Identify soldiers behind shooting of unarmed protesters in Lekki, Chevening Alumni tells FG

The Chevening Alumni Association of Nigeria (CAAN) has asked the federal government to identify and prosecute the soldiers involved in the shooting of #EndSARS protesters at Lekki toll gate in Lagos.

On Tuesday, armed men in military uniform opened fire on protesters who had assembled at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos.

The incident has sparked condemnation within and outside Nigeria, with calls for an investigation into the incident.

Kester Osahenye, CAAN’s president, in a statement issued on Thursday, described the action as “inhumane, insensitive and reprehensible”.

“We thought as compatriots, the dark days of deploying brute military force is over. It is inhumane, insensitive and reprehensible in a democracy to deploy military men to shoot unarmed protesters,” Osahenye was quoted as saying.

The association called on President Muhammadu Buhari to, as a matter of national urgency, “identify the soldiers behind the shooting of the unarmed protesters, enforce their arrests and prosecution, and also arrest and prosecute the hoodlums who also stabbed #EndSARS protesters in Abuja”.

The alumni association also frowned at the “perceived conflicting statements” from Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, who had initially claimed that there were no fatalities, and that the soldiers were sent by “forces beyond our direct control”.

CAAN called on Sanwo-Olu to publish the names of all the victims, dead or injured from the Tuesday shooting.

It also urged the federal government to, as a matter of urgency, implement without further delay, the “5For5 requests of the #ENDSARS protesters; compensate every family that lost loved ones, and immortalise the names of everyone killed during this protests”.

The association also commended the #EndSARS protesters for “opening  a new vista in the history of advocacy and activism in Nigeria”, and called on the youths to obey the curfew imposed by different states.

‘No nation can defeat its people’ — Jonathan condemns attack on protesters

Former president Goodluck Jonathan has condemned the “use of deadly force” on #EndSARS protesters in Lagos state.

In a statement on Thursday, Jonathan said such actions will only worsen the situation, calling on all parties to embrace dialogue.

Nationwide protests against the now-dissolved police special anti-robbery squad (SARS) metamorphosed into agitation for improved governance in addition to justice for victims of police brutality.

On Tuesday, soldiers shot at the young protesters while they converged on the Lekki tollgate.

Twelve people died in the shooting and in a related development in Ikeja, according to Amnesty International.

In the statement shared with TheCable, the former president said the event of recent days “has been a difficult time to me as well”.

He said the task of building a nation must involve both the old and the young, adding that Nigeria “cannot afford to lose the lives of our youth who we look up to take over leadership and continue our nation’s journey to greatness”.

“As leaders, we must understand that a nation can never win a battle against its own people,” he said.

“Thus, the use of deadly force against citizens only aggravates tense situations rather than assuage it. We must therefore move away from battlegrounds to middle grounds in our individual and national life. This, I believe, epitomises the essence of democracy.

“I condemn any unnecessary loss of life and urge efforts to be stepped up to ensure that there is no such reoccurrence.

“We all must accept that we are all brothers and sisters of one Nigeria, and always act towards each other accordingly.”

Jonathan, who added that “nobody’s interest is worth the blood of any Nigerian citizen,” asked security agencies to ensure maximum restraint is applied in carrying out their constitutional responsibilities of protecting lives and property.

He also asked young Nigerians to “give peace a chance especially now that different stakeholders have demonstrated the willingness to investigate the various allegations of excessive use of force on citizens and address the culture of impunity by security personnel”.

“Never had a more ‘wasted 12mins’ all my life…insensitive and useless speech..who gave the orders for people to be killed?.what’s the repercussions of such blatant impunity?

“Nobody was fired for lives wasted? No compensation for victims family?..I wish I can “unwatch” it,” he tweeted.

I will soon give youths palliatives, we are in Shoprite buying them..police, ‘una’ well done.. Oba of Lagos, ’ema binu’ sir…youths, don’t go out again o, ask of me, I don’t have joy.”

On those rooting for ethnic bigotry, Suleman said such people should be ignored.

“Those rooting for ethnic bigotry with nepotistic, tribalistic and separatists tendencies should be ignored by us the way Jack ignored Adamu.. A cry for good governance is not about religion..both Christians and Muslims prayed at Lekki. Let’s all keep praying, that’s the way out now,” he said.

LAZY SOLDIERS !! ‘Seven soldiers killed’ as troops get tricked by Boko Haram

At least seven soldiers were killed by Boko Haram insurgents in Doska, Borno state, military sources have told TheCable.

The troops were said to be on a patrol to the area when they got tricked by the insurgents who appeared in military uniforms and gun trucks.

Doska, a village in between Ajigin and Talala in Damboa local government area of the state, became deserted since 2015 when the insurgents took control of the area which today remains one of their strongholds.

“The troops were on a fighting patrol, and when they got to Doska, they saw these people in military uniforms and military machines, and they even waved so our troops thought they were soldiers from another formation,” a source said.

“The troops stopped, exchanged greetings with these people. And as they proceeded, they ran into an ambush. Immediately, the insurgents closed in on them, opening fire.

“We lost seven soldiers, and 14 were critically injured.”

Another source said the insurgents in the area are known to always ambush soldiers with the aim of stealing gun trucks and other weapons from the army.

Since 2015, the source said, the army has been trying to dislodge the insurgents in the area but to no avail.

“It has been their stronghold for years, and we have not been able to flush them out,” the source said.

“In fact, they have planted improvised explosive devices (IEDs) all round the area and only the insurgents know and use the safe path in and out of the area. So, many times our troops run into these mines.”

Sagir Musa, spokesperson of the Nigerian army, was not immediately available for comment over the development.

For a decade now, the military has continued to combat the insurgents who have killed thousands and displaced millions in the north-east.
