United open talks with Barcelona over £30m Gomes deal

FC Barcelona v Sampdoria: Joan Gamper Trophy

Manchester United have opened negotiations with Barcelona over the potential signing of midfielder Andre Gomes, who has been valued at £30m by the Spanish giants, according to a report on the Metro.

The Premier League club were heavily interested in luring Gomes to the Premier League last summer before he made the move to the Nou Camp from fellow La Liga club Valencia.

The Catalan club paid about £30m for Gomes last summer after he shone in the European Championships with Portugal. However, the midfielder has failed to make a lasting impact and Barcelona are looking to offload the out of favour player.

Gomes started just 17 games in the La Liga last season under Luis Enrique but was only played the full 90 minutes in five of those games as Real Madrid became La Liga Champions. Gomes scored three times in the league in his first season at the club.

United and Jose Mourinho are on alert as the Portuguese manager is reportedly a huge admirer of his fellow countryman. United have contacted Barcelona to register their interest and are hoping to get the transfer wrapped up quickly and smoothly.

Both Mourinho and Gomes share the same agent – Jorge Mendes. This could help the deal for United as Barcelona look to make the money back that they spent on the 23-year-old.
