Van Dijk Snubs Manchester City for Liverpool

For the past few weeks, Manchester City was pursuing 25-year-old Virgil Van Dijk. They were in an advanced position in terms of his transfer.

The Reds have been locked for several weeks in a battle with Manchester City and Chelsea over the Southampton defender, who has become one of the Premier League’s most sought-after players. But this week Van Dijk declares that Anfield is his preferred destination. The initial fee for Virgil van Dijk expected to be around £50m with potential add-ons of another £10m. He will be offered the as Manchester City’s contract offer of the £200K-per week. The 6 ft 4 inches tall Centre Back will be a boost for the Liverpool and a great addition to the defense alongside Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip.

After a trophyless season, Manchester City is aiming for its rejuvenation for the next season. Guardiola already brought Portugal’s midfield sensation Bernardo Silva from Monaco and another Monaco fullback Benjamin Mendy deal is almost done. Transfer of Virgil Van Dijk might be the final piece of the puzzle. But recent snub from Van Dijk might be a huge blow for Pep Guardiola to fulfill his targets.

Former Celtic man Virgil Van Dijk joined The Saints in 2015 for a reported £13 million transfer fee. He made 55 appearances for Southampton and kept 17 clean sheets. He also scored 4 goals for Southampton. Van Dijk has won more tackles & aerial duels combined (327) than any other centre-backs since joining the Premier League.

Van Dijk got his first call up in the Netherland National team in the qualifier match against Kazakhstan in 2015. Since then he made 12 appearances and now he is an indispensable part of his national team.

Van Dijk left Groningen for Celtic in 2013 for a fee of £11.5M. There he won 2 Scottish Premier League titles, made 111 appearances for the club scoring 15 goals for them. He was also named as PFA Scotland Player of the Year in both of his seasons.

Rejecting a proven coach like Pep Guardiola for Jurgen Klopp‘s project in Liverpool. Sounds like a very bold move? Let’s see if Virgil Van Dijk can provide a fruitful season for Liverpool next season.
