Police arrests ‘one-chance’ bus driver for allegedly raping female passenger


Police in Anambra State has arrested one Chinedu Uyanna, male aged 28, a bus driver who works with a robbery syndicate in Onitsha city and environs.
Uyanna, a native of Nkpor Uno in Idemili South LGA of Anambra State was arrested on Sunday night, after he and other members of his gang who are still on the run diverted their passenger-bus into a bush and raped a female passenger(name withheld), before robbing their passengers of their belongings.
The spokesman for Anambra State police command, SP Haruna Mohammed who disclosed this in a press release said the gang was notorious for robbing and raping their passengers, within Onitsha and environment.
Haruna said, “At about 10pm, Police Patrol team attached to Oyi Division arrested one Chinedu Uyanna. Suspect along with his fleeing accomplices belonged to a syndicate who specialised in robbing passengers using a Mitsubishi L300 bus with REG number XC 489 GWA .
“The gang members who posed in their vehicle as commuter bus drivers conveyed passengers from Nkpor to Ogbommanu in Onitsha, but suddenly diverted to Umunya/Tansian University road and allegedly raped the female passenger, stole her bag, ATM card and other items before the police swooped on them, leading to the arrest of the bus driver while other gang members escaped.
“Meanwhile, the victim was taken to Chira Hospital Awkuzu for medical examination and the Mitsubishi bus used in perpetrating the dastardly act was recovered. Efforts are ongoing to apprehended other fleeing members in order to bring them to Justice.”
Haruna assured members of the public of the readiness of the command to stem crime in the state, and to arrest and prosecute offenders where they insist on committing them, but warned passengers to beware of the vehicles they board.

“The Command reassures the Public of it’s readiness at ensuring that all citizens are protected especially during this ember months period and implore them to be weary of the vehicles they board particularly unregistered ones in order not to fall victims of one chance robbery.” - Daily Post
