End SARS: Sanwo-Olu must say the truth, Buhari, a dictator with democratic face – DJ Switch

 

Obianuju Catherine Udeh, popularly known as DJ Switch, has described President Muhammadu Buhari government as “a dictatorship with a democratic face”.

DJ Switch was responsible for the Instagram Live, that beamed the shooting by the Nigerian Army at the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20, 2020.

In an interview with Becky Anderson on CNN on Wednesday, she said, “Nigeria is a dictatorship with a democratic face. I think that it is primarily to please the international community. It is our right to protest for the change that we demand.

“This government has used force from the beginning. They started with infiltrating a peaceful protest with things but that did not work. Then they moved to bring the military in.”

DJ Switch also asked the Governor of Lagos state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to speak the truth about what happened at the Lekki Toll Gate.

“They know the truth and they have conflicting stories with each other. Nigerians have died and this is not a time to play games. Families are looking for their loved ones. The governor owes a responsibility to the citizens of Lagos State to say the truth,” she added.

DJ Switch is believed to have fled the country amid threats to her life.

AMCON freezes Jimoh Ibrahim’s accounts, seizes assets over N69bn debt

 The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) says it has seized assets belonging to Jimoh Ibrahim, a Nigerian businessman, over a N69.4 billion debt.

Bank accounts belonging to Ibrahim and his companies, including Global Fleet Oil & Gas Limited and NICON Investment Limited, were also frozen, a statement released by AMCON on Wednesday said.

Assets taken over by Pinheiro Legal Partners, AMCON’s debt recovery agent, include the building of NICON Investment Limited at Plot 242, Muhammadu Buhari Way, Central Business District, Abuja; NICON Hotels Limited building at Plot 557, Port-Harcourt Crescent, off Gimbiya Street, Abuja and the building of NICON Lekki Limited also at No. 5, Customs Street, Lagos.

Others are the building of Abuja International Hotels Limited located at No. 3, Hospital Road, Lagos; another property at Plot 242, Muhammadu Buhari Way, Abuja; the former Allied Bank Building on Mile 2, Oshodi Express Way, Apapa Road, Lagos; Energy House located on No. 94, Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos; NICON Building at No. 40, Madeira Street, Maitama, Abuja; a Residential Apartment at Road 2, House A14, Victoria Garden City, Lagos; NICON Hotels Building at Plot 3, Road 3, Victoria Garden City, Lagos as well as the NICON Luxury Hotel’s Building, Garki I, FCT, Abuja.

R.M. Aikawa, a justice of the federal high court in Lagos, also granted AMCON possession of all shares belonging to Ibrahim and his two companies that are domiciled in Nigerian Re-Insurance Company Plc, NICON Insurance Company Plc, Nigeria Stockbrokers Limited (NSL) and NICON Trustees Limited.

Jude Nwauzor, AMCON’s spokesperson, confirmed that all the assets that are listed by the court have been successfully taken over with the help of court bailiffs and officers and men of the Nigerian police as mandated by the court.

Nwauzor explained that no incidents were recorded during the enforcement activities at all the locations.

“The matter between Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim and the corporation has been interminable since the loan was purchased by the government debt recovery agency during the first phase of eligible bank assets (EBA) purchases from Union Bank in the early days of AMCON,” the statement read.

“Since the purchase of the EBA from Union Bank, AMCON has offered the obligor incredible exit opportunities to no avail. And as is tradition, AMCON has for years explored all avenues to resolve the debt amicably, but Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim and his companies – Global Fleet Oil & Gas Limited and NICON Investment Limited, have remained recalcitrant and unenthusiastic to repay the huge debt, which has left AMCON with no other choice than to activate the full force of its amended Act, signed into law last year by President Muhammadu Buhari.”

Wike, soldiers will pay heavy price over death of IPOB members at Obigbo – Nnamdi Kanu

 

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has vowed that Governor Nyesom Wike will never be forgiven over the recent killing by security agents in Oyigbo Local Government Area of the state.

Kanu stated this while sharing an obituary poster of someone he alleged to be “One of the victims of Wike’s #obigbogenocide.”

He described the governor as a dead man walking, threatening that the entire Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital will bear the brunt of what happened in Oyigbo.

“Instead of us to forget what happened at Obigbo, let heaven and earth come to pass,” Kanu wrote on Facebook.

The perpetrators of this crime against humanity and their supporters…will be hunted down one after the other, them and their families.

“Igweocha [Port Harcourt] as a whole will pay a very heavy price for what Wike and Fulani soldiers did at Obigbo.

Trump pays $3m for vote recount in Wisconsin

 

U.S. President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign on Wednesday paid $3m for a partial recount of Wisconsin’s presidential election results.

The request was part of the long-shot attempt by the campaign to reverse President-elect Joe Biden’s victory.

While staying out of the public eye, the Republican Trump has persisted in venting his anger on Twitter, where he made claims of election fraud, some of which were unsupported by evidence and others demonstrably untrue.

Election officials in Wisconsin, as well as in Georgia, said recounts in those states were very unlikely to reverse Trump’s losses.

Biden, a Democrat, warned that the continued delay by Trump in recognizing him as winner could mean the United States will be “behind by weeks and months” in the preparations to distribute a coronavirus vaccine.

Trump’s unfounded claims about the election having been “rigged” are failing in courts.

However, opinion polls show they have a political benefit, with as many as half of Trump’s fellow Republicans believing them, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

The Wisconsin Elections Commission said it would oversee recounts in two heavily Democratic counties – Milwaukee and Dane, which includes Madison – after the Trump campaign paid the $3 million cost, less than the $7.9 million estimated cost of a statewide recount.

Dane County Clerk Scott McDonell said a recount would start on Friday and finish within days.

Only a few hundred votes changed in the county’s recount after the 2016 presidential election, he said.

“My guess would be that by focusing on Dane and Milwaukee the end result will be that Biden will have a slight increase in votes, but nothing terribly significant – certainly nothing anywhere near what would be required for changing the outcomes,” McDonell said.

In the state-by-state Electoral College that determines the election winner, Biden captured 306 votes to Trump’s 232. He won the popular vote by more than 5.8 million.

Biden won Wisconsin by more than 20,000 votes to lead Trump 49.5% to 48.8%.

To remain in office, Trump would need to overturn results in at least three large and closely competitive states to reach the threshold of 270 electoral votes. That would be unprecedented.

The president is clinging to hope that a manual recount ordered by Georgia can erase Biden’s 14,000-vote lead there and is also challenging results in the swing state of Michigan.

Gabriel Sterling, Georgia’s voting system implementation manager, told journalists that as of Wednesday morning, election officials conducting the recount had reviewed 4,968,000 ballots – nearly all of those cast – and found Biden’s lead over Trump had fallen to 12,781 ballots, down from 14,156 previously.

Sterling said there was no evidence that fraud could have changed the outcome in Georgia.

Trump on Wednesday falsely claimed that the number of votes counted in heavily Democratic Detroit, the largest city in Michigan, had surpassed the number of residents.

NCDC confirms 236 new COVID-19 cases — 142 in Lagos

 

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed 236 new coronavirus infections in 13 states and the federal capital territory (FCT).

The agency confirmed the new positive samples in its update for November 18, 2020.

The Wednesday figure is the highest in nine days — the country recorded 300 new samples on November 8, 2020.

According to the breakdown, Lagos alone accounted for more than half of the new cases with 142 infections, followed by Ogun with 19, and Kaduna with 15.

Lagos still holds the spot as the epicentre of coronavirus infections, as the state accounts for 1,305 patients out of Nigeria’s total of 3,073 active cases.

The state has also recorded the most infections with 22,704 cases so far, out of which 21,179 patients have been discharged.

Meanwhile, the country lost what would have been its zero death count for the fifth consecutive day, with one new fatality recorded on Wednesday.

But according to the NCDC, “a previously recorded death in Edo state was erroneously reported,” and as a result, Nigeria’s current fatality toll still stands at 1,163.

Before Wednesday, the last time NCDC recorded a new fatality was on November 13.

A total of 120 patients were discharged on Wednesday, increasing the total number of recoveries to 61,457.

So far, a total of 65,693 cases have been confirmed across Nigeria. - THECABLE

 

Messi ‘tired’ of being blamed for Barcelona’s problems

 

Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi, has said he is fed up with being blamed for the club’s problems.

This comes after Antoine Griezmann’s former agent, Eric Ohlat, accused him of running a “regime of terror” at the club.

Messi was met by a group of journalists at El Prat airport on Wednesday upon his return from international duty with Argentina.

The 33-year-old was asked what he thought about Olhats’ claim that he had too much control at the Camp Nou.

“I am tired of always being the problem with everything that goes on at this club,” Messi replied.

Griezmann has always insisted that his relationship with Messi is good.

But Messi’s latest remarks will only increase speculation that he could leave the LaLiga giants when his contract ends next summer.

35-year-old poly lecturer murdered in Ogun

 

Mufutau Waliu, the Head of Department of Electrical and Electronics at the D.S Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, Ogun State, has been killed by gunmen, suspected to be hired assassins.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt that Waliu was waylaid by the gunmen, while on his way out of the institution on Tuesday as they shot him severally at point-blank range.

The 35-year-old lecturer was later rushed to the State Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta, where he was confirmed dead.

The Head, Public Relations Unit of the institution, Yinka Adegbite, confirmed the incident to newsmen, saying that the police had taken over the investigation.

“The deceased closed from work on Tuesday, as he was coming out from the campus; the report we heard was that he was waylaid by some gunmen. They shot him several times.

“The institution’s management, with the cooperation of the police, immediately took him to the State Hospital, Ijaye. On getting there, he was pronounced dead.

“Of course we are yet to ascertain what happened. We have left the police to do their job. They will do their investigation normally and come out with their findings later,” Adegbite stated.

The spokesman for the Ogun State Police Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, described the incident as a case of assassination, saying that the command had begun hunting for the killers.

“The CP has ordered an investigation by Homicide section. We are working assiduously to ensure that the killers are brought to book,” Oyeyemi said.
