Pochettino ‘welcomes’ Messi to PSG

Paris Saint-Germain manager, Mauricio Pochettino, has said Lionel Messi is welcome at the club.

Pochettino only took charge of the Ligue 1 champions last week, after Thomas Tuchel was sacked.

He already has Kylian Mbappe and Neymar in his attack, alongside Angel Di Maria.

However, with Messi’s future still unclear at Barcelona, there are speculations he could leave for either PSG or Manchester City.

“We leave the rumours aside. All great players are welcome at PSG,” Pochettino told a press conference.

“Father Christmas has been generous with me, I take this opportunity to thank President Nasser [Al-Khelaifi] and [sporting director] Leonardo for the trust and to be in this great club and back in this house.

“It’s one of the biggest clubs, if not the biggest in the world, so it’s normal that there are rumours. We have just arrived so we leave them aside.”

Deeper Life High School: Police begin investigation into alleged molestation of 11-year-old student

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command, on Tuesday, began an investigation into the alleged molestation, starvation and sexual abuse of one Don Davies, a JSS1 student of Deeper Life High School, Idoro Road Uyo, by some students and management of the School.

The command assured a discreet investigation that would unravel the truth.

Recall that the mother of the boy, Deborah Archibong had raised the alarm of his 11-year-old son’s abuse, which is now trending on social media.

The video on social media caught the attention of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, who ordered the former Commissioner of Education Mrs Enobong Mbobo to investigate the complaints and report to the government for necessary action.

Last week, International Human Right Groups waded into the matter while Akwa Ibom State Government withdrew for police to investigate the incident .

However, the Police Public Relations Officer in the State, SP Odiko Macdon in a statement on Tuesday, said the command received a petition from the victim’s mother and commenced investigations immediately.

According to the statement, “The Akwa Ibom State Police Command is in receipt of a petition by one Mrs Deborah Archibong ( 41), mother of one Don-Davis Iniobong Archibong, aged 11yrs, a student of Deeper Life High School, Idoro Road, Uyo, wherein she alleged that her son, Master Don-Davis Iniobong was inhumanly treated, sexually molested and suffered starvation, against one Mrs Ndidi Solomon (45) and three others.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Amiengheme Andrew ordered a discreet investigation into the matter and the said investigation has commenced immediately.”

He added that the CP enjoined all parties involved to exercise restraint pending the outcome of the investigation, stressing that the outcome would be made public.

Meanwhile, it was gathered that all parties involved in the matter are currently in a meeting with the CP at the State Police headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia, at the time of filing the report.

Sowore: Why I don’t want to go back to Kuje prison

Omoyele Sowore, convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, has told a magistrate court sitting in Wuse zone 2, Abuja, that he does not want to remain at the Kuje correctional centre where he was remanded.

Sowore, Peter Williams, Sanyaolu Juwon, Emmanuel Bulus and Damilare Adenola were arrested on New Year’s eve during a procession organised and led by Sowore.

The police had arraigned the five persons on Monday on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, unlawful assembly, and incitement, and Mabel Segun-Bello, the magistrate, had ordered that they be remanded at the Kuje correctional centre.

However, at the court sitting on Tuesday, the activist said he was denied food, water, and medical attention.

“I wish to report back to the court that contrary to the order of court that we should be given medical attention and welfare, nothing has been done,” he said.

“No medical care, food, water, change of clothes and beddings. I have not even been given food. This is a plot to detain us further and inflict maximum injury.

“We were left outside for over two hours yesterday. They refused to accept us because of COVID-19 protocol. It was the CP who called the comptroller general and forced them to detain us.

“I don’t want to go back to Kuje. I was brought from a facility and I don’t mind going back there because my doctor can reach me there.”

Responding to why the order of the court was not complied with, Sanda, an officer of the correctional centre who escorted the defendants, said: “The time they came in yesterday was very late. Dr Ajayi had closed and they actually were kept in a solitary place because of COVID-19.”

Mabel Segun-Bello, the chief magistrate, asked the defendants if they would prefer to return to the police station where they were initially detained, Kuje correctional centre, or the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID).

Sowore, who spoke on behalf of all the defendants, said they would prefer the FCIID.

Making a formal application, Marshal Abubakar, counsel to the defendants, affirmed the decision of his clients.

“Our application is that in view of the defendants’ concerns, we would be asking that the defendants be remanded at a facility that can offer access to doctor, lawyers, food, change of clothes and water within the Abuja metropolis. Preferably, FCIID area 10,” he said.

However, Adama Musa, prosecution counsel, objected to moving the defendants to FCIID.

“We vehemently oppose the remand of the defendants in the custody of the police on the ground that the defendant has previously made allegations of torture against the police,” Adama said.

“The right place for them to be is the correctional centre.”

After placing a call directly to the commissioner of FCIID in open court to inquire if there is space to accommodate the defendants, the chief magistrate ordered that they be remanded at the FCIID, Area 10, Abuja pending the determination of their bail application.

She also ordered that the accused persons be given access to medical care, sufficient food, good water and fresh air.

The chief magistrate also directed that Damilare Adenola, the third defendant, should be given access to internet facility under strict supervision to enable him continue his online school programme.

Although the court had fixed Tuesday to hear and rule on the bail application, due to copious submissions canvassed by both the counsel to the prosecution and the defendant, the chief magistrate was unable to reach a decision.

Ruling on the bail application will be delivered on January 8.

Igbo people cannot unite – Chimamanda blows hot

Award-winning Nigerian author, Chimamanda Adichie has said southeast people cannot unite to work towards the actualization of an Igbo presidency.

According to the celebrated writer, it is ironic that people of the Southeast who can’t unite to ensure a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction, are pushing for Biafra actualization.

Speaking with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, the popular writer insisted that there is no Biafra at the moment.

She maintained that the people of the Southeast need to restrategize politically to achieve Biafra.

According to Adichie: “There is no Biafra. There are new movements. But for me, it’s a question of being practical. Where would the border be? What is propelling these movements is a sense of marginalization, which I think is completely valid.

“Quite frankly, I’ve observed the terrible leadership that we have in the south-east.

“Igbo people cannot unite. If for example, we say we want an Igbo president, why then are we talking about Biafra. There is a lot of political work we need to do in the Southeast.

“We need to do a lot of rethinking on how we can strategize politically before we can talk about Biafra.”

Osoba: There’s a gentleman agreement that a southerner will succeed Buhari

Olusegun Osoba, former governor of Ogun state, says during the merger of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013, an agreement was reached that the presidential candidate of the party for the 2023 general election will come from the south.

In the build-up to the 2015 general election, three political parties merged to form the APC.

The three political parties were the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).

Speaking on Tuesday when he featured on an ARISE Television’s programme, Osoba, a founding member of the APC, said the agreement was that the north will produce the president in 2015 while the chairman of the party will come from the south.

He said the agreement stated that after President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure, the next president will come from the south.

He said for the 2023 election, the south-south, south-east and south-west regions can put up candidates for the party’s primary and anyone who wins the election will be the presidential candidate of the APC.

“We had a clear gentlemanly understanding that the northern part of the country will produce the president when we did the merger in 2013. And the chairman of the party will then come from the south,” he said.

“We have had a president for six and a half years now from the north in APC. The president will be there for eight years until 2023. The chairmanship has moved from chief Bisi Akande in south-west to John Oyegun from south-south and then from John Oyegun to Adams Oshiomhole, also from south-south.

“Of course, at the end of the tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari, the gentlemanly arrangement is that the presidency will come to the south and I talk of the south in terms of the two territories that were forced to amalgamate in 1914 which means the south-south, the south-east and the south-west zones which are also not in the constitution can bid and should be allowed to produce the next president for this country.

“Therefore, those from the south-east, south-south and south-west can put up candidates for the party’s primary and whoever emerges from the primary can then be the candidate of our party.

“That is the gentlemanly understanding that we reached when we were doing the merger arrangement.”

Osoba defected from the APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) after falling out with Ibikunle Amosun, a former governor of Ogun, before the 2015 general election.

But he returned to the ruling party after APC chieftains in the south-west had a reconciliatory meeting with him in 2016.

His comment on power shift comes two days after Ibrahim Shekarau, senator representing Kano central, said zoning is not in the constitution of the APC.

Nigerian govt. dragged to UN over detention, “torture” of Sowore

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has sent a complaint to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention over the “detention, torture and other ill-treatment of journalist Omoyele Sowore and four other activists.”

Omoyele Sowore, Juwon Sanyaolu, Peter Williams, Emmanuel Bulus and Damilare Adenola were on Monday ordered to be remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre pending the consideration of their bail applications on Tuesday (today).

The order was given by a Magistrates’ Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, following their arrest on New Year’s Eve for holding a protest against bad governance.

However, SERAP in a statement on Tuesday by its deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare, said the detention of the activists constitutes an arbitrary deprivation of their liberty because it does not have any legal justification.

In the complaint dated 4 January 2021, SERAP said: “The Working Group should request the Nigerian authorities to withdraw the bogus charges against Mr. Sowore and four other activists, and to immediately and unconditionally release them.”

According to SERAP: “The arrest, continued detention and torture and ill-treatment of Mr Sowore and four other activists solely for peacefully exercising their human rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly is a flagrant violation of the Nigerian Constitution, 1999 (as amended) and international human rights law. They are now facing bogus charges simply for exercising their human rights.”

SERAP also called on the Working Group to “initiate a procedure involving the investigation of the detention, torture and bogus charges against Mr Sowore and four other activists, and to urgently send an allegation letter to the Nigerian government inquiring about the case generally, and specifically about the legal basis for their arrest, detention, torture and other ill-treatment, each of which is in violation of international human rights law.”

SERAP is also urging the Working Group to “issue an opinion declaring that the deprivation of liberty and detention of Mr Sowore and four other activists is arbitrary and in violation of Nigeria’s Constitution and obligations under international human rights law. We also urge the Working Group to call for their immediate and unconditional release.”

SERAP added that “We urge the Working Group to request the Nigerian government to investigate and hold accountable all police officers and security agents suspected to be responsible for the unlawful arrest, continued detention, and torture and other ill-treatment of Mr Sowore and four other activists.”

SERAP also asked the Working Group “to request the Nigerian government to award Mr Sowore and four other activists adequate compensation for the violations they have suffered as a result of their unlawful arrest, arbitrary detention, torture and other ill-treatment.”

SERAP also argued that: “A detention is arbitrary when it is clearly impossible to invoke any legal basis justifying the deprivation of liberty. Article 9(1) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which confirms the right to liberty and freedom from arbitrary detention, guarantees that no one shall be deprived of his liberty except on such grounds and in accordance with such procedure as are established by law.”

The complaint addressed to Mr. José Guevara Bermúdez Chairman/Rapporteur of the Working Group, read in part: “The Human Rights Committee has interpreted this right to mean that procedures for carrying out legally authorized deprivation of liberty should also be established by law and State parties should ensure compliance with their legally prescribed procedures.”

“Pursuant to the mandate of the Working Group, the “Manual of Operations of the Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council” and the publication “Working with the UN Human Rights Programme, a Handbook for Civil Society”, SERAP, a non-governmental human rights organization, can provide information on a specific human rights case or situation in a particular country, or on a country’s laws and practices with human rights implications.”

“SERAP therefore argues that the case adequately satisfies the requirements by which to submit an individual complaint to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.”

“SERAP is therefore seeking an opinion from the Working Group finding the continuing detention of Mr Sowore and four other activists to be arbitrary and in violation of Nigeria’s Constitution and obligations under international law.”

“Accordingly, it is hereby requested that the Working Group consider this Individual Complaint a formal request for an opinion of the Working Group pursuant to Resolution 1997/50 of the Commission on Human Rights, as reiterated by Resolutions 2000/36, 2003/31, and Human Rights Council Resolutions 6/4, 15/18, 20/16, and 24/7.”

“SERAP respectfully requests the Working Group to initiate the procedure involving the investigation of individual cases toward reaching an opinion declaring the detention of Mr Sowore and four other activists to be arbitrary and in violation of international human rights law. To this end, SERAP will pursue the regular communications procedure before the Working Group in order to have the ability to provide comments on any response by the Nigerian government.''

“On the midnight of 1st January 2021, Mr Sowore and four other activists were arrested by the officers of Nigeria Police Force, particularly men dispatched from Apo Division, Abuja, at the #CrossoverWithProtest, a planned procession across the country on New Year Eve. They were reportedly subjected to severe torture and other ill-treatment, and Sowore was left with bruises in his nose and all over his body in an apparently the use of excessive force by the police officers''

“Sowore and four other activists were arraigned at the Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 2 on Monday, 4th January, 2021 on three charges of criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, and attempting to incite others. Sowore denied all the charges, but the Magistrate ordered that he, alongside other activists, be remanded in Kuje Prison. He was denied access to his friends and family for days. The authorities have also refused to provide him with medical attention despite overt marks of torture and other ill-treatment he reportedly suffered.”

Second wave: One in five persons tested in Nigeria has COVID-19

One in five persons tested for COVID-19 in Nigeria is positive, according to official data.

Data from the World Health Organisation (WHO) compiled here show that the country’s positive rate jumped from 4.2 percent to 21.3 percent in the last month.

  • What is COVID-19 positivity rate? It is the percentage of all coronavirus tests that are positive. In other words, the higher the positive tests, the higher the positivity rate.

As of December 3, only 4.2 percent of all coronavirus tests — or roughly one in 25 samples — in Nigeria returned positive.

But as the second wave sweeps across the country, so is the number of positive cases rising.

The WHO data show that the positive rate stood at 21.3 percent as of January 3, a steep rise in the number of positive diagnoses.

WHAT DOES A HIGH POSITIVITY RATE IMPLY?

When a country’s positivity rate for the coronavirus is high, experts believe this indicates how widespread the virus is in the community.

It could also mean that the number of total tests being carried out is too low.

According to Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, “a higher percent positive suggests higher transmission and that there are likely more people with coronavirus in the community who haven’t been tested yet.

“A high percent positive means that more testing should probably be done—and it suggests that it is not a good time to relax restrictions aimed at reducing coronavirus transmission … a high percent positive can indicate it may be a good time to add restrictions to slow the spread of disease.”

Nigeria has had a chronic testing problem since the pandemic, with less than one million tests carried out so far, unlike South Africa that has tested over 6.7 million samples.

Data from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) situation reports shows the country’s testing capacity still hovers between 35,000 and 45,000 weekly.

Politicians can’t seize power in America – Joe Biden

United States’ president-elect, Joe Biden, has maintained that politicians cannot seize power in the country, because power has to be given by the people.

“In America, politicians can’t assert, take, or seize power. It has to be given by the American people. We can’t ever give that up.

“The will of the people must always prevail,” Biden tweeted on Tuesday.

The 78-year-old Democratic candidate emerged winner in the November presidential election.

Biden’s comment comes as Georgians take to the polls for two closely-watched US Senate runoffs.

The polls could shape the first years of the new Democratic presidency.

US President, Donald Trump and Biden are in Georgia for the battle of the Senate seats.

For nearly 20 years, Georgia had voted reliably Republican in the presidential election and Senate contests.

Nigerians in trouble: FG hikes electricity tariff again

The Federal Government has given Nigerians bitter pills to swallow in the New Year with the reported hike in electricity tariff again.

This is coming two months after the government forced on Nigerians increase in tariff, with crazy bills being clamped on the people in the name of estimated bills.

Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, is said to have given the nod for the hike in tariff, taking effect from January 1, 2021.

The commission was said to have announced the tariff hike in the December 2020 minor review of the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) and Minimum Remittance Order, according to The Punch.

NERC chairman, Sanusi Garba is said to have signed the MYTO giving effect to the hike in tariff, superseding the previous hike order.

According to the commission, the increase in tariff was necessitated by the 14.9 per cent inflation rate rise in November 2020 and foreign exchange of N379.4/$1 as of December 29, 2020.

The commission also cited available generation capacity, the United States inflation rate of 1.22 per cent and the Capital Expenditure of the power firms before the tariff was raised, as reasons for the increase in electricity tariff.
