New minimum wage: Labour gives FG 14-day ultimatum, nationwide strike

Labour leaders in Nigeria, on Wednesday, cautioned the Federal Government to stop foot dragging on the New Minimum Wage and allow the tripartite committee conclude its job to avoid industrial crisis.

The labour leaders, who are members of the Minimum Wage Committee, at a joint news conference addressed in Lagos, gave the federal government 14 days to ensure that the committee conclude its work or be ready to face industrial action.

Mr. Ayuba Wabba, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, said that the committee was not pleased with the comments alleged to have been made by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige.
According to him, Ngige had last week allegedly said that the committee should adjourn indefinitely to enable him do further consultations with the government.
”We view his supposed pronouncement with great concern, suspicion and outrage”, NAN quoted him as saying.
“This new antic certainly is not acceptable to Nigerian workers, who had expected a New National Minimum Wage since 2016″.
The NLC president said that in the course of the meeting, the committee members had time to consult and received memoranda and inputs from 21 state governments, specialized Agencies of the Federal Government, the Organized Private Sector, Organised Labour and the general public.
Mr Joe Ajaero, President of the United Labour Congress, (ULC) said that issues concerning the minimum wage has been concluded and that the committee was expecting government representative to pronounce their own figure.
Ajaero, however, refused to give a likely figure that could be approved as minimum wage and also did not give a clear answer on whether government was sincere on paying the new wage.
He said that the call for a new minimum wage became necessary because it was already overdue, and in view of the increasing cost of goods and services.
The news conference was attended by top labour leaders from NLC, TUC and ULC. - Daily Post

beer

Lagos State Commissioner of Police (CP) Imohimi Edgal has ordered the arrest of Inspector Emmanuel Egba, who was seen with a bottle of beer.
The police boss also ordered that the incident be investigated to ascertain its veracity.
The picture of the Inspector holding a beer bottle was published by a newspaper yesterday.
Reacting yesterday, Edgal said the inspector would be held, pending investigation.
In a statement, spokesman Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), said the Inspector claimed that he recovered the bottle from a driver.
Oti said: “The attention of the Commissioner of Police has been drawn to a publication in which a police Inspector was caught on camera holding a bottle of beer.
“The officer in question has been identified and arrested. He is Inspector Emmanuel Egba, a police motorcycle rider attached to Area ‘M’ Command, Idimu and not Rapid Response Squad (RRS).
“When the Inspector was questioned by senior officers, he denied the allegation; stating that he recovered the beer bottle with liquid contents from a driver who was drinking right inside his car in traffic.
“He feared that the driver might get himself intoxicated thereby endangering his life and that of other road users.

“The case is however being investigated at the Command Provost Section and if his claim is found to be false, appropriate disciplinary action will be meted out to him after an Orderly Room Trial.” - The Nation

The strongest marijuana I ever smoked was with Fela, says Paul McCartney

For his 1973 album, Band on the Run, Sir Paul McCartney, a former member of the Beatles, choose to record in Lagos after his label, EMI, suggested the city.
When McCartney arrived in Nigeria, he came across news headlines of the firebrand, Fela Kuti, accusing him of “coming to steal the black man’s music”.
To smooth things over, McCartney invited Fela over to his studio so the Afrobeat pioneer could listen to his songs.
McCartney recounted this in a candid interview with Marc Maron for the podcast WTF, where he also spoke about other memories from his time with the Beatles and his solo career.
The British icon was among international stars – such as James Brown, Gilberto Gil and Hugh Masekela – who visited the Afrika Shrine where Fela and his band thrilled music lovers.
McCartney recalled that after he invited Fela to his studio, “he came over with his 30 wives and a studio full of ganja. He was one wild cat, he used to have a bottle of whiskey in which was marinating a pound of pot… in the whiskey. We turned out to be real good friends, he got it, he said ‘no you’re not doing that’ [stealing African music].
“Ginger Baker was there, he was his big friend. So, Fela invites us to his club which was outside Lagos, the Afrika Shrine. This was a few of us, little white people, me and a couple of friends. So we go out there and I say, ‘let’s not smoke any pot‘. Cause it’s pretty crazy, we’re out in the jungle and it’s pitch black.
“So we’re sitting there with Fela [at The Shrine] and one of Fela’s guys comes up, he’s crouching and he’s got a packet of Rothmans cigarettes. They’re all joints. He goes, ‘You want one of these?‘ I say, ‘no thanks‘, so he carries around and gets to Ginger Baker who says ‘Yeah man! Sure!’
“Then Fela shouts ‘Ginger Baker! The only man I know never refuse a smoke. So I go, ‘A-ha! Ok, I’ll have one of those’. Man. I tripped out. It was so strong. It was stronger than anything I’ve ever had, I don’t know if there was something in it. But in the end, it was a good night.” - TheCablelifestyle

NCC intervenes in CBN’s cash refund order to MTN

NCC

There is hope for a truce in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)-MTN Nigeria face-off.
Telecoms sector regulator Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is to broker peace between the two.
The CBN has ordered the mobile giant to refund $8.1billion allegedly  repatriated from the country.
Besides, the Attorney General of the Federation has demanded the payment of $2billion alleged to be unpaid taxes over a 10-year period, allegations the telco has consistently rejected.
MTN Nigeria claimed that due process was followed in the transaction concerning Certificate of Capital Importation (CCI),  insisting that it has remained a good corporate citizen by paying its taxes. It has however approached the High Court to seek restraining  injunctions against its two accusers .
Dismissing insinuation among South Africans that the Federal Government is out to appropriate MTN Nigeria’s assets,  the Executive Vice Chairman, NCC, Prof Garba Umar Dambatta, yesterday in Durban, South Africa,  assured the investment community that there was no such plan, adding that steps have been taken to reach an amicable settlement of the matter.

South African reporters had  raised fears about the development as being capable of keeping potential investors at bay.
Prof Dambatta said though the regulatory functions of the NCC have been spelt out by its enabling Act, just as that of the CBN and the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS), he said the Commission has stepped in,  adding that an amicable resolution would soon be reached.
Dambatta, however,  did not give any details. He said intervention in such disputes  was in the DNA of the Commission because of its commitment not to reverse the gains of the sector, which he said is not only adding 10.5 per cent to the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP), but also enabling other sectors of the economy.
Also speaking on the occasion,  MTN Group CEO,  Rob Shutter,  said the telco will amicably work around the logjam.
Shutter, while commending  the leadership of NCC, s aid the group was proud of the success story of its Nigeria operation, adding that MTN Zambia has followed the footsteps of the NCC to launch a campaign dedicating this year as the Year of the Consumers.
He assured the international investment community that Nigeria remains an investment destination in Africa. - The Nation

Why politicians become poor after leaving government – Amaechi

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi on Wednesday said many politicians become poor months after leaving office.

He said this while commending President Muhammadu Buhari over his insistence on prudent spending.
Amaechi in an interactive session with the media in Abuja, noted that the Buhari-led administration had achieved a lot in security, road, fight against corruption, agriculture and transportation.
He said: “In terms of corruption; this economy was a rent economy. Public money was spent anyhow and it was an economy that was not worked hard for.
“That is why you see politicians today very rich and one year after leaving government, they are poor.
“They are like that because they don’t know how to manage the money. When Buhari came, he said we could not continue to spend anyhow. Buhari has not said people should not steal.
“But when you steal, there is a consequence for stealing. I don’t want to say it has stopped completely but it has reduced. So if you say Buhari has not done anything on corruption, you are being most unfair.”
Amaechi said Nigerians will enjoy 24 hours of power supply if President Muhammadu Buhari is given a second chance.
“There is an improvement in power. We have moved from 3000megawatt to 7000 but we are distributing 5000 because some of the Infrastructures are not in good state but we are slowly fixing them.
“The expectation is that it should be 24 hours power supply but there will still be a gap but if you give us a second term, that gap will be closed.”
He added: “It is also unfair if Nigerians think the ministry of works is not working. The road to Bonny was abandoned after Obasanjo left government, the road was below N39bn but it is now N120bn that the Federal government wants to do it.
“So, Buhari government is dealing with corruption, building roads, the worst roads in Nigeria used to be between Uyo and Calabar but it has been awarded.
“The road to Enugu too that people are complaining about: contractors are working on the roads already. The work may be slow but they are working. Also the Ilorin-Jebba road has been awarded.” - Daily Post

Land of fraudsters !!! How Catholic Knight ‘swindled’ man of N92m

A Catholic Knight, Paulson Ogbonna has been arrested by the anti-fraud unit of the Federal Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID), Alagbon, Ikoyi for allegedly defrauding a young businessman of N92million.
Ogbonna, a Knight of St. John and parishioner at St. Timothy Parish in Ojudu Berger in Lagos, allegedly presented himself as a senior army officer who could assist his victim, a winer, recover about N77million owed him by his clients.
After swindling his victim identified as Francis Obinna of some millions as money for court processes with the help of a member of his syndicate he said was a lawyer; Ogbonna deceived the young man that he would give him contract to supply wines at all Army Officers’ Mess in Nigeria.
The suspect also lured the victim into a supposed importation of building materials with promises to provide links of military topnotch who will award juicy contracts to him.
According to Police Commissioner Nkem Okoro who paraded the suspect before reporters, Ogbonna used all available avenues to milk the victim of his money.

Okoro said: “The victim had supplied products to some of his clients worth N77million and it was difficult recovering the money.
“After several failed attempts over a period, a man who identified himself as a Brigadier-General in the Nigerian Army offered to assist him with the recovery and also get him registered with big companies, but ended up making various monetary demands until the victim could bear it no more.
“We had the suspect arrested and got court remand order to detain him. We are investigating the matter and have invited his wife as well as the woman who introduced him to the victim.
“His wife was invited because she’s a signatory to one of the accounts the victim paid money to and also a director of the company.
“We have also written the army and established he was an impostor. We want to be sure that it is not a syndicate and want to establish if there are financial transactions from the accounts the victim paid money into to yhe woman who linked them up. If there are, we will trace dates and investigate reasons.”
The police boss warned those engaged in fraudulent practices to desist or face prosecution.
He said: “Those who engage in fraud-related activities must watch out. Those who hack accounts, intercept letters, emails from personal and corporate domains; those who are changing account numbers and addresses should stop forthwith or be arrested. We have the wherewithal to trace and track persons who are into these criminalities.”
Narrating his ordeal, Obinna said he made payments into Best Way Construction Company, Paulson Okechukwu Ogbonna, Icarl International Ventures, Peesab Energy Resources Limited, Lazarus Maduforu, Peesab International Investment Limited and other individuals at the instance of the suspect.
Obinna said most of the payments were made through mobile transfers noting that the suspect usually objected and directed he went or sent someone to the banking hall to deposit the money.
“I knew him as a Colonel. It was Madam Chika, my client that introduced him to me. Months after I knew him, he said he has been promoted Brig-Gen. and we celebrated it. I even bought things and took to his house for the celebration. I never knew he was fake.
“When we called him, he fixed a meeting at Bonny Camp but while we were on our way to Victoria Island, he called and said he had doctor’s appointment at Ikeja and that we should meet there instead.
“We met and he told me that as an army officer, he won’t be able to help recover a loan for me. He said he was a lawyer as well and that he would introduce me to a barrister friend of his and they will work together. Then, he told me to give them a list of all those owing me, thr amount, their addresses and contacts, which I did.
“I did not suspect anything bad. In fact, I believed him especially because one of those very hostile customers, who have threatened me with a gun when I went to demand for my money started calling me to plead for time. Other debtors were also pleading for time that my lawyer came to them with officer.
“That was how I believed the man and I was just doing anything he said. From there, he started telling me how he will give me links to be supplying all the Mess in Nigeria drinks. Some people dressed in military camouflage used to come and load drinks and they will give me cheque.
“The whole thing was so real. He kept demanding money and I kept sending. I became suspicious when I started demanding for the contracts or imported goods and he was posting me. I went to Bonny Camp to look for him and I was told there was no such officer. I also started asking some friends to help me make findings and it became clear that I have been duped.
“It is just so difficult to run to people for help in Nigeria. If a 58-year-old man who is old enough to be my father can defraud me, I do not know if there is any hope for Nigeria. He has children. He has a wife; he has a community, and he is a Knight in the Catholic Church. Still he defrauds people, even his parishioners. I am neck deep into debt. He has crippled my business and ruined my life.”
But Ogbonna denied defrauding the victim claiming that he only tried to assist him with his business, register him as a contractor and help him obtain a license.
He denied ever representing himself as an army officer, adding that he was a Civil Servant at the Ministry of Defence, Moloney Street and was in the Department of Estate Management as a Senior Technical Officer. - The Nation

Shithole country !!! Nigerian govt. has abandoned us – Northeast IDPs

The chairman, Bauchi State Internally Displaced Persons, Buba Musa Shehu, has slammed the federal government for stopping all interventions to Northeast IDPs.

Shehu also cried out that some landlords have since sent most IDPs out of their rented apartments over outstanding rents.

He exclusively told DAILY POST in an interview on Wednesday in Bauchi.
He regretted that it’s over one year since the FG, states and LGs made any move to provide any palliative measure to bring succour to victims of insurgents in the Northeast.
” Its over one year that IDPs in Bauchi State stopped receiving relief materials from any tier of government despite repeated promise.”
According to the chairman, lack of adequate medical provision has sent many IDPs to their early grave, leaving relatives in the wave of shock.
He lamented that some IDPs are currently exposed to the rainy season with their respective families after being sent out by their landlords.
” This is the terrible story of IDPs in Northeast now. The government seems not to be willing to assist them any more. This is a result of corruption and impunity,” Shehu fumed.
Shehu noted that poverty and hunger was now the order of the day among IDPs while the FG is watching with keen interest without a solution.
He urged IDPs irrespective of their destination to vote credible candidate of their choice ahead of 2019 election - Daily Post

I couldn’t mourn my father until 10 years after his execution, says Zina Saro-Wiwa

I couldn’t mourn my father until 10 years after his execution, says Zina Saro-Wiwa
Zina Saro-Wiwa says she was unable to mourn her father, Ken Saro-Wiwa, a playwright and Ogoni activist, until 10 years after his execution.

The New York-based artist disclosed this in an interview with Frieze, a UK magazine.
Saro-Wiwa was hanged in 1995 for his alleged involvement in the murder of four Ogoni chiefs under the regime of Sani Abachi, late military dictator.
According to Zina, her father’s death came as a rude shock, forcing her to cut off all ties with anything that reminded her of him.
The former journalist said her decision to produce a documentary about her father’s legacy sent her on a journey of recovery, which helped her to come to terms with his death.

“I didn’t move into art consciously. It proved to be the only strategy that allowed me to deal with what had happened to me and my family and Nigeria,” she told the magazine.
“For 10 years after my father’s execution, I hadn’t really mourned him and chose to cut myself off from anything that surrounded his legacy, as there seemed to be no real space for me within it. He became an international symbol, rather than my father.

“When I was ready to deal with it I thought that making a documentary about him would be the way for me to reclaim some of his memory and to forge a connection with Nigeria.
“But every time I went to a pitching meeting at a production company I would break down sobbing. I eventually made a video that dealt directly with my inability to mourn my father’s death: Sarogua Morning (2011).

“It was a video performance where I shaved my head and forced myself to cry and mourn in front of the camera. That was the film I needed to make. Not a documentary. This work gave me agency, resilience. It made me research mourning cultures around the world and in Ogoniland.
“It made me think about the relationship between performance and catharsis; it commented on the gap between the public and private sphere when it came to mourning his death. It was also painful and very hard work.

“But I could reframe history and emotion and connect them any way I wanted to through this device. Art was and is a gift.” - TheCable

Fayose’s letter to EFCC is a decoy, says Fayemi’s spokesman

Fayose’s letter to EFCC is a decoy, says Fayemi’s spokesman
Wole Olujobi, spokesman of Ekiti governor-elect Kayode Fayemi, says Ayodele Fayose, outgoing governor of the state, is not sincere about his letter to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a letter addressed to Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of the EFCC, Fayose said he would make himself available for questioning after handing over to Fayemi.
TheCable had reported that the EFCC is investigating Fayose and Feyisetan, his wife, on allegations of money laundering.
Reacting to the governor’s letter which is dated September 10, Olujobi said it is a decoy “to pull a surprise”.

The spokesman said Ekiti people are wise and would not be deceived by Fayose’s “ostrich game”.
“If you know Fayose very well, when Fayose greets you good morning, you can be sure that it is evening, maybe 7pm,” Fayemi’s spokesman said.
“When he makes any declarative statement, that people would have thought he means business, I am telling you it is another ploy by him to do otherwise.

“When he wanted to escape in 2016, he went round the whole capital city of Ado Ekiti, asking his supporters to meet him at Fajuyi area of the town for a rally, his supporters mobilized themselves to Fajuyi expecting Fayose. The next thing they heard was that Fayose had escaped inside the boot of his car.

“He hid inside the boot and escaped from Ado-Ekiti while his supporters that he called for a rally at Fajuyi area were anxiously waiting for him.
“So, we don’t believe he is sincere about the letter he wrote to the EFCC, its another kind of decoy to pull a surprise, a surprise that is fake.” - TheCable

I will jump into river if court fails to separate us – House wife cries out

A 28- year-old housewife and mother of one, Mautin Idowu, on Wednesday asked a Badagry Customary Court in Lagos State to dissolve her five-year-old marriage to her husband, Michael, to prevent her from committing suicide.

The petitioner threatened to jump into a river in the coastal city if the court declined to grant her request due to the alleged wayward behaviour of her husband.
According to NAN, Mautin, a teacher in a public school, said she was tired of her husband’s disrespect for her family, his intolerable behaviour and lack of love.
She said, “I was in 300-level at the Lagos State University Distance Learning Programme when I met Michael Idowu in 2012.
“He was a teacher and I was teaching with my National Certificate in Education (NCE) then; he proposed to me but I rejected because he was older than me.
“Michael told me that his wife divorced him with two sons and out of pity, I fell in love with him.
“Few months after, he took me to meet his family. When I got pregnant in 2013, we got married and he paid my dowry.
“But when I was seven months pregnant, I discovered that my husband had two wives and six children which he hid from me during our courtship.
“He lied to me, my world broke down but I survived the trauma.
“Michael kept me in a two-room apartment in a bushy area, but I still managed to have my baby, ” the petitioner said.
The respondent was, however, not in court.
The court’s President, Mr Sakirudeen Adekola, adjourned the case till October 18 to give room for an amicable settlement between the couple. - Daily Post
