Manchester United will spend £27million on a defender... if he is allowed into the country.
Boss Jose Mourinho has agreed a deal for Paris Saint-Germain right-back Serge Aurier. Trouble is, the Ivory Coast international is currently banned from entering the UK.
The former Lens and Toulouse defender was found guilty of assaulting a police officer outside a Paris nightclub in September last year.
He was denied entry to the UK last October, missing a Champions League game at Arsenal, when border control authorities revoked a visa that had initially been granted.
The 24-year-old has lodged an appeal against his conviction in the French courts, which is due to be heard next week.
United will make representations to the government to clarify his position before completing the £90,000-a-week deal.
It is understood Mino Raiola, the super-agent who took Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku to Old Trafford in the past two summer windows, has been acting as a go-between for United with the defender’s French agent, Stephane Courbis, and that an outline agreement has been reached over a salary.
PSG have told Aurier he can go now they have signed Brazilian star Dani Alves as their new first-choice right-back.
They are desperate to raise funds to put towards what would be a world-record shattering move for Barcelona forward Neymar.
They have indicated Aurier is free to speak to any club prepared to meet their asking price of around £27m.
United are happy with that figure, as Mourinho looks to bring in more competition to the right side of his team.
Aurier was banned by PSG last year over comments about their then-manager Laurent Blanc and several teammates.
The season before, he missed three Champions League matches under a UEFA suspension for calling referee Bjorn Kuipers a “dirty son of a b***h” after sending off teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic in a Champions League last-16 match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. - Mirror
