Women advised on regular breast cancer checkup

Dr Femi Adewole, a gynecologist with Holy Bethany Hospital, Osogbo has advised women to always go for regular checkup of their breasts for early detection and treatment of cancer.
Adewole, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Osogbo said that early detection of breast cancer would provide effective treatment for women.
He described breast cancer as a malignant tumor that develops from cells in the breast, explaining that the disease could either start in the cell of the lobes which are the milk-producing glands.
He said “Breast cancer can begin in the stromal tissues which include the fatty and fibrous connective tissues of the breast.
“Over time, cancer cells can invade nearby healthy breast tissue and make their way into the underarm lymph nodes or small organs that filter out foreign substances in the body.
“If cancer cells get into the lymph nodes, they then have a pathway into other parts of the body.’’
The medical expert explained that breast cancer was usually caused by a genetic abnormality in women.
He noted that only 5 to 10 per cent of breast cancers were due to genetic abnormalities inherited from parents.
He added also that 85 to 90 per cent were due to genetic abnormalities that occurred as a result of the aging processes and the ‘ wear and tear ‘ in the body.
Asides the regular check-up, Adewole urged them to always make their bodies to stay healthy by eating balanced diet, healthy weight gain, abstain from smoking and alcohol.
According to him, the above mentioned measures might not totally eliminate the risk of breast cancer but could minimise it.
“Early defection is key and the goal of early detection is to identify breast abnormalities as early as possible and give it the best treatment.
“Developing breast cancer is not anyone’s fault and feeling guilty is not an option but rather early detection and treatment,’’ Adewole said. - PM News
