members and the destruction of their homes and livelihoods”.

The letter read: “We write to highlight urgent concerns about escalating violence in Nigeria, where attacks led by Boko Haram, Fulani herders, and other Islamist militia continue in northern and central-belt states, with reports of increasing violence in the South-East.

“The state’s failure to protect its citizens is a clear breach of its obligations under the Commonwealth Charter in respect of human rights.

“There is now an urgent need to ensure adequate protection and aid for those suffering the loss of family members and the destruction of their homes and livelihoods.

“And to end impunity by ensuring that complaints related to human rights violations are promptly, independently, and impartially investigated and those responsible are held to account after fair trials.”

The parliamentarians further asked that the issue be raised with the Commonwealth ministerial action group.

“We write, therefore, to ask whether you are able to respond on behalf of the Commonwealth and to raise these urgent concerns with the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group. We would be very willing to meet in person (or perhaps more practically online via zoom) to discuss how we might proceed.”

The letter was co-signed by 18 lawmakers.

SOUTH WEST BOKO HARAM !!! Islamic group issues strong warning to Oduduwa Republic agitators

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has told the protagonists of the proposed Oduduwa Republic to stop using fake Islamic organisations to camouflage as Muslims.

The human rights organization urged Nigerians to be wary of fake Islamic groups masquerading and declaring support for the secessionists.

This was revealed by the Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, in a press statement issued on Wednesday.

“The protagonists of the proposed Oduduwa Republic are desperate. Their desperation has reached a crescendo where they have resorted to dishonourable actions.

“This should jog the conscience of honest Nigerians. There is nothing wrong to have differences and disagreements. It is also normal to have ambition. But what is abnormal and ignoble is to pursue your ambition by hook or crook.

“Those in the irredentist Oduduwa Republic camp have descended so low that they use fake Muslim names and counterfeit Islamic organisations to issue statements in order to confuse Nigerians.

“Their plan is to deceive Nigerians and the rest of the world into believing that Yoruba Muslims are with them in their secession bid. This is not politics. It is outright dishonesty. It is not only cowardly, but ignoble, despicable and condescending. It should be condemned by all men and women of honour.

“Those behind it should be ashamed of themselves and those still supporting them should realize by now that they are being led by the nose.

“We urge Nigerians and the outside world to wake up to the antics of shenanigans masquerading as leaders of Yoruba self-determination groups.

“Yorubas are known to have great qualities of honesty and transparency. That is why the average Yoruba man, based on established Yoruba norms and values, is proud to be called an ‘Omoluabi’, i.e. a man of honour.

“But the reverse is the case with the self-acclaimed leaders of the present Yoruba irredentists. They are another cup of tea entirely.

“They are prepared to get their reckless and ill-thought-out ambition by fair or foul means. Instead of using superior logic to convince Nigerians, they tell lies at will to confuse the gullible. They forge names and concoct counterfeit organisations just by snapping their fingers.

“All these are in an effort to deceive the public. Our question to them is very simple: what kind of ‘republic’ do you want to establish with falsehood? Why must you resort to deception, lies and false propaganda? It is sheer mischief, nothing else.

“This is where Nigerians have to choose: should we follow liars and mischief makers or should we queue behind men of honour and truth? The devil you know is always better than the one you do not know. We may not have gold or silver today, but we will never deceive you with lies or half-truths. Unless you are a certificated gambler, it is too dangerous to follow liars to terra incognito.

“The names of fake Islamic groups like Yoruba Jamatru, Yoruba Islamic Organisation (YISO) and Yoruba Muslim Community have been used to deceive the general public. We alert the press and the good people of Nigeria that these are all fake groups conjured by the secessionist camp.

“Observers of the religious circle in the South West will note that notable Islamic organisations that have been speaking for Muslims in the region are the umbrella body for all Islamic organisations in the zone, the Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN), the Companion, The Criterion, The Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC), FOMWAN, NASFAT, QAREEB, the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), The Muslim Congress (TMC), The Ansaruddeen Society, Nawairudeen Society, MURIC, the Movement for Islamic Cultural Affairs (MICA) and a few others whom space cannot allow us to mention here.

“Most of these Islamic organisations have issued statements rejecting the Oduduwa Republic but the irredentists want to distort history by making forged statements using faceless Islamic organisations.

“This is criminal. We advise journalists to seek clarification from MUSWEN whenever any new group comments on the matter in order to avoid vicarious liability. MUSWEN is our umbrella organization in the South West and all Islamic groups in the South West are registered under it.

“We assert clearly, categorically and unequivocally that none of the so-called Islamic groups which have issued statements in support of a Yoruba Republic are known to us.

“They are fifth columnists created by the separatists with the aim of dividing the Yoruba Muslim community. But they have failed. It is not an Islamic organization if it is not an Islamic organization.

“The Yoruba Ummah is one, virile and indivisible. We therefore charge the Nigerian press to handle the Oduduwa Republic matter with utmost professionalism. The wheat must be separated from the chaff. This is not the time for yellow journalism. Neither is it the time for sensationalism.

“Statements issued by groups that are hitherto unknown in Christian, Muslim and traditional Yoruba circles should be checked and cross-checked. Media houses who publish statements made by fake groups will be held responsible for such statements. A certified journalist is expected to check the source of his or her information. The press must take responsibility.

“Those who allow the name of Yoruba Muslims to be used freely and irresponsibly will answer to Yoruba Muslims because we are going to make sure that we forward reports of fake statements to the security agents and legal action will be taken where necessary. The sources of those statements will be traced and all those involved will have questions to answer. This society must be sanitized.

“There must be consequences for irresponsible and mischievous statements and publications capable of causing the breakdown of law and order in the society. Yoruba Muslims have Allah-given fundamental right to enjoy freedom from molestation, harassment, intimidation and coercion from any quarters. MURIC will do everything possible within the laws of the land to guaranty this right.

“MURIC appeals to Nigerians, particularly the Yoruba people, to shine their eyes. These liars and forgers are advocatus diaboli whose only desire is to cause chaos in society.

“The Yoruba say ‘Omo ti o ba puro yio jale’ i.e. a child that tells lies will soon start stealing. Those who are now misleading you with lies will definitely steal all your money if ever Oduduwa Republic becomes a fait accompli.

“They are not to be trusted. They are making noise today because the tap from which free naira and dollar used to flow has been closed. We assure Nigerians that the agitation will die a natural death when the man they love to hate ends his tenure in 2023.

“To cut a long story short, we warn those agitating for the establishment of Oduduwa Republic to stop deceiving Nigerians by using Muslim names and fake Islamic organisations to issue statements.

“The Nigerian press has a duty to ensure that fake and faceless groups are not allowed to use it to cause disaffection in the society. Media houses are advised to publish only what they can be proud of as members of the noble profession,” he said.
