Former ministers Babatunde Fashola, Rotimi Amaechi, Ogbonnaya Onu, Chris Ngige, Lai Mohammed, Geoffrey Onyema, Hadi Sirika, Abubakar Malami, are on the list of ministerial nominees sent by President Muhammadu Buhari to the Senate for confirmation.

The list of nominees was read by Senate President, Ahmed Lawan today.

There are 43 nominees in all, with former Osun Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, former Benue Governor George Akume and former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva and former minority leader Senator Godswill Akpabio, making the list.

Former governor of Ekiti, Adeniyi Adebayo and senior lawyer and spokesman of the Buhari campaign, Festus Keyamo are also on the list.

With Buhari submitting the list this week, it means the Senate would have to postpone its scheduled two-month break.

The senate was scheduled to begin a two month recess on 26 July.

In line with the calendar, the National Assembly is to go on its annual recess on July 26 and resume on September 26.

Chairman, Senate ad hoc Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Adedayo Adeyeye, said the red chamber would proceed on its annual two-month recess if the Senate did not get the ministerial list by Friday.

He said: “If the list does not come before Friday, the Senate will proceed on its annual recess.”

Man in court for raping an eight-year-old girl

A Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday ordered that a 51-year-old electrician, Kasimu Abdul, who allegedly defiled an eight-year-girl, be remanded in prison, pending legal advice.

Magistrate Hajara Dauda, who did not take the plea of Abdul, ordered the police to send back the case file to the office of the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

“Because of the sensitivity of the case, it is difficult to grant bail. The case file should be duplicated and sent to the Office of the DPP for advice,” she said.

Dauda then adjourned the case until Aug. 7, for mention.

The Police prosecutor, Insp. Sunday Baba, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on June 3, at Layin Pompo Kaduna State, NAN reports.

Baba alleged that on the same date at about midnight, Abdul lured the eight-year-old into his room while on an errand by her mother.

He said the offence violated the provisions of Section 709 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State, 2017.

Jakande at 90: Serving Lagos was best gift God gave me

Elder Statesman and first Civilian Governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande who will clock 90 years on Tuesday has said the best gift he got from God was the opportunity to serve Lagos.

Jakande was the governor of Lagos State between 1979 and 1983. He won a second term in 1983 but it was truncated through a coup by the present Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari.

Jakande, who spoke with newsmen on Monday at his Ilupeju home said he thanked God for sparing his life to reach the age of 90.

According to him, God made it possible for him to serve Lagos and that serving Lagos had always been his priority.

“I thank God for giving me the opportunity to serve Lagos. No better gift will one have than the opportunity to serve my people. I thank God for that,” he said.

Jakande advised young politicians to make up their mind to serve, saying that they have to be educated to get ready to serve.

He said successive civilian governments that came after him really served Lagos and kept the vision he had for the state.

According to him, his success in Lagos State was because of the programmes he introduced which had the acceptance of Lagosians.

Jakande added that the development of Lagos State in recent time had been very commendable, saying that “those who came after me have done very well.”

He said the government of Sanwo-Olu had started on a good note and that he believed it would further sustain the tempo in the development of Lagos that he and other governments had started.
