LONDON — A 25-year-old man has been shot dead outside a pub in south London while reportedly dropping his girlfriend off, in a shocking incident that has sparked a murder investigation.
Police and emergency services were called to Landor Road, Clapham, shortly before 10pm on Monday, August 10, following reports of gunfire near the Landor pub.
Officers found the 25-year-old victim suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the rapid response from paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses reported hearing several loud bangs, with one resident describing the sounds as being similar to fireworks. The shooting reportedly caused panic among people in the area, with witnesses describing scenes of screaming and crying as emergency services arrived.
According to reports, the victim had been dropping his girlfriend off at the pub when he was attacked. Some witnesses have suggested that the shooting may have involved mistaken identity, although police have not confirmed a motive and the circumstances remain under investigation.
A 22-year-old man later attended hospital with a gunshot wound and was arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in hospital while enquiries continue.
Police have cordoned off parts of Landor Road and surrounding streets as forensic officers examine the scene and gather evidence. Investigators are also examining a vehicle believed to have been connected to the victim.
The London Ambulance Service said its crews arrived within around three minutes of receiving the emergency call. A trauma team from London's Air Ambulance was also sent to the scene, but the victim could not be saved.
Detectives are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information, including residents who may have CCTV, doorbell-camera footage or mobile-phone recordings from the area at the time of the shooting, to come forward.
The death has left friends, relatives and members of the local community devastated, while police have increased their presence in the area as the investigation continues.
Police have urged anyone with information to assist detectives as they work to establish exactly what happened and why the young man was targeted.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the arrested man has not been convicted of any offence.
