Meta Unveils ‘Open-Source’ AI Model as Zuckerberg Pushes for More Open Artificial Intelligence



Meta has unveiled a new artificial intelligence model called Muse Glimmer, stepping up its push to make powerful AI technology more accessible outside the company.


The new model is an open-weight AI system designed to run efficiently on personal computers equipped with a single graphics card, potentially making advanced AI more accessible to developers, researchers and businesses without massive computing infrastructure.


A new chapter in Meta’s AI strategy


The launch comes as Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg renews his argument that the future of artificial intelligence should not be controlled exclusively by a small number of technology companies.


Zuckerberg has called for a more open AI ecosystem and has urged US policymakers to reduce restrictions that, in his view, could limit America's ability to compete with China in artificial intelligence.


His latest position comes as Chinese technology companies, including Alibaba, Moonshot and DeepSeek, continue to make significant advances in open-weight AI models.


What makes Muse Glimmer significant?


Unlike conventional closed AI systems, where the underlying model is controlled by the company providing the service, open-weight models give developers considerably more freedom to download, customise and deploy the technology.


Meta says Muse Glimmer has been designed with efficiency in mind, allowing it to operate on a single consumer GPU. That could reduce the hardware and infrastructure costs associated with experimenting with advanced AI.


The move also represents an evolution of Meta's previous open AI strategy. Its Llama family helped establish Meta as one of the biggest supporters of openly available AI models, with Llama models becoming widely adopted by developers around the world.


Zuckerberg looks beyond Muse Glimmer


Meta's latest announcement is not being presented as the end of its AI ambitions.


Zuckerberg has indicated that the company plans to release more powerful models and has also announced plans to release the weights of Muse Spark 1.2, signalling that Meta intends to maintain a significant presence in the open-weight AI race.


The Meta chief has also published a vision for what he describes as a more open future for advanced artificial intelligence, arguing that AI should benefit a broad section of society rather than become concentrated among a handful of companies.


The safety debate


The growing availability of powerful open AI models is also raising questions about safety.


Supporters argue that open models encourage innovation, competition, research and transparency. Critics, however, warn that giving more people access to increasingly capable AI systems could make it harder to control potential misuse.


Meta says it intends to introduce additional safety governance, including involvement from independent directors, as it expands its AI operations.


A major battle for the future of AI


Meta's latest move comes at a critical moment in the global AI race, with American and Chinese technology companies competing to develop increasingly powerful systems.


For developers and smaller businesses, the significance could be substantial: if sophisticated AI models can increasingly run on ordinary high-end computers rather than enormous data centres, the cost of developing AI-powered products could fall dramatically.


The bigger question is whether Meta's open-weight strategy can challenge the increasingly powerful closed models being developed by companies such as OpenAI and Google.


For now, Meta appears determined to make openness a central part of its AI strategy — while simultaneously building increasingly powerful systems behind the scenes.


The AI race is no longer simply about who builds the most powerful model. It is increasingly about who controls how widely that power is distributed.
