Report: 53 traditional rulers killed in violent attacks in 10 years

A new report by SBM Intelligence, Nigeria’s geopolitical intelligence platform, says 53 traditional rulers were killed in violent attacks in Nigeria in the past 10 years.

In the report issued on Wednesday, the organisation said 35 of them were killed in the last five years — indicating an accelerating trend.

SBM Intelligence also expressed displeasure over the rising cases of violent incidents in the country.

“In the decade since November 2011, 53 traditional rulers have been killed in various violent incidents across Nigeria,” the organisation said.

“This unfortunate trend appears to be accelerating as 35 of them were killed in the second half of the decade in review, that is between 2016 and now, while the incidents in which those killings happened have become more violent.”

In September, Da Bulus Chuwang Jang, a traditional ruler in Barkin Ladi LGA of Plateau state, was killed by gunmen.

In November, Israel Adeusi, the Olufon of Ifon in Ose LGA of Ondo state, was shot dead while on his way from a meeting of monarchs in Akure, the state capital.

A month after, gunmen killed Emmanuel Mba, traditional ruler of Oruku community, Nkanu-east LGA in Enugu state.

In its previous report, SB Morgen Intelligence said said the number of internally displaced people (IDPs) in Nigeria is almost the same with countries that are officially at war.

It said mass atrocities in the country are linked to the proliferation of small arms.

Fulani herdsmen kill hunters in Ogun

Two hunters were said to have been killed by suspected herdsmen in Okun-Owa, Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Residents of the community said they discovered the bodies of the slain hunters in Oko-Agerige.

DAILY POST reports that leaders of the community have written a letter to Okun-Owa, urging him to save their souls.

According to Asiwaju Sina Ogunbambo, the leader of the community, the hunters were killed by herdsmen.

Ogunbambo said they were declared missing on Saturday after they failed to return home a night they embarked on hunting.

“A search party went to the forest and their shocking discovery was the corpses of the two young men,” Ogunbambo said in the letter sent to Gov Abiodun.

Quoting sources who visited the scene, he disclosed that there were gun bullets lodged on the bodies of the dead hunters; adding that cow dungs and footprints were also seen at the scene of the crime.

This, he said, made them to arrive at the conclusion that the perpetrators were herdsmen.

Ogunbambo appealed to Gov Abiodun to act fast by protecting the lives of Okun-Owa residents.

The Ogun State Police Spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the death of the hunters.

Oyeyemi stated that the hunters were murdered while searching for some people that were earlier kidnapped in the forest.

Kano residents prefer Hisbah to police, says Shekarau

Ibrahim Shekarau, a former governor of Kano, says residents of the state rely on the Hisbah board more than the police.

Shekarau said this in an interview with Channels Television on Wednesday.

He stressed the need for community policing as a means to addressing insecurity in the country.

“Security is the business of every citizen, and that is why the issue of community policing as far as I’m concerned, is the key,” he said.

“Within the first one or two years when we introduced the community policing through the Hisbah boards, we virtually eliminated 90 percent of the vices in the society and we have peace. I believe this is part of what Kano is still enjoying.

“I think the earlier we understood this idea of community policing, the better for all of us and the government has to be directly involved.

“Ask anybody on the streets of Kano today, people would prefer to go to the offices of the Hisbah board to report their cases or any incident within the society far more than going to the police divisional offices or even to the court.”

The former governor also noted that in addressing insecurity, the reasons and root cause of attacks by bandits need to be figured out.

“As a guidance counselor, I believe every act has a reason. We need to go back to the roots to find out the causes and reasons. It’s not just about using force, arresting and prosecuting these bandits and Boko haram. We need to have more of intelligence reporting,” he said.

Removing minimum wage from exclusive list will enslave workers – NLC, TUC

Workers on the platform of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), have declared that any attempt to remove the minimum wage from the exclusive list is an attempt to enslave Nigerian workers.

The workers made this disclosure when they protested against the removal of minimum wage from the exclusive list.

The workers who protested in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on Wednesday advised the Oyo State House of Assembly not to be part of the Bill that would return Nigerians workers into slavery.

The unionists noted that the protest was organized to kick against the planned removal of the minimum wage from the exclusive list to the concurrent list.

The protesting workers who began the protest at the NLC Secretariat took their protest to Agodi and ended at the State House of Assembly.

TUC chairman, Mr Emmanuel Ogundiran, warned the Oyo State Assembly not to be part of what would destroy the Nigerian economy and further throw Nigerians into the unemployment market.

Ogundiran said that some individuals were toying with the welfare of the average Nigerian worker.

He said, “Removing the minimum wage from the exclusive list to concurrent list means it is no more the Federal Government that have the final say on the issue but both the state and the FG can adjudicate on it.

“It means the governors can decide on the amount to be paid as minimum wage and this will further enslave the workers,” Ogundiran said.

He called on the Oyo State House of Assembly not to be part of the bill and not to consider the passage of the bill, describing it as anti-workers bill.

NLC Chairman, Mr Kayode Martins, said that the union would do what is necessary to ensure that the bill does not see the light of the day.

He added that the governors earn nothing less than N500 million as security vote and are telling Nigerian workers that N30,000 minimum wage was too much.

Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi commended the union for the peaceful protest.

Fadeyi said the bill before its passage imust go through the 36 States Houses of Assembly and assured the unions that the State Asssembly would take the views of the people before taking decision on the bill.

He added that the bill would not see the light of the day irrespective of pressures from many quarters.

Bandits outnumber Nigeria’s security men in Zamfara state

The Emir of Anka Alhaji Attahiru Ahmad has painted a grim picture of the banditry in Zamfara state and why it been intractable.

Ahmad told an audience that included the new military service chiefs and Governor Bello Matawalle in Gusau on Tuesday, that the bandits outnumber the combined force of Nigerian soldiers and police, deployed to the area.

According to him, Nigeria has deployed fewer than 5,000 securitymen to fight the banditry, as against the 30,000 bandits.”

A way out, Ahmad said, is to follow the pacificatory and dialoguing approach by Governor Bello Matawalle.

Though he called for the deployment of soldiers, he told the service chiefs to embrace “the peace and dalogue initiative of Governor Matawalle.

Emir Ahmad also disclosed the shocking kidnapping of about 100 miners operating between Anka and Maru Local Government Areas.

Ten other people were killed by the bandits.

The kidnapping occurred 2 March, the same day that another set of bandits captured 279 schoolgirls of Jangebe Government Science Girls Secondary School.

Ahmad, who is also the Chairman of the state Council of Chiefs said the kidnapping of miners was over-shadowed by the abduction of the 279 GGSS, Jangebe girls, by another bandits’ gang which took place on the same day.

“The bandits have been attacking those involved in artisanal mining and carting away their money and property.

“There is a disconnect between miners and bandits in the state, so we were surprised when the declaration of ‘no fly zone’ was recently slammed on our state over suspected arms supply and illegal mining when the state does not even have an airport.

“We know that there are states with more security challenges than Zamfara and we expected that if such order would be issued, it should also cover such states.

“Our artisanal miners, who are licensed, have been very helpful to the state’s economic growth and they have played significant roles in ameliorating the hardship faced by IDPs in the state by supporting them,” he said.

The first class traditional ruler, who called for more security personnel to fight banditry in the state, noted that “the peace and dialogue initiative of Governor Matawalle has become necessary.

Ahmad however assured the service chiefs that people in the state would continue to pray for the success of security men and urged the CDS to ensure that there is synergy among all segments of the military during operations in order to block all escape routes against the criminals.
Responding, the CDS commended the role played by the traditional rulers in fighting crime and urged them to continue to engage their subjects in giving credible information that would lead to the containment of bandits.

On his part, Matawalle assured that his administration would intensify its peace and dialogue as well as support the security in sustaining onslaught against unrepentant bandits.
