Mesut Ozil followed 'heart' when signing new Arsenal deal

ozil-cropped: Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil

Ozil says he followed his heart when pledging the next three-and-a-half years of his career to Arsenal by signing a new contract.

The Germany international had long been linked with a move away from north London, speculation going into overdrive after he entered the final year of his previous deal in July 2017.
Manchester United and Barcelona had been touted as potential destinations for Ozil, and reports of a reunion with Jose Mourinho - his coach at Real Madrid - increased around the turn of the year.
But the 29-year-old committed his future to the Gunners on Thursday, agreeing terms which are understood to tie him to the club until the end of the 2020-21 season.
Although media rumours often left Arsenal supporters fearing Ozil would follow a similar path to Alexis Sanchez, the former Werder Bremen player said he needed to give himself as much time as possible to think things over.
In a post on his official Instagram account, Ozil wrote: "Proud to announce: I signed dat thing.
"Three more years with @Arsenal! It's been one of the most important decisions of my footballing career and that's why I had to think hard and talk with everyone who's important to me...
"Good things take time! In the end I let my heart decide. As I always said, I feel at home here and I'm highly motivated to achieve big things in the next few years. Once a Gunner, always a Gunner!"
Confirmation of Ozil's extension completes a positive few days for Arsenal off the field, the club having also signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund for a club-record fee on Wednesday. - Goal

Nigeria drops five places on KPMG’s ‘growth promise ranking’

Nigeria drops five places on KPMG’s ‘growth promise ranking’

The report, which is titled Growth Promise 2018, ranked countries based on macroeconomic stability, institutional strength, openness and human capital.

Nigeria ranked 158 of the 181 countries. Mauritius, Botswana and Rwanda were the highest ranked African countries in the report.
Nigeria got a score of 7.45 on macroeconomic stability, which considers government debt and government stability.
This was the third highest score obtained by an African country on the chart.

The federal government has been using a number of debt instruments to raise funds for the deficit of the 2017 budget. These include the FGN Savings bond, Sukuk and treasury bills.
Data released by the Debt Management Office in 2017 showed that the country’s debt profile has increased to N20 trillion as of September 30 of that year.

The 2018 budget, which is yet to be passed by the national assembly, has a projected deficit of N2.005 trillion.

Mobile operators blame fibre cuts, fake phones for poor service

Mobile operators blame fibre cuts, fake phones for poor service
The rising spate of fibre cuts have fuelled agitations in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, with operators complaining about its negative impact on quality of service (QOS).
According to mobile operators, QoS has deteriorated in recent weeks, limiting data usage and connectivity.
This has led to an upsurge in “dropped calls” and increased incidents of “silent calls,” a situation where a caller cannot hear the voice at the other end.
Speaking with TheCable, Olusola Teniola, president, Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), said there are certain multifaceted challenges in the industry that give rise to poor service.
According to him fibre cuts, destruction of telecoms equipment, reduced investment in the sector due to economic recession and proliferation of fake phones are some of the major causes of poor service experienced by network users.
“The last time we spoke on this issue, this was last year, ATCON actually raised to the attention of the regulator that there are about 10 percent of fake phones in the market of possibly 140 million mobile phones,” he said.
“This means 14 million mobile devices are really fake phones and we’ve cried out to Nigerian Telecommunications Commission (NCC) with solutions that ensure that the reduction in the importation of these phones should actually occur.
“Secondly there should be a system activated within the networks to deal with the checking of the international Manufacturers Equipment Identification (IMEI) so that there can be… a whitelist and a black list.”
The whitelist lists those brands that have been approved and the blacklist will include a list of those fake brands that are prevalent on the market.
“Not only do these fake phones cause power issues when they communicate with the base stations, they actually are a source of harm to users and pose a health risk,” Teniola said.
“Generally, over the last 24 to 36 months, definitely during the recession, there has been no significant or any tangible investment in the upgrade of capacity on the networks.
“As you know, our networks are being used for mobile money, for e-commerce, for making calls, for carrying over the top (OTT) applications and services, over and beyond voice.
“So, we have a huge number of consumers now using voice or making voice calls using this application.
“They put further pressure on the data services… so we need a larger number of 3G and 4G base stations.
“So, the funding is an issue, lack of optic fibre and its ubiquitousness is also another issue that contributes to poor data service.
“Finally there’s a technical issue and the issue is to deal with propagation of signals, and we need a lot more base stations to be able to resolve the black spots that exist in networks. “
Expressing frustration on network limitations, Emeka Oparah, director of corporate communications and CSR, Airtel Nigeria, said the situation had become worse in recent times.
He said Airtel had taken actions to “build significant redundancies to take care of the fibre cuts”.
Oparah added that the company and its network management partners have bolstered surveillance and monitoring of the fibre optic infrastructure.
According to him, massive road construction projects currently being executed across the country account for the fibre cuts.
He said: “As we approach another election cycle, politicians are trying to prove they are fulfilling their promises to the electorate and so road construction, which happens to bring the highest visibility is on the increase.
“Unfortunately, unlike water pipes, which leak water when they are cut, the fibre optic cables may not be seen immediately but results in the deterioration of quality.”
“The other issue is that given that Nigeria basically runs on a mobile network, what affects one operator affects the others.
“For example, customers of a particular network will immediately switch to another network as soon as they are impacted by these cuts in a multi-siming environment like ours.” - Cable Nigeria

Ambode noted that corruption constituted a major challenge to sustainable development of the country and has adversely affected the integrity, image and business confidence of prospective investors.
He said it is proper to classify Lagos, over 20 million population, as one of the most populous  cities of the world ” and indeed the economic and financial capital of Nigeria and by extension of West Africa.
“This naturally makes it the most susceptible to perpetrators of these crimes”.
He said this was why the courts are being designated special courts to focus primarily on effective prosecution of these cases.
He however pointed out that the goal to make Lagos State a safe place to live, visit and do business can further be achieved if these specialized courts operate as conceptualized “, he said.
He said: ” these courts are an indication of our commitment at making Lagos uncomfortable for perpetrators of such offences and our judiciary, that has always led the vanguard at combating crimes in its own way, is resolved to discouraged same.
Lagos state Chief Judge, Justice Opeyemi Oke in a welcome address, disclosed that four courts have been set aside as special courts and that as at date, there are over 500 cases of financial crimes and 600 sexual offences pending before the high courts in the state.
She said the courts were set up following a directive from the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, to all heads of courts to dedicate some courts to determine corruption and economic crime cases.

''We believe strongly that the special courts shall fast track the trial of these types of cases and encouraged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other relevant bodies like ICPC to expedite the investigation and prosecution of such cases”, she said.
Justice Oke described sexual harassment and violence as serious threats and grave danger to women and children all over the world and a crime that has become an epidemic.
She explained that the inauguration of the Special Offences and Sexual Offences courts was aimed at enlightening and informing the public of the special attention the federal and state courts are prepared to invest in the elimination of the heinous crimes against humanity.
Wife of the Vice President, Mrs Oludolapo Osinbajo described as frightening of corruption and sexual offences cases in court.
“The statistics quoted by the Chief Justice of Lagos is very frightening; it only speaks of half of the true picture.
“Behind the figures are the faces of the affected women and girls as well as the men and boys.” Osinbajo said.
Giving examples of real life scenarios of sexual violence,  Osinbajo said that victims of such offences should never be ignored.

“We should not ignore the trauma and nightmare that sexual offences bring, let us not forget the girls not only in Nigeria but all over the world,” she said. - The Nation

Nigeria is running a ‘bastardised’ federal structure - Oyegun

Oyegun says Nigeria is running a ‘bastardised’ federal structure
John Oyegun, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says the country is running a bastardised federal structure.

Oyegun said this on Wednesday at a public presentation of the party’s report on true federalism.

The chairman said the country’s federal structure is more like a unitary system of government.
“This is going to be the beginning of a historic event for this nation. It is historic because we have not been at this point before,” Oyegun said.
“We have held series of conferences before on how to restructure this country and each time, we always end up with nothing
“Today, we have moved from showpiece of these conferences to the beginning of a new Nigeria. Today, we are going to be partners to the construction of the basic fundamental foundation of where this country truly belongs.

“There is no doubt at all that where we were and where we are today is basically a bastardized kind of federal structure, more like a unitary system. What we are going to present to the nation today are the considered views of the critical mass of this nation who participated strongly in the results that is being presented today.

“When the issue of restructuring cropped into the public domain last year, the main reason being one more issue with which to trash the Buhari administration. At that point, it was clear that this nation was facing a major issue that needed to be straightened out and we need to find a new reality.

“For president Buhari, the reality was the economic well-being of this nation based in the strength of our people and what we can produce and based on the productivity of Nigerians themselves.” - Cable Nigeria

Face of corruption !!! Fani-Kayode to court: I’ve heart-related ailment

Femi Fani-Kayode

The Federal High Court in Lagos yesterday heard that former former Minister of Aviation Chief Femi Fani-Kayode has a heart-related ailment.
His lawyer Mr Norrison Quakers (SAN) told Justice Rilwan Aikawa that the former minister complained about “heart-related pain” and could not make it to court for his trial.
His absence stalled his trial for alleged money laundering.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) re-arraigned Fani-Kayode and former Finance Minister (State) Senator Nenadi Usman for alleged N4.6billion laundering and fraud.
They were arraigned along with a former National Chairman of the Association of Local Governments in Nigeria (ALGON), Yusuf Danjuma, and a company, Jointrust Dimensions Ltd.
When the case was called, only Usman and Danjuma stepped into the dock.
Before lawyers announced their appearances, Justice Rilwan asked why Fani-Kayode was not present.
Quakers spoke up, saying: “I was going to inform My Lord that the second defendant is indisposed. I got a call from his wife who said he was complaining of heart-related pain.”
Quakers said he expected to get a medical report on his client’s health condition before the close of work.
According to him, the issue of health could not be taken lightly considering several cases of sudden deaths, including that of a lawyer who collapsed and died in a courtroom while addressing a judge.
Quakers asked that the dates reserved for trial (yesterday and today) be vacated.
He said: “The second defendant is unavoidably absent as a result of health challenge, which information was related to me by the wife. I’ve requested for a medical report.
“If I get the report, I’ll furnish the court with it. I apply that tomorrow’s (today’s) date be vacated so that we can have another date for continuation of trial.”
EFCC’s lawyer Rotimi Oyedepo did not oppose the application.
The defendants were accused of indirectly retaining N1.billion, N300million, N400million and N800million, all proceeds of corruption, according to EFCC.
The prosecution said they allegedly committed the offence between January 8 and March 25, 2015 ahead of the general election.
Fani-Kayode was also accused of doing cash transaction of N24million with Olubode Oke without going through a financial institution.
The offence, EFCC said, violates sections 1(a) and 16(d) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012 and punishable under Section 16(2)(b).
The defendants pleaded not guilty.
Justice Aikawa adjourned till February 28, March 1 and 2 for continuation of trial. - The Nation

The injured woman being rescued... yesterday

A three-year-old boy and three others were killed yesterday when a containerised trailer lost its truckhead on Kara Bridge  on the Lagos-Ibadan Express way.
The truckhead plunged into the nearby river, while the container fell on a motorcycle on which the boy and her mother were riding. The woman and the motorcyclist are lying critically ill in hospital.
The remaining part of the truck crashed into the road median, causing traffic gridlock for hours. The traffic stretched from Kara to Ogudu on the Third Mainland Bridge.

Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) General Manager Adeshina Tiamiyu said investigation showed that the truck head  detached from its body while on motion and rammed into the motorcycle.
He said: “The head of the truck plunged into Isheri Olofin River. Unfortunately, a three-year-old boy on the motorcycle lost his life while his mother had leg fracture and they have been moved to the hospital by  Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials.
“The head of the truck that plunged into the river was recovered  with the aid of a crane with support from the local divers. Three adult male were extricated and recovered from the truck head and handed over to FRSC officials who moved them down to the morgue.”
Tiamiyu said among the responders were the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Lagos State Fire Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), police  and OP Mesa.
He advised motorists, especially articulated truck drivers, to  drive within the speed limit and ensure  adherence with road safety regulations.
Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) public relations officer Babatunde Akinbiyi said the bodies had been deposited at the  Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) morgue in Sagamu.
He said: “A container-laden Mark Truck marked NND 133 XA, had a brake failure and rammed into a Bajaj commercial motorcycle with number plate  EKY 221 QA, with the head of the truck plunging into the  river, while the container it was carrying fell on a woman and the child on the motorcycle.

Face of fraudster !!! N15 bn Fraud: “You Have Case to Answer” – Court Tells Bafarawa

Justice Bello Abbas of the Sokoto State High Court, sitting in Sokoto on Wednesday, January 31, 2018, dismissed an application by a former governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, seeking to quash N15billion fraud charge preferred against him and six others by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
The judge held that the former governor and his co-accused have a case to answer.
Bafarawa is standing trial alongside Beedash Nigeria Limited, 2nd defendant; while Bashir Mamman Nasarawa and his company Multi Trade Global Concept Limited are 3rd and 4th defendants respectively.
Nasdabap Nigeria Limited, Alhaji Nasiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, and Alhaji Salihu Maibuhu Gummi are also joined in the suit as 5th, 6th, and 7th defendants respectively.
They are being prosecuted on an amended 34-count charge of cheating, criminal breach of trust, and diversion of public funds to the tune of over N15billion.
The money was allegedly misappropriated when Bafarawa held sway as the governor of the state between 1999 and 2007.
Upon arraignment in December 2009, Bafarawa and his co-accused pleaded not guilty to the 47 counts preferred against them.
Soon after the arraignment, the accused persons filed a motion asking the court to among other things strike out the charge against them, which was dismissed by both the trial court and Court of Appeal, Sokoto Division.
The pardon recently granted to some of the accused persons by the Sokoto State governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, was responsible for the further amendment of the charge by the prosecution to the 34 counts.
In the course of the trial, the prosecution called nine witnesses and tender over 100 exhibits to prove the case against the accused persons.
On December 4, 2017, the accused persons approached the court again with an application of a “no case submission” following which the matter was adjourned to today for ruling after all arguments were taken.
In his ruling, Justice Abbas held that the prosecution had established a prima facie case to warrant explanations by the defendants as to whether they are culpable or not.
“The element required in a no-case submission is to establish a prima facie case and not elements for conviction. Having stated that position of the law, I wish to also observe that, given the nature of the entire case, and considering the documentary evidence before me, the accused persons definitely have some explanations to make, and this can only be done if they enter their defense”, the judge held.
The judge, however, upheld the no-case submission entered on behalf of the 3rd and 4th accused persons (Bashir Mamman Nasarawa and his company Multi Trade Global Concept Limited), and subsequently discharged and acquitted them.
The case has been adjourned to March 15 and 16, 2018 for the accused persons to open their defense.
