FRSC : 128 people died in road accidents in Sept

A total of 128 persons died, while 2, 254 others were injured in 673 road crashes across the country in September, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
FRSC disclosed this in its monthly Road Traffic Crash (RTC) Report signed by the Corps Marshal, Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Abuja.
The September figures indicated a general reduction in all parameters with 31 per cent and 17 per cent reduction in crashes and fatality cases respectively as compared to those of August.
The report said the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had the highest number of crashes and fatality cases in September with recorded 81 crashes and 22 fatalities.
“Kaduna, Niger, Ogun, Yobe and Oyo followed in order of magnitude,’’ the report stated.
Analysis based on crash-prone routes revealed that Kaduna-Abuja road recorded the highest number of crashes in the month under review.
“Lagos-Ibadan road followed with 48 cases and Abuja-Lokoja road recorded 37 cases,’’ the report said.
It also revealed that speed violation accounted for 359 cases or 51 per cent of the total road accidents in the month under review.
“Out of the total of 1,099 vehicles involved in road crashes in September, cars accounted for 366 representing 33 per cent.
“Mini buses followed with 224 representing 20 per cent while motorcycle with 209 represented 11 per cent,’’ it stated.
It said further that the number of crashes in September when compared with that of the corresponding month in 2017 showed two per cent reduction in fatality.
The report also showed 11 per cent increase in crashes and 15 per cent increase in the number of persons injured.
It however noted that road crash injuries could be prevented through a holistic involvement and synergy from multiple sectors such as transport and police, among others.
The report urged the Federal Government to take steps to ensure that the National Assembly provided an effective legislation capable of ensuring safety on roads.
“This is as our existing traffic laws do not reflect contemporary safety needs of the public,’’ the report said.

IBRAHIM WA JE SHEGE IYA !! Babangida reveals why he annuled June 12, 1993 presidential election

A former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, has revealed what former President, Olusegun Obasanjo told him about the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

Babangida, in an interview with The Crest, also said nobody gave him credit for the election.

The former Miltary leader spoke of the intricacies surrounding the election, and the details of what led to the annulment.
President Muhammadu Buhari had on June 12, 2018, tendered a national apology to the family of Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, presumed winner of the election, for the annulment of the election by Babangida
When asked why he failed to take the opportunity to support the 1993 democratic process, Babangida said, “Everybody said so. I agree. Even my boss, OBJ, told me that. He said you had an opportunity and if that had gone through properly, history would have recorded it as your greatest achievement.
“But then, we discussed at length what could have transpired. Again this: I will always talk about the Nigerian mentality. I think we are always anxious. We are always in a hurry.
“We want things to get done in the fastest time possible. I tried to go out and talk to the public on why we had to do this but we were overwhelmed with criticisms. Nobody wanted to listen.”
He continued, “I think people who said that have not been fair to me because when we started the transition programme, I was in the media; I said we will be doing it step by step, by learning. Wherever we met a hiccup, we will stop, change it and move again.
“On this, I was honest with Nigerians. I told them that, and they would have judged me with what I said on that particular issue. But everybody wanted the military to just leave. But I did say it, that in the process of implementation, we may have a hiccup or mistake. And if we do, we would pause, correct it and then move on.
“Even the transition after the June 12, we gave a time span which again nobody was patient with. But we studied, we compared to either have a non-conventional election or a general election.
“And everybody said they wanted to see the country carry out a general election. And you can’t just have a general election within seven days. You have to plan for it.
“Again, if people allowed us, we said there would be a general election in this country. I think Abacha came in November. Nobody wanted to listen. Everybody was tired. I appreciate that. I appreciate it.
“Yes, people were bored and we envisaged it and we said it. We warned you in advance that if this happens, this is our next step. And that led us to the famous June 12.”
On whether he was threatened at the time by General Sani Abacha on being head of state, he responded,
“No, he couldn’t have threatened me, to be fair to him. But I knew he wanted that job at all cost. You will be reading it…”
Speaking further on why he decided on the annulment, Babangida continued, “I have a conviction that if I get involved in building this environment, I wouldn’t like to be seen as having the environment destroyed.
“That’s number one. I wouldn’t be part of the destruction. So, I either make sure I remain with it, and belong there, or a circumstance will come and, eventually, I will leave. When I leave, if it gets destroyed, nobody will blame me.
“I wouldn’t declare the result if (Professor Humphrey) Nwosu declared the result. I knew deep into this that there were consequences which will not be fair to this country. I give an example: I took part in the management of PDP and I can’t disown them because I’m part of them.
“I made an input into its emergence, and if you say it is the worst thing that could ever happen to the country, I cannot in all conscience sit down and say it is because I participated in it. If the transition failed, and I knew it would have fallen down, nobody would have been bothered. They will say no. I will feel guilty like after all I spent the money but it collapsed. My conscience will never forgive me.
“It was not a threat to my life but if it was a threat to my life, I have no problem. After all I have a bullet in me; there couldn’t have been any greater threat than that. But my fear was: what would the country end up becoming. Could the country be better?
“This was what we sought to establish. Could it better? If the answer is no, then, I take the blame because I should have put in place certain measures that will make it good. What we wanted was an enduring legacy.
“I wouldn’t say the evil was in the person who won the election, after all he campaigned for it, people saw in him what he stood for, and therefore decided to vote for him. It was the finest hour in Nigerian political history where people voted anyhow; not ethnically, religiously and so on. That was the finest moment in our political history.
“He (Abiola) was on the verge of winning that election. From what I saw, he was on the verge of winning that election, because by the time it was assumed that he won, officially, the official thing was not done. Results were still coming in, and it wasn’t declared. So, I think I would be deceiving myself if I say he has won.
“The credit of not getting it right? You wouldn’t give me; so, I accepted that I will not be given that credit no matter what I say.”

Nigeria recycling leaders telling the same stories – Anglican bishop, Akinfenwa speaks on 2019 elections

The Bishop of Ibadan Diocese, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Reverend Joseph Akinfenwa on Sunday expressed disappointment that Nigeria was still recycling leaders who are telling same stories to the electorate during elections after many years of independence.

Bishop Akinfenwa, who described the current situation in the land as many people suffering in the midst of plenty, said the present situation in Nigeria was not only ridiculous but equally disappointing.
He then urged Nigerians to pray for a messiah in the 2019 general elections.
Akinfenwa, who spoke to journalists after the international ordination service and licensing of Lay Readers at the All Souls’ Church Bodija Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, said, “Nigerians are disappointed. I am disappointed. This nation is recycling leaders. Those who are in particular group metamorphosed into another group and are telling us the same stories.”
He added what the people need at this time was to pray to God for a successful general elections.
He said, “All we need as Nigerians is to pray to God to give us security in the land and in 2019 elections and to make His judgement to bear because all the money they are using now to campaign, is it not our stolen money that they are using to bribe people to vote for them? We need to pray to God to bring down judgment.
“It is an injustice and a daylight robbery. And all we have to do is to pray for a messiah. We need a revolution. God should revolutionise this land. We are tired of the same people doing same thing all the time. God should send us a messiah that will safe us as a nation. It doesn’t matter the personality or a particular political party,” Akinfenwa added.
Speaking to the newly ordained ministers of God, the Bishop charged them to abide by the oath to serve God faithfully and diligently.
He reminded them that it wasn’t possible to make money in Anglican church, adding that “they are to go out and preach the gospel to the world. They must be obedient; make sacrifice, spend their personal money and be prepared to serve anywhere even in the rural areas where their services are most needed.
“If possible, they should be ready to die in the cause of service to the Lord because Jesus Christ promised us eternity. One of the hymns rendered earlier talked about dying for God’s sake and make heaven. They must preach holiness at all times. In doing that many souls will be won for the kingdom of God. They must also lead by example so that the congregation can follow,” Akinfenwa stressed.
The Bishop had earlier told the congregation that the new ministers, majority of who are Nigerians with three from the Chad mission, said they had been found to be living a godly life and were of sound learning.
Among the new ministers ordained were: Adebobola Adeleye; Ademola Adeniyi; Olakunle Kiyesi; Abiodun Lasebikan; Albert Olaniyi; Chianu Osadebe, Djepeule Mbaiondoun; Maba Nadjibeye, Nonyerem Udumaga; Olufemi Ogundimu, Kolapo Olayiwola and Ibukun Olarinmoye.

He said true leadership must showcase the people.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, Symington made the remarks at the African Business Conference Plus 2018 with the theme: “Human Capital: The key to Africa’s Transformation” in Lagos.
The conference was organised by the American Business Council (ABC) in partnership with the Lagos Business School (LBS).
Symington, in a statement by Mrs Margaret Olele, the Director-General, American Business Council (ABC), said that citizens were greatest resources of Nigeria, adding that without them, there would be no leader.
“I am here to let you know the greatest resource of this nation. As an ambassador, I have seen first hand the diversity of the nation as well as its potential.
“The most successful people you will remember think in terms of people.
“Their value for people is what makes them stand out, that is why I strongly believe that the greatest resource for this nation is you,” he said.
The ambassador said that the time was apt to scale up partnerships between U.S companies and credible institutions like LBS, in order to improve vocational studies and requisite talents in areas that would enhance Africa’s growth.
Similarly, Dr Lazarus Angbazo, the President, American Business Council, said that U.S companies operating in Nigeria were keen on training.
He said that they spent over N1.6 billion on training and development in 2017 from N340 million they spent in 2016.
Angbazo, who is the Chief Executive Officer of General Electric (GE) in Nigeria, said that a recent talent survey carried out by the company showed a clear deficit in the area of Engineering profession.
According to him, the study showed that about 4,600 talents were available in the Nigerian market for profession that needed over 14,000 talents.
He said that GE and U.S companies focussed on three key areas to drive innovation that would enhance human capital- education, localisation and digitalisation.
“Innovation is indispensable for solving Africa’s challenges. Greater technical training is required for scalable and efficient solutions for the next generation,” Angbazo said.
He called for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)-focussed education that would unlock the growth of infrastructure in Nigeria and indeed Africa.
Also, Mr Oscar Onyema, the Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Stock Exchange, said that human capital defines the rate of economic growth of a country via productivity and employment levels.

Nigeria’s infrastructure deficit to hit $878bn by 2040 – SEC

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Sunday said that the country’s infrastructure deficit would hit 878 billion dollars by 2040 and called for active utilisation of green bond for infrastructural gap.
Ms Mary Uduk, SEC Acting Director-General, said this at the 2018 annual workshop organised by the Capital Market Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CAMCAN) in Lagos.
She said that Nigeria should tap into green bond opportunities, adding that the commission would continue to promote an active enabling and regulative environment for its issuance.
“The future holds opportunities for renewable energy, energy efficiency, infrastructure, food, agriculture and the task ahead is to ensure funds are channeled to green projects with multiple socio-merits,” Uduk said.
She said there must be more domestic participation in green bonds investment for Nigeria to claw its way out of deficit in infrastructure, power and energy, transportation and eliminating environmental degradation.
Uduk, who was represented by Head, Registration and Market Infrastructure Department, SEC, Mr Emomotimi Agama, said that it was necessary for Nigeria to stand at the fore-front of innovations and initiatives.
She said that the second tranche of green bonds which had been issued, presented an opportunity for the country to solve its infrastructural deficit.
“The biggest opportunity, to my mind, which green bond issuance will present, is the potential to solve Nigeria’s infrastructural deficits, improve agriculture and alleviate poverty while also protecting the environment. – a multi-faceted strategy,” she said.
Also speaking, Mr Bola Onadele, the Managing Director, FMDQ OTC Securities Exchange, said that 155 billion dollars had been realised from the green bonds issuance, thereby gaining attention of investors.
Onadele who was represented by Mr Emmanuel Etaderhi, Senior Vice President, Economic development division at the Exchange, said that
the country’s resources was not growing in tandem with the rising population.
He said that the reason for Nigeria’s woeful performance in the power and energy sector was due to its inability to tap into energy utilisation from the sun like other European countries.
According to him, the challenges affecting green bonds include low level of local participation in green bond verifiers, lack of investible projects, cost of verification and lack of understanding on the part of key investors.
“Green bond investors enjoy waivers relating to tax and in the next 15 years, we will require $7 trillion in investments connecting sustainable finance to capital markets,” he said.
He noted that the FMDQ had set a sustainable finance committee to engage private and public and will engage in training partnership with FSD Africa and Climate Bond Initiative (CBI).
Commenting further, Director, Climate Finance Advisor, CBI, Dr Jubril Adeojo, said that green bonds was made for Africa and with the deficits seen in major sectors of the economy.
Adeojo stated that green bond opportunities were enormous, noting that the nation would focus more on renewable energy, hybrids to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workshop was themed: Exploring Green Bond market for economic growth.

Bale scores as Real Madrid beat Huesca 1-0

Wales forward Gareth Bale scored the winner as Real Madrid moved back into La Liga’s top four with a hard-fought victory at bottom side Huesca.
Bale ended a run of 10 matches without a goal in Spain’s top flight with a sumptuous side-footed volley.
Huesca should have equalised after the break, but Gonzalo Melero headed wide from close range.
Bale saw a chipped effort diverted just wide, while Juan Camilo Hernandez fired over for Huesca as Real hung on.
BBC reports that Thibaut Courtois tipped a Moi Gomez free-kick over the bar in injury time, and Dani Carvajal headed a Christian Rivera effort off the line from the resulting corner.
Huesca, who are in their first season in La Liga, matched Real’s four efforts on target, and for long periods outplayed their more illustrious opponents.
Indeed, the visitors only managed two shots on target in the second half – their lowest return in all competitions this season – and Karim Benzema failed to register a single effort for the first time this campaign.
However, after Melero’s glaring miss, Huesca failed to create another chance of similar quality, and also found Courtois in good form. The Belgian had made a series of important interventions before his 92nd-minute stop to deny Gomez, most notably an acrobatic save from David Ferreiro’s 57th-minute drive, to keep a third clean sheet in a row.
Victory for Santiago Solari’s side leaves them five points behind leaders Barcelona, who thrashed city rivals Espanyol 4-0 on Saturday.
They next play on Wednesday, at home to CSKA Moscow in the Champions League, having already secured a place in the knockout round.
