11 years after : Gani lives in our hearts

Chief Gani Fawehinmi belongs to a select class of very few mortals worldwide who are instantly recognizable by their first names. It is a most apt remark for the name (wherever it is called) that leaves no one in doubt as to whom is being referred to. So I shall subsequently refer to Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, as simply Gani. It is still painful talking about Gani in the past having known him for two decades.

Our paths crossed in the anti-military battles of the early and mid eighties and I worked closely with him as one time coordinator, National Conscience Party, Kwara State October 10, 1994, while he was the Chairman.

I equally had the privilege of associating with him while he was the Chairperson of Joint Action Committee of Nigeria (JACON) as well as in Campaign for Democracy, NADECO etc.

The first thing that strikes you about Gani is his consistency. This consistent pursuit earned him many brushes with virtually all military and civilian dictators. Focused, dedicated and resilient, Gani devoted the better part of his life to the struggle for genuine democracy, promotion of the rule of law and entrenchment of constitutional governance in Nigeria.

He was a great life wire of the pro-democracy and human rights movement in Nigeria.

Gani believed so much in documentation, few days before he stopped going to his chambers he still showed me the first day I was at his chambers with Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti march 2nd 1985.

I must say he was a man of details, he believes in accountability.

He was a humanist par excellence, and had uncommon compassion for the poor. One cannot forget his philanthropy, dedication and absolute loyalty to common causes.

In the practice of law, Gani was litigation personified, a brilliant advocate, his chambers has handled thousands of cases.

It is indisputable that Gani, single-handed, filed more cases in courts against various governments than any other individual dead or alive.

It has been documented that between 1969 and 1996, Gani was detained not less than forty times, had his passport seized not less than 20 times, with his house and offices searched and vandalized 16 times.

Gani had milk of compassion. It is on record that Gani, since 1971 when he was 33,  started awarding scholarships to indigent but brilliant students of tertiary institutions. He was an advocate of free and compulsory education at all levels to every Nigerian youth who is desirous of education.

We shall not have to speak of courage in the future because Gani has taught us that in him all the elements were well blended.

As a lasting tribute to this legend, a unique gift to humanity, social crusader, orator, human rights activist, humanist, philanthropist, we must emulate all the virtues he lived and died for.

Gani, your ideals, achievements and your legacies remain imperishable in our hearts.

Speaking on the planned strike, Femi Falana, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), described the hike in electricity tariff and fuel price as an anti-people development.

“There is going to be a general strike and protest. We will fix a date after a meeting this evening,” Falana told PUNCH.

“ASCAB is meeting with TUC leadership and about 79 others have indicated that they will take part in the national day of action against these anti-people developments. It will be next week but the date has not been picked yet.

“Other nations are giving cash to their citizens, cancelling rents but Nigeria is imposing taxes and all other levies on its citizens. We will fight against it.”

“We state that the NLC seriously frowns at, completely condemns and totally rejects any plan to inflict further pain on Nigerians at this very time of great economic distress,” Ayuba said.

“The new dribble by the Abuja DisCo is dead on arrival as it will be resisted by the Nigerian working class and people. The other DisCos should not bother putting their ships of exploitation to sail.”

How re-opening of churches led to decrease in Coronavirus – Oyedepo

Presiding Bishop, Living Faith Worldwide, David Oyedepo on Saturday said the re-opening of churches led to decrease in Coronavirus infections across the nation.

Oyedepo, at the church’s Covenant Hour of Prayer, CHoP, used Lagos and Ogun States as case study for his assertion, saying that COVID-19 had continued to decrease due to re-opening of churches.

According to him, some individuals were saying when churches were re-opened, there would be rise in Coronavirus.

“I’ve never seen where people think like that. The Church is ordained a solution centre for the world. This data is a clear evidence that the Church has the solution; when we pray, God hears.

“Thank God for the prayers we pray in the house; there is a prayer we pray in the Temple where the fire comes from Heaven and consumes the sacrifice. That’s why we are here. Jesus is Lord,” he said.

According to Oyedepo, “The same way, my God will level out every everlasting mountain standing before your life. You can’t be at the base of Liberation and be a victim of captivity. From now, they will start recording zero, zero, zero cases of coronavirus”

Churches in Lagos were re-opened on 9 August, while Ogun churches were re-opened on 16 August, 2020.

Below is Oyedepo’s analysis

I gave wooden guns to movie makers, not kidnappers – Lecturer

Controversy is trailing the parade of two movie producers, Samuel  Bobmanuel and Justice  Nwigbara, as alleged kidnappers by the  Rivers  State Police Command.

Diepreye Precious, a lecturer at the Department of  Theater Arts Federal College  of Education Technical at Omoku in Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni local government area of Rivers State has revealed that contrary to the claims of the police, he gave the two men alleged to be kidnappers the wooden guns found in their possession.

He said he gave the two men the guns for their movie production.

The lecturer also said he constructed the wooden guns himself.

The Theater Arts Lecturer maintained that the movie producers do not need any license from the Police to use wooden gun for movie production.

He said they only need their ID as actors.

The lecturer, who is a member of Port Harcourt branch of National Association of Theater Arts Practitioner of Nigeria and the technical personnel of the association said he will stand by the movie producers.

Recall that the Rivers Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mukan, had in a press briefing on Thursday claimed that the duo of Bob Manuel from Oron in Akwa-Ibom State and  NwiIIgbara from Baani in Khana Rivers state were notorious kidnappers arrested by men of police anti-kidnapping unit at Rumuosi part of Port Harcourt when they were planning to embark on kidnap mission

But Bobmanuel had explained to journalists during the parade that the men of anti-kidnapping unit of Miniokoro saw his colleague, Mr. Nwiigbara at Rumuosi during stop and search and collected his handset.

Bobmanuel disclosed that the Police saw the picture of NwiIIgbara with carved wooden AK 47 rifle in the phone and started interrogating him.

The movie producer stated that his colleague told the Police he was into film production and they brought his colleague to their office, Lavanz Film Academy, to confirm that claim.

But he added that the Police arrested him and took all the carved wooden guns they used in producing a recent film ‘shooting spree’.

He said “I pleaded with them to allow me call my lecturer who own the carved wooden guns to bring the license but the Police refused and took me to a place where they snapped us with the carved wooden guns and throw us inside their cell’.

Explaining further, he said  “when I wanted to start the film production I approached Choba DPO to give us a realistic gun, but he declined that we cannot use real guns”.

“I approached one of my lecturers since I am a student of Theater Arts and he gave me his own carved wooden guns and promised to bring the licence if Police ask of it “.

The suspects regretted that the Police officers who arrested them at about 4PM (Wednesday) confiscated their phones and refused to allow them to call the Theater Arts lecturer who owns the carved wooden guns.

‘Buhari promised to make life better’ — Catholic archbishops reject petrol price hike

Two Catholic archbishops have kicked against the federal government’s decision to increase electricity tariff and petrol price, saying it contradicts the Buhari administration’s promise to make life better for Nigerians.

Speaking at the maiden general assembly of the Catholic archdiocese of Abuja, Ignatius Kaigama and John Onaiyekan said the government should reconsider the move because citizens are suffering.

The government through the Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC) recently increased the ex-depot price of petrol from N138.62 to N151.56 per litre.

Following the increment, petrol marketers raised the price of the product from N148 to between N158 and N162 per litre.

This came days after electricity distribution companies (DisCos) in the country began the implementation of the new cost-reflective electricity tariff.

Addressing journalists at the general assembly which was held in Abuja, Kaigama, Catholic archbishop of Abuja diocese, asked the government to consider poor Nigerians over the policies.

He said: “I can only beg on behalf of the poor and the needy that government should have mercy on us. We are at the grassroots and I meet people who are really poor and in need and with all these increases, it makes life more intolerable.

“As a priest, I can only pray that God will do something for the poor and the needy but God doesn’t operate in a vacuum; He uses our leaders, the president, the governors and local government chairmen. I know they can do something.

“Let them just look at the poor and the needy with the eyes of mercy and strategise. There is a way out, they can be helped.

“As a witness, people are in agony and are suffering. The government is their father; the government is their leader. Let them do something.”

Also speaking, Onaiyekan, a former archbishop of the diocese, tackled the government for worsening the cost of living.

“Mr. President, in the same breath, was telling us he was going to do all he can to make life easier for Nigerians and one of the things he can do is those increases,” he said.

“Fuel price increase and electricity tariff increase should be put in a wider context. We wouldn’t be complaining about fuel price increase if the salaries were also increased.

“The problem comes when you leave the people with nothing to eat. I don’t think the government is supposed to be doing that. They should find a way to make life liveable for Nigerians.”
