Four pregnant women rescued as police uncover ‘baby factory’ in Anambra

The Anambra police command says it has rescued four pregnant women from a baby factory in Nnewi area of the state.

Haruna Mohammed, spokesperson of the Anambra police command, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, adding that the area was discovered after an attempted child theft that occurred recently.

Haruna said the command had received a report from Nnewi that a four-year-old pupil was almost abducted on his way from school on March 11.

He said the two suspected kidnappers were beaten up by a crowd, which led to the death of one of them.

According to Mohammed, the suspects are involved with one Gladys Ikegwuonu, who allegedly runs a brothel where the “stolen girls” are kept, impregnated and their children sold to buyers.

“It will be recalled that on 11/3/2021, there was a report at the Area Command Headquarters, Nnewi, that a four-year-old child of St Joseph’s School, Otolo Nnewi, was returning home from school in the company of his siblings, when two men on a motorcycle grabbed the child and zoomed off with him,” the statement reads.

“However, the child was rescued by some commercial motorcyclists who pursued and eventually arrested the suspects at Akamili Community, Nnewi.

“Preliminary investigations conducted by the Police revealed that the suspects, who were beaten to stupor by an angry mob (one of whom was confirmed dead), were sent by one Gladys Nworie Ikegwuonu, presently at large, who also operates a baby factory and a brothel by keeping young girls and getting them impregnated, after which she sells the children to her waiting customers.

“Two suspects arrested are Abuchi Ani, ‘M’, aged 32 years, of Ohazora, Ebonyi State, and Emeka Ikegwuonu, ‘M’, 49 years, of Akabukwu, Nnewi, Anambra State.”

The four rescued women, aged between 18 and 21, are said to be from Ebonyi state.

The spokesman also noted that the command is intensifying efforts to ensure that the main suspect and other accomplices are apprehended.

Cristiano Ronaldo takes decision on Real Madrid return

Juventus forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, is determined to resign from Real Madrid this summer and has instructed his agents to open talks with the LaLiga club.

The 36-year-old left the Santiago Bernabeu in 2018 to join Juventus in a £100m deal.

Juve brought in Ronaldo, in a bid to end their wait for a fourth Champions League trophy, but the Serie A club has been knocked out before the semi-finals in each of the Portuguese’s three seasons at the club.

Last week’s defeat to Porto in the Champions League, has left Ronaldo considering his future in Turin and although the club insists he’s part of their plans, the forward only has a year to run on his deal.

While Ronaldo will not fight publicly for a move to Real, Zinedine Zidane fueled talks of a return earlier this week by admitting the speculation is true.

When asked if there’s any truth in the reports about Ronaldo, Zidane said: “Yes, there may be.

“We know Cristiano, we know the person he is and everything he has done here.

“But now he’s a Juventus player and we must respect this.

“Now, let’s see what the future will be. I was lucky enough to coach him and he is very impressive. Right now, he’s helping Juventus.”

NAFDAC: Minimal risks of AstraZeneca vaccine better than dying of COVID-19

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says contending with the minimal side effects of AstraZeneca vaccine is better than dying of COVID-19 complications.

Mojisola Adeyeye, NAFDAC director-general, said this in an interview with Channels Television on Wednesday.

“It is logical to think that way but when you come to think of the many hundred of thousands that are dying, especially in Europe, of COVID disease, then you start wondering, is it better to die than take a risk of 0.00002%?

“I don’t blame [countries halting the administration of Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine] but, at the same time, we have to look at the risk of getting COVID-19 disease versus the risk of getting a side effect of the adverse effects.”

The Cable had reported the suspension of the AstraZeneca vaccine by several European countries amid the reports of blood clot by some recipients.

The development created fear and aided the anti-vaccine sentiment being spread around.

Adeyeye said these countries are pausing vaccination for only a limited period.

“Some of those countries that have halted it, they are halting it very temporarily,” she said.

The NAFDAC DG reiterated the position of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) that evidence has shown the vaccine may not be the cause of blood clot in some recipients.

”The blood clot has not been tied to the vaccine. They are still studying it because you have what is called causality: what is causing this? There is so much to learn about the disease, about the vaccine,” she said.
