Hitches: JAMB to reschedule exams for candidates

The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, has said that candidates who experienced technical issues while sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination would be rescheduled to resit the examination.
He said candidates to resit the exams include those who were logged out by the systems and could not answer the questions.
Oloyede, who blamed the hitches experienced in some centres on faulty cables, said that the resit examination would not clash with the National Examination Council examination scheduled to start on Monday.
The registrar said this on Thursday during a visit to the headquarters of Punch Nigeria Limited in Magboro, Ogun State, in company with top officials of JAMB.
He said, “When they talk about network problem, what they mean is cable. When they had problem in Dutse, I sent somebody there and we spent only N8,000 on cables. It does not cost money. It is because they put it on the floor and people will step and damage them. And on the day of the examination, that what was accounted for the hitches and questions not being found.
“The challenge is not from JAMB. It is because cable is failing between the candidate and our server in their offices. Our officers went to the centres with our servers. You don’t need connectivity all through the exam. With the technology we are using, you only need six minutes to download and upload the questions. Nobody should suffer it even if there was network failure.
“What I have seen today in Lagos is that we have a serious problem. I will still put it to the board but, next year, we may appoint one centre in each geopolitical zone to license the CBT centres and we will tell them go and take over the centres for three months and give me the figure that is available. Take N200 out of their N500 but take over the centre for three months.’’
Oloyede, who noted that some candidates who registered late in Lagos and Ogun states were posted to other states as a result of limited spaces, denied that JAMB posted the candidates to where they did not choose.
“No single person was posted out of where he or she had chosen. We have 65 centres in Lagos and we are to conduct examination within seven days.
After 300,000 candidates had registered in Lagos, anybody who registered thereafter deserved to choose a centre where it was available. There is nothing I can do to expand the space. What I can say is that it won’t happen next year. Next year, I may not listen to NECO and WAEC. I will just fix my 20 days instead of seven days. I did not want to extend beyond May 20 because I had given my word. The CBT centres want us to extend beyond May 20, because it means more money for them,’’ he said.
The former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin noted that JAMB might empower Nigerians next year by involving them in pin vending during registration for the examination.
“We paid N600m to banks in commission this year. What is N600million to banks? You can empower 100,000 Nigerians if you can get them to buy into it,’’ he said.

JAMB Candidate arrested after he was caught with a gun

Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) has arrested a 21-year-old JAMB candidate for being in possession of a gun at one of the centres at the ongoing JAMB UTME in Nasarrawa State.

Mr Bashir Lawal-Kano, the state commandant of the NSCDC, told newsmen in Lafia on Thursday that the suspect was arrested at the Nasarawa State Polytechnic centre during a search at the entrance to the hall.

Lawal-Kano said that the suspect was arrested on Tuesday after he was found to be in possession of a locally-made pistol and two rounds of live ammunition.
He said upon interrogation, the suspect confessed that someone gave him the gun for safe keeping.

He said that the suspect would be charged to court for illegal possession of firearms, adding that even registered guns were not allowed at examination centres.

Lawal-Kano also said the command had arrested one Mohammed Alakayi from Doma Local Government Area of the state for allegedly posing as a recruitment agent for the NSCDC.

According to him, the command has received several complaints from the public over alleged cases of fake recruitment.
“We have had reports of some criminal elements posing as our recruitment agents and following our intelligence, we arrested the suspect with full uniform of NSCDC and forged recruitment forms,” he said.
He said that five witnesses had testified that the suspect collected between N 4,000 and N15,000 each from them under the pretext that he was going to get them job with the command. “We are therefore charging him to court for impersonation and fraud as soon as investigation is completed, ” Lawal-Kano said.

He, however, appealed to job seekers, especially those desiring to join the NSCDC, to be watchful and disregard any information concerning recruitment coming from any other source apart from the command or its headquarters. - NAN

How Pharmacist allegedly kidnapped his boss for 1million Euros

The story of Pharm. Emeka Egbulugha, the Superintendent Pharmacist, of Maydon Pharmaceuticals aptly played out the famous biblical account of how Judas Iscariot, a disciple of Jesus Christ betrayed his master to the enemies for thirty pieces of silver.

When the news of the kidnap of Mr. Donatus Dunu, managing director of Maydon Pharmaceuticals broke on February 14, 2017, no one initially had clues to his whereabouts, not even his family members, until the abductors contacted them, and demanded a ransom of one million Euro (N500 million) for his release.

As the days were turning into weeks and weeks became months with the kidnappers not ready to let go of their victim, the relatives of Dunu, made part payment of the ransom, amounting to about N150 million according to reports, upon which they failed to release him.

Little did anyone know that Egbulugha, a native of Oguta, in Imo State, who was in the employ of Dunu, until his arrest by the police could be allegedly involved in such criminal act, as the victim narrated his ordeal in the hands of the terrible kidnap gang and how he had heard the voice of his employee, at different times discussing with his abductors while in their net.

According to the police source, “the victim said that a few days after he was abducted, he overheard the voice of pharmacist Emeka, who has been under his employ for long, discussing with his abductors in an adjoining room. He said he heard him asking members of the gang keeping watch over him whether they had contacted members of his family”.

“A few days before his escape, the victim said Emeka came and reassured them that he had signed all the documents for the release of goods worth about N7 million from his warehouse and also came the next Thursday to boldly question why they had not killed him as agreed.“He reportedly left after he was assured that they would carry out the killing by the following day, Friday”.  At this stage, the victim said he gave up hope of freedom.

“However, by early hours of Friday, he was able to unchain himself while his captors were deeply asleep with their guns and escaped through the back door, landing at the next compound, where a security guard jumped at him and branded him a thief.  He said that after narrating his story to the guard, he told him to wait but he did not see him again after waiting for a long time.”

Although he almost ran out of luck by falling into the hands of passersby who misconstrued him for a thief, but after some explanations, they assisted him to the Igando police station.

When Pharmanewsonline.com pulled a call through to Mrs Lilian Dunu, the wife of the victim, she acknowledged that Egbulugha had worked for some years with the company, but that he seldom attended the morning prayers made for her husband’s release all through the time he was in kidnappers’ den, as the pharmacist often resume late to work.

Mrs Dunu, who admitted that the family paid a huge ransom to the abductors, said she wasn’t sure of the exact amount paid, but that it was not in naira.

She was however indeed grateful to God for the double blessings she has just experienced- her husband’s miraculous escape and the discharge of her son who had been hospitalised for about a week over an illness.

The visit of Pharmanewsonline.com to the pharmaceutical company at Ilupeju, Surulere, Lagos, yielded further revelations into the story, as some senior colleagues of Egbulugha opened up on how he has been unnecessarily generous to some ladies in the company.

His colleagues who spoke to us in confidence, said they had been doubting his sources of income for a while, as he was fond of doling out money to every Dick, Tom, and Harry, who cares to ask him for lunch, whereas they could not afford such charitable gestures, even with their salaries higher than his.

Since pharmacists are known to be men of honour, it was imperative for us to investigate the authenticity of Emeka’s claim of being a pharmacist. When the Registrar of the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) Pharm. Elijah Mohammed was contacted for the verification of Emeka as a pharmacist, his answer was in the affirmative, but was disappointed at his alleged involvement in the present case of his boss.

“It is unfortunate he is allegedly involved in such act, but before now, we have never had any negative report about him”, he remarked

Lagos goes tough on street beggars

Following the rejigging of its recent approach to curtail the activities of street begging and destitute citizens, the Lagos State government has said it is confident of eradicating the social menace from the state as there are responsive measures in place to achieve the feat.
Giving the state’s vote of confidence, Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Pharm. (Mrs.) Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, said with the monthly report of destitute and beggars collected in the state as compared to previous years, statistics reveal that the state has made tremendous progress.
“Consider where we were and where we are as the statistics have shown, it is evident that we are making progress. With this we are confident that in no time, as we continue our relentless efforts, the menace of street begging and destitute will be completely eradicated from our state.”
She appealed to members of the public to cooperate with the state government by giving alms to the less privileged in the society through registered charity homes and other social responsible organizations to curtail and totally eradicate the social menace.
The monthly report shows that 124 male and female destitute and street beggars in total were taken off the street last month. The breakdown is 30 destitute, 36 mentally challenged, 20 adult beggars, 28 child beggars and 10 child destitute. Already, some have been prosecuted and convicted for various offences committed as provided by section 168(1)(b) of the criminal law of Lagos State 2011 (as amended).
Akinbile-Yussuf said government will continue its rescue operations on perpetrators of the social menace, noting that beyond prosecution, the government has provided rehabilitation and training centres where those rescued will be engaged in mental re-orientation and vocational exercise to help them become self-reliant and deliver the state from the menace.

Buhari hates Igbos, Tinubu crying over treatment of Osinbajo, Yorubas – Fani-Kayode

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, says national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and other top Youruba leaders in the party are crying over the treatment being meted out to Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo and the southwest region in general by the “cabal”.
He also lambasted Igbos who joined the APC, saying Buhari hated and had nothing to offer them.
In a statement Thursday night, Fani-Kayode said “it is only now that the Yoruba wing of the APC are really getting to know him and his evil cabal and they are all crying behind closed doors. They regret supporting them during the 2015 election deeply.
“Any Igbo person in the APC needs to have his or her head examined. Such a person is a confused soul who has been conned and who has sold his soul to an Igbo hater, a radical islamist, an ethnic supremacist, a religious bigot and a racist.
“You say he chose an Igbo man as his running mate in the past and my answer is so what? He did so because he was looking for votes and not because he loves them.
“Next you will say he has Igbo Ministers in his cabinet forgetting that the constitution compels him to give each state in the country, including the Igbo ones, at least one Minister.
“He has not done the Igbo any favour by giving them Ministers or making their sons his running mate twice because that is their due. They are entitled to it and their votes and support was badly needed.
“He did the same for the Tinubu group in the SW in 2015 but now that he is ill and out of action look at what his group are doing to Osinbajo, Tinubu, Baba Akande. Look at the humiliation they are subjecting the Yoruba wing of the APC and the VP to.
“We warned Tinubu and co. that this would happen but they would not listen. They were misled and they gave 51 per cent of the Yoruba vote to Buhari in the 2015 election whilst we gave 49 per cent of that vote to Jonathan. Now they are crying.
“You say that Buhari loves the Igbo yet his security forces and military have killed and locked up more Igbo leaders and youths and marginalised more Igbos at the Federal level more than ANY other Nigerian President or Head of State since the civil war.
“He loves Igbos so much that he has not arrested or prosecuted ANY of tge well-armed, well-funded and well-organised Fulani militants and herdsmen that have gone into Igbo land in the last two years and killed thousands of people, burnt their homes, raped their women and stolen their land.
“He loves the Igbo so much that out of the two key positions that have been given to southerners in the Presidents team in the Villa not ONE of them has gone to an Igbo despite the fact that the Igbos constitute such a large number of people in the south.
“All the numerous other key positions in the Villa are in the hands of northerners and only two key posts were given to southerners. Of the two none was given to the Igbo. Is that love for the south and particularly the Igbo or is it contempt and disdain?
“This sort of ethnic domination and northernisation of the Villa has NEVER happened before and it is shameful. I worked in the Villa for 3 years and I know how it works and how things are usually balanced between north and south and the six zones.
“But this is not the case under Buhari. For him only two key positions in the Villa, that of Femi Adesina who is Special Adviser on Media and who is from the South West and Ita Enang, who is Special Adviser on the National Assembly and who is from the South South, are the ONLY southerners in key positions in Buhari’s Presidency.
“No Igbo man is good enough for him to put in a key position in the Presidency and the popular refrain amongst his inner circle and his little cabal is that Igbos cannot be trusted. Everyone knows this. They dont like southerners generally and they despise the Igbo particularly.
“The Igbo that are in the APC that do not know all this and that cannot appreciate the shameful and primitive disposition of Buhari and his inner circle are simply ignorant or deluded or both.
“They are also hungry and desperate for the few crumbs they will get for betraying their oen people and selling them inti slavery and bondage. It is sad and pitiful and those that have done this should bow their heads in shame”.
