2019 polls: 259 declare interests in 35 seats in Ekiti

Two hundred and fifty-nine aspirants have declared interests in senatorial, House of Representatives and House of Assembly seats in next year’s general elections in Ekiti State.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that prospective candidates would contest for the three senatorial seats, six House of Representatives’ seats and 26 seats in the House of Assembly in 2019.
No fewer than 40 persons are currently seeking the nod of their political parties for the national and state assemblies’ seats from the five most visible parties in the state.
The number of aspirants is expected to increase as the build-up to the 2019 polls continues to gather momentum.
The prominent parties in the state are: the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the incoming All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP), MEGA Party, Accord Party (AP) and the Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN).
Many of the aspirants have flooded Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, and other major towns, like Ikole-Ekiti, Ikere-Ekiti, Ijero-Ekiti, Emure-Ekiti and Ifaki-Ekiti, with their campaign billboards, handbills and posters.
The aspirants include Senators Fatimat Raji-Rasaki, Biodun Olujimi, Ayo Arise and Olubunmi Adetumbi.

Also, the former Secretary-General of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Obafemi Adewale and a former member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Opeyemi Bamidele have indicated interests in the seats.
Others are: a former chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the state, Mr Tai Oguntayo; a former Chief of Staff, Chief Yemi Adaramodu and the former Special Adviser on Documentation, Hakeem Jamiu.
The list also include: Dr Segun Osinkolu, Mr. Demola Oladaiye and Mr Abayomi Lostay, among others.
Bamidele, who was Commissioner for Information and Strategy in Lagos State, told NAN that he is in the senatorial race.
He said the people of Ekiti Central Senatorial District considered him worthy of the office.
Also, Senator Arise said he is the best to represent the people of Ekiti North Senatorial District, considering his previous experience in the Senate, business background and track record.
Oguntayo, who is the chairman of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), pledged to bring his vast experience in unionism and public service into the legislative chamber in the state assembly.
He is also a former Secretary to Ekiti West Local Government Area.
The chairman of PPN in the state, Chief Dare Adekolu, told NAN that many of his party members were interested in one elective post or the other.
According to him, the party has no problems with the number of aspirants as it shows how democratic a party can be in accommodating all shades of opinions and aspirations.
Adekolu said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had directed that the political parties must conduct their primaries between September and October.
The PPN chairman said the outcome of such primaries would determine who would become the flag bearers of the various parties in next year’s general elections.
NAN reports that the parties in the state have kept the names of their presidential aspirants close to their chests.
But the governorship election was concluded on July 14 with Dr Kayode Fayemi becoming the governor-elect.

Oyo guber: Don’t waste N22.5m, APC will pick consensus candidate – Ajimobi warns aspirants

Govenor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has said that he would in conjunction with some leaders of Alł Progressives Congress (APC) meet with aspirants of the party on Saturday to pick consensus governorship and other elective candidates.

He stated that it would be wrong to encourage governorship aspirants to waste 22.5 million naira on nomination forms without emerging as the consensus candidate.
The goverynor spoke on Wednesday during the APC Oyo Central Senatorial District stakeholders’ meeting held at Durbar Stadium in Oyo.
The senatorial district comprises 11 local governments – Afijio, Atiba, Akinyele, Egbeda, Lagelu, Oluyole, Oyo East, Oyo West, Ogo-Oluwa, Ona-Ara and Surulere.
“We are going to meet with all the aspirants at the Government House in Ibadan on Saturday by 12 noon, while we will meet with aspiring lawmakers on Sunday at the same venue and time,” NAN quoted him as saying.
Ajimobi said the essence of the meeting, particularly those aspiring to be governor was to appeal to some of them to possibly step down and avoid waste of resources.
“Monday is the last day to obtain the governorship nomination form. We don’t want all our aspirants to collect the form and waste their resources when we can talk to them.
“All of them are qualified, with intimidating profiles, but only one of them will emerge. We can still ensure everyone is engaged in one area or the other for them to partake,” he said.
The Governor assured members of the public that APC remained the party to beat, adding none of the other parties was enjoying the unity and cohesion that exists in party. - Daily Post

Falana: No serious restructuring without equitable wealth redistribution

Falana: No serious restructuring without equitable wealth redistribution

Activist-lawyer Mr Femi Falana (SAN) said Wednesday said any restructuring of the country can only be meaningful if wealth is equitably distributed.
To him, merely restructuring Nigeria will not guarantee unity and political stability without the redistribution of wealth.
Falana was of the view that while the country needs power devolution, only the democratisation of powers and equitable redistribution of the commonwealth along egalitarian lines would engender unity.
In a paper delivered at the 19th Mike Okonkwo Annual Lecture in Lagos, the Senior Advocate said since the rich were united in exploiting the country’s national resources, the exploited poor and oppressed should unite to free themselves from poverty.
Falana said: “A leading People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has become one of the leading proponents of restructuring, but his support for restructuring has not addressed the crucial issue of the redistribution of the national wealth.
“After all, in his capacity as the nation’s Vice President and chairman of the National Council on Privatisation, Alhaji Abubakar presided over the restructuring of the nation’s economy through the liquidation of public assets and the privatisation of the commanding height of the economy.
“The policy led to a situation whereby all major public enterprises and assets including oil blocks were sold to the so called ‘core investors’.

“Such official transfer of the commonwealth to a few local and foreign corporate bodies will have to be reversed in the interests of the people.”
According to Falana, the nation cannot be seriously restructured without equitable redistribution of wealth.
“Therefore, those who have cornered the commonwealth should not be allowed to talk of restructuring in vacuo.
“In other words, the campaign for restructuring should encompass the decentralisation and democratisation of political and economic powers which have been privatised by all factions of the ruling class,” he said.
The leading rights activist referred to the constitutional provision that the welfare and security of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.
He said Nigerians must therefore demand an end to a policy that allows political office holders and civil servants who constitute less than one per cent of the population to continue to allocate 70 per cent of the nation’s resources to themselves.
Falana said: “If the Federal Government could withdraw US$12.4 billion from the foreign reserves to pay questionable external debts and subsidise the local bourgeoisie with intervention funds running to trillions of naira, it cannot turn round to complain of lack of fund to fix collapsed social infrastructures, education, health, transportation and agriculture and create jobs for our army of unemployed youths.
“The recovery of the stolen wealth of the nation from foreign and local thieves should be a collective battle while the fund recovered from corrupt public officers and their privies is spent on job creation and fixing of hospitals and schools as well as the provision of other social services.”
The senior lawyer believes that the programmes and manifestoes of the ruling party and the mainstream opposition parties cannot take Nigeria to the Promised Land.
Nigerians, he said, must take their destiny in their own hands by organising themselves to demand for the actualisation of the fundamental objectives and directive principles set out in Chapter two of the Constitution.
“The economy cannot be transformed in favour of Nigeria on the basis of the dangerous prescriptions of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.
“Nigerians should, therefore, be prepared to challenge the recycled neo-liberal managers of the economy who continue to insist on the dominance of market forces which have been discredited by the crisis of global capitalism.
“While religious leaders are entitled to prepare the country for heaven, they must team up with patriotic forces to organise, empower and mobilise our people through their unions, associations, collectives and religious groups to rebuild the country on the platform of social justice and equity. Otherwise, the unity of Nigeria will remain a mirage.” - The Nation

US-based Nigerian parents arrested after son dies during fasting
Kehinde Omosebi and Titilayo, his wife, have been arrested by the Reedsburg police department in Wisconsin, US, following the death of their 15-year old son.

Ayanfe, their teenage son, was found dead in the family house and another child, an 11-year old was hospitalised following what the father described as a week-long religious fast.
According to Wisconsin State Journal, the 49-year old father had voluntarily gone to the Reedsburg police station on Sunday to report his son’s death.
Timothy Becker, Reedsburg police chief, said Ayanfe was found dead when officers arrived at the family’s residence.

The 11-year-old boy found at the family residence along with 48-year old Titilayo, the mother of the deceased, was also found to be “extremely emaciated.”
Becker said the father told police he was a minister affiliated with Cornerstone Reformation Ministries.
He said the family had started a religious fast on July 19 and the teenage boy died on August 31, exactly 44 days later.

Sonny Hyde, pastor of the Cornerstone Ministry Baptist Church in Reedsburg, said the family was not affiliated with his church, and he has not heard of Cornerstone Reformation Ministries in the community.
The 11-year old boy and his mother were taken to a hospital in the community but the mother refused treatment, citing religious reasons, and was taken to the Sauk County Jail.

Police said the parents would be remanded in custody on “possible charges of neglecting a child causing death and neglecting a child causing great bodily harm,” until they appear in the Sauk County Circuit Court.
The 11-year-old is said to be in protective custody receiving care at the Children’s Hospital in Madison, the capital city of Wisconsin.
The Reedsburg police chief said the parents are now eating while jailed in Baraboo, a city in Sauk County, Wisconsin. - TheCable

UN calls emergency meeting over African swine fever as China confirms ninth case

The United Nations has called an emergency meeting of animal disease experts amid fears African swine fever (ASF) is set to sweep through Asia and devastate pig farming.
China on Wednesday confirmed its ninth case of the highly infectious disease since it was first spotted in the country a month ago and neighbouring nations are now braced for its spread.
Around 38,000 animals have been culled in the world's largest pork producer as health officials try to halts the spread of a viral haemorrhagic fever which is often fatal to pigs.
The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) has already warned the disease may spread to other countries. The disease is not harmful to humans, but there is no known vaccine for pigs and the main preventative measure is culling.
"It's critical that this region be ready for the very real possibility that ASF could jump the border into other countries," the FAO's Wantanee Kalpravidh said.
"That's why this emergency meeting has been convened – to assess where we are now and to determine how we can work together in a co-ordinated, regional response."
Epidemiologists and animal health experts from China's neighbours are taking part in the meeting in Bangkok.
China's most recent case was announced in northeastern Heilongjiang province, with 12 pigs dead and another 39 infected.
The China outbreak is the first time the disease has been detected in east Asia.
Spread by ticks, direct contact between pigs, contaminated food and animal feed, it is devastating to herds.
Pork products could be responsible for the spread rather than live animals, the FAO has said.
The first case in China was spotted in only early August, but herds have already been affected hundreds of miles apart. - The Telegraph

She arouses me, spirit told me to make love to her – Rape suspect

A 35-year-old man, Timothy Dogo has confessed to raping a 14-year-old girl in Tufa community, Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State.
Dogo, in his confessional statement, reportedly said he had carnal knowledge of more than four under-aged girls in the area before the police in Niger State arrested him.
He said he raped the victim because her presence aroused him.
Dogo said, “There was nothing to show that she is a teenager, she looks like a 20-year-old girl, I never knew that she is under-age; otherwise I wouldn’t have tried it in the first place.
“I raped her because her looks turn me on each time I set my eyes on her; there was this spirit that would tell me to make love to her and that was why on that fateful day, I dragged her into an uncompleted building to commit the act,”he told Punch.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Muhammad Abubakar, who confirmed the incident, said the suspect was apprehended by operatives attached to Gurara division.

Abubakar said Dogo would soon be arraigned in court. - Daily Post

Amazon becomes second trillion dollar US company

Amazon becomes second trillion dollar US company
Amazon has become the second publicly quoted company in the US to exceed the $1 trillion mark.
The e-commerce company owned by Jeff Bezos, the world’s richest man, achieved the feat one month after iPhone manufacturer, Apple, hit the milestone.
Amazon shares hit $2,050.49 around noon on Tuesday, bringing the company’s value above $1 trillion.
The company’s share price has remained bullish, surging as high as 75 percent and adding more than $435 billion to its market capitalisation from around $600 billion in January.
In the second quarter of 2018 (Q2 2018), Amazon’s net income rose to $2.5 billion, compared to $197 million in Q2 2017.
Amazon’s profit margin increased following years of investing in retail businesses, even as advertising across its sites and prime membership subscription yielded fruits.
It also put its money in developing new technologies, including the successful Amazon Web Services, the company’s cloud business.
Analysts expect Amazon to overtake Apple as the largest US company, similarly to when Alphabet, owners of Google, briefly surpassed the iPhone maker in 2016. - TheCable

How to defeat mighty men

How to defeat mighty men
Some people pride themselves as powerful and mighty, capable of oppressing others physically and spiritually.
Many of them, demonic in nature, are the agents of  Satan. But according to Enoch Adeboye, general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, these people, who claim to be mighty, can be defeated because they are vulnerable.
Preaching at the first post-convention thanksgiving service on Sunday which was livestreamed to all parishes of the church, Adeboye titled his message,  ‘Dominion over the mighty’.
The theme of the hugely successful 66th Annual Convention of the church, which attracted millions of people from around the world, was “Dominion.”
Reading from Psalm 91 on Sunday, Pastor Adeboye said no matter how mighty people claim to be, they are limited in various ways; and the only one who has no limitations is the Almighty God.
He drew comparisons between the mighty and the Almighty:
  • The mighty man is physically limited because, like in the case of King Saul, he can get weary and sleep even during war. While Saul hunted David in the wilderness, he got tired and slept – all his bodyguards joining him for the much-needed nap.
  • But as Psalm 91 shows the Almighty never slumbers nor sleeps. Even when Jesus slept during his earthly ministry, it was for the Almighty to appreciate the nature of man.
  • Mighty men, like Naaman, do fall sick but the Almighty, who is also the Great Physician, never falls sick, and He lives forever.
  • Mighty men can be limited by resources and some do go bankrupt but the Almighty, who is more than sufficient, promises that if anything is asked in His name, He would provide it. Even if it is something not immediately available He could create it.
Lacing the sermon with prophecies which drew thunderous responses, Adeboye pointed out that for one to have dominion over mighty men or evil forces; one has to connect to the Almighty.
“It is by association with God Almighty who has dominion over mighty men and all evil forces such as demons, witches and wizards,” he stressed.
One of his popular testimonies on the subject, which he didn’t share on Sunday perhaps because of time constraint, brings home the point clearly.
Demons vs Jesus’ name
“There was this young man who went for a programme somewhere; I don’t know the kind of a programme it was because he came back home heavily loaded with demons. So heavily loaded was he that he couldn’t do anything other than just lie down. He couldn’t stand or walk.
“He was brought to the church at the headquarters in Ebute-Metta and I began to pray for him.
“I command you to kneel down for prayers,” I said.
He said, “I can’t kneel down.”
I said, “I command you!”
“Do you know what he said?” he answered, “In whose name?”
I said, “In the name of Jesus.”
“Oh,” he said, “that is different,” and knelt down.
When I had finished praying for him, I said, “Now stand up and go home.”
He said, “I can’t stand.”
I said, “I command you to stand.”
He asked again, “In whose name?”
I said, “In the name of Jesus.”
“That, again, is different,” he said, and got up.
I said to him, “Go home now, have a bath and be normal again.”
He said, “In whose name?”
I said, “In the name of Jesus.”
Pastor Adeboye stressed that people in association with God should be able to forbid evil and scare evil spirits away.
“If you are a true child of God, witches should be running away from you,” he said. “The moment you are connected to God, you have dominion.”
He shared the testimony of his colleague at the University of Lagos whose promotion was stalled for 12 years by mighty men:
Divine promotion
“When I was a lecturer, there was a colleague who had not been promoted for 12 years because somebody hid his file so that it never went out for assessment.
“Then there was a coup in Nigeria, just around the time when this brother became born again. When the Almighty God wants to solve your problem, He can use any situation. And I have always said whatever God has to do to make sure your miracle will get to you, He will do it. Amen!
“Now, many of the lecturers will remember that the coup did not only sweep away the government, it swept away many professors. Many Heads of Department had to go.  “A new HOD was appointed and he decided he must know his staff members. So he said they should bring all their files. They saw everybody’s file except this man’s because his file had been hidden. But the new HOD vowed not to rest until his file was found.
“Finally, when they found it, he was shocked! He said, “No recommendation for more than 12 years. I mean whether the recommendation was turned down or not, nothing has been written?”
“So, he met one or two top people and they said the only way we can compensate this man is to give him double promotion.
“Think of the good in your life that the enemy may have put in the cooler. Your promotion, your success, your fruitfulness, your progress, your prosperity shall come out of the cooler in Jesus name. Amen!
“As it is usual during his sermons he made an altar call and closed with a prayer of blessings.”
Pastor Adeboye preached from the headquarters parish of the church at Ebutte Metta, Lagos. - TheCable
