‘Controversial pastors’ on the rise in Nigeria amid economic hardship

As the activities of self-proclaimed men of God and prophets remain on the rise in Nigeria, some concerned Nigerians are worried about the true status of these acclaimed ‘men of God’. While adherents and supporters of some of the pastors believe they are as real as ‘God Himself,” others have kicked, saying they are fake and only after fame and money.

Nigeria, known for proliferation of churches tolerates all kinds of religious practices with little or no regulation in place.

Many Nigerian pastors have been accused of deviating from their true calling, and are focusing more on enlarging their personal ministry, influence and wealth with no regard to public criticisms.

The allegation had led to the ‘tithing’ controversy by some Nigerians and On-Air Personality, OAP Ifedayo Olarinde a.k.a, Daddy Freeze which stirred diverse reactions amongst Christians.

Freeze, a staunch critic of payment of tithe and offerings in the Church had challenged popular pastor and General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Enoch Adeboye to a debate on the issue.

He maintained that “Tithe is a false doctrine for Christianity and Christ never collected tithes, neither did his disciples.

The issue of Tithing was also criticised by an acclaimed Anambra prophet, Odumeje who said God does not need tithe.

According to him, asking church members to pay tithe is ‘criminal.’

But tithing is only an aspect of many questionable things that go on in churches unchecked.

Recently, some pastors have emerged, focusing their activities on controversies such as spraying of money on their followers, allegedly raising of dead people, and performing many miracles, the type not seen even in the Old Testament.

The activities of these pastors have raised serious questions as to the true meaning of the Gospel.

Chukwuemeka Odumeje, popularly known as Indaboski or ‘liquid metal’ is known for the display of wealth and equally fond of performing miracles, dancing and attending events where he sprays money on his followers. The Prophet has also released a song with Flavour and engaged in all kinds of secular practices.

There have been rumors that the source of power of the controversial prophet is from India. DAILY POST cannot verify this claim. But the acclaimed prophet had challenged anyone with proofs to come forward, claiming that he got his power from God.

In the case of Onyeze, the prophet had described himself as “The only one that can give you the wealth, health and other things you want,” and like an advertised business, he said “Just contact me today”.

Recently, Onyeze stirred reactions after he appeared in a viral video throwing a lot of Nigerian currency into the river and compelling his adult followers, both male and female, to bathe naked in a river.

He also planned to perform a ritual to raise seven corpses back to life which got the attention of the Anambra government and the Nigeria police.

The government warned against his planned ritual and directed hospitals and mortuaries not to let him into their facilities.

The prophet who was arrested days ago also received backlash from Nigerians who queried his acts and accused him of disguising as a man of God.

Many Nigerians say these prophets are fake and just using Christianity to cover up their diabolical acts.

Many have claimed that the South East, and particularly Anambra State is gradually becoming a breeding ground for fake pastors.

Recall that Reverend King who was sentenced to death in 2017 was from Anambra. He was found guilty of killing a church member, Ann Uzoh.

Also, of great concern by many Nigerians is the rising failed prophecies by many of these pastors. Analysts believe that what Nigerians see as prophecies are mere projections on what may likely happen and that’s why they get disappointed when majority of those prophecies fail. An analyst who spoke to DAILY POST but pleaded not to be mentioned advised followers of these pastors not see these projections as prophecies as 90 percent of them will fail at the end.

According to him, ”Truth is that these prophecies are mere projections and no right-thinking follower should be bothered about them. Just worship your God and stop looking at your pastors’ prophecies.”

Recall that it’s now traditional for many pastors to release their end of the year prophecies which reveal what Nigerians should expect in the coming year. Many of these prophecies have been criticized by some Nigerians and the government. The presidency had tagged all the prophecies on President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President, Yemi Osibanjo as ‘fake.’

Charlyboy, AKA AreaFada and Falz, have been at the fore-front of the campaign against fake pastors in Nigeria. They had recently released a song titled ” God of Men,” where they exposed the antics of pastors and fake prophets.

Nigeria as a country has the richest pastors in the world, yet its citizens are the poorest globally. The country’s economy is at a struggling pace.

But some Nigerians who spoke to our reporters had these to say about tithing and fake pastors.

Azendeh Obi said, There are many fake prophets and pastor’s in Nigeria professing ‘nonsense’ and claiming that God sent them. As believers, we ought to be careful and mindful of people disguising to know the Bible. We were warned about some many things happening now.”

Emelda Uchenna, “I know there are real men of God in this country, but honestly the fake ones are gaining grounds and spreading lies, very soon, God will expose them, all the Yahoo Yahoo Pastors and fake Prophets milking Nigerians in the name of tithes and offering in the church will be exposed.

Elder Chidi said, “During the ASF pandemic, a lot of my friends and colleagues lost their farms to the flu. Farms around me too. Almost every farm I know in Umuahia. But God kept mine. We kept increasing as people folded. I am not saying I am better, but God loves me and I pay my tithe also. If you don’t believe in tithing, no wahala. Pease allow those of us that believe and pay to pay in peace. The essence of tithe is the belief in the faithfulness of God to honor his word and not in your pastor whether ‘him chop am or not’. My name is Elder Chidi and I pay my TITHE.”

Ella said, “Tithing is the biggest fraud against Christ teaching. It was meant for a particular lineage in the Old Testament era. Christ came and abolished it. If you believe tithing is right, then Sharia law is right. They were made at the same time.”

Similarly Hanson Omah said “Being a practicing Christian changed my life immensely. I now worry less, I don’t stress to make a living. Feeding three times daily is no longer a goal. I moved from being a chronic receiver to a lavish giver. My tithing moved to an incredible level, what I do with my money is nobody’s business.”

Here are some other comments from Twitter;

@Clement: “Indaboski just swindles people money in the name of Christianity and cannot be seen as Rev. King.”

@OkeydeGeneral “ I wonder how people believe that these native doctors are pastors.Anambra state nawa oh, from Rev King to Eddy in Nawgu, to more recently Odumeje, and Onyeze Jesus.”

@Ujay148 “ Is it not better that these men answer chief priest with their full chest? Why call themselves pastors and men of God when they are not.Just negodi.”

@Jaqualine “ CAN need to start compulsory registration of all ‘churches’, all these is nonsense Christianity?

@GreatAtagana “ In the 90s there was Professor Moshood Abiola Peller a renowned magician who never shy away from his profession. Now you don’t see any magician on street but you can find them all on the pulpits performing abracadabra and cheap parlor tricks. Pastor magician Onyeze Jesus indeed.”

@EzePatrickTwit1 “You see that Man called ONYEZE JESUS (AKA.EkELU OLU EKE). God will use his end which will soon come to expose some so call men of God in Nigeria whom people will never believe they are into diabolical. Mark this.”

Six samples of deadly UK COVID-19 variant found in Nigeria

The Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) and the African Centre for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID) at Redeemers University, Ede, have detected additional six UK COVID-19 variants known as B.1.1.7.

NCDC director-general, Chikwe, Ihekweazu, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja, at the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, briefing.

“On January, 30, our partners at ACEGID detected the B.1.1.7 variant in six additional samples – five from Osun and one from Kwara State. This is the variant of concern that first emerged in the UK.

“The five in Osun are most likely related to the fact that this is where ACEGID is and where they get a lot of samples from. In total, we have detected the B.1.1.7 variant in seven cases within Nigeria.

“This could imply community transmission of this variant of concern. We are currently scaling up on genomic surveillance, working very closely with ACEGID.

“Specifically, we have begun sequencing positive samples among travellers from the UK and South Africa, who test positive on the seventh day of testing.

“We are developing a protocol to sequence more samples from across states at ACEGID and our sister-agency, NIMR. This is in addition to our capacity at the NCDC National Reference Laboratory,” he explained.

The NCDC boss said that finally there was really no magic bullet with the variants of concern. Currently, the message was still the same.

“Please avoid large gatherings, wash your hands regularly, wear a face mask properly and ensure physical distancing,” he advised.

Ihekweazu noted that the agent have continued to review the global and national situation with regards to the variants of concern, and how it affects the nation’s response.

“We are all aware that with increasing transmission, the virus is adapting to the human population leading to what is known as variants of concern.

“In most countries, it is still not clear if the variants of concern are leading to increased transmission, or if the increase in cases is as a result of poor adherence to public health and social measures.

“An additional layer of response required to really understand the variants of concern, is with genetic sequencing and genomic surveillance.

“We have begun this at the NCDC National Reference Laboratory with our partners at ACEGID at Redeemers University, Ede,” he explained.

Orlu crisis: Varsity don condemns killing of civilians, backs IPOB’s ESN

A lecturer of Microbiology, in the Imo State University (IMSU), Dr. Ken Nwanekwu has condemned the alleged destruction of properties and killing of innocent civilians by soldiers in Orlu council area of Imo state.

The lecturer who spoke to DAILY POST on Monday at his office, stressed the importance of sustaining the Eastern Security Network established by the IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

He said that the eastern part of the country had been made susceptible to various attacks due to lack of indigenous security outfit, calling on all leaders of Igbo extraction to throw their weight behind its (ESN) formation and sustainability.

“It’s very unfortunate that the military could engage head-on in a shootout or confrontation with unarmed members of Eastern Security Network for whatever reason.

“This is both unacceptable and unwarranted. Look at the number of innocent civilians being killed by the Nigerian soldiers for no just cause.

“Members of the Igbo community should rise up to the occasion and realize the need to establish a viable indigenous security outfit just like Amotekun in Yorubaland and Hisbah in the north, which will protect the land from unwarranted attacks.

“The federal government has kept mum to the issue of Fulani herdsmen’s incessant attacks on farmers. Day in, day out, these cattle herders move around communities destroying farmlands and maiming and killing innocent people who try to stop them.

“There are large hectares of land lying fallow in the north. These herders should be asked to build ranches on those fallow lands for their grazing rather than destroying peoples vegetation in the eastern part of the country.

“It’s about time Igbos spoke out in one voice against the marginalization and total neglect meted out to them,” he said.

He further urged the leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo not to be compromised in chatting a better way forward for the people, frowning at the lopsidedness witnessed in the recent appointment of various service chiefs by President Muhammadu Buhari, which overtly excluded the southeast.

On Igbo presidency come 2023, he maintained that it was only natural justice and fairness to freely allow an Igbo man to clinch the seat of power in line with the rotational stand of the three ethnic groups where Hausa and Yoruba had benefited.

He, however, called for the coming together of all the Igbo towards achieving that feat.

AREWA REPUBLIC !!! Hisbah storms hotels, confiscates 260 crates of alcoholic drinks

The Bauchi State Hisbah Board has confiscated 260 crates of alcoholic drinks from hotels and night clubs as part of its effort to enforce Sharia Islamic code.

Malam Aminu Balarabe the permanent commissioner in charge of Hisbah and Sharia implementation made this known while displaying the commodity in Bauchi on Tuesday.

He said 216 crates were confiscated in Misau local government area and 44 in Bauchi club and some beer parlours located in Dass park in Bauchi metropolis.

” We will continue to beam our searchlight to unravel perpetrators of such misdemeanours” he said.

He said the department would soon seek for a court order to destroy the items as the subsisting Sharia law which was implemented in 2003 has unequivocally prohibited sales and consumption of alcoholic drinks.

Balarabe who displayed the confiscated drinks at the premises of the state Sharia commission explained that no fewer than six operators of beer parlours were arrested during the patrol and they would soon be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.

”The only places where sales and consumption of alcoholic drinks are allowed are Military and Police barracks, National parks. We are fully committed to implementing our mandate,” he said.

Hisbah department in Bauchi recently arrested some young men in Tafawa Balewa LGA who specialise in organising sex parties and committing other criminal tendencies.

Malam Aminu Idris, the permanent commissioner in-charge of Hisbah and Sharia implementation, told NAN that the suspects were in the habit of organising disco parties, locally called Gwaidu, during which they lured young girls into illicit sexual relationships, while at times they used force to intimidate innocent people.

After discreet investigations, the commissioner said, the state Hisbah office summoned the parents of the culprits, counselled them and made them sign an undertaking against repeating the offence.

Idris said the Hisbah department would, henceforth, not hesitate to prosecute such culprits in a competent court of law, stressing, “As a Lawyer, I will do everything possible to ensure that our existing laws were not flagrantly violated.”

He appealed to the state government to hasten the appointment of the state Hisbah Board, as well as provide additional financial and logistics support to the department to enable it to perform optimally.

‘They carried out brazen abductions’ — Abia accuses herders of kidnapping

The Abia state government has accused herders of kidnapping citizens of the state.

John Okiyi Kalu, the state commissioner for information, made the allegation in a statement on Monday.

He said the state government also condemned the destruction of farmlands by cows grazing openly.

The commissioner said Okezie Ikpeazu, the state governor, has directed security operatives to investigate the destruction farmlands and the kidnapping cases in Abia north senatorial district.

He asked residents to go about their daily activities because the state government is responding to the situation.

“Abia State Government wishes to condemn in its entirety the recent destruction of farmlands by cows grazing openly in violation of extant laws of the state and Nigeria,” he said.

“It also condemns, without reservations, the activities of criminal herdsmen suspected to have masterminded recent brazen kidnap of innocent citizens around Abia North Senatorial Zone of the State.

“Consequently, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has directed security agents in the state to bring to justice all those involved in the criminal activities.

“Government also frowns seriously at the wanton destruction of cows by yet to be identified individuals whose aim is to exacerbate already existing tensions.

“Government has fully activated all relevant components of the state security architecture to ensure the safety of lives and property of law abiding citizens, residents and visitors to the state.

“We therefore call on the people to go about their legitimate businesses without fear as government is on top of the situation and will spare nothing in protecting Abians.”

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) had issued a 14-day ultimatum to south-east governors to enforce the anti-grazing law.

NIN registration: Federal Government extends deadline

The Federal Government has extended the National Identity Number, NIN, registration deadline by 8 weeks

This was contained in a statement signed by Mr. Kayode Adegoke, Head, Corporate, National Identity Management Commission, NIMC.

“The ongoing National Identification Number (NIN) and Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) integration exercise has been extended by 8 weeks, with a new deadline of April 6, 2021,” he said.

According to the statement, this message was conveyed by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Pantami, during the meeting of the Ministerial Taskforce on NIN-SIM registration, which was held on the 1st of February, 2021.

Dr Pantami stated that the extension is to give Nigerians and legal residents more time to integrate their NIN with their SIM.

The meeting was chaired by the Honourable Minister and attended by key stakeholders, including the EVC/CEO of NCC, DG/CEO of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), DG/CEO of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON).

Others include the MD/CEOs of MTN, Airtel, 9Mobile, Ntel, Spectranet and SMILE, as well as the COO of Globacom.

It was reported that a total of 56.18 million NINs have been collected by the mobile network operators.

Each NIN is usually tied to an average of 3 to 4 SIMs and this infers that the current figure accounts for a significant portion of the existing SIMs.

This number of NINs collected represents a significant increase when compared with the 47.8 million reported by the Technical Committee on January 18, 2021.

“Furthermore, over 1060 registration centres for NIN have been activated and made operational by NIMC across the country, while Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) have opened hundreds of centres and are rapidly deploying resources to open thousands of other NIN enrolment centres across states of the country.

“This is in line with the policy of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to enhance security and make the process of obtaining NINs easier for Nigerians,” he said.

Dr. Pantami reiterated the need for Nigerians and legal residents who are yet to register for the NIN to be diligent and take advantage of the extension to enroll for their NIN and link with their SIMs.

The Federal Government applauded all Nigerians and persons of other nationalities for their understanding, cooperation “and for enthusiastically participating in the exercise.

“The minister implores applicants to follow the safety guidelines at all the NIN enrolment centers and ensure compliance with the booking system in place.”

DNA shatters Justice Okorodas: 3 kids from ex-wife not his own

A judge of the Delta State High Court Justice Anthony Ezonfade Okorodas has revealed that his first three children born by his first wife were not his biological children.

Okorodas found the shattering news after DNA test was conducted on the children of the ex-wife, Celia Juliet Ototo, a lawyer.

Okorodads and the woman parted ways 11 years ago.

According to him, his curiosity to conduct the DNA on Celia’s children was fired by an anonymous caller, who said the last of the children, does not belong to him, biologically.

Okorodas ordered the DNA test for the 17 year-old child. He was shocked by the result as it confirmed the information.

Then he ordered the test for the other two: the same result.

Celia Juliet Ototo had cheated on him all along before the separation 11 years ago.

Okorodas had since remarried and fathered four other children. The DNA has confirmed all to be his.

Read Okorodas press statement:

I have taken the decision to address the Press in respect of certain traumatic developments that have arisen between me and my ex-wife, Barrister Celia Juliet Ototo of the Ototo Family of Ovom in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. It is now nearly 11 years since our separation and divorce. This Press Statement is important in order to prevent damaging speculations, half- truths and outright lies from persons who may want to cash in on the tragedy that has befallen my home.

Sometime during the coronavirus lockdowns early last year, I received information from an anonymous source that indicated that the last of the three children from my previous marriage was in fact not my biological child. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions at the time, I had to wait until August 2020 to carry out a DNA test. The DNA test result which came out in September 2020 confirmed that I was not the biological father of the child.

Consequently, I convened a joint meeting between my extended family on the one side, and Celia’s paternal and maternal families (i.e., the Ototo Family of Ovom Town and the Agbagidi Family of Yenagoa Town) on the other side, where I confronted her with the paternity fraud allegation. Although she initially strongly insisted that I was the biological father, she has since confessed to having the child with another man during the course of our marriage.

This repulsive act of my ex-wife prompted me to conduct DNA tests in respect of the two other children. A few days ago, the results came out. Sadly, none of them is my biological child.

This abomination has caused excruciating mental trauma to me, my present wife, Barrister (Mrs) Ebi Okorodas and all of the innocent children involved. This is particularly so for Ebi, who has had to agree to having DNA tests on the four children of our own marriage. Thankfully, the test results confirm each of them to be my biological child.

It is important to state that Celia walked away from the marriage when her youngest child (who is now 17 years of age) was just 6 years old. Since then, all of her children have lived with my wife, Ebi and I, and we have been wholly responsible for their wellbeing and education. Friends who are close to my family

would readily attest to the fact that unless specifically informed, no one could tell that the children were not the biological children of my present wife.

Ebi and I would continue to support the children in any way that we can. Indeed, even after the release of the first DNA test result which proved that I was not the biological father of the last child, we have continued to pay for his education in a private boarding school. The two other children are University undergraduates. The first, a female, will be a graduate later this year, and the second will soon enter his 4th year of study. We pray for them to overcome the trauma and become responsible citizens of our country.

For Celia and her boyfriend or boyfriends, we leave them to their conscience.
