Lottery millionaire's son spent £1.6m – then sued his father for more cash

A man who was given nearly £1.6m by his father after he won £101m in the Euromillions has had his claim for more cash thrown out by a judge.
Michael Dawes, 32, took his father, Dave, and stepmother Angie to court after they stopped giving him more money. He claimed the couple had promised to ensure he and his partner, James Beedle, 34, would never have to worry about money again.

The central London county court heard that they had been given more than £1.5m in the two years following the lottery win in 2011, but two years later most of the cash had been spent.
Judge Nigel Gerald dismissed the claim, saying Dave Dawes did not need to keep “bailing out his profligate son”. He said: “There was no basis on which any rational or normal human being could conclude that they could go back for more money whenever they wanted.”

Michael Dawes was given £1m by his father and stepmother soon after their win, but the judge said nearly all of it had been spent within a month.
About £550,000 was spent on a house in Portsmouth, where Michael lived, but he also gave nearly £250,000 to friends and his partner’s family, and quit a well-paid IT job.

At one point, the pair were spending up to £30,000 a month, including £1,000 a week on groceries. The judge compared their lifestyle to “some sort of Walter Mitty existence”.
Dave Dawes was unaware his son had given away so much of the money and was baffled when he claimed to have run out of most of it by April 2012. But he wanted to help him, the judge said, and kept transferring money to his bank account.
Gerald added: “Michael took this as a demonstration that his father would cough up whenever asked, and this therefore buttressed his strange conclusion that his dad would financially support him for the rest of his life.” He concluded: “I cannot accept this.”

By March 2013, Dave and Angie Dawes called a family meeting and agreed to pay off some of the Michael and his partner’s debts but that no more funds would be forthcoming. Gerald said: “Angie made clear that there would be nothing more.”
Michael Dawes has not spoken to his father and stepmother since a falling out at her birthday party when he demanded £5m more and verbally abused Angie Dawes. He has also accused them of being arrogant and ungenerous of spirit.

Michael Dawes told the court: “I saw how over time their attitude changed from being relatively humble to being rather grand. They expected the people around them to treat them differently because of their money.”
The couple’s QC, Richard Wilson, said they had shared their good fortune with their family, giving away some £30m to relatives and close friends, as well as setting up a charity.

The judge concluded: “Michael was provided with the funds to have a comfortable life, but for his own reasons he chose not to take that opportunity. I therefore dismiss the claim.”

Big Brother Naija runner-up, Bisola Aiyeola has made her first big move after her success at the just concluded reality show by signing a deal with creative agency powerhouse, Temple Management Company (TMC).

The multi-talented talented actress, who emerged as fan favourite at the just concluded reality TV show, now aligns herself with industry professionals to help actualize her talent.

She committed to an agreement with TMC on Thursday, May 18 in company of her representatives and senior TMC officials at the Victoria Island corporate office of the organization.

TMC, which began operations over a year ago, is working to transform the career of some of Nigeria’s biggest talents across four major platforms namely; entertainment, sports, arts and media. Some of the talents currently represented by the agency include Mavin Records, Iyanya, 9ice, Seye Ogunlewe, Ebi Onome, Marylove Edwards, Victor Ehikhamenor and Funmi Iyanda.

Speaking after the signing, Bisola said excitedly: “I am elated and happy that a close-knit organization like Temple Management Company is bringing me into their fold. Giving an insight into her plans, she revealed that she would be working on a couple of projects with TMC. She explained: "After BBN, I want to focus on some of my personal projects. Israeli Culture Minister's Jerusalem Dress Stirs Up Controversy

Israel culture minister, Miri Regev, attending the opening ceremony for Ismael's Ghosts, made a loud political statement with a white dress emblazoned with the skyline of Jerusalem's Old City, including the Western Wall and Dome of the Rock.

The dress was commissioned by Regev from designer Aviad Arik Herman to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Six-Day War in 1967 in which Israeli forces took control of East Jerusalem. 
Both Israelis and Palestinians view Jerusalem as their capital. 

"I am proud to celebrate this historic date through art and fashion, and I am happy that this work by Israeli designer Aviad Herman is so moving and honours the beautiful status of our eternal capital, Jerusalem," said Regev, according to The Times of Israel.
The social media response was swift and colourful, with several Twitter users offering photoshopped versions of the dress. 
"Miri Regev's dress is cool and all, but it's lacking one little thing: the 370,000 Palestinians living in 'united' East Jerusalem, 41 percent of its population," tweeted Shira Makin.

Chinese jets intercept U.S. radiation-sniffing plane, U.S. says

Two Chinese “SU-30” jets carried out what the U.S. military described as an “unprofessional” intercept of a U.S. aircraft designed to detect radiation while it was flying in international airspace over the East China Sea.

U.S. Air Force spokesperson, Lt.-Col. Lori Hodge said: “the issue is being addressed with China through appropriate diplomatic and military channels.”

Hodge said the U.S. characterisation of the incident was based on initial reports from the aircrew aboard the “WC-135`’ Constant Phoenix aircraft “due to the maneuvers by the Chinese pilot, as well as the speeds and proximity of both aircraft.”

“Distances always have a bearing on how we characterise interactions,” Hodge said, adding a U.S. military investigation into the intercept was underway.

She said the “WC-135” was carrying out a routine mission at the time and was operating in accordance with international law.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying declined to comment on the specific incident and referred questions to the defence ministry which has yet to comment.

“For a long time U.S. ships and aircraft have been carrying out close up surveillance of China which can really easily cause misunderstandings or misjudgments or cause unexpected incidents at sea or in the air,” she said.

“We hope that the U.S. side can respect China’s reasonable security concerns.”

On Feb. 8, a U.S. Navy “P-3” spy plane and a Chinese military aircraft came close to each other over the South China Sea in an incident the Navy saw as unsafe but also inadvertent.

Reuters reported at the time that the aircraft came within 1,000 feet of each other in the vicinity of the Scarborough Shoal, between the Philippines and the Chinese mainland.

China is deeply suspicious of any U.S. military activity in the resource-rich South China Sea, parts of which are disputed by China and its smaller neighbors including the Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia. - Agency Report

Madonna tops list of America's wealthiest female musicians in 2017

American singer, Madonna tops the list of America's richest female musicians in 2017 that's just been released by Forbes.

Madonna reigns with a whooping $580 million. Forbes reports that her Rebel Heart tour, which ended in March 2016, grossed $170million.

She's closely followed by Celine Dion who comes in second position with $400 million while Barbra Streisand clinches the third position with $390 million.

Beyonce comes in 4th position with $350 million as her last year’s Lemonade album and the Formation World Tour reportedly grossed a quarter of a billion dollars. 

Taylor Swift completes the list of the top 5 with $280 million largely due to the success of her 1989 tour, which smashed North American touring records.
