Tension as Kaduna-bound flight develops fault before take-off
Passengers on an Arik Air flight from Lagos to Kaduna panicked on  Saturday afternoon as the aircraft developed technical problems when it was about taking off.
The Boeing 707 flight was meant to convey passengers to Kaduna and Jos when the incident happened at 3:15pm.
The passengers accused the airline of inefficiency and not checking the plane before allowing passengers board it.
They, however, thanked God that the technical problem occurred before take-off.
The plane had cruised on the runway of the Murtala Muhammed airport, Lagos, for at least 20 minutes before the pilot announced the glitch.
“I am sorry the plane has technical problems that need to be rectified,” he announced as he turned back to the tarmac.
The passengers were asked to disembark and return to the departure hall and wait for further directives.
About an hour later, another plane was assigned to Kaduna passengers, while those of Jos stayed behind.

HABA BABA IYABO !!! 2019: I have no preferred presidential candidate – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has declared that he has no preferred candidate in the forthcoming general elections.

Obasanjo said he would not tell Nigerians to vote or not to vote for any particular candidate, but should vote wisely.

Obasanjo, who some people believed had decided to support Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said he needed Nigerians to vote for a credible candidate.
He made the remarks at the 27th annual Owu National Convention, held in Iwo, Osun on Saturday.
The former President, however, urged Nigerians to vote for credible candidates, who can liberate the country.
In his remark, Chairman, Supreme Council of Owu Obas, Oba Hammed Oyelude, said Owu, being the largest Yoruba speaking ethnic group in the South West, has been contributing to the development of Nigeria.
Hammed, who is the Olowu of Owu Kuta, said Royal Union of Owu People (ROUP) is not a political party, but must contribute to the policy direction of the country.
He called on Owu people to participate in politics, in order to have a say in the running of the affairs of the country and be able to contribute their quota.
Oyelude also called on sons and daughters of Owu to support and vote for any Owu indigene contesting for any political office.

Oil marketers to get N236bn subsidy claims on Dec.14

The Federal government said on Saturday that oil marketers would be paid N236 billion out of N348 billion approved by the National Assembly as outstanding subsidy claims on Friday Dec. 14th.
The Chief Operating officer, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Downstream Mr Henry Ikem-Obih disclosed this to newsmen, in Abuja.
“The Debt Management Office (DMO) will by next week precisely on Dec. 14th pay oil marketers first part of the subsidy arrears of N236 billion as agreed by both parties.
“We agreed that after the first tranche is paid, the marketers will form committee to work on details of how the next tranche will be paid in 2019 and the last paid in 2020.
“Government is fully committed to pay the first tranche as promised and will be paid through promissory note that will issued by the DMO,’’ he said.
Ikem-Obih said that oil marketers equally owed government some debt which would not be deducted from the first tranche of payment.
He said that it was unfortunate that Depot and Petroleum Product Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) had issues a counter statement from what was agreed at the meeting held with all stakeholders on Thursday.
It will be recalled that stakeholders in the oil sector held a meeting at the ministry of Finance on Thursday, Dec. 6th and reached an agreement on how to pay outstanding subsidy claims to marketers.
DAPPMAN on Friday issued a counter statement saying that there was no agreement reached with government because it failed to reach legitimate demands of the association which was that the claims should be paid in cash instead of through the promissory notes.
He said that Independent Petroleum Marketers Association (IPMAN), DAPPMAN, Major Oil Marketers of Nigeria (MOMAN) CBN, PPPRA, among others were part of the meeting.
“Government is committed to doing what we agreed on and that is why they get the first tranche by next week.
“We have told marketers that what government is doing now is honest and highly transparent,’’ he added.
Ikem-Obih urged Nigerians not to panic as the NNPC and all other stakeholders will ensure that there was no scarcity of the product throughout the yuletide season.
“Currently, we have 55 days of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) storage in the Country which translates to 2.8 million litres in volume and 90,000 metric tonnes of Diesel.
“The 90,000 metric tonnes is supplied by NNPC and it’s subsidiary PPMC and we will continue to import,’’ he added
He said that apart from imported products, that the Warri refinery had on Thursday started refining products and the Port Harcourt refinery would soon kick off refining.
This, he said would continue to boost the quantity of product in the country.
In an interview, some marketers who spoke commended government and assured that they would support efforts that would ensure smooth supply and distribution of petroleum products in the country.
Alhaji Aliyu Sa’id Managing Director AA Rano filling station said that national interest must be upheld and it would be wise for DAPMAN to give government a chance.
“We have enough products and we will not shut down for any reason, we do not want Nigerians to suffer during this period and that is why we are supporting government effort,’’ he said.
Also, Managing Director of AYM Shafa filling station, said that they would work to ensure that there was not scarcity in the country during the yuletide season.
“We will support government efforts to ensure smooth supply and distribution of products especially during the Christmas season,’’ he added.
Other marketers who promised ensure free flow of the product in the country include Obat oil PLC, ED Tonimas Nigeria Limited, among others.

PL News: Pogba can be fantastic - Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has backed Paul Pogba to show "everybody how good he is" when Manchester United face Valencia in the Champions League.
Pogba was an unused substitute in the 4-1 win over Fulham on Saturday, the second successive match he has started on the bench for United.
The midfielder will return to the starting line-up for Wednesday's trip to the Mestalla and Mourinho has backed the France international to impress, as United look to overtake Juventus into top spot in Group H.
"He has to play with the same mentality as the team is playing," said Mourinho, when asked what Pogba needed to do to get back in the team on a permanent basis."
Paul can be a fantastic player, he has the potential to be a fantastic player.
"Against Valencia, he is going to start and have a fantastic football game to play and to show everybody how good he is."
Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic started in central midfield for the win over Fulham and Mourinho believes the pair have improved their performances in recent weeks.
"You have teams that are positionally good, ready to press, and with a desire to press, and I think these two boys - Matic and Herrera - have a really strong mentality," Mourinho said.
"The way they play football is to play at the top of their level and then the people in front of them were also good."

Johannesburg, Durban other cities run out of cemetery space

In the middle of the vast Avalon cemetery in Johannesburg’s Soweto township, two gravediggers shovelled soil out of an old grave containing remains buried years ago.
They were preparing the grave to be reused as towns across South Africa are fast running out of space to bury the dead.
Population growth, migration to urban areas and an influx of foreigners have put huge pressure on land in urban areas. Adding to the problem is a cultural resistance to the practice of cremation.
Between 45 and 60 graves are re-opened each week on average to allow for second burials in Johannesburg, the country’s largest city and economic hub.
Authorities warn that if no action is taken to change how the dead are laid to rest, urban areas will run out of room in as little as 50 years.
“Burial space is fast diminishing. This is caused by the fact that Joburg is currently experiencing high migration,” said Reggie Moloi, the city’s cemeteries and crematoria manager.
Johannesburg is not the only city in South Africa battling the shortage.
The southeastern coastal city of Durban raised the alarm more than a decade ago.
The city had an unusually high death rate in the 1980s, having been particularly hard hit by political violence and HIV/AIDS, say officials.
“We noticed that cemeteries then filled up in a shortest period of time and that quite soon … (we were) going to run out of burial space,” Thembinkosi Ngcobo, the head of parks in eThekwini, which includes Durban, told AFP.
People seeking burial space could soon be turned away, he warned. “We are facing a very serious problem.”
“The situation is dire and not readily understood… because to the eye it seems there is sufficient (space),” said Denis Ing, deputy chairman of the South African Cemeteries Association.
The public did not grasp the scale of the problem, he said.
The crisis has pushed officials to think creatively about how best to dispose of the dead.
While recycling graves has helped ease the situation, cremation still faces significant resistance from African communities, which see it as unnatural and against tradition.
At Roodepoort near Soweto, the Sipamla family buried 87-year-old mother and grandmother Caroline Sipamla in the same grave as her son.
“Graveyards are very full,” said Puleng Sipamla as undertakers covered the remains of her mother. “We thought it would be easier for us to re-open and it’s cheaper than digging a new grave.
Sipamla had made her feelings known on the matter, said her granddaughter Zoleka Sipamla, 23. “She was pretty clear — no cremation.”
Reverend Harold Ginya of the Church of the Nazarene encourages his worshippers to reuse graves — but discourages cremation.
“We are promoting this kind of thing. No one will complain that you are on top of me,” he said.
While many older people are opposed to cremation, the younger generation may prove more open.

“It would be helpful if people understood why people need to be cremated — because there is a problem of land,” said Zoleka Sipamla, a law student.
But the limited appeal of the crematorium has a lot to do with what some people associate with it: the fires of hell.
“They say,’Why would I send my loved one to hell?’” said Moloi.
Others opposed to cremation believe a bodily form is required to reach the afterlife — not ashes.
“Cremation is culturally prohibitive for people… bodies matter, human bodies have power and they have value,” said University of New Hampshire anthropologist, Casey Golomski.
Few black Africans are cremated in Durban, with just one a week on average compared to dozens of burials.
During a recent campaign to raise awareness of the crisis, it became clear that some traditionalists in the port city were even sceptical of shared graves, said Ngcobo.
One elderly man told officials he had never shared a bed with his daughter-in-law. “How do you expect me to share a gravesite with her?” he asked. “That is totally unacceptable”.
The increasing land demands of the living could mean that cremation and grave recycling become mandatory, officials warn.
“There is going to come a time when the people of Johannesburg will not have a choice but to go to the crematoria or reuse a grave,” warned Moloi.
“We cannot be having land reserved for cemeteries.”
The situation could be eased by a controversial constitutional amendment proposed by the government, which would allow the forcible transfer of land to redress the inequalities of apartheid and colonialism.
“We believe that expropriation of land without compensation will assist us in addressing these challenges,” the mayor of eThekwini Zandile Gumede said earlier this year.
Until then, desperate times are calling for desperate measures, including the possible boxing and storage of remains older than 30 years in the corner of existing graves.
