Police sergeant kills Intels staff Abiodun Jimoh over ‘bail money’

A Police sergeant in Rivers State has killed a staff of Onne-based Intels over demand for ‘bail money’, despite police authorities saying ‘bail is free’.

His victim was Abiodun Jimoh from Kwara state.

Ismail Jimoh, brother to Abiodun said police officers on a patrol stopped him and his brother while they were on motorbike going back to the house on Friday 18 December 2020.

He said one of the police officers insisted on taking them to the Police station at Elelenwo.

But the officer refused.

Ismail said as the police sergeant began to beat his brother in front of the Police station, he heard two gunshots.

When he turned back, his brother was lying on the floor, in pains.

According to Ismail, he and the other Police Officers took his brother to three different hospitals, but they declined attending to him.

On their way to University of Port Harcourt Hospital,UPTH, the officers drove so recklessly that he fell out from the back of the patrol van.

He was seriously injured.

He further alleged that the Police officers did not wait to check on him, they just drove off with his brother.

He noted that it was in the morning of 19 December, when he went back to the Elelewon station, with his brother’s wife, that they learned the brother died.

Ismail called on well meaning Nigerians to ensure justice is done on the matter.

Azeezat Omolara Jimoh, wife of Abiodun Jimoh wept uncontrollably while speaking to Journalists.

She expressed shock that her husband was killed for no reason.

She called on the Rivers State Government, the Police authorities in the state and well meaning Nigerians to come to their aide.

A human rights activist, Prince Wiro, expressed worry at the prevailing trend of policemen killing innocent citizens.

Wiro called on the Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mukan, to immediately open an investigation into the incident with a view to prosecuting any of his officers found culpable.

Boko Haram: Gov Zulum blasts military as insurgents kidnap 30 travelers in Jakana

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum on Monday berated the military over the attacks on travelers and villagers by Boko Haram insurgents in Jakana area of the state.

Jakana is one of the major towns along Maiduguri-Damaturu highway where Boko Haram has been carrying series of successful attacks on travelers.

The Governor was in the town following Friday’s kidnap of over 30 travelers by the insurgents.

Zulum said that he was majorly disappointed for the fact that majority of the attacks within the last two years, took place between Auno and Jakana, a distance of about 20 kilometers.

The Governor, who noted that he had had occasions to defend the military to boost their morale, said however, that he was “really disappointed that despite all support from both the Federal Government and from us in Borno state, our military is failing to secure an area of 20 kilometers, which is the distance between Auno and Jakana.”

The lamented that attacks in the area keeps happening, wondering “if the military cannot secure 20 kilometers, how can they keep us with the hope they will defeat the Boko Haram?”

The Governor was not angry with military alone but also lambasted the state established Rapid Response Squad for lack of visibility along the Maiduguri-Damaturu road.

“With all you (journalists) we drove from Maiduguri to here, Jakana. We did not see soldiers on the road, we did not see even our own rapid response squad on this road and they were trained, employed, kitted and paid to protect all Nigerians.”

Recall that over 10 vehicles including buses carrying passengers along the Maiduguri-Damaturu road were intercepted on Friday by Boko Haram terrorists and ISWAP at about 3:00pm around Jakana village with many passengers abducted.

I was tortured, extorted under supervision of DCP Abba Kyari, businessman tells panel

Afeez Mojeed, a businessman, says some police officers, under the supervision of Abba Kyari, a deputy commissioner of police (DCP), allegedly tortured him and forced him to reveal the password to his ATM card through which N450,000 was withdrawn from his bank account.

Mojeed, while appearing before the Lagos state judicial panel set up to probe police brutality on Saturday, narrated how he was arrested by four gun-wielding policeman from the now disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), who broke into his house on the night of October 18, 2014, forcefully collected some valuables and took him to the SARS office in Ikeja, where he was tortured and detained for 14 days – from October 18 to October 31, 2014.

The petitioner, while crying, told the panel that his torture and extortion by the SARS officer was “under the supervision of DCP Abba Kyari” who was the officer in charge of the now disbanded SARS in Lagos as of 2014 when he was arrested.

“The police under the supervision and threat of Abba Kyari (OC SARS) forced him to sign three Zenith Bank cheques in the sum of N150,000 each making N450,000 in total on October 22 – 23, 2014 and gave the sum to one Alabi Olawale Nurudeen who is also one of their cronies to withdraw,” Mojeed had said in his petition.

Narrating his ordeal before the panel on Friday, the Lagos-based businessman said he was watching television with his two-year-old child and mother-in-law, when the four SARS operatives robed in casual clothes with guns arrived at his apartment and broke his door to gain access on October 18 2014 around 9:00 pm.

He said after the SARS operatives forcibly gained access to his apartment, he was chained and handcuffed, while the operatives were pulling off his wedding ring, Tissot wristwatch and ransacking all aspects of his house.

TheCable had reported Mojeed’s petition wherein he accused Kyari of supervising his torture and extortion, including forcing him to sign three Zenith bank cheques in the sum of N150,000 each making N450,000.

“I was in my apartment around 8 to 9 pm with my two-year-old child, my mother-in-law, watching TV in the sitting room. My wife was in the kitchen cooking, five months pregnant. I heard a big bang on my door with a voice shouting open this door or I bring down the door, I was afraid as if it was armed robber before I could summon courage to get to the door, they pulled down my door,” he said.

“They chained my leg on the floor then and they handcuffed my both hands behind me, in the process of doing that, one of the men pulled my wedding ring from my finger and collected my Tissot wristwatch, they collected my wife wedding rings with several slaps and ordered her to bring polythene bag.

“They went to my room, approached my cupboard and they took the sum of N280,000 and ransack all aspect of my house.”

Mojeed said the SARS operatives took documents like his Zenith current account chequebook, four documents of landed properties, two shop documents, ID card, car documents, and a car key to Honda Accord model 2008 with the sum of N50,000 which was inside the car that was taken by the men.

He said he was later taken to the Ikeja police command around 11:00 pm that day — after they had pushed his mother-in-law with his child inside a gutter.

Mojeed said: “The document they collected from me I will not be able to list them, it is inside the petition. They collected Zenith bank current account chequebooks, my ATM cards they collected four landed documents, two shop documents, my car document and key to 2008 Honda Accord.

“During the process, they matched me down to the ground and collected the sum of N50, 000 from my car, when they stood me down my son and mother-in-law started shouting for what happened, in the process they pushed her into the gutter with my son behind her.

“They drove the car off, my wife was asking where they are taking me with to. The allegation that was placed on me as of then was that my car was a stolen vehicle. They came in mufti. They pulled me inside their van. We got to Ikeja command around 11:00pm, when we got there, I told them I have all the documents; they called me all sort of names and beat me till around 2:00 am that day.”

The petitioner claimed that the SARS operatives, the next day, asked for the password to his personal account, which he initially concealed, and when they were not able to “cash out”, they tortured him.

“I gave them the password to my personal phone, which I received all my financial messages,” he said.

“They said I should tell them the password of my ATM card of my current account. I gave them the wrong pin, they came back and did not cash out, I was then beaten mercilessly.”

Explaining another reason given by the police for his arrest, he said: “They presented a man to me named Edward Obinna that I defrauded him of N97 million, he said he paid through my company account. I said that is very good that I will print out my account statement and you will see where you paid me.

“He later changed it that it was my cousin he paid the sum of N97 million; that he paid Yusuf Olatunji Balogun who is my cousin the sum of N97 million to procure some earth-moving equipment and he has been working with Olatunji Balogun for the past two years and that Olatunji Balogun paid the money to my account.”

The petitioner explained that his cousin Balogun usually pays him money to buy properties on his behalf, adding that he did not know Edward Obinna prior to the the encounter, and that Obinna even admitted not knowing him.

He said: “The so called Mr. Obinna, I have never seen you or have any business with you in my life, he admitted that he does not know me and he has not done any business dealing with me. That same day at night when Mr Obi has left they took me to private cell and they started torturing me, tied and hung me with a rod and beat me with a machete, all because of the wrong pin I gave to them, I was screaming, when they released me I gave them the pin to my Zenith ATM.”

Explaining the alleged role of Kyari, he said, “On October 22, under the supervision of Abba Kyari, in their custody, I signed a cheque from my personal account to a faceless person named Nurudeen Alabi, N150,000, twice.

“On the same day, I was brought to Ajah, Ikota at Ecobank, there was this money I fixed with Ecobank, they brought me to unfix it and transfer the money to them, the total amount of that money is N15 million, the account officer was suspicious he did not accept the application, he said my investment is not yet ripe.

“They again took me to Ajah at Diamond bank to my corporate account, they said I should transfer the sum of 41 million to Edward Obinna, due to the process of terminating the account, they asked me to come, the next day.

“Getting to Ikeja command, they said I played prank on them. I beat and tied my arm and leg, they took iron and hung me; I was there for 30 minutes, I could not see anything. I was just hearing words like, ‘put in on the ground and pour water’. When I regained myself they took me to the cell, around 2:00am.”

Narrating further while crying, he said: “The following day on October 23 they brought me out with some men and took me to Ajah, Diamond bank, before getting to the bank, they branched a boutique and bought me a new clothes and cleaned me up and wore me the clothes they bought.

“Mr Edward Obinna was behind us in his own car, following us I was being led inside the bank with two officers who sat like customers and they told me to take transfer form and transfer N41 million to Mr Obinna, I did the transfer of N41 million to the account of Mr Obinna, he sat down there till he received the message of the alert.

“They took me to Ikeja; they took me back to the cell, that day again they started torturing me that there is still more, they tortured me and said I should write a note and sign on it. That I transferred the 41 million from my current account diamond bank to Mr Obinna.”

After the petitioner has testified, Kabir Akingbolu asked for adjournment to enable him to present documents to the panel.

Hearing of the case was adjourned till January 19, 2021.

LaLiga: Messi reveals why he wanted to leave Barcelona, gives update on future

Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi, has spoken out on his situation at the club, as he enters the final six months of his contract.

Messi submitted an official transfer request last summer, following Barca’s 8-2 humbling against Bayern Munich in last season’s Champions League quarter-finals.

Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain were all mooted as possible next destinations for the 33-year-old, but he quickly saw his exit path blocked by Blaugrana and LaLiga officials.

Messi eventually made a u-turn and remained with the Spanish giants in a bid to avoid a legal tussle.

He, however, took aim at the Barca board, accusing former club president Josep Maria Bartomeu of failing to keep his promises.

Messi is yet to extend his deal and will be free to commit to a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs in January.

“The truth is that today I’m fine. It’s true that I had a very bad time in the summer,” Messi told La Sexta.

“It came from before. What happened before the summer, because of how the season ended, the burofax and all that. Then I dragged it on a bit at the beginning of the season.

“But today I’m fine and I feel like fighting seriously for everything that lies ahead, [I’m] excited.

“I know that the club is going through a difficult time, at club level and everything that surrounds Barcelona, but I’m looking forward to it.”

How Nigerians in diaspora can register for NIN

Abike Dabiri-Erewa has directed Nigerians abroad to visit the website of the National Identity Management Commission to enable them to register for the National Identity Number.

The chairman of the Nigerians In Diaspora Commission, in a tweet on Monday, noted that the details of the agents who are accredited to register Nigerians for NIN can be found on the website.

“Nigerians abroad should visit NIMC website http://nimc.gov.ng for details of their agents accredited to register Nigerians abroad all over the world,” she tweeted.

Abike’s statement was aimed at assisting Nigerian abroad from being blocked from communicating with their sims after the Nigerian Communication Commission ordered telecommunications companies to block mobile phone SIM cards that are not linked to NIN.

The NCC had given the companies a duration of two weeks before implementing the suspension on SIM cards whose owners fail to provide NIN.

The deadline was on Monday (today) extended as revealed by the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy in a statement titled, ‘Extension of Registration Period and Cancellation of USSD and Verification Fees’.

This was after a meeting chaired by the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami, and attended by major stakeholders in the telecommunications sector.

Resolutions reached gave “Three (3) weeks extension for subscribers with NIN from 30th December, 2020 to 19th January, 2021; and Six (6) weeks extension for subscribers without NIN from 30th December, 2020 to 9th February, 2021.”

Countries banning UK flights grow, Latin America joins EU, Canada

Argentina, Chile and Colombia have joined EU countries and Canada banning flights from UK due to concerns over a new, highly contagious variant of the COVID-19.

Argentina will “suspend arrivals and departures to and from Britain as a precaution from tomorrow (today),” the interior ministry in Buenos Aires wrote in a statement Sunday evening.

A single flight from Britain expected for Monday morning has been allowed to land at Buenos Aires International Airport.

Passengers and crew will be kept in quarantine for seven days.

The Colombian government also decided on Sunday to no longer allow flights to and from Britain from Monday, President Ivan Duque wrote on Twitter.

Accordingly, passengers who have arrived in the past eight days must be quarantined.

According to a statement, the Chilean government decided to suspend direct flights to and from Britain from Tuesday.

Foreigners who do not have permanent residence in Chile and have been in Britain in the past two weeks are also not allowed to enter.

Chileans and foreigners who have a permanent residence must be in a 14-day quarantine.

In the EU, the Netherlands was the first on Sunday to announce an immediate ban on flights.

Similar advisories emerged from Belgium, Austria, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Bulgaria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Sweden.

Ireland will institute a 48-hour flight ban to Britain while ferries will be limited to freight travel.

Outside of Europe, the Canadian government also announced it would ban flights from Britain for 72 hours starting on Monday.

Germany banned nearly all flights from Britain starting from midnight, with a few exceptions, including cargo planes.

The German Interior Ministry also ordered the police to immediately begin checking passengers from Britain.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has called a meeting of civil contingencies committee on Monday in response to the flight bans, Downing Street said, according to the British Press Association.

The new strain is “out of control,” British Health Secretary Matt Hancock told BBC News on Sunday.

The recently discovered variant is up to 70 per cent more contagious than the previously known form, but there was no evidence it was more deadly.

Individual cases of the variant have apparently already been found in other EU countries.

Health authorities in both the Netherlands and Italy reported that a virus with the variant described in Britain has been identified in their countries in the past few weeks.

The Dutch public health institute RIVM said the variant was identified in a random sample in the Netherlands in early December, and that further investigation was planned.

Italy’s health ministry said that a patient and their partner who returned from Britain by plane a few days ago were found to have the variant.

They arrived in Rome’s international airport and are both in isolation, the ministry stated.

Virologist Christian Drosten, who has become a household name in Germany for his role as a government COVID-19 adviser, said the strain had yet to be seen in Germany.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has advised health authorities and laboratories in Europe to analyse and sequence virus samples to detect its potential spread.

It also urged the testing, isolation, and follow-up of anyone linked to cases.

Any cases should be reported through the EU’s early warning and response system, the agency said.

Experts widely agreed that vaccines would be effective against the variant.

“I don’t see any reason for alarm at the moment,” said Richard Neher from the Biozentrum of the University of Basel.

Andreas Bergthaler from the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna does not consider the current development to be “incredibly alarming” either, noting it is not uncommon for mutations to appear among pathogens.

To curtail the spread, Britain announced a new lockdown for London and parts of south and eastern England starting Sunday and over the Christmas period.

The measures affect 16 million people.

With some exceptions, in the hardest-hit areas, households are not allowed to mix, people may not stay overnight away from home and all non-essential shops are closed.

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke with top European Union leaders by phone on Sunday to iron out a joint approach.

Germany, which currently holds the rotating EU presidency, has called representatives of other member states for an emergency meeting on Monday over the new coronavirus variant.

The European Commission is in contact with the member states to increase the flow of information and help with coordination, a source in the executive branch told dpa.

But Britain’s alarm late Saturday prompted countries in the European Union to take their own actions on Sunday, ordering travel restrictions to prevent the variant from spreading.

The Dutch flight ban is set to last until Jan. 1, while Belgium’s suspension affects all flights and trains – including the important Eurostar route – and kicks in at midnight (2300 GMT).

France has imposed a ban on travel from Britain by land, sea, rail, and air that will initially last 48 hours.

Only unaccompanied cargo is allowed, according to the French prime minister’s office.

Meanwhile, Britain’s important Port of Dover has banned all outgoing freight for 48 hours.

Freight from coming to Britain from France will be allowed, but there are fears lorry drivers will not travel to avoid being stuck in the country, the BBC reported.

The last train from Britain through the tunnel to France departed London on Sunday evening, according to operator Getlink.
