CEO in court for using N10m mistakenly deposited to his account

One Olukunle Owolabi, the Chief Executive Officer of an oil and gas company,  was on Tuesday arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate’s Court, sitting at Igbosere, for allegedly using the N10m mistakenly deposited into his bank account.
The man, who resides in Ogudu GRA, Lagos, is facing a 1-count charge of fraud preferred against him by the Police.
The defendant, 53, alongside his company, was charged before Magistrate F. O. Botoku.
The prosecutor, Chinedu Njoku, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on April 5.
Njoku said the incident occurred at 2, Tinubu Street, Lagos Island.
According to him, at about 11a.m the defendant fraudulently converted N10 million belonging to a bank, which was deposited into his account by Telecorev Nigeria Limited on March 31.
The prosecutor told the court that the defendant’s account was last used by him in 2016.
He said he suddenly got an alert from the bank, he transferred the entire money into his account in another bank and used it in paying off his debts.
The defendant, during his arraignment, told the court that on March 31, he received an alert of N10 million.
Olukunle said he thought the money was from one of his customers or debtors.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Magistrate Botoku granted him bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.
She said the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of payment of tax to Lagos State government with verification of addresses.
Botoku, however, adjourned the case to December 19 for a mention.
The offence, he said is punishable under section 285 (5a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

99 percent importers evade duty - Nigeria customs

99 percent importers evade duty, says Customs boss

The Comptroller-General, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Col. Hameed Ali (Rtd) Thursday said that 99 per cent of the nation’s importers are non-compliant with the customs duty and charges.
According to him, the importers are unpatriotic to Nigeria even when they pay duty to other countries they deny theirs its dues.
Ali, who was speaking as the Chief Host at the public presentation of the book “Appraisal of Crime of Smuggling in Nigeria,” in Abuja, pointed out that the belief of a typical Nigerian, is that he does not owe his country any obligation.

Narrating his encounter with an importer, who settled all the charges for two cars  in Benin Republic and Niger Republic and evaded Nigeria’s, he said that  “somebody picked up two cars from Benin Republic, when he landed in Benin he paid every charges, he move them to Niger, and paid every charges he is supposed to pay.
“But those cars are destined for Nigeria. When he now comes to Nigeria, he decided to take an un-costumed route and brought those cars to Nigeria. And when we did apprehend those vehicles the question I asked him is why are you so unpatriotic?
“You could pay to Benin Republic, you could pay to Niger, and then coming to your own home, you don’t want to pay. He said the duty is too high.
“And I said then why did you buy the two cars in the first place?  This is the mentality of the Nigerian; he does not believe that he owes anything to his own country.”
The country, he said, cannot make progress in a situation, where people are not complying with the law and unfortunately, all that Nigerians think is how to circumvent the law.
He commended the author of the book, Musa Omale for not allowing his knowledge, experience and writing skills to die.
The customs boss noted that the book has made the job of the NCS easier and enjoined all the stakeholders to buy and read it.
He assured the author that the Nigeria Customs Service will deploy copies of the books to its libraries and commands.
Speaking with journalists, immediate past president of Association of Nigerian License Customs Agents, Chief Ernest Elochukwu noted that book is an exposure of the dimension of smuggling and the laws that are in place to tackle it.
He said that the fight against smuggling can also be viewed from other angles like the creation of an enabling environment that does not promote smuggling.
This, he said, government can achieve that by making sensible policies in terms of what it bans and does not ban.
He submitted that “when there is so much of ban in the list of items that could be imported into the country, especially if they are essential items, the issue of smuggling becomes inevitable.”
Meanwhile, the author said that what motivated him is that he has been in the Customs for past 26 years and as an experience officer about the level of damage of smuggling to the economy and decided to turn his research for PhD on smuggling into a book.- The Nation

20 Nigerian girls sold off in Libya

A Nigerian returnee from Libya has spoken of how 20 Nigerian girls were sold off as slaves in Libya.
He also gave a chilling account of how he and others were fleeced and transported to Libya with a promise of better life in Europe, only to land in penury and end up in jail in the north African country.
Many of the returnees, who are camped in Benin-City, the Edo State capital, look skinny and exhausted. Some of the women are carrying babies, whose fathers are not known.

Alex Otoide is one of the 168 Nigerians evacuated from the north African country, and are currently being rehabilitated by Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki.
The governor has promised to train them in skills required to reintegrate them back into the society.
Otoide said he witnessed the sale of 20 Nigeria girls in the prison where they were all kept.
“They sold about 20 girls in the night. I saw it. It was God that saved me.”
Recounting his ordeal, he said: “I left Nigeria with N500,000. I spent six months in Libya jail after the man that took my money ran away.
“We were 55 that travelled from here to Libya, 25 people died in the desert.
“More than seven people died from hunger and thirst inside the prison.
”Can’t you see how I look lean and hungry? I need to go for treatment.”
He said a fellow whose name he gave as Charles also a Nigerian, collected the N500,000 from him.
Apart from persuading them to travel, he also collected money in addition to running a transit camp in Libya for those travelling illegally across the Mediterranean to Europe.
Some of the deportees said Charles collected money for the purpose of taking them to Europe only to abandon them in Libya.
They claimed that Charles had several bank accounts with different names through which he collected money from victims.
He is also accused of running the Libyan camp where Nigerians are kept for days without food.
Another returnee Osas Blessing said Charles is among those nicknamed “burgers” or “connection man” on the Libya route.
He said: “I gave Charles N450,000 but when I got to Libya he increased it to N600,000. He is very wicked. He does not care for human life. He is a Benin man. He will say if you die you die. He pushed us into the sea at the wrong time.
“I heard he just left Nigeria with new passengers to Libya. He has frustrated many Nigerians.”
Another returnee who refused to give his name said another Nigerian known simply as “Biafra” was responsible for many atrocities committed against Nigerian migrants in Libya. - The Nation

Really??? APC rep vows not to seek re-election — because ‘we didn’t achieve much with 2017 budget’

APC rep vows not to seek re-election — because ‘we didn’t achieve much with 2017 budget’
Babale Bashir, a member of the house of representatives, says he has no intention of seeking re-election into the lower legislative chamber.
Bashir said this on Wednesday on the floor of the house while contributing to the debate on the 2018 budget.
The lawmaker, who represents Minjibir/Ungogo constituency of Kano state, said the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration achieved little “with the capital aspect of the 2017 budget”.
He wondered what would be said about the lawmakers’ work when they leave parliament.
While noting that the APC entered a social contract with Nigerians in 2015, the lawmaker said the party had up to 2019 to deliver to deliver on its promises.
The lawmaker said the ruling party should use the 2018 and 2019 budgets to fulfill its promises to Nigerians.
“Let me inform the house that I have no intention of coming back. We didn’t achieve much with the capital aspect of the 2017 budget. In 2015, we entered a social contract with Nigerians. When we leave here, what would be said about what we have done,” Bashir said.
“Because of poor revenue generation, the question is what have you done to increase revenue generation, yet Mr President came and talk about the huge chunk voted for capital expenditure, we need to make a distinction between administrative and developmental component of the budget
“Some ministries spend N300 million out of the N500 million voted for capital project on administrative training.
“Another issue we need to look at is the projected oil production of 2.5 million barrel per day, and the current oil price of $62, we need to ask ourselves, why is the oil price currently at this price?
“There are two reasons; geo-political upheaval in the Middle-East. If today we have some peace in this region, the oil price would come down, and the second reason is the little peace we are having in the Niger Delta. If today there is any crisis in the Niger delta then we are going to have a drop in the production volume.
“I have not seen any step taken by the government to address this uncertainty, yes there is the Ogoni clean up.
“This is a clarion call for us to do the needful, we have till 2019 to deliver the promises we made to Nigerians. So this budget and 2019 budget is the only hope we have. We need to shine a microscopic light on the budget where ever there is capital development.” - Cable Nigeria

Arsenal boss praises Ozil 'fight'

Wenger thinks Mesut Ozil is "showing he can fight" after he played a starring role in Arsenal's 5-0 win over Huddersfield on Wednesday.
Arsenal laboured for fluency and precision after claiming the early lead, but eventually took full control in the final quarter.
The striker, Ozil dominated the late proceedings, ending the night with two assists and a goal of his own.
"Nobody has to convince us he's a great football player," said Wenger, of Ozil, whose contract with the Gunners expires next summer.
"Everybody knows in the stadium he's a great football player, but at the moment as well he shows he can fight.
"Our job is to encourage people to fight, but I think he always covered the distances in games, but he's at an age where he's more mature and understands what is more important and what is less important.
"Everybody wants to be acknowledged for his quality, and the judgements are sometimes harsh in a footballer's job. But overall I believe the majority of people here love him, and always loved him.
"When you look at the percentage of possession during a game, no matter what the game is, he always wants the ball. He never hides, he's always available.
"If you are dominated you touch the ball less, but when you win the ball, he always wants the ball."
Although Arsenal were comfortable winners against Huddersfield, they suffered a blow as Alexandre Lacazette went off injured.

Face of killer !!! Apo Six: Nigeria Police Reinstates Officer Who Killed Igbo Traders

The Nigerian Police Force has ordered the reinstatement of Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Danjuma an officer responsible for the extra-judicial of killing five young auto spare parts traders and a young woman on June 7, 2005, in Apo township, a satellite settlement at the Federal Capital Territory in  Abuja.
The victims, Ekene Isaac Mgbe, Ifeanyi Ozor, Chinedu Meniru, Paulinus Ogbonna, Anthony Nwokike, and Augustina Arebu, were returning from a nightclub when they were stopped at a police checkpoint and extra-judicially murdered by a contingent of policemen led by Danjuma.
The directive for the officer’s reinstatement was contained in a Police wireless message (DTO 1718000/11/2017) addressed to the Police Service Commission. According to the wireless message, obtained by SaharaReporters claims the reinstatement of the officer Danjuma and other police officers included in the message following their successful "appeal of their dismissal from the Force". The officers are Danjuma Ibrahim, a Deputy Commissioner of Police; Fausat Azeez Oduwole, an Assistant Commissioner of Police; Bethram C Onuoha, Chief Superintendent,  Okwuonu Allwell, a Chief Superintendent; Nonyerem Ejike Akubuike; a Deputy Superintendent of Police; Barakiya Yusuf and Onuorah Emmanuel, both Assistant Superintendents of Police. However, Oseni Tajudeen, whose appeal was rejected, had his dismissal upheld.
DCP Ibrahim Danjuma, the wireless message showed, will be paid the arrears of his salary dating back to June 18, 2005, and sent on a refresher course. Danjuma was revealed as the officer who shot some of the traders and stranged the only female traveling that night they encountered the bloodthirsty police team.
The killing of the six persons provoked national outrage. The police had claimed that the victims, aged between 21 and 25 years, were members of a robbery gang that had shot at the officers at a checkpoint.
However, a judicial panel of inquiry set up by former President Olusegun Obasanjo dismissed the police account as false and recommended the trial of the officers for extra-judicial killings.

The trial dragged for over a decade until two of the officers were sentenced to death in March 2017, curiously, Danjuma was freed by the judge who sat on the case. The officers accused of the killings and eight other police witnesses eventually testified before the panel of inquiry that Ibrahim, the Deputy Commissioner of Police and the most senior of the accused, had ordered the killings.
The report of the panel stated that the victims were at a nightclub located at Gimbiya Street, Area 11, in Abuja that night of June 7, 2005, when they had a face-off with Ibrahim after the only female among the victims, rejected Ibrahim’s romantic advances. - Sahara Reporters

Amazon's boss surpasses $100B net worth to become the first billionaire to hit the milestone since 1999

Amazon's Jeff Bezos surpasses $100 billion net worth

Business mogul Jeff Bezos' net worth jumped above $100 billion on Friday amid optimism for Amazon's Black Friday sales.
Bloomberg reported that the Amazon CEO's fortune surged $2.4 billion to $100.3 billion, after the retailer's shares grew more than 2 percent on Black Friday.
In passing the $100 billion mark, Bezos, 53, has become the first billionaire to hit the milestone since 1999. The last billionaire to do so was Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.
This year alone, Bezos' fortune has increased by $32.6 billion - more than anyone else on the Bloomberg Billionaire Index.
The owner of The Washington Post surpassed Gates as the world's richest person in October, according to Bloomberg. Berkshire Hathaway investor Warren Buffett holds the No. 3 slot on the list.
Unlike Gates and Buffett, Bezos has given relatively little of his fortune to charitable causes. In June, he tweeted a solicitation for ideas on a philanthropy strategy.
"I'm thinking I want much of my philanthropic activity to be helping people in the here and now - short term - at the intersection of urgent need and lasting impact," he wrote. - The Hill

Arsenal boss says Mesut Ozil has not agreed to join Barcelona

Mesut Ozil

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger has denied speculation that Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has already agreed to move to Barcelona when his contract expires at the Emirates. The German is currently in his final year in contract and would be available to join any club on a free after the end of the season.
The player is also said to be on the radar of Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, while recent reports in Spain claimed that Barcelona are also considering him as a cheaper alternative to Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho ahead of the January window.
When asked if the speculation is true, Wenger said, as quoted by Sky Sports, "No. What kind of control can I have over that [speculation]? All these people have agents who can talk to anybody. That doesn't disturb people, that happens all through their career.
"They are honest. I don't question their honesty. Nobody knows what will happen when the players reach the end of their contracts. Our worry is to perform on Sunday, that's it.
"They want to turn up and put in good performances. I have no concerns. I am more concerned about the team performance. Ozil and Alexis are praised when the team is doing well because of them, and when the team doesn't do well they get more criticism.
"I'm more concerned that the team focuses on strong performances. My worry is on Sunday. After that, I will care about the second half of the season later."
Wenger recently admitted that the club may be forced to sell both Alexis Sanchez and Ozil in January if there is no breakthrough in contract negotiations before the transfer window reopens.
Arsenal are in a quandary since two of the north London club's best players will be able to leave the Emirates on free transfers after the end of the season. Both players will be able to talk to clubs in January and secure a pre-contract to join them for a lucrative contract when their tenure ends at the Emirates. - IBT

A Failed Presidency !!! CACOL blasts Nigerian government over plan to built more toll gates

The Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership, CACOL, has described the plans by the federal government of Nigeria to construct more than 48 toll gates in the country as an ‘unfortunate retrogressive slip.’
The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) had during the week announced the plans of the Federal Government to construct over 38 new toll gates at the same spots where they were demolished during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Fashola had also told the Senate Committee on Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) that the tolls would be built through private concessionaires and fully commercialized.
Reacting to the development, Debo Adeniran, the Executive Secretary of CACOL in a statement, said the toll gates were part of the legacies of military misadventures into governance in the country.
He said toll gate is a drain pipe for unscrupulous merchants of power, official scamming of unwary public and often times causing irritating traffic gridlock leading to loss of productive man-hour.
His statement reads, “It suffices to note that Mr. Fashola has experimented with this idea when he was at the helms of Lagos State Government.
“He constructed the toll gates on the Ikoyi-Lekki link bridge for instance which eloquently testifies that this project are mere grand designs to extort motorist and never to ameliorate deteriorating transport system.
“In a more civilized, advanced democracy, the Mr. Fashola and this administration would be taken up to justify what the various taxes and levies imposed on the hapless citizens are use for, if tolls are now been constructed by private firms and fully commercialized against the provisions of our extant constitution.
“Nigerians are presently suffering under the heavy yoke of very, bad and deplorable roads across the nooks and crannies of the country.
“It is the expectation of the public that the Minister should been queried by the Senate on why FERMA has gone into self-induced permanent sleep under his watch while our roads have become death traps with high frequency of accidents leading to monumental loss of goods, properties and lives.
“It instructive to note with strong condemnation that out of N25Billion allocated to FERMA in the 2017 budget, only N800Million has thus far been used even as the year comes to an end.”
CACOL further called on all well meaning Nigerians to be weary of the antics of Fashola, nothing that it is manifestly clear that he is yet to deliver any tangible result in any of the three critical ministries under him.
He added, “It is trite to point his announced housing projects which have not taken off are never designed to provide low cost housing for the mass of working and toiling people, not even for the decimated Nigeria middle class but to shelter a few, over-indulged elite class.
“The promised improvement in the generation and distribution electric power remains a delusional mirage. There is no doubt that Mr. Fashola is pushing his three-star ministry along the same path he trekked while governing Nigeria, creating a haven for elites to viciously exploit the masses who are gated off in slum suburbs.
“The return of toll gates and exploitative fares under the guise of privatization and commercialization agenda would unleash un-mitigated hardships on Nigerians particularly less privileged, informal sector workers whose empowerments are needed to re-tunic the ailing economy.
“We call on all well meaning Nigerians, transport stakeholders and relevant government agencies to forcefully speak out against the return of toll gates and extorting toll fares on our roads.” - Daily Post

OMG !!! Man arrested for allegedly defiling 10-year-old daughter

The Imo state police command have arrested one Akarauwa Eke  for allegedly defiling his 10-year-old daughter.
The victim, a primary three pupil at Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Ihiagwa, in the Owerri West Local Government Area of the state, had been living with her father, along with her siblings, since her mother died in 2013.
As revealed the father had come to pick the child from school but the refusal of the child to follow her father home raised suspicion by the people around.
Upon investigation by teachers and villagers, it was discovered that the man had allegedly been defiling his daughter at home.
According to a media source, a non-governmental organisation, Virgin Heart Foundation, said it was partnering Women of Divine Destiny Initiatives, an organisation owned by the wife of the governor of the state, to ensure justice for the girl.
The founder of the Virgin Hearth Foundation, Peace Dike, said the group had taken the victim to a hospital for series of medical examinations.
Dike said, “The suspect is in police custody. We are partnering Women of Divine Destiny Initiatives to ensure that justice is served.
“We are also writing to the Imo State chapter of the Federated International of Female Lawyers to get legal aid for the girl because she has been abused by someone who ought to have protected her.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Andrew Enwerem, said the state Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, had ordered that the matter be charged to court immediately after investigation.
The PRO said, “Under the leadership of CP Ezike, such a weighty allegation will not be swept under the carpe.”

Pope Francis To Embark On Most Dangerous Trip Ever

Pope Francis wearing glasses

The Pope is set to embark on one of the most delicate political dances of his tenure when he leaves for Bangladesh and Burma (Myanmar) this weekend.
The potential pitfalls of this trip are already being compared to his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI’s deadly comments about Islam in 2006 that led to outrage in the Muslim world, the murder of a Catholic nun, and the destruction of several churches.
Many Catholic commentators worry that whatever Francis says on this trip will have a similar effect.
“Pope Francis makes a visit to Myanmar where he risks either compromising his moral authority or putting in danger the Christians of that country,” Thomas Reese, a Jesuit journalist priest, wrote at Religion News Service this week. “I have great admiration for the Pope and his abilities, but someone should have talked him out of making this trip.”
Francis’ voyage comes on the heels of U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s harsh condemnation of the government of Burma and includes stops in both Burma and Bangladesh.
“These abuses by some among the Burmese military, security forces, and local vigilantes have caused tremendous suffering,” Tillerson said on Wednesday. “After a careful and thorough analysis of available facts, it is clear that the situation in northern Rakhine state constitutes ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya.”
If Francis uses the same tone, or even says the word Rohingya, he could set off deadly retaliatory protests against Christians in the region. Muslims of Rakhine state in Burma use the term to define themselves, but it is not recognized by the government, the military, or the large Buddhist population in Burma—they instead claim the Muslim minority are Bengalis who settled in the country illegally.
Charles Maung Bo, Burma’s first-ever cardinal, who was tapped by Francis last year, urged Francis not to use the “R-word” when he met with the pope in Rome ahead of the apostolic visit. “If he doesn’t use it, the international community will say something,” Bo told the Catholic website Crux this week. “If he does use it, then it could be very bad for the military, the government and the Buddhist community.”
Bo says he told Francis that he should use a term like “Muslims of Rakhine state” when he meets with officials in Burma, including Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and the country’s top military brass. For the record, Francis has already used the word when condemning what he called the “persecution of our Rohingya brothers” after violence erupted in August.
Greg Burke, the Vatican spokesman, told reporters at a briefing on Wednesday that the word Rohingya is “not a prohibited word” but would not say whether the pope planned to use it.

After leaving Burma on Nov. 30, Francis will spend two days in Bangladesh, where he will meet a group of Rohingya refugees in Dhaka. More than 620,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled Burma and are living in deplorable refugee camps in Bangladesh.
Father Reese writes that even despite the high stakes, Francis may just be able to pull off the visit without sparking protests. “This is not the first visit of Pope Francis to a troubled land. He visited the Middle East in 2014, and Cuba and the Central African Republic in 2015. Those trips were almost universally deemed successes,” Reese wrote. “If he is equally successful in Myanmar, I will not be surprised to see him walk on water.”
Pope Francis has proved many times that he doesn’t much care about what other people think, especially those who don’t agree with his stance on supporting refugees and the poor.
He has shown no mercy for those who might seek to build barriers, speculating that Donald Trump was “not a Christian” for wanting to construct the Mexican border wall back when he was a candidate for the presidency. He rarely misses an opportunity to preach about the importance of treating refugees and migrants with dignity, even at the cost of national security. - DB
