Rooney has gone into more depth regarding his Everton departure this summer for MLS outfit DC United.
Having only rejoined Everton last summer after 13 years away at Manchester United, the 32-year old departed Goodison Park once again this summer to link up with Washington D.C. based DC United.
Initially, the former England captain claimed that his reasons for leaving the club would be revealed in time, and now he has broken down the situation over his departure.
Speaking to ESPN, Rooney had this to say on leaving Merseyside:
“Everton made it clear towards the end of the season that they would be happy for me to leave, for what ever reason I still don’t know.”
“I felt I had done okay, was top goalscorer, played most of the season from midfield, but that’s football.”
“That gave me a decision to make, and I made this decision.”
“I said to Everton, ‘I’m not a kid. If this is what you want, tell me. If you want me to stay, tell me’ and we talked about it.”
“As an 18, 20 or 21 year old, I wouldn’t have been able to handle it as well as I have. They let me know and I said fair enough, I’m not going to disrespect the football club.” - Read Sport
